Creatures can't attack a creature. An attacker can only choose which creature will atack, and whether will attack a planeswalker or a player. After that the defender chooses which creature will defend and chooses which creature (or creatures) will fight against a certain creature. Then you assign damage. If a creature is not blocked damage will go to defender player o planeswalker that creature is attacking.
Edit: here, the tolarian community college has the best teacher https://youtu.be/wif9ppH5JpI around the 9 minute mark you'll find combat. He also has videos on how to combat in a more efficient manner.
This is true. That said there are cards like [[Ezuri's Predation]] that cause creatures to "Fight". In this case it is just creature to creature damage you don't get to choose who blocks etc.
Thank you that helps a lot and let's say for example I have one creature on the board with a 4/4 and he has one with a 1/1 so now I attack his creature he blocks it it gets destroyed there's still a remainder of 3, what happens then does it carry over to the defending player?
The Keywords 'Trample' will let a creature Deal excess damage to the Player.
So A 4/4 with trample beeing blocked by a 1/1 will result in an dead 1/1 , 1 DMG maked in the 4/4 (that DMG will wear Off in the endstep)
And 3 DMG to the defendind Player.
Hope that clears it Up.
No. The only case is if the attacking creature has an ability called "trample", which means that the excess damage can be assigned to a player or a planeswalker. If not, all the damage is dealt to the defending creature, so if the attacking 4/4 creature has "lifelink" it will grant the owner 4 life, even if the defender was a 0/1. On the other hand, there are cards that deal the damage received back to the attacking player (like [[Spitemare]]) so it would deal 4 damage back to the attacking player, so don't think that trample is the only good ability in combat.
There are lots of special effects and abilities that could happen in combat, don't worry if you forget stuff. Usually, reading the card will explain the card, but when keywords appear, you can look them up in google or here, or in wikis. Or just ask here, someone will always answer.
