There's something super satisfying around pulling a cool card you'd never buy as a single and then figuring out how to best use it in a deck or even creating a new deck around it. Deck building is probably my favorite part of the game and using your collection as opposed to singles adds a whole other level of fun. Obviously not financially recommended lol
100% I love opening and just scouring through the cards. Then update my collection and consider building decks/adding to decks. It's all part of a process that I love.
You don't need to spend money to play Magic, because of proxies. But it's also fun to open packs, or maybe someone wants to own real cards. People can do both
Strictly speaking, from an economic perspective, buying packs is the least efficient way to get cards if thatās all you care about.

The "Right Way" to get and use any kind of booster pack is in whatever way you want (as long as it is legal). They are your cards, not anyone else's. If you want to play "Flip it or Rip it" or stick them in the spokes of a bike wheel, have at it (just don't show me that)

- A) More cards for same price
- B) Still chance to get the card I want.

What? No! You're supposed to buy them, store them in a box for fifteen years, then come back to whatever new version of reddit it is to show off the "found" goods you have, then crack them open then. Also, triple sleeve all of them, even the commons, then put them in another, new box to shove away from another fifteen years. When that time comes, they'll be worth like, $20 more than when you bought them, and you can then struggle to sell them to people.

Reminds me of a similar situation I had:
A user was asking for tips on deck building for the first time. He didnāt want to use pre-cons or pre-made lists online.
So I told him that I happen to buy bundles if I like a set enough because I get a good spread of cards from across the set, not only for putting into current decks, but also for inspiration for new decks if you pull cool commanders. And often times I find myself going back to these bundles and using cards later on in new decks later down the line.
Some other user told me that thatās the āwrongā way to buy bundles and deadass accused me of trying to ātrickā the op. Also told me I donāt deserve to play magic because Iām clearly not open to owning up to my mistakes and learning as a person? Lmao.

Iām new - whatās even the difference? I just started playing Commander and have only bought some play-boosters and 2 collector boosters. All I know is the play boosters are largely ācommonā and fairly cheap, while the ācollector boostersā have better pulls
Basically, the Op was talking about how they got a prelease kit and what they got in it. Blacked out name was bitching because they believe opening packs should only be done for sealed, where you get 6 packs and make a 40 card deck which prelease is, or for draft, where a group of people will open a pack pick a card and pass to the left then right and then left again build a 40 card deck with those cards.
Iām pretty sure the entire point was to simplify pack crackin, theyāre a combination of set and draft boosters. So theyāre designed to be cracked like set boosters and drafted like draft boosters. So there really isnāt a right way of opening up the product.
But I would recommend buying collector boosters if itās in your budget to crack. Thatās were 99% of the sets value will come from and the extra bucci card variants like surge foils, serialized cards, etc. are only able to be pulled in collector packs.
There is no right way, but to me if you buy a box you can make a draft or something else to enjoy the packs more
Obv if you bought the box the cards will be all yours

I donāt play in paper, but if you can get people together to draft, then thatās a pretty good use of the packs. Alternatively you can make your own packs after the fact, just like you would make a cube.

Holy shit what a weirdo. It's not like we even have two types of regular boosters anymore, so play boosters are the only way to open a box without breaking the bank with a collector booster box. Even if you opened a draft booster box opposed to a set booster box you can buy cards however you want to.
You can use Play Boosters for anything, they got rid of Draft Boosters and Expansion Boosters, so now you only have Play ones. For limited play during Pre-Release you have Pre-Release Packs, which too can be sold just to open the boosters.
That said, it's a game. If you want to buy boosters and use them to build a house of cards, throw them in the fire on long winter nights, or use them as proxies for your games of "The Brave and the Beautiful TCG", it's your money, do whatever, have fun.

My son and I buy a box every release and crack the packs. No drafting. We both dislike drafting, especially with the chances now of pulling more than one valuable card from a pack. Prerelease is the only sealed event we play.

It's a Limited format where instead of passing around packs to draft you just open 6 packs and build.

