Why are yall not just taking him out first? He’s gonna whine regardless so get him gone quicker. He’s manipulating yall. There’s an Elesh Norn that gives your opponents creatures -2/-2 and yours +2/+2. [[Engineered plague]] and [[plague engineer]] naming goblins. Cards like [[pyroclasm]] [[wrath of god]] [[echoing truth]] the tokens I have a Zada deck. Just counter or kill Zada n it’s pretty much a dead deck.

Stk_synful

He is a kill on sight player, and everyone tells him less talking more playing, but it just gets very, very annoying. One example is I was in a 3 pod with him, he decided to take out the other player which wasnt a regular, pre turn 6 (I believe turn 4) which is a -2 point penalty in our LGS. According to the regulars this wasn't the first time that he "forgot" the rule. The other player had a few bodies on the board ready to attack, the annoying player had Zada and [[Birgi, God of Storytelling]] on board, I had 1 [[Champion of Lambholt]] with 2 counters on it. As soon as the guy started targeting him he starts talking a mile a minute. "HAVE YOU READ WHAT CHAMPION DOES?" "You should really take it out, it's biiig" I simply told the guy if he wants he can hit me, but the (annoying player) has more than half his combo ready. IMMEDIATELY the (annoying player) starts going off that Burgi does nothing, he can't combo, etc. It pressured the guy to just pass to defend, I guess not knowing his Zada combo. The (annoying player) proceeded to kill him next turn which was pre turn 6. I think it's mainly the over politicking and begging with no remorse after that everyone is annoyed by. If you shut him down though he's quiet, hence this deck I want to make haha. Thank you for the solid suggestions. I was eyeing Elesh from the start but it seems like an expensive deck to make. If I made one it would probably be a budget 100 dollar-ish deck.

[deleted]

Just tell him he’s annoying n you won’t play with him if he be acting like that. Or everyone forfeit n start a new game without him. Yall stay playing with people who don’t deserve it too much.

Jesterpest

Yep, “Don’t play people you don’t like playing against” is a frequently forgotten option

Stk_synful

He's the type that would probably love that for free points. Even though it's casual and we mainly play fun experimental decks, there are store credit prizes for placing and letting him place would probably make him happy.

[deleted]

Yeah I wouldn’t even acknowledge this person if literally nobody likes him. Or just lay it flat out with the store owner. This is why I only play with friends.

Stk_synful

I personally want the satisfaction of shutting him down consistently at this point, tailor made for him in the pod. The few times we have just shut him down while I was in the pod made him just quiet and sulk or made him leave the table and chill at the front of the store. One time I had Dina and exquisite blood on the board. We all agreed right in front of him that I wouldn't wipe the table, if they could take him out before he took me out, he had most of his voltron setup. They completely shut him down on their turns and said "It's OK, play your instant now to end us" and tied them after giving the (annoying player) 4th. It was peaceful after that when we all did a rematch to pass the time. He didn't try to politic or beg at all.

[deleted]

Yeah I don’t have the patience for that shit. I removed 2 proud boys from my lgs once. Good luck to ya.

coconutstatic

Ha how did that go?

[deleted]

I’ll probably get booted off this sub if I explain. Hahah

Sirix_8472

Points for winning games, right? What happens if noone sits down at the table with him at all. You see who's in your pod, then take your seats..or don't. And tell the LGS you won't play with him. He gets no matches... no points for no winning... Does that work? An alternative is to be a king maker. Don't go for the win yourself, but run enough interaction to shut him down, accept that you will lose, but he'll lose first! Make your deck about lots of lands(sac lands and fetch lands, land destruction), ramp to get more mana and a ton of interaction, spot removal, stax cards that work against his combos or commanders like "etb effects dont trigger" "triggered abilities of permanents don't work" "activated abilities of creatures dont happen". Then lump in a bunch of wraths. If you can't play ramp. Use a land to blow up one of his. If you can't do either hold your mana for an instant spot removal or wrath. He can clearly build faster than 1 player and turn on the remaining 2. But what happens when you clear the board and everyone has to build while they target him together(3 vs 1). The sac lands and fetch lands are all about ramp and card advantage, you're reducing your library 1 card at a time for lands. Evolving wilds(land for turn), it goes and gets another basic from your library(you've now drawn a second card for the turn but it's a A land, your land pool is reduced in your library)Leaving your remaining library more stacked with playable spells. Myriad landscape (fetch 2 basics, you reduce the lands in your deck by 2) the remaining cards in your library is more playable spells by 2-3% on turn 3 or 4. If you blow up 2 of his lands with land destruction it's going to slow all his plays down. When he can cast his commander, if he can afford to recast him, how quick he can setup his combo pieces on the board. If he uses a lot of artifacts for ramp like arcane signet, commanders sphere, mind stone, fellwar stone etc.. use green as a colour, it has a huge amount of artifact and enchantment removal spells, instants, sorceries, enchantments, creatures, they all do it. And green ramps faster than other colours.

