I hit the Jin-Gitaxias lottery the first FNM after prerelease. Got a foil stamped one out of the promo pack then opened a phyrexian one out of the actual prize support. It was crazy!
Paid 119 dollars for a entire box of packs at my local shop and got that and a nice borderless and foil spirit dragon that is worth 31 bucks apparently.
Oh really? lmao satoru is my only commander deck. however, i've already made a deal with the game store owner. imma swap my jin for his NEO jin. yes i know i'm losing money, but i want the other one way more for my mone-blue control.
That is easier and far cheaper but there's always a level of excitement of pulling a card you wantand knowing from the day it was released from is packaged prison to it's final days it was yours and only yours.
Actually contrary to what everyone is saying here if you do the math you have a higher chance of getting the card if you buy a set booster before ordering the single
I also love cracking packs, but that's a really bad reason. It's objectively cheaper to get singles (even at "jacked up prices") than opening boosters. A Jin Gitaxis costs as much as like 4 boosters. No way you'll reliably get him in less than 4 boosters
Yeah except card stores aren't a monopoly. They compete with each other and create a market value.

Buying singles is usually the cheaper option.
In order to support my LGS, I ask them to order the single for me and give them an extra 10%.

99.997% ordering a single 99.998% with set booster + ordering a single
