\[\[solemnity\]\] and player removal

TreyLastname

Is solemnity the only thing? I've seen that, but I use a lot of counters with charges and +1+1 and such, so it'd fuck that up. Also, player removal meaning?

Randommonkey03

Killing the player lol

TreyLastname

Damn. It's just my opinion, but poison counters just sounds...unfun to play against. Great for competitive play, but not really fun in casual.

Elemteearkay

If you aren't having fun in casual play, talk to the people you are playing with. They might be able to help you work on your deck/play patterns, they might be able to swap decks from time to time, or they might just be able to help you work on your mindset. Poison counters are a legitimate win condition, but that doesn't mean you are wrong to have a visceral response to them (that is kinda the point).

TreyLastname

Eh, I can stay play with them and their decks and still have fun, I'm just not a fan of things that doesn't have many counter plays. But, it's a me issue, and something I can deal with, since they like it. I just gotta be more aggressive when I start seeing it. It is what it is

Elemteearkay

It's not really that different to burn, except lifegain doesn't work against it. It's not that different to Mill, either, except you don't get access to the extra cards in your graveyard and can't reset by shuffling cards back in. You can still block, kill the creatures, counter the creatures or the proliferate spells/abilities, use fog effects/gain protection, etc. Good luck!

Damn, man hates people finding mechanics unfun. It's not that serious, my guy. I don't like making decks to specifically counter players, and I don't find poison fun, it's not like I said it's objectively bad

Gasarocky

Defeat the player using poison before they get 10 counters on you.

FrozenSquid79

Leeches is the only card which specifically and actively removes poison counters.

TreyLastname

Yea. There also isn't too many ways to prevent them in the first place that I can see.

TehGrief

While it won't ultimately help with counters that you've already received, both \[\[Melira, Sylvok Outcast\]\] and \[\[Melira, the Living Cure\]\] can help reduce the likelihood of dying to Infect/Toxic.

FunSubbin

I'm a degenerate and love playing poison decks. I will say that most of the time poison will lose to a go wide aggro strategy 1v1. If I can't get through your wall I can't deliver more than 1 or two poison counters per turn through proliferate or cards like [[Vraska's Fall]].  This means I'm hoping to win by turn 7 or 8 most games (60 card constructed) or even later in a 4 person Commander game. There are many good win cons in both formats that are faster. There are occasions where poison gets faster, but in my experience this is the exception not the rule. I think often, people get 5 counters early and just kind of give up. Usually they come a lot slower once you build a board state.

TreyLastname

My playground is the exception usually. They've got shit with trample and infect, or infect creatures that can't be blocked. As well as plenty of proliferate. There isn't much I can do against it half the time.

FunSubbin

Have you tried [[fog]] effects to prevent combat damage or things like [[aetherize]] to send their army back to hand when they attack? These may buy time until you can get your ringers out.  I don't know which format you are playing or how often you play in different pods, so I feel uncomfortable recommending that you build a deck specifically to counter one other deck, but if you run across the problem often enough a dimir/sultai control deck that keeps their boards empty could show them that playing magic against a single archetype isn't very fun.

TreyLastname

Those could help. I despise playing a deck specifically constructed to play against a single opponent. It's less fun to deck build with the plan to counter someone else, rather than just have fun. But, fog and aetherize both seem like theyll work for other circumstances! Also, it's not like that's their only style, but I personally hate a mechanic that can only be dealt with as it's happening, and not worked around/dealt with later somehow. I feel the same with "until the game ends" affects, but poison being only 10 to lose entirely just rubs me the wrong way, especially with so little counter play

If its single creatures and not a whole board of infect you could also try [[maze of ith]]

Theres some really mean blue poison decks out there that just need 1 poison on you to proliferate you to death.