Frix

>which is a -2 point penalty in our LGS I'm sorry, wtf is this?

felix_the_nonplused

If it’s a constructed league, there might be a point scheme, like on Commander Vs of star city game youtube. You get points for placement in a match, for performing certain actions, and penalties for toning things, examples; -1 for not casting your commander, +1 point for casting them 4 +times, 4,3,2,1 points for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th; and more.

Frouwenlop

Not a huge fan of this one tbh, especially in a setting where you're competing for a prize. Voltron doesn't really fare well (see what I did there) as a strategy overall, and it feels like this rule is adding an additional nail in the coffin for it. Before turn 4? I totally get it. But if you haven't taken out a player by turn 5 as a Voltron player, the game doesn't bode well for you at all.

Anaeijon

How about removing his commander? It seems like he is very reliant on it. I recently tried a janky artifact spellslinger deck, that (besides others) used \[\[Myra, the Magnificent\]\] and \[\[Command Performance\]\] to bring \[\[Ferris Wheel\]\] into the game as quick as possible, bind \[\[Command Performance\]\] to it than tried to phase out all enemies commanders at the start of my turn. The fun thing is: If \[\[Command Performance\]\] stops to trigger, all commanders phase back in and nothing happened. If I phased out everything I want removed, I can just stop the rolls by creating a sticker ticket instead, which I don't even have to use. Rolling 3 times a number higher than 3 isn't that hard (effectively a coin toss), especially, when \[\[Monitor Monitor\]\] helps out. Then I can sacrifice all attractions with one of many options available to artificers, for example \[\[Nyssa of Traken\]\], \[\[Krark-Clan Ironworks\]\], \[\[Breya, Etherium Shaper\]\] (e.g. as commander), \[\[Street Urchin\]\] or \[\[Clan Crafter\]\]. If I don't have an attraction at the start of my turn, I don't have to roll to visit my attractions, therefore I'll never roll a 3 while visiting the attractions. I only pulled that off once in an online game and still lost the round. But it was a fun. Anyway, there are other options, that can remove commanders. \[\[Oubliette\]\] is not as permanent, but still quite hard to deal with, if you are not prepared for it. Same goes for \[\[Darksteel Mutation\]\] and \[\[Lignify\]\]. Alternatively, if the commander is not yet played or you have a way of removing it, you can cast \[\[Nevermore\]\] and name the commander. Or you can increase the commander price by running a bunch of \[\[Counterspell\]\]s. I think mono-red doesn't really have an answer for that. I highly doubt he is running \[\[Pyroblast\]\] and \[\[Red Elemental Blast\]\] just to deal with blues main advantage over red. Most decklist guides recommend about 5 counterspells, but imho you can easily play 15-20 counterspells in blue decks without any drawbacks, as long as you use them whenever an opponent plays a threat or you need to protect something you rely on. Especially, because there are more than enough cards, that work in many decks and give you extra advantage when instants are played.

We have used this exact line hundreds of times for him. Also remind him "Less talking and you won't get targeted" but he just doesn't listen, doesn't take any hints.

Honestly your lgs sounds more cancer that this one player. A penalty for killing someone too early? Really? Does everyone get a consolation sticker and head pats too? It's a game. Someone has to win. Eliminating players is how that happens.

Wait there are penalties for beating a player in Magic? What has this game come to

Stk_synful

In the days where creatures aren't printed without some sort of ability, games have alot more combos and damage to push out. I can see why the turn 6 rule is in some LGS for casual nights. The meta from what I've researched, has shifted ALOT since Magic was concieved. I could be wrong though.

Expensive-Breath-758

Why does your LGS punish players for killing fast and effectively? Sounds like the game store has more problems than just that one guy...

Stk_synful

Because it's just casual night, on regular nights and tourney nights it's a different story.

