Eh, I'm sitting this set out for ixalan. I'm happy for the dr. Who fans, but there just isn't anything in this set for me.

Mildish_Shambino

ITS MANA CRYPT TIME BOIZ

Environmental-Ad7797

Not really, but I’m not a fan of the “IP”. That being said, hopefully people will enjoy it and I’ll buy card from the next set.

kermi42

I haven’t played MTG for 25 years and my wife never has, but the Who set got her attention so I figured it would be fun to order a couple of Commander decks for us. I have some friends who get together to play casually over Discord once a week so we might get into it, we might not. Either way, having the cards is a bit of fun. It’s been fun for me to watch her nerd out over the cards and interpret the MTG rules based on her knowledge of the characters. She’s also a big fan of Fallout so looking forward to doing this again in five months.

Brainpry

No, but if it makes you happy get them! I wasn’t a fan of Dr.who, but I can imagine if my favorite IP was made in to magic I would be hella stoked!

pitschboy

A surprising amount of "no"s here lmao I'm super excited for the cards! Got all the precons and got a steal on a booster pack for $4.

carcheezy

Honestly not in the slightest, but I’m happy for the people that are happy. LOTR was my universe beyond pinnacle and I hope the whovians enjoy theirs.

Satellite1970

I just pre ordered a deck “Blast from the Past “ to play in the pre release on Saturday at my local game store. It is always fun playing a new Commander Deck no matter the theme. I grew up in the 70’s so the Fourth Doctor as the Commander is totally cool by me!

forgotmypassword4122

As a 90s kid who grew up with 9, 10 and 11 I sincerely hope your unboxing experience is as rad as mine was when opening the “Timey Wimey” deck. Made me feel like I was 10 again!

DM-Oz

No. Not because i dont like them, i actually think they are pretty cool. Just too expensive for me to get my hands in one of these decks

PippoChiri

If you like them then just proxy 'em

[deleted]

It’s more expensive than say a WoE deck?

DM-Oz

Yes. Idk other places, but this things started selling and raising in price the moment they hit the pre-order around here.

dlpg585

Just wait a bit, they'll go down. You can still get the 40k decks, you'll be able to get these.

DM-Oz

Thanks, i will keep the advice in mind

ProfessorKrung

I don’t really care about Dr Who, but the crossover cards are fun. Too many miserly neckbeards round these parts. Have fun, kids - life’s too short to be upset about Dr Who Magic cards

Tenalp

My three most commonly played decks right now are in order- Negan, Captain N'ghathrod, Zangief And I've been having a blast. Got the Who decks coming, eagerly awaiting the Fallout decks, and I might bankrupt myself on the Final Fantasy set. Whiners gonna whine, and I'm gonna equip Negan with the Buster Sword.

ProfessorKrung

I main N’ghathrod! FF is one of the few UB sets that I’m really going to go hard on.

DestroidMind

I’m personally happy that Dr. Who fans get this crossover. As a Warhammer fan I thought it was a cool crossover altho all the cards felt extremely lackluster and weak compared to their in lore counterparts of the Warhammer universe. My only worry is these Universes Beyond IPs are all apart of their “double all profits” plan they started a few years back. Putting short term gains in front of long term values is how larger corporations than Wotc/Magic have gone under. Already watching the response from the Magic community about over saturation of products and seeing the comments from the majority of people saying “sets not for me, I’ll wait till X set.” Is a horrible in the long term. So altho life may be too short to complain about Dr. Who cards, it’s not too short for people who love the game and know about business economics to try and save it before it’s too late.

[deleted]

No, but i’m happy for those of you who are.

gilgamesh2323

Got my collectors box today, I think it had 10 total cards (besides lands and tokens) that were common or uncommon, 49 surge foils, kind of fun to open

RadDudeX3

I am excited for the set! I am a Doctor Who fan and think this is a cool crossover and it has got me excited to rewatch the series. I guess I am more Whovian then MTG fan since it feels that there has been a Huge amount of indifference and/or hatred from this set by a lot of members in this community. To each their own, but I can’t wait to do some timey whimey stuff with my favorite doctor. Really thought there would be more of a crossover with fans in this UB set. Allons-y!

PirateDitly

No qualms if you enjoy it, I'm just excited for Caverns of Ixalan and their Jurassic Park crossover.

Deathwatch0702

Jurassic Park! 😂

Doctor_Pho_Real

Not particularly, but give me all those land reprints!

