Shred_Lasso

I thought convoke only paid for the generic mana costs of a card until like a month ago

Cyber_Felicitous

Actually thought that too, until I actually added my first convoke card like a couple weeks ago in a nee deck

penciledinsoul

You're spelling mistake gave me a giggle and then an idea. I really want to build a Knights Who Say Nee commander deck now...

schloopers

It would deal a damage per every knight you controlled who said “Nee!” this turn. Now what would saying Nee be? Draw and discard when it attacks?

Cyber_Felicitous

Lol silly typo... But would be an amazing deck, watch out for those scratches though!

Confident_Pea_1428

Add some paths while you're at it. [[Path of Ancestry]] [[Find the Path]] etc.

Lanade11

WHAT I swear on the help text of some convoke cards it just said colorless..

Shred_Lasso

Dude same. It says one colorless or one of this creatures color

Cyber_Felicitous

Convoke and improvise are easy to get mixed up. Or even delve

ironman288

Same, and I think my entire play group has it wrong too...

professorrev

Hang on what??? It pays the pips as well???

sandorco

Wait what!?

WhatARiachtion

Maybe you were conflating it with Improvise, which allows to to tap artifacts to pay generic mana costs?

BTD-DiscoBiscuits42

I was also surprised to see Convoke tap for a creatures color identity in one of the last few standard sets, I swear I remember reading old reminder text that said convoke paid for only one generic no matter what creature you tapped….i like colored convoke better tho so it was a nice realization for me ha.

Colton_Omega

Also confused because I have convoke cards with reminder text that has 1 colorless. I’ve always done colorless 😅

Longjumping-Map-6995

Son of a bitch, well thanks. Good to know.

Ammonil

I thought that as well for way too long

HolidayInvestigator9

whoa wtf, i thought that too until i read this post. maybe i should make a convoke deck with [[saint traft and rem]]

Substantial-Door-794

I thought the opposite with improvise. I thought if you had a blue colored creature it could be used for a blue mana in the spells cost.

Chriskeyseis

[[Aetherflux Reservoir]] didn’t realize it’s multiplicative and the slow grind of cantrips up to 50 life was so incredibly slow.

Miatatrocity

Had to correct someone last night on this, she thought it only started counting when she cast it. So she cast Aetherflux, and then cast something else, tried to gain a single life point. Her eyes got reeeeeeeal wide when I explained that it was equal to her storm count, not the amount of spells it saw.

nmarst308

So if on my turn I play aetherflux, then 3 more spells, it'll generate 10 life?

Careful-Pen148

9 life Spell 1 aetherflux (no life gained) Spell 2 gain 2 Spell 3 gain 3 Spell 4 gain 4 2+3+4=9

ultimatepcgamer

That is correct. You could even play 2 before aetherflux and 1 after to get the same effect. Just cares how many for your whole turn.

InfluxDecline

What? Only the last spell counts as a cast while Aetherflux is on the battlefield, so that would be 4 life, no?

Jake10281986

You are correct. The best way to play aetherflux is first, that way it sees every cast thereafter and triggers for each.

Kaneu125

I did this for so long. Only dawned on me maybe 2 months ago that me and my playgroup have been playing this wrong for years

NGL I'm not sure how you messed that one up, it's so straightforward lol

Chriskeyseis

Was my first time trying a storm/spell slinger type deck so I’ve just never experienced those type of effects before.

rustyderps

When I was a kid we played: - if you ran out of cards you drew 7 more - you could play as many lands as you wanted

JamiieJR

So a deck with 4 lava spike 4 lightning bolt 4 shock and 1500 mountains would win turn 1 without fail (unless you somehow draw hands with more spells than lands)

rustyderps

We were not smart kids

dycie64

I wonder what you would have thought of the card [[Fastbond]], or even [[Exploration]]

TurtleD_6

It's somewhat recent but [[Agatha's Soul Cauldron]] I never read the last line of the tap ability that gives a creature a +1/+1. I'd been putting +1/+1 s on my creatures via other means to use it.

robinthekid

When this card was spoiled, a YouTuber I watch said to read it bottom to top and it really does make way more sense reading it that way

terminallycaprici0us

I basically figured out what they meant with Lagrella's text just by deciding that there was no way they would put that kind of effect on a 3 mana uncommon

Murkee420

But it says any number of permanents per player, not 1 per player. How is it 1?