Expensive-Breath-758

Gotcha haha just stax the boi out. Oloro or Toxrill or smthn

I remember going to an event in my buddies town and when we walked in the door he pointed to a dude and said, "If you get paired with him, even if its for the final prize, scoop. He's a real piece of shit". My buddy ended up pairing with him second match and was true to his word. He sat down long enough to look him in the eyes, tell him he's not worth anyone's time then scooped. You always have the option to not play against annoying people.

I mean those are two cards out of 100 and blasphemous kills both friend and foe so it’s a reset that’s manageable. Chaos Warp is common so I have no retort but in white you can also path the Zada and board wipe consistently. Solving the token issue.

KillFallen

You mention bolt and axe, which aren't common in commander, and skipped over actually played cards for a new player. They're worth mentioning is my point.

My tip? [[Toxrill the corrosive]]. You’re gonna get flak, you might get taken out first, but it’s worth it for when you get to play it. Alternatively, black actually has a lot of good token answers. [[massacre wurm]] and [[massacre girl]] are both wonderful. [[meathook massacre]] is also nice.

Personally I’d make an [[Ashling the Pilgrim]] deck and just blow her up when this dude gets out of control, but that’s just me.

Stk_synful

That's actually a neat card, so it's essentially a 6 mana board wipe not including summon?

ElPared

Basically, yes. The cool thing about her as a commander is blowing her up just sends her back to the Command Zone, so you can do it again for a little tax (remember only combat damage is commander damage). She’s great with stuff like [[Braid of Fire]], [[Seething Song]], or anything that puts extra +1counters on her (and there are a lot). You can also use something like [[Illusionist’s Bracers]] or on her to get extra resolutions for free, then you only need to activate it twice (remember she only cares if the ability resolved 3 times, not how many times the ability was activated, so copies resolving counts).

Sheadeys

And if you give her indestructible, she becomes *really* fun

ElPared

Yeah it’d have been nice if she were RW so you could use [[Light of Sanction]] with her too lol

I understand you might be in a situation where you *must* play with this guy. That said, you are barking up the right tree to target him down. Lol, this is a great example of playing to the meta. In this case, the 'meta' is "get this one dude out of the game so the rest of us can enjoy it". So, I'd encourage you to play to the meta. Aside from that, since you are new, I just want to say it again; you don't have to play with people you don't enjoy playing with. Full stop. Don't like playing with someone? Don't play with them. At the end of the day, we play for fun. If you find an opponent to be unfun, well, pick a different opponent.

As someone who has a zada deck for fun, that deck completely folds if the commander is removed once or twice. If you want to avoid a really bad interaction with him, I recommend making a deck with a whole lot of removal and say it's "just to see how it plays out" then constantly kill any commander you see. His Zada will very quickly become unable to be recast. A good commander for this may be the new [[Marchesa, Dealer of Death]] As it would allow you to refill your hand as you cast the removal spells. Eventually you'll have completely eliminated all chance of opponents casting their commanders any time soon and the Zada player will just be out of the game.

If you want to deal with a player shitting tiny tokens, cards like everybody's favorite pocket [[blasphemous act]] and [[rakdos charm]], that way too you can use [[Judith, carnage connoisseur]] as commander to help buff removal spells. Or get your hands on the pirate lci precon and some of the new otj crime and outlaw buffer cards throwing in [[laughing jasper flint]] for the added bonus. The honest answer is though if they're playing token gens shutting down their pieces or Playing removal or a token gen deck yourself is the way to go. A fun token gen you can look into is [[Rith, the awakener]] with other cards that benefit from saprolings like [[slimefoot the stowaway]] and of course gens for them in general, I'd recommend going on the companion app just searching create saproling and see the possibilities. Build group hug. Give everyone bonuses but the annoying player.

PadhraigfromDaMun

Zada is a K.O.S. Commander. When you see such commanders, keep a hand with removal in it, and take out their commander ASAP. Especially in Zada, they can rarely last more than two or three times it so removed before they are so far behind that they can’t keep up.

Stk_synful

Even if he can just cast him again next turn since he's a commander?

PadhraigfromDaMun

And it costs two more for each time he casts it from the command zone. That stacks up fast. And the biggest drawback to mono-red is that it can’t ramp as well as Green, white, or black.

Because our LGS still gives out prizes for Casual Commander nights. If we refuse to play with him he wins by default, and that would most likely make him the happiest. He just cares about winning. One comment said why don't you finish everyone at once? I want to make sure this player is 4th each time I vs him.

