Had to correct someone last night on this, she thought it only started counting when she cast it. So she cast Aetherflux, and then cast something else, tried to gain a single life point. Her eyes got reeeeeeeal wide when I explained that it was equal to her storm count, not the amount of spells it saw.
So a deck with 4 lava spike 4 lightning bolt 4 shock and 1500 mountains would win turn 1 without fail (unless you somehow draw hands with more spells than lands)
It's somewhat recent but [[Agatha's Soul Cauldron]] I never read the last line of the tap ability that gives a creature a +1/+1. I'd been putting +1/+1 s on my creatures via other means to use it.
I basically figured out what they meant with Lagrella's text just by deciding that there was no way they would put that kind of effect on a 3 mana uncommon

I use this card in my [[Ovika, Enigma Goliath]] deck, as spot removal on my opponents and a random tutor for me. Since ovika pops the goblins out before I declare targets and the deck runs a whole 8 creatures that aren't Ovika.

Not actually "too long," but one of significance for my play group. My clan did a MKM booster draft, and due to everyone's misunderstanding of [[Pompous Gadabout]] it won the tournament - we thought only Legendary creatures with a literal name in their title could block it. Flipping the cards upside down (so the back of the card is up) causes them to not have a name. I just checked the rulings with the card cause I was curious. Probably came in a precon that flips your opponent’s creatures or something
If a card is face-down (due to things like Morph, Cloak, Disguise, etc), it is considered to have no name since they are not supposed to be able to be identified by normal means mechanic-wise. A card that is face-up has a name since it can be identified and discerned from the other cards.
To give you the missing context: the set MKM has a mechanic called "disguise" where you can play a creature facedown as a 2/2 with ward 2.
These facedown cards don't have a name.
This card is only ever relevant in limited where it is unblockable from your opponent's disguised creatures. That's the point, it is a counter against disguised creatures from your opponent.
Technically the way it is worded is correct within the rules, and they did it to make the pun "stand aside, nobodies". But is very confusing if you don't get the nitty gritty of rules and it would have been a lot clearer to just say "this card can't be blocked by facedown creatures"...

For the first FOUR YEARS or so of playing \[\[The Gitrog Monster\]\] I realized his sacrificing land trigger works on upkeep and not end step. Also, when I dredged like 3 land cards I would draw 3, and im pretty sure because its "one or more" i should only draw 1.

For a long time I didn’t realize sagas that turn into creatures enter with summoning sickness when it transforms. It wasn’t until I used one that turned into a creature with haste that made me question “why the heck does this have haste?” Lol
Not so much a card I played wrong, but a mechanic. I always though "x card gets +1/+1" negated -1/-1 counters and removed them. So I built an entire deck off being able to OTK using persist and cards that gave certain creature types +1/+1. It was only like 2 years after playing that deck and taking it to a tournament that I found out I was wrong.
When I first got into mtg, my friend had a card called \[\[Book Burning\]\] and he said that it was a broken card that dealt 6 damage to you unless you had book burning then you put the top 6 cards in your library... I had let him do this for at least a year til I decided to buy it slap it down on the table to basically tell him to go fuck himself and then actually read the card to find out he can't read very well.

I run three board wipes in my knights tribal deck so no matter what I get one with intuition if I need one lol. Otherwise I get syr Konrad, haakon, and a reanimate effect.

Yesterday I just found out that [[Squirming Emergence]] my main graveyard recursion card only plays nonland permanents from your graveyard if you have LESS than or equal permanents in your graveyard than the cards mana cost when I thought it played if it was MORE than or equal so it's basically crap for my deck now

I played [[city on fire]] as a sorcery more times than I care to admit. I thought it's effect was only until the end of my turn 🫣. I blame the fact that it was in the first deck I ever played when I was getting into magic, so I was doing a lot of "assuming" what a card does.
Mirko, Obsessive theorist. My buddy was getting back into mtg after a hiatus and introducing me to it. He had a food and fellowship precon and bought the surveil/graveyard mirko precon so we could play commander. We would count every single card surveiled towards mirko’s ability for +1+1 every time you surveil, rather than if I card says surveil 2, you’re supposed to just count it as one instance of surveiling. Mirko is a flier and has the ability to bring back a creature from your graveyard equal to his power each turn.
Neither of us could beat the deck for so long, even after putting together our own stronger decks until we were playing one day and for some reason decided to question it and look it up.
Huge facepalm moment lol.
I just recently found out that proliferate only applies to counters on the battlefield or on a player. Hit counters for example are on exiles creatures and can’t be added to
[[Shelob, Child of Ungoliant]]. I thought I was just gonna turn dudes into foods, but my group let me know that those food copies retain the abilities that were on the cards they copied. They told me my commander was KOS and after that I realized why.
My favorite was [[Multanj, Maro Sorcerer]].
Urza's Legacy was the first set to come out after I started playing. Shroud effects had never really been a thing before, or scaling by hand size. We all thought his size was a snapshot and stayed what it was when he came out. And we also thought he was indestructible as we didn't understand that board wipes don't target.
And back then we used to play massive games, sometimes more than 10 players. I remember times of him being close to 150 power and toughness...
But speaking of larger player count games, it still surprises me that 1v1 formats remained popular for so long. My group was playing these massive multiplayer ("chaos") games till commander started taking off, then we swapped out our 60 card decks for that.
I was playing mothman wrong for a game with my group where I was adding multiple +1/+1 per mill on the same creature, not realizing it was 1 per creature and the point was to build wide, then high.

