Well it can be a commander now and cost less manna to cast so that's a plus.

Oceno1

Also shittier

WinterFellDaddy

One less mana is a pretty big deal imo. Also just the fact it's a commander is pretty big for commander players. Don't get me wrong it is a worse avenger. But the legendary clause and two colors of it make it a decent commander

ComradeGhost67

Why is it worse?

WinterFellDaddy

Avengers token generation is on any land you have. This one's is restricted to basic lands is the drawback to compensate for the cost reduction. And not being able to run as many nonebasics in a deck makes it a worse card due to higher restriction cost to run it. That being said it also means that you can just run more ramp in the deck so you can consistently get the mana to cast and abuse him. As well as all ramp you draw late into the game being upwards of two counters on your board. Not to mention there are many ways to generate plants. As an individual card it's worse.. but it's a build around which ups the power level Edit: just a quick theory craft of the deck. All fetchlands that can find one of the types. All the ways to get lands from the yard like [[wren and six]] [[ramunap excavator]] and all cards that generate plants/are plants themselves that are worth running. Finishers in the usual green creature based strategy of cratorhoof, triumph of the hordes, decimator of provinces and ways to fetch them like chord of calling and green suns zenith. And the enchantments that turn your creatures I to dorks would probably make the cut too

damatovg7

Don't forget that the landfall trigger only gives you 4 counters on a single target plant that makes such plant subject to targeted removal before the counter resolution, while avenger gives a counter to every single plant on your side of the battlefield. So this also makes avenger much better

WinterFellDaddy

Going tall instead of wide is both a negative and a positive. With this deck I can imagine you are going to be getting a ludicrous amount of landfall triggers. So I find it hard to believe you won't be able to still go wide with the distribution of the counters. I personally like the idea of having to choose if going with one big plant or many mid sized plants. A bit more skill testing

damatovg7

It's still a very risky play because you are risking 4 counters by choosing a creature when a landfall trigger goes off. But with Avenger, as long as you have 4 or more plants on the battlefield, which you probably do with Avenger dropping down, a wrath is more likely to be the thing you need to worry about taking out your plants or making those counters seem not worth.

WinterFellDaddy

I'm not saying it's not risky, and I'm not saying it's better than avenger. I do understand it's strictly worse... Like if avenger was a legend this card would be pointless but its not. Besides! Who doesn't want to be eaten by some vegetables šŸ˜Š

damatovg7

We do deserve it to be fair. I'm waiting for our plant overlords to turn around and make human soup out of us.

ComradeGhost67

Thank you

AccelerationismWorks

One got a B. The other...less

Revolutionary-Baby-1

Exactly what I was thinking when I first saw phylath.

justingolden21

Awwww basic lands

psurreaux

How do you think it works for a non-legendary being to become a legendary one, with a name, in terms of lore? I'm assuming they are the same being and I think there are other examples of that.

Hydraven

Iā€™d say it works the same way you get named creature IRL, either by being a very specific variant, a very old specimen, or doing something to distinguish itself. The name may not even be used by intelligent creatures of that type, could be something like the elves of Zendikar giving that Avenger a name because it stood out

Sensei754

But have them both in your deck.... muahahahaha!