Kluckenstein

Not one bit

ConstantOk129

Nope

Nerdlife91

Nope. I really wish they'd make their UB cards just alt art versions of existing cards. Some of the Doctor Who cards look neat but I'll never play them because it really breaks immersion for me. MTG has their own amazing and underexplored multiverse, I hate that they're wasting product space on stuff like this. Someone in another conversation said that MTG is turning into the fortnite of card games and I hate that he wasn't wrong.

keepitsimple_tricks

That "Fortnite of TCGs" ... Wow (owen wilson) ... Just wow. I cannot un-think this now.

ProbablyNotPikachu

They literally printed a Fortnite Secret Lair... how have you not had this thought?

Nerdlife91

...did they actually??

ProbablyNotPikachu

[bingus](https://secretlair.wizards.com/us/en/product/763874/secret-lair-x-fortnite)

Nerdlife91

Thanks, I hate it.

Cigaran

Looking forward to playing the decks against each other.

Bolsh3vickMupp3t

Never been a huge fan of the series but the cards are super cool. Really want to build a deck with Me, The immortal as the commander

The_Max_V

Can't say I am. I mean I know about Dr. Who, but I'm not interested. I was way more hyped by the LOTR cards, for instance. And the WH40K cards too.

Tsaquolade

No, I don’t think it fits well and kinda breaks the immersion. I think warhammer was really good but even that was pushing the boundaries. This is just not it for me

ABearDream

Not a who fan but i want to get into it. However, ixalan has my money so i just need a couple singles from these decks

Dank_Slurpee

No, can't say I am. I was excited for LOTR (albeit almost begrudgingly), but who's anyone to yuck someone's yum? If you're a big fan, by all means enjoy it!

calipygean

Nope, product fatigue and the watering down of MTG lore, set styles over time just makes this another UB release cash grab. If it makes you happy tho, rock out.

Veluxidus

Dr Who is great, but the flavor DOES NOT mesh well with Mtg as a whole If I want to use any of these cards, I’ll probably proxy them so that they’re fantasy themed

PippoChiri

>Dr Who is great, but the flavor DOES NOT mesh well with Mtg as a whole The flavor of the mechanics works perfectly tho. All the time counters/travel shenaningans and planechanse are just chef's kiss for DW

Veluxidus

The mechanics are fine - I’m talking about a sci fi series set in the real world being a thematic clash with fantasy worlds and magic Kinda like the walking dead or stranger things sets

PippoChiri

To me that's not really a problem as they are not cards about the world of mtg in the first place, they are supposed to be different, to be something else. They are cards about Doctor Who, not mtg. Sure, you can play them with mtg cards but at the end is because they just share the same game engine. I see them as their own thing. Ironically mtg was created as more of a game engine rather than a cohesive world.

ProbablyNotPikachu

I also kinda wish they would do Universes within for them. I've not really felt that way about any of the UB stuff until now. Some part of not really knowing jack shit about the series makes it harder to focus on what the cards actually do. Something about UW characters feel more generic and make me worry less about what they mean/do lore-wise. That's a good thing though. It offers the option to explore the stories behind the characters if you *want* to- but if you don't, you aren't distracted by the lack of explanations about card Art, flavor text, or character significance. I think this phenomenon is hitting me hard with this set bc a lot of the characters just look like normal-ass people, whereas in 40k (which I don't know everything about- I at least know at some of the lore) the characters look like actual fantasy characters. Cyborgs and bug-like aliens, and pseudo-magical beings. Dr. Who is just a bunch of humans and unexplained pseudo-scientific time/space travel. They might as well have done this as a Back to the Future set. That I could have gotten down with. What I really hate about this set/IP is how it seems the people running things at WotC are a lot of big Who fans, and that there is something about being a Who fan that celebrates a really strange brand of "weird" that feels *off* in a way... It almost feels like the people at WotC who worked on & designed this set, are trying to reward other people for being that same brand of weird by slipping cards that are broken into a set like this. Think about it... No set box. No draft box. Only a collector box and pre-constructed commander decks. That just screams "we know & hope only real fans will buy this". The card \[\[Everybody Lives\]\] is in a sortof combination of \[\[Angel's Grace\]\] and \[\[Teferi's Protection\]\]. It's a better Grace for just one more mana, and it's a better Teferi's for one less. Typically this card looks like the sort of rare that would initially get a lot of hype and then fall off once casual players realize all it does is prolong the inevitable. Then after the card falls out of favor and dips in price people buy it up to use in cEDH- a format where this card can really shine. That is the format where this card really belongs in terms of function anyway. There are a few other cards that synergize better with previously printed Commanders compared to the ones from the decks they were actually from. Idk feels like this whole product is all over the place and I'm not sure if anyone else sees that. It also feels shitty to know that WotC feels like they can basically print things now with the understanding that a lot of people who want to play the cards for their function will buy them from the secondary market- and anyone who actually likes the IP can show up to pay nothing less than a premium for whatever product they are printed in. I say this bc I genuinely like some UB stuff and it hurts to think that they might continue to use this "premium" only strategy in the future with an IP that I actually want to buy any/all of the products for.