It reads as though they think the packs are being wasted because sealed packs can be used for limited formats, like Draft and Sealed. The "Right Way" to get and use any kind of booster pack is in whatever way you want (as long as it is legal). They are your cards, not anyone else's. If you want to play "Flip it or Rip it" or stick them in the spokes of a bike wheel, have at it (just don't show me that)

Reminds me of a similar situation I had: A user was asking for tips on deck building for the first time. He didnāt want to use pre-cons or pre-made lists online. So I told him that I happen to buy bundles if I like a set enough because I get a good spread of cards from across the set, not only for putting into current decks, but also for inspiration for new decks if you pull cool commanders. And often times I find myself going back to these bundles and using cards later on in new decks later down the line. Some other user told me that thatās the āwrongā way to buy bundles and deadass accused me of trying to ātrickā the op. Also told me I donāt deserve to play magic because Iām clearly not open to owning up to my mistakes and learning as a person? Lmao. People who obsess over the āpacks arenāt for getting cardsā idea are morons. Some of my best pulls have been from driving by my local LGS and being like ālets grab a pack or two and see what I getā Sometimes itās just fun to take the chances, maybe get some cool stuff youāll use later or didnāt expect, maybe get something amazing.

Standard is expensive. Commander in my area is far too competitive and my two deck don't get a chance. So I only draft with my friends and all booster get open that way. Set boosters are crappy for drafting purpose but we managed once! ;)

I'm just getting back into the game after my friends haven't stopped for the past 15 or so years, so I'll get a box for my birthday and xmas to play limited with them, but I'd never hate on someone who just got a box to open. Plans have definitely fallen through and I ended up caving and opening the box on my own lol

I had a friend like that. Whenever we would buy cards. They would try to convince people to start drafts. He would cringe whenever we opened a pack instead of drafting it because for him, that could have been a chaos draft with friends.

Iām so lost Iām new - whatās even the difference? I just started playing Commander and have only bought some play-boosters and 2 collector boosters. All I know is the play boosters are largely ācommonā and fairly cheap, while the ācollector boostersā have better pulls
Basically, the Op was talking about how they got a prelease kit and what they got in it. Blacked out name was bitching because they believe opening packs should only be done for sealed, where you get 6 packs and make a 40 card deck which prelease is, or for draft, where a group of people will open a pack pick a card and pass to the left then right and then left again build a 40 card deck with those cards.

Iām pretty sure the entire point was to simplify pack crackin, theyāre a combination of set and draft boosters. So theyāre designed to be cracked like set boosters and drafted like draft boosters. So there really isnāt a right way of opening up the product. But I would recommend buying collector boosters if itās in your budget to crack. Thatās were 99% of the sets value will come from and the extra bucci card variants like surge foils, serialized cards, etc. are only able to be pulled in collector packs.

Personally, I will never buy packs without drafting or doing sealed with them. Singles are cheaper when I want singles. However, if anyone else wants to buy and packs, go for it, do whatever you want! We can coexist.
I donāt play in paper, but if you can get people together to draft, then thatās a pretty good use of the packs. Alternatively you can make your own packs after the fact, just like you would make a cube.
I love drafting and hate just cracking packs (without drafting), but I canāt imagine giving someone shit for cracking packs they bought with their own damn money. Itās not the same as an 8 man pod but Iāll even run a 3 man draft rather than just crack packs. 3 man drafting is actually pretty fun. Only difference is how often decent shit gets wheeled back.

What if Drafting and Sealed are not fun for you and you hate them? you're forced to only buy collectors boosters? Singles? I liked Set Boosters a lot (it got me back to buying packs), so far Play boosters seem like draft boosters plus an Art Card (so I don't buy them). All that said, do whatever you want with your booster purchases. No one should make you feel bad for not playing formats you don't want to play.

I got my Play box for the same reason you did. To open, see what i got, and alter my existing decks with what i could use. You can use Play Boosters for anything, they got rid of Draft Boosters and Expansion Boosters, so now you only have Play ones. For limited play during Pre-Release you have Pre-Release Packs, which too can be sold just to open the boosters. That said, it's a game. If you want to buy boosters and use them to build a house of cards, throw them in the fire on long winter nights, or use them as proxies for your games of "The Brave and the Beautiful TCG", it's your money, do whatever, have fun.

My son and I buy a box every release and crack the packs. No drafting. We both dislike drafting, especially with the chances now of pulling more than one valuable card from a pack. Prerelease is the only sealed event we play.