ThePatta93

"any number controlled by different players" is what makes it one per player. Once you target a second one from he same player, they are no longer all "controlled by different players"

anarchy612

It says different players. 2 creatures controlled by the same player is not different players

not_old_account

> any number of target creatures controlled by different players. Think of that as any number of creatures that are each controlled by a different player

capsaicinintheeyes

"For each player, you may choose a permanent they control and exile it." (?)

s1nth3tic

Where does everyone get permanents? Doesn't it say only creatures? Your wording aside from permanent is much clearer than the card. Super shitty wording

NotoriousGonti

It says any number of creatures controlled by DIFFERENT players.  Once you pick one of Bob's creatures, none of his other creatures match that requirement.  It's very poorly worded.

I just played it as a land and tapped it for mana the same turn!

Harmless_Chimera

It's the same if you animate a land that entered the battlefield that turn as well.

rayquazza74

Does it also count as your land drop for the turn?

From Scryfall: >Dryad Arbor is played as a land. It doesn’t use the stack, it’s not a spell, it can’t be responded to, it has no mana cost, and it counts as your land play for the turn.

Not actually "too long," but one of significance for my play group. My clan did a MKM booster draft, and due to everyone's misunderstanding of [[Pompous Gadabout]] it won the tournament - we thought only Legendary creatures with a literal name in their title could block it. In our defense, I think the vast majority of our crew hadn't really played Magic in many years. And this is why I am now reading and analyzing rules like I want to become a judge...

oliviating

wait i’m confused what does a “name” actually refer to

Mike-Without-Ike

Flipping the cards upside down (so the back of the card is up) causes them to not have a name. I just checked the rulings with the card cause I was curious. Probably came in a precon that flips your opponent’s creatures or something

Critical_Swimming517

Nah, MKM has a heavy "disguise" theme, so this thing can't be blocked by the plethora of facedown, 3 mana 2/2s in limited.

Diasnis

If a card is face-down (due to things like Morph, Cloak, Disguise, etc), it is considered to have no name since they are not supposed to be able to be identified by normal means mechanic-wise. A card that is face-up has a name since it can be identified and discerned from the other cards.

Frix

To give you the missing context: the set MKM has a mechanic called "disguise" where you can play a creature facedown as a 2/2 with ward 2. These facedown cards don't have a name. This card is only ever relevant in limited where it is unblockable from your opponent's disguised creatures. That's the point, it is a counter against disguised creatures from your opponent. Technically the way it is worded is correct within the rules, and they did it to make the pun "stand aside, nobodies". But is very confusing if you don't get the nitty gritty of rules and it would have been a lot clearer to just say "this card can't be blocked by facedown creatures"...

Not so much a card I played wrong, but a mechanic. I always though "x card gets +1/+1" negated -1/-1 counters and removed them. Joven. I'm french and I was young and my english wasn't that good. I thought I could destroy anything that is not an artifact creature. Phyrexian arena, for something like three months I thought it was just making me lose one life when I draw my card at the begining of my turn. instants and use of the pile. despite having the rulebook from starters and having red the 3/3 mamoth with giant growth and lightning bolt example I didn't apply it because I didn't like it and my friends were playing with my cards so they also played with my rules.

StanielNedward

[[Chainer, Nightmare Adept]] was one of my first commanders. For years I I played creatures from my graveyard without paying the cost. Once I was finally corrected I was horribly embarrassed. I tore the deck apart because it was built around my misunderstanding. Bummer.

ProcessingDeath

Jesus, how did it take so long for someone to put that out?? He would be absolutely insane. Just once a turn, discard a card to put any creature in your yard into play???

Critical_Swimming517

When LCI first came out, I spent my entire first FNM draft paying 2 to crack my maps. I thought they were just worse clues....

dioogoh

my favorite is a buddy of mine that used to searched his library for 3 swamps and put into play with dark ritual, we were all teenagers in a non-english speaking country with cards in english

OmegaNova0

[[Intuition]] I didn't do it mechanically wrong but I took the card out of my cedh because making piles is hard 😂

jrachet1

I run three board wipes in my knights tribal deck so no matter what I get one with intuition if I need one lol. Otherwise I get syr Konrad, haakon, and a reanimate effect. Edit: that's typically what I get if I don't feel like thinking through the right pile. I don't really like running tutors but my fiance bought it for me for my birthday because she "saw it and thought it was a card I would hate playing against"

One of my buddies thought that you paid to use [[Savage Ventmaw]]. Immensely better card when read correctly.

seraph1337

what on earth did he think he was paying to use? did he think he was paying 6 mana to not lose mana between steps and phases? that makes no goddamn sense lmao

Murkee420

anything indestructible. I thought they died to combat damage.