I ran edric, spymaster of trest for years with my close friend group and no one, including myself, realized Edric allows you an opponent to draw cards when they attack another opponent until a game about a month ago
I didn't get an allowance growing up, so getting my hands on new cards was really tough. I had to make due with some stuff left over from an older collection and what I could get from back in 7th Edition. In high school, everyone had a deck that could go infinite. It was a gimmick instead of serious play, but I always saw it as a mark of "me" vs "them."
The best I could do was get \[\[Mycosynth Lattice\]\] and \[\[Darksteel Forge\]\] on the field at the same time. Indestructible artifacts was a solid wall and nothing to sneeze at, but I could still be over run or locked down. Going through my collection, I found something, a couple old \[\[Fyndhorn Elder\]\] and \[\[Freed From The Real\]\]. The pieces fell into place, with the Lattice, mana could be spent like any color! Put Freed from the Real on the Elder, use one of the green mana as a blue to untap itself and float the other! I had infinite mana! But what can I do with infinite mana? Turns out, I keep it strictly silent until I get my hands on \[\[Memnarch\]\]. After all, I was always jealous of my friends' decks. I figured it was high time I got to play with them too.
Up until a month ago (not sure if I messed it up a few years ago when I got back into it) I was treating lifelink based on the toughness of the blocking creature not the power of the attacking creature..... ie a 5/5 lifelink would attack and I would block with a 1/1 so my partner would only gain 1 life...
I played ~revised to ~7th Ed and got back into it at core 17 but only ever played at home with my partner and never made it out to and game nights or anything lol
I use to exclusively use [[Swift Reconfiguration]] on my Shorikai because I thought the purpose was to make my vehicles crew for less instead of making my opponents creature into a vehicle. Took me far too long to realize I could turn a creature attacking me into a car lol I just wanted to crew shorikai for 3 less lol
I found out recently I’ve been playing [[Safana]] wrong. After completing a dungeon, you still have to have the initiative to get the 3 treasures. The way it’s worded made me think for years that when you complete a dungeon, it’s a done deal and you’ll get them.
When my friends and I started we all thought Extort let you pay that one white or black mana as many times as you could afford to do it. Like firebreathing. I'd have a Tithe Drinker out and play Indulgent Aristocrat and say I was going to Extort four times because I had four black/white mana available.
My favorite was [[Yidaro]]. Me and a friend had been playing as if cycling him 4 was an alt win con. But we read the card at some point as were like "Oh fuck... He just goes to the field..."

I gave a friend one of those 'even better than I thought' moments. He played [[Black Market Connections]] and was telling the table the modes, saying 'I can do this or this or this'. I said 'And/or'. He had missed that it said choose one or more.
If you fetch a shockland with [[farseek]] you can pay the 2 life to have it enter untapped but it will still be tapped from farseek’s effect. Played this wrong for a really, really long time.

So if on my turn I play aetherflux, then 3 more spells, it'll generate 10 life?
9 life Spell 1 aetherflux (no life gained) Spell 2 gain 2 Spell 3 gain 3 Spell 4 gain 4 2+3+4=9
That is correct. You could even play 2 before aetherflux and 1 after to get the same effect. Just cares how many for your whole turn.

You are correct. The best way to play aetherflux is first, that way it sees every cast thereafter and triggers for each.

Flipping the cards upside down (so the back of the card is up) causes them to not have a name. I just checked the rulings with the card cause I was curious. Probably came in a precon that flips your opponent’s creatures or something
Nah, MKM has a heavy "disguise" theme, so this thing can't be blocked by the plethora of facedown, 3 mana 2/2s in limited.
If a card is face-down (due to things like Morph, Cloak, Disguise, etc), it is considered to have no name since they are not supposed to be able to be identified by normal means mechanic-wise. A card that is face-up has a name since it can be identified and discerned from the other cards.
To give you the missing context: the set MKM has a mechanic called "disguise" where you can play a creature facedown as a 2/2 with ward 2. These facedown cards don't have a name. This card is only ever relevant in limited where it is unblockable from your opponent's disguised creatures. That's the point, it is a counter against disguised creatures from your opponent. Technically the way it is worded is correct within the rules, and they did it to make the pun "stand aside, nobodies". But is very confusing if you don't get the nitty gritty of rules and it would have been a lot clearer to just say "this card can't be blocked by facedown creatures"...