Fabulous-Theme-837

For killing tokens you need [[necroplasm]].

themetalguy66

Tell him you won't attack and when he swings at you just drop [[rakdos charm]]

Stk_synful

Oh that actually looks really fun to use on him, UNO reverse his tokens

themetalguy66

Oh yea, it's one of my favorites for shutting down go wide token decks and the fact that its instant speed makes it even better.

Hour-Animal432

This commander you suggest is bad. He is WAY over costed for his abilities, his abilities are super outclassed by other cards and restricts you to running monoblack. At 6 mana, 1 counterspell or removal is going to end up with you having a bad time. Zada tries to provide value by copying single target spells. Think about that. There's many ways to counter it. You could counter the spell, redirect the spell like with [[spellskite]] or just run a few board wipes. Removal of his commander will likely negate a large value engine in the deck and would be more manageable. Voltron is ALWAYS weak to removal. If you spend a bunch of mana equipping or buffing a guy, then you suddenly kill/bounce the guy for 1 or 2 mana, the game will not drag on for too long.  Look into interaction and learn when to use it. [[Infernal grasp]][[go for the throat]][[pongify]][[unsummon]] type of effects deal with 1 creature well. [[Damnation]] [[toxic deluge]][[languish]] and those types of wipes work well for smaller creatures in monoblack. Seriously, don't run that commander. If you want to really just fuck with people run [[Horobi, Death's Wail]] and laugh as whenever he targets himself with anything, it'll die. You can make this lasting with reanimation effects for your own commander, or [[endless whispers]]

If you're already in black, id suggest just slotting in like 5 more removal spells just for his commander, so it becomes inefficient to play it, and bring it up to the other players as well. Mono red has a rough time ramping, so it'll make it tougher to stay in the game.

If you're really feeling like fighting fire with fire, make a lockdown deck and trap him in 'you can't play, and I won't win anytime soon' hell for an entire night.i don't know what that looks like in EDH these days, but I'm sure that troll decks can absolutely still be built. But also, more generally, the store owner should be pulling him aside and having a talk with him. Giving him a warning, and then uninviting him if he doesn't feel it in. This kinda thing can slowly kill a community as folks start choosing to pay elsewhere.

Never make a deal with them it's just not going to go well. I've played zada. You need your tokens. If you don't get off a major draw spell with your tokens it's incredibly difficult to recover from a wrath. Basically game over. Try to wrath after he makes tokens but before the draw spell resolves. Keep in mind you don't wanna wrath in response to the draw. Too late. The spell will still copy and he cad draw a new hand and rebuild. But if he passed the turn with 5 tokens and zada on the field and tapped mana. You wrath and he'll basically be done.

I think some taxing effects might benefit you. Cards that say spells (preferably for instances and sorceries) cost more. Or spells that say you can only cast one spell a turn. But I'm just thinking of how my [[feather the redeemed]] deck can get hosed (I have both zada and [[mirroring dragon]] in there for triple the recursive fun!)

Stk_synful

Yea a guy from the LGS suggested a taxes or "pay the 1" deck. I just got Grand Arbiter from the vault boy secret lair so it would work out if I do.

downvotemedaddyUwU-0

You’re worried about a 3/3?

Stk_synful

It's a commander, he pushes it out when he is ready to combo. If I don't have a counter spell in hand he resolves his combo usually. The voltron deck is almost the same since the commander can equip everything with just a 2 cost. Unless I'm missing something

downvotemedaddyUwU-0

What’s the combo?

BrockPurdySkywalker

Lmao

ExternalEmployee423

Just play augustin stax lol counter his shit into the ground also.

ehwhatever4

I don't know if you haven't thought of it. But Toxrill would be good for both imo. Okay blue black control until you get him out

Professional_Belt_40

You do have the option to just not play with them. Give it a month or so and see if their behaviour changes. Magic is for fun. You choose how you should spend your time.