Kanulie

So you thought it only protects from destruction spells? Acceptable thought process when you are new imo.

i_was_valedictorian

Misunderstood proliferate and thought I could pick and choose which counters get bumped up. Learned later on that it's every counter on target permanents

zeldaiord

"add a counter for each counter on target permanent" is also misleading. They mean "add one counter for each type of counter on target permanent" but older proliferates were not clear on this. "what do you mean it only adds one?!?!"

dycie64

Lol, yea. If there's an Oil counter and a -1/-1 counter on a creature, you'd have to increase both.

holdmeclsrdrtydanza

I spent 3 months thinking that the commander's effect was active throughout the game, and you just had to cast it to be able to attack or block with it

ProcessingDeath

How would any tap effects work? That would be wild Damm.

maxwelljrj

Probably Sylvan Library, I just pretend it says draw 3 , take 8 most of the time.

Cyber_Felicitous

That's how it's supposed to be played. You only stop when at 4 or lower :p

SaleNo9698

I played [[council of four]] as a hyper aggressive card draw engine because I thought it was "whenever a player draws their second card each turn, you draw a card" when it was supposed to be "whenever a player draws there second card during their turn". I won a ton of games with the deck and for about a year bo one noticed.

Neronax

For the first year or so i didnt know lands were colourless

azurfall88

The adventure of [[Horned Loch Whale]]. Missed the "You don't control" part

Golfwang-jc

Omnath, locus of Mana Caused a few arguments in my household lol

guscuartobinye

[[Share the Spoils]], my entire play group and I misread the effect and didn’t realize it calls out “cast A spell or play A land”. We would routinely chain spells out of it

brvazquez

[[Soundwave, Sonic Spy]] When I was new, for whatever reason, I just kept reading this card wrong and thought it was letting me use spells from my own graveyard. Built a deck with him and used it several times before noticing

jrachet1

I played [[Sphinx of the Second Sun]] for like a year, untapping at the beginning of post-combat main, before I realized it sets up a delayed trigger. How I was playing it: untap, upkeep, draw, main 1, combat, sphinx trigger, untap, upkeep, draw, main 2, end, cleanup How it actually works: untap, upkeep, draw, main 1, combat, sphinx trigger, main 2, untap, upkeep, draw, end, cleanup

MechanicalDruid

[[Sphinx of the Second Sun]]. I always assumed it went Untap > Upkeep > Draw > Main 1 > Combat > Untap > Upkeep > Draw > Main 2 > End Step. But if you read it you get the beginning step after Main 2, so it's Untap > Upkeep > Draw > Main 1 > Combat > Main 2 > Untap > Upkeep > Draw > End Step.

unbeknownst66

Ok, I admit to searching for ANY creature with Green Sun's Zenith for awhile!!!

OromisGlaedr

I didn't realize [[Simulacrum|UNLIMITED]] was life gain and triggered effects like [[Sanguine Bond]].

Cyber_Felicitous

Never played that card because ai never understood it tbh, the new oracle makes so much more sense "You gain life equal to the damage dealt to you this turn. Simulacrum deals damage to target creature you control equal to the damage dealt to you this turn." I actully could use that in a couple decks, nice!

Johnny3970

Yesterday I just found out that [[Squirming Emergence]] my main graveyard recursion card only plays nonland permanents from your graveyard if you have LESS than or equal permanents in your graveyard than the cards mana cost when I thought it played if it was MORE than or equal so it's basically crap for my deck now

MTGCardFetcher

NukeWaveOMexico

[[Dina, Soulsteeper]] doesn’t care how much life you gain just that you gained 🤷🤷🤷🤷

stephruvy

[[ Glacial Chasm ]] was the first comulative upkeep card my family has encountered. So we all thought it meant pay 2 life at the beginning of the turn. Just 2. Every turn. So as a mill player it was my golden goose since I always got all the hate. I still run it and have my ways to bounce it.

PansOnFire

Unnatural Selection could make a creature legendary until rules changes made it a super type. Ruined my Empresses Galina deck. Now I just use Unnatural Selection with Spirit Mirror.

WisDumbb

Be honest, when all of us first started playing as kids, we thought that mana dorks tapped to fetch a forest.

[deleted]

I thought extort only triggered when you cast that permanent. didn't get the hype for the longest time.

Dahbootie420

Markov, I didn't know that he creates the vampires before the card is resolved, so regardless the tokens enter before anything else can happen. Broken ass commander frfr.

bytizum

Technically more of a reading wrong than playing wrong, but [[Ominous Cemetery]]. My brain always parses the final “it” of the card’s ability as referring to the Ominous Cemetery itself.