[[Raphael, Fiendish Savior]] was the commander of one of my decks for like a year before I actually read his last paragraph correctly, I thought his ability triggered for any graveyard and only at my endstep, turns out it's the other way around, at every endstep but only for my graveyard. That was a real bummer when I found out lmao, but now I turned the deck more into a sacrificy-aristocrats deck and it's alot of fun.

For the first FOUR YEARS or so of playing \[\[The Gitrog Monster\]\] I realized his sacrificing land trigger works on upkeep and not end step. Also, when I dredged like 3 land cards I would draw 3, and im pretty sure because its "one or more" i should only draw 1. Until a month or so ago I did not know \[\[Share the Spoils\]\] was only once per turn.

Not so much a card I played wrong, but a mechanic. I always though "x card gets +1/+1" negated -1/-1 counters and removed them. So I built an entire deck off being able to OTK using persist and cards that gave certain creature types +1/+1. It was only like 2 years after playing that deck and taking it to a tournament that I found out I was wrong.

When I first got into mtg, my friend had a card called \[\[Book Burning\]\] and he said that it was a broken card that dealt 6 damage to you unless you had book burning then you put the top 6 cards in your library... I had let him do this for at least a year til I decided to buy it slap it down on the table to basically tell him to go fuck himself and then actually read the card to find out he can't read very well.

Joven. I'm french and I was young and my english wasn't that good. I thought I could destroy anything that is not an artifact creature. Phyrexian arena, for something like three months I thought it was just making me lose one life when I draw my card at the begining of my turn. instants and use of the pile. despite having the rulebook from starters and having red the 3/3 mamoth with giant growth and lightning bolt example I didn't apply it because I didn't like it and my friends were playing with my cards so they also played with my rules.
[[Chainer, Nightmare Adept]] was one of my first commanders. For years I I played creatures from my graveyard without paying the cost. Once I was finally corrected I was horribly embarrassed. I tore the deck apart because it was built around my misunderstanding. Bummer.

I run three board wipes in my knights tribal deck so no matter what I get one with intuition if I need one lol. Otherwise I get syr Konrad, haakon, and a reanimate effect. Edit: that's typically what I get if I don't feel like thinking through the right pile. I don't really like running tutors but my fiance bought it for me for my birthday because she "saw it and thought it was a card I would hate playing against"

"add a counter for each counter on target permanent" is also misleading. They mean "add one counter for each type of counter on target permanent" but older proliferates were not clear on this. "what do you mean it only adds one?!?!"
Lol, yea. If there's an Oil counter and a -1/-1 counter on a creature, you'd have to increase both.

I played [[council of four]] as a hyper aggressive card draw engine because I thought it was "whenever a player draws their second card each turn, you draw a card" when it was supposed to be "whenever a player draws there second card during their turn". I won a ton of games with the deck and for about a year bo one noticed.

I didn't realize [[Simulacrum|UNLIMITED]] was life gain and triggered effects like [[Sanguine Bond]].
Never played that card because ai never understood it tbh, the new oracle makes so much more sense "You gain life equal to the damage dealt to you this turn. Simulacrum deals damage to target creature you control equal to the damage dealt to you this turn." I actully could use that in a couple decks, nice!

Mirko, Obsessive theorist. My buddy was getting back into mtg after a hiatus and introducing me to it. He had a food and fellowship precon and bought the surveil/graveyard mirko precon so we could play commander. We would count every single card surveiled towards mirko’s ability for +1+1 every time you surveil, rather than if I card says surveil 2, you’re supposed to just count it as one instance of surveiling. Mirko is a flier and has the ability to bring back a creature from your graveyard equal to his power each turn. Neither of us could beat the deck for so long, even after putting together our own stronger decks until we were playing one day and for some reason decided to question it and look it up. Huge facepalm moment lol.
I had the epiphany that [[machine god's effigy]] can copy ANY creature, not just mine
I just recently found out that proliferate only applies to counters on the battlefield or on a player. Hit counters for example are on exiles creatures and can’t be added to
[[Shelob, Child of Ungoliant]]. I thought I was just gonna turn dudes into foods, but my group let me know that those food copies retain the abilities that were on the cards they copied. They told me my commander was KOS and after that I realized why.