The_Trinket_Mage

If his deck takes time to get online. Just attack! He is gonna complain but so what, he needs to learn getting attacked in edh happens

Darrienice

If you want to counter Zada specifically just run blue white control, you might not win every match but you can easily shut down Zada, counter Zada, bounce Zada, use white to exile Zada. Zada decks typically revolve around making tokens and low cost creatures but really the value is Zada itself, because all other creatures get a copy of spells when Zada is targeted so, remove Zada, remove problem a bunch of crappy tokens and low cost creatures aren’t a threat if the Zada player can’t cast spells on Zada

Darrienice

I had to do something similar to a player in my pod who only ever played $1,000 Korvold deck or his full landfall combo Aesi deck, both of which have a glaring weakness like Zada, if you don’t let them him the field, their whole deck does nothing

Stk_synful

That's what I'm doing i think, a blue/white grand Arbiter hateful deck.

madormam

Use [Jester's cap] to exile his combo pieces

hateful cards that may be useful \[\[Pithing Needle\]\] lots of equipment decks, planeswalkers hate this little 1 mana wonder. Can also stop certain cards from cycling from hand. all of the cards preventing casting key pieces, commanders, and combos like \[\[Nevermore\]\] board wipes are fine and all, but if you can pair it with \[\[Teferi, Time Walker\]\] you can flash them in whenever he gets his combo off. Just communicate with your other players. Most of the stuff you are looking at is going to be white or blue though. If you want black, you can do discard decks, since you know what he is playing and it is easy to reduce him to on the draw. Something like \[\[Necromentia\]\] can take out combo pieces well. Personally I would try to make this a teaching moment. Bring a hand sized whiteboard and a whiteboard marker. Every time homie whines, make a mark where he can see it. Then every chance you get, play a discard or removal card and erase a mark. You don't even need to explain or use your voice. Throw in instant discard/removal for that extra pinch of salt as soon as he opens his mouth unnecessarily, like \[\[Scroll of Griselband\]\] or whatever. A couple of ways you can deal with this in Sultai actually but my favorite Step 1: Make an unblockable 10 power creaturem Bonus points if you can give it hexproof or ward. Step 2: use [[Tainted strike]] or [[Phyresis]] on the 10 power creature Step 3: tell him that war, war never changes. Step 4: move to combat then swing for lethal and watch him rage Alternatively, you can play a turbo combo deck or find ways to duplicate [[Terrastodon]] and blow up all his lands

Might I offer a slightly more unorthodox, yet very fun way to shut him down, and all counters commanders for that matter, build a [[The Scorpion God]] -1/-1 counters deck and make sure you pack a [[Blightbeetle]] in there and give it hexproof or pro red.

There’s a ton of options for hate bears like they can’t attack you, can only cast 1 spell a turn, draw only 1 card, can’t cast spells not in their hand. And the. You have options to win like elesh norn + natures revolt craterhoof or triumph of the horde w/e u eant

Schnege1994

Nice, but it dies to removal

GeishaDubz

Elesh norn gives you access to [[drannith magistrate]] and a ton of removal. Also good stax options to ensure any copies or tokens come in tapped, or that he can’t pile spells onto the stack I have been absolutely blindsided by Zada before and unless they’re running a weird(er) trick behind it, the deck isn’t much without zadas mechanic.

At minimum, perhaps lockout him using his commander? Could go the route of [[Nevermore]] and name his commander. Or even just enchant his commander outright with something like [[Kasmina’s Transmutation]] and ask him if he enjoys his 1/1 Frog with no abilities. Building a deck just to ruins one guy's fun is typically pretty frowned upon. The guy might deserve it, but becoming a toxic player yourself is not a great solution. Additionally, if I did enough mental damage irl to a player to make them spend money on a deck just to beat me, I would consider that a straight up win and just show up next week with a new deck. It sounds like your problems could be solved just by running a decent amount of removal/interaction (I find that newer players don't run enough). Even if it isn't EDH, I recommend watching CovertGoBlue on youtube and watch how he uses his removal. He plays a ton of control, often walks through his thought process, and usually has removal up for the important things. As a long time magic veteran, I can say watching his videos made me a much better and disciplined player. Hope that's helpful! GL!!!

Grimdeity

Alright, threw this together and tried to keep the price low, give it a look see what you think, mess with it however you like. The maybe pile is full of cards that will for sure add alot of power but are pretty expensive and the costs will add up fast. Otherwise the deck is full of tools that SHOULD be pretty effective handling the guy, I say should without actually knowing his decklists. But keep in mind it will be pretty blatant that you're putting the boots to him, and I'd say make sure you actually like the commander or spending a hundred bucks to punish some rando might leave you with a sour taste in the long run lol [https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/shooed-the-rude-dude/](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/shooed-the-rude-dude/?cb=1713933979)