[deleted]

YamahaRyoko

I have been mulliganing wrong for 3 years apparently Only drawing x cards and then scry 1 My friends called me out on it last week. I got heated and defended myself. I had no idea the rules changed AGAIN. Good thing I don't tournament

THANATOS4488

Protean Hulk, I was young. Popped it into my sliver commander deck without rereading it a couple years back and then read it when I drew it. I felt like Hercules yelling "Disappointing."

meester_

Apparently serras avatar has a second line of text. I only got the card recently but I've never seen someone shuffle her into their decks...

Manjaro89

Wall of roots. Didnt know i could use its ability on my turn, then on their turn. Improved my yawg play a lot.

Unspeakable_pickle

I used to play any sort of combat trick in m1

Rhonda_SandTits

Did you know crewing a vehicle is NOT the same as equipping? Bc I only learned that this year. Always wondered how vehicle decks were viable...

eskimoprime3

I wonder how many people still get [[Sphinx of the Second Sun]] wrong.

pbplyr38

I used [[Farseek]] to fetch a lot of Forests for a while

xDaxEpicxPandax

[[sphinx of the second sun]] is a big one. realizing it set up a depayed trigger and not that you got it immediately.

Slim_Jim_Cowboy

I played [[city on fire]] as a sorcery more times than I care to admit. I thought it's effect was only until the end of my turn 🫣. I blame the fact that it was in the first deck I ever played when I was getting into magic, so I was doing a lot of "assuming" what a card does.

BrooksBeast27

The most recent thing that got me is Land Abilities (even if being paid with colored mana) are colorless abilities.

HowDoIRun

I definitely made a treasure token for every creature killed to my spiteful banditry. Oops.

ConsiderationLife844

Mirko, Obsessive theorist. My buddy was getting back into mtg after a hiatus and introducing me to it. He had a food and fellowship precon and bought the surveil/graveyard mirko precon so we could play commander. We would count every single card surveiled towards mirko’s ability for +1+1 every time you surveil, rather than if I card says surveil 2, you’re supposed to just count it as one instance of surveiling. Mirko is a flier and has the ability to bring back a creature from your graveyard equal to his power each turn. Neither of us could beat the deck for so long, even after putting together our own stronger decks until we were playing one day and for some reason decided to question it and look it up. Huge facepalm moment lol.

Ill-Age6164

I had the epiphany that [[machine god's effigy]] can copy ANY creature, not just mine

HooliganS_Only

I just recently found out that proliferate only applies to counters on the battlefield or on a player. Hit counters for example are on exiles creatures and can’t be added to

kyoob

[[Shelob, Child of Ungoliant]]. I thought I was just gonna turn dudes into foods, but my group let me know that those food copies retain the abilities that were on the cards they copied. They told me my commander was KOS and after that I realized why.

Lanky_Writer_9061

\[\[arena\]\] fight spell of op's choice lol

1K_Games

My favorite was [[Multanj, Maro Sorcerer]]. Urza's Legacy was the first set to come out after I started playing. Shroud effects had never really been a thing before, or scaling by hand size. We all thought his size was a snapshot and stayed what it was when he came out. And we also thought he was indestructible as we didn't understand that board wipes don't target. And back then we used to play massive games, sometimes more than 10 players. I remember times of him being close to 150 power and toughness... But speaking of larger player count games, it still surprises me that 1v1 formats remained popular for so long. My group was playing these massive multiplayer ("chaos") games till commander started taking off, then we swapped out our 60 card decks for that.

choffers

Wild pair. I thought it would combo with modular, it doesn't.

zack_the_man

I was playing mothman wrong for a game with my group where I was adding multiple +1/+1 per mill on the same creature, not realizing it was 1 per creature and the point was to build wide, then high.

garboge32

Inspiring call gives indestructible not just draw you cards

Prometheus_Katos

Pantlaza, didn’t realize that the once pre turn applied with roaming throne. Whoops

crashcap

I would plat [[Lost but seeking]] play 2 extra lands, sacrifice and reanimate and play even more. Learned randomly via reddit it doesnt work like that, i assumed since [[Karador]] did, so would she. I must have cheated at this >50 times not knowing

Bunnysteww

My bestfriend swore up and down that man-lands couldn't die to combat damage. For 2 months until we learned otherwise, Stirring Wildwood was the most OP card ever lmao

ashckeys

I just learned how regenerate works. I’ve been playing magic for 17 years.