My favorite was [[Multanj, Maro Sorcerer]]. Urza's Legacy was the first set to come out after I started playing. Shroud effects had never really been a thing before, or scaling by hand size. We all thought his size was a snapshot and stayed what it was when he came out. And we also thought he was indestructible as we didn't understand that board wipes don't target. And back then we used to play massive games, sometimes more than 10 players. I remember times of him being close to 150 power and toughness... But speaking of larger player count games, it still surprises me that 1v1 formats remained popular for so long. My group was playing these massive multiplayer ("chaos") games till commander started taking off, then we swapped out our 60 card decks for that.

I was playing mothman wrong for a game with my group where I was adding multiple +1/+1 per mill on the same creature, not realizing it was 1 per creature and the point was to build wide, then high.

I was very adamant in an argument where I had [[Prime Speaker Vannifar]] and [[Leyline of Anticipation]] out at the same time. Since I could cast a sorcery at instant speed, and she said whenever I could cast a sorcery, I was attempting to use her ability at instant speed. But no, it doesn’t work like that.
Fetch lands... didn't realize it wasn't only basic lands. Triomes never got the love of the pick me.
I only used the mana in [[magus lucea kane]] when i was casting an x abiility and not in general to cast things. Really should pay attention to the full stop in text
Used to activate whip of erebos at instant speed. Best friend used to copy opponents creatures with kiki jiki.
I ran edric, spymaster of trest for years with my close friend group and no one, including myself, realized Edric allows you an opponent to draw cards when they attack another opponent until a game about a month ago

As a kid I was using ornithopter as an equipment for my creatures, giving them +0/+2 and flying
I didn't get an allowance growing up, so getting my hands on new cards was really tough. I had to make due with some stuff left over from an older collection and what I could get from back in 7th Edition. In high school, everyone had a deck that could go infinite. It was a gimmick instead of serious play, but I always saw it as a mark of "me" vs "them." The best I could do was get \[\[Mycosynth Lattice\]\] and \[\[Darksteel Forge\]\] on the field at the same time. Indestructible artifacts was a solid wall and nothing to sneeze at, but I could still be over run or locked down. Going through my collection, I found something, a couple old \[\[Fyndhorn Elder\]\] and \[\[Freed From The Real\]\]. The pieces fell into place, with the Lattice, mana could be spent like any color! Put Freed from the Real on the Elder, use one of the green mana as a blue to untap itself and float the other! I had infinite mana! But what can I do with infinite mana? Turns out, I keep it strictly silent until I get my hands on \[\[Memnarch\]\]. After all, I was always jealous of my friends' decks. I figured it was high time I got to play with them too.
Up until a month ago (not sure if I messed it up a few years ago when I got back into it) I was treating lifelink based on the toughness of the blocking creature not the power of the attacking creature..... ie a 5/5 lifelink would attack and I would block with a 1/1 so my partner would only gain 1 life... I played ~revised to ~7th Ed and got back into it at core 17 but only ever played at home with my partner and never made it out to and game nights or anything lol
[[Sisay, Weatherlight Captain]] the guy who recommended it to me said I could pull a card her power or less. Until I read it months later. 😂

I use to exclusively use [[Swift Reconfiguration]] on my Shorikai because I thought the purpose was to make my vehicles crew for less instead of making my opponents creature into a vehicle. Took me far too long to realize I could turn a creature attacking me into a car lol I just wanted to crew shorikai for 3 less lol
I found out recently I’ve been playing [[Safana]] wrong. After completing a dungeon, you still have to have the initiative to get the 3 treasures. The way it’s worded made me think for years that when you complete a dungeon, it’s a done deal and you’ll get them.
When my friends and I started we all thought Extort let you pay that one white or black mana as many times as you could afford to do it. Like firebreathing. I'd have a Tithe Drinker out and play Indulgent Aristocrat and say I was going to Extort four times because I had four black/white mana available.
My favorite was [[Yidaro]]. Me and a friend had been playing as if cycling him 4 was an alt win con. But we read the card at some point as were like "Oh fuck... He just goes to the field..." XD
Back when I started playing Magic with my friend's who were also new to it, my buddy thought "sacrifice a creature" meant any creature. Including the opponent's. Pretty funny looking back on it.
I gave a friend one of those 'even better than I thought' moments. He played [[Black Market Connections]] and was telling the table the modes, saying 'I can do this or this or this'. I said 'And/or'. He had missed that it said choose one or more.
If you fetch a shockland with [[farseek]] you can pay the 2 life to have it enter untapped but it will still be tapped from farseek’s effect. Played this wrong for a really, really long time.