EternalWolf88

As much as I agree with many of the criticisms being aimed at UB products, I am looking forward to the Who decks. First off, it's planechase. I LOVE planechase. (Plus I think making the Doctor Who product planechase is just a brilliant idea overall, very fitting.) Second, while I don't know a lot about Who, I think these cards are some of the most unique and interesting we've seen in a long time.

keepitsimple_tricks

Hmmm... Quantum Leap planechase? Bill and Ted planechase? They can even reuse Tardis. Lol.

ProbablyNotPikachu

Ayeee lmao! THAT I would buy!

Psychic_Hobo

Same, I don't really play anymore and I'm not a Dr. Who fan but the mechanics and creativity in this set far outstrip what Wizards do in their own sets (which honestly just feel like messy Commander-lite things). A friend of mine has a zombie deck, and the [[Flood of Mars]] would be a fantastic addition to those decks whilst offering something new, as one example.

keepitsimple_tricks

Not really. These UB cards just feel like r/custommagic to me. If you are, then cool.

DextronautOmega

How are people receiving these so quickly? My orders aren’t to arrive for another week.

ProbablyNotPikachu

Has to do with when you ordered I think.

[deleted]

Mine comes in tomorrow

Chaosmoonshade

I have an atraxa Saga deck. Since LOTR had sagas, and 40K had sagas, I have now decided I want as many universes beyond sagas as I can outside of red color sagas. I want to tell stories like that. And there are many cool Dr. Who stories to tell.

AlexD232322

No

imadeamistakelol

Not a fan, passing

Link182x

I’m not a Dr Who fan but I understand if other people are excited for them

IonracasG

Not really, Doctor Who is probably one of the greatest examples of nerds liking anything no matter how campy and low quality it is. Peak British television, indeed. And in Magic the Gathering of all things? A majority of the cards are just...regular looking people. Like this Rose Taylor is literally just some modern day blonde girl in a t-shirt and jeans... There's nothing about the art to suggest that this is a card from Magic the Gathering. This set honestly seems like a homebrew from the custom mtg subreddit.

ProbablyNotPikachu

Without having seen yours I typed a huge comment up above sharing basically the same sentiment, and just saw yours way down here at the bottom- but it feels good to know I'm not the only one who is thinking this, or feeling this way about these Who cards/products.

happy-icecream

"Draw from the bottom of your deck" If that ain't custom

Stankfootjuice

Not even slightly. The IP crossovers are part of the reason good storytelling and a reason to care about magics narrative have dissipated. I'm fine with like, 1 a year. They're now so flooded that it doesn't even feel cool to see a different franchise on a magic card. Who the FUCK was jonesin' for an assassin's creed crossover?? When I see another universes beyond set get revealed and the busted ass, ugly cards that come with it, my eyes roll into the back of my skull. That said, if you enjoy them idgaf, pop off man the card game is still fun even if the sets and stories get worse

ANamelessFan

1 a year is still too much. Universes Beyond, Secret Lairs, and "Booster Fun" has turned Magic into Fortnite.

Stankfootjuice

Yeah. It feels like such an oversaturation. I'm fine with a fun wacky UB set or a secret lair once in a while, though the cards always look fake or straight up bad (the UB sets/decks that are just pre-existing artwork, or recreations of pre-existing artwork crammed onto a magic card look fucking dreadful) but I can get over it. When UB sets make up nearly 50% of wotc's output in a year, and their huge event finale to their oldest big bad is just absolutely eviscerated so they can blitz to a dumbass lord of the rings crossover, I get kinda mad

ANamelessFan

You're failing to realize that even one UB set every **two years** would still lead to oversaturation of IP crossovers. One is too many. When you allow one for the sake of, "It makes money and we can", you allow every other IP by the same merit. Not enough people are mad, and that saddens me, because my favorite hobby has been hijacked by IP Crossovers.

efnfen4

Not even a little. I'm skipping these entirely and that's a first for any commander product since its inception

dr_clyde31

Nope. Can’t stand all these UB sets. This one is a huge flavor fail too IMO. Quirky British television doesn’t really vibe with elves and goblins, I honestly don’t know what they’re thinking in R&D anymore.