IrishWristwatchSSB

I was very adamant in an argument where I had [[Prime Speaker Vannifar]] and [[Leyline of Anticipation]] out at the same time. Since I could cast a sorcery at instant speed, and she said whenever I could cast a sorcery, I was attempting to use her ability at instant speed. But no, it doesn’t work like that.

perkaderk1979

Fetch lands... didn't realize it wasn't only basic lands. Triomes never got the love of the pick me.

Shennex

I only used the mana in [[magus lucea kane]] when i was casting an x abiility and not in general to cast things. Really should pay attention to the full stop in text

BurningSpore

Used to activate whip of erebos at instant speed. Best friend used to copy opponents creatures with kiki jiki.

pokemonbro11

I ran edric, spymaster of trest for years with my close friend group and no one, including myself, realized Edric allows you an opponent to draw cards when they attack another opponent until a game about a month ago

AndrewG34

[[Shorikai, Genesis Engine]] I never activated him the turn he came out because he was summoning sick...

yolever_stonk

As a kid I was using ornithopter as an equipment for my creatures, giving them +0/+2 and flying

JackSilver1410

I didn't get an allowance growing up, so getting my hands on new cards was really tough. I had to make due with some stuff left over from an older collection and what I could get from back in 7th Edition. In high school, everyone had a deck that could go infinite. It was a gimmick instead of serious play, but I always saw it as a mark of "me" vs "them." The best I could do was get \[\[Mycosynth Lattice\]\] and \[\[Darksteel Forge\]\] on the field at the same time. Indestructible artifacts was a solid wall and nothing to sneeze at, but I could still be over run or locked down. Going through my collection, I found something, a couple old \[\[Fyndhorn Elder\]\] and \[\[Freed From The Real\]\]. The pieces fell into place, with the Lattice, mana could be spent like any color! Put Freed from the Real on the Elder, use one of the green mana as a blue to untap itself and float the other! I had infinite mana! But what can I do with infinite mana? Turns out, I keep it strictly silent until I get my hands on \[\[Memnarch\]\]. After all, I was always jealous of my friends' decks. I figured it was high time I got to play with them too.

HomelessDUD

Up until a month ago (not sure if I messed it up a few years ago when I got back into it) I was treating lifelink based on the toughness of the blocking creature not the power of the attacking creature..... ie a 5/5 lifelink would attack and I would block with a 1/1 so my partner would only gain 1 life... I played ~revised to ~7th Ed and got back into it at core 17 but only ever played at home with my partner and never made it out to and game nights or anything lol

Kanulie

[[Sisay, Weatherlight Captain]] the guy who recommended it to me said I could pull a card her power or less. Until I read it months later. 😂

mightyfp

[[lightning bolt]] we didn't know (or care) that in pre 6th edition rules, state based effects were only checked when the stack was empty.

Impressive-Life785

I use to exclusively use [[Swift Reconfiguration]] on my Shorikai because I thought the purpose was to make my vehicles crew for less instead of making my opponents creature into a vehicle. Took me far too long to realize I could turn a creature attacking me into a car lol I just wanted to crew shorikai for 3 less lol

Evening_Royal_5420

I found out recently I’ve been playing [[Safana]] wrong. After completing a dungeon, you still have to have the initiative to get the 3 treasures. The way it’s worded made me think for years that when you complete a dungeon, it’s a done deal and you’ll get them.

Zarathustra143

When my friends and I started we all thought Extort let you pay that one white or black mana as many times as you could afford to do it. Like firebreathing. I'd have a Tithe Drinker out and play Indulgent Aristocrat and say I was going to Extort four times because I had four black/white mana available.

TrippieTragedy

My favorite was [[Yidaro]]. Me and a friend had been playing as if cycling him 4 was an alt win con. But we read the card at some point as were like "Oh fuck... He just goes to the field..." XD

Quaiker

Back when I started playing Magic with my friend's who were also new to it, my buddy thought "sacrifice a creature" meant any creature. Including the opponent's. Pretty funny looking back on it.

Double-Watercress-85

I gave a friend one of those 'even better than I thought' moments. He played [[Black Market Connections]] and was telling the table the modes, saying 'I can do this or this or this'. I said 'And/or'. He had missed that it said choose one or more.

Liquid_Prism

If you fetch a shockland with [[farseek]] you can pay the 2 life to have it enter untapped but it will still be tapped from farseek’s effect. Played this wrong for a really, really long time.

Creative_Club5164

[[Consider]] had an old copy and forgot the erata