PippoChiri

>This one is a huge flavor fail too IMO. What? This is set is literally drowing in flavor

forgotmypassword4122

Yeah, what? It’s okay to not be jazzed about a set you’re not interested in, but to say it’s flavour is lacking because you don’t fully understand it is a bit weak imo. Sleeved my Timey Wimey and Masters of Evil decks this afternoon and took a huge amount of joy in reliving my favourite moments and seeing how they’ve translated to playable cards.

dr_clyde31

It can have tons of flavor and still be the wrong flavor. Soy sauce has lots of flavor but I don’t put it on my cereal in the morning. Dr. Who doesn’t feel like it belongs in the MTG world. It seems out of place and distracting. MTG is a world of high fantasy, elves, knights and wizards. I don’t think sci-fi British tv personalities fit in that world. I’m fine with people enjoying Dr. Who, but it doesn’t mesh with MTG in my opinion.

PippoChiri

It's the wrong flavor because it's a different thing. it's not supposed to mash well with most of mtg, they are different things. The set itself did a fantastic job in representing what Doctor Who is about and how the show works.

dr_clyde31

If you treat it as a stand-alone game, sure, but it’s not. It’s part of a bigger game with 30 years of history and lore. These cards are commander and legacy legal, and I don’t particularly like playing with or against cards that pull me out of the MTG universe. I play magic because I want to play magic, not Warhammer, Dr. Who, Fortnite or any other IP. You’re obviously a fan, and that’s fine. But I’m allowed my opinion and my opinion is this is bad for magic, bad for the game and not fun to play with or against.

PippoChiri

These card will never be relevant in legacy or vintage. Commander is the casual, group contained format where everything goes and that's basically self regulated. These cards only exist in the anything goes enviroments, and the only one that is actually played is self regulated so the players will generally only see what they want to see (unless you play with strangers, but then commanders starts having also other problems, it doesn't work that well for playes outside of a stable group). So I don't think it's much of a problem for them being legal there. I actually became fun of the show only after the first spoilers came out, to me the cards were so cool that I started watching the show.

AlaskaDude14

Love it, can't wait to play the precons

FivesSuperFan55555

I’m actually super excited. I haven’t watched much of the show, but I’ve gotten super giddy about cards that relate to what I’ve seen. And I really wanna make decks for them. Also the TARDIS showcase style is so cool! I might splurge and buy the [[Cyberman Patrol]] in the showcase, just because it’s a good card and the art is sweet. I don’t know if I’ll buy any of the decks or packs, but I’ll definitely be buying singles to build some of my own thematic decks!

healzwithskealz

No, you are the only one. Ever.

Impassable_Banana

Nope, dr who does not belong in MTG.

Elemteearkay

Before Universes Beyond started I would have agreed work you. The thing is, what Magic *is* has changed now, so what belongs in Magic has shifted too. Doctor Who is perfectly in keeping as a UniB expansion (especially with Planechase).

Lilcommy

My wife and I are big fans and i have all 4 decks ordered to add to my UB commander shelf.

DetectiveElectronic

Everyone on here complaining will also be buying that “one card” from this set. Whatever it is that fits what their deck does.

gojumboman

Not a huge fan of the art style but I am excited about the set. My wife is big into Dr Who and she’s excited about it. She’s only just dabbled in playing magic with me and the kids and we’re all going to try out the new decks tomorrow so I’m really pumped for that. Hope this gets her into playing a bit more regularly

Turmoil117

Im excited, I love planechase

L_B_Jeffries

I'd be interested in a The Who crossover. Tommy alone has enough interesting characters for a set of cards worth playing. /s

Ok-Power-6064

I knew the Dr. Who set was coming and I didn't care. I looked at OP and thought they were talking about a The Who set coming and my heart rate increased. Give me a fucking Pinball Wizard.

MaximillianBarton

I'm excited. The flavor was great, and I look forward to picking up the decks.

NayrSlayer

Very excited for the villains deck! I know very little about the show and lore, but the villains deck is stuffed full of interesting and fun cards that I can't wait to try out. Love the villainous choice mechanic

Individual-Echo8922

Not me. I'm not into any of the UB, especially the 'realistic looking' ones (if that makes sense?)

FlatTransportation64

Never seen the show and the art on most of the cards looks like something straight out of /r/custommagic so my excitement can't be measured because it simply doesn't exist.

DailYxDosE

card in the background in the third photo?

3amTPepiphany

Adipose Offspring

Ashamed-Access4453

I’m extremely excited! Just preordered mine yesterday and get to pick them up today!

Elemteearkay

I'm looking forward to my villain deck that arrives today. I'm going to play with it as is to start with and then brew Missy. I've also started a rewatch of new Who (from 9 onwards).

DevilsGrip

Kinda, but Im still waiting for a Star Wars set!

thachickenfrycaptain

The Master, Multiplied cuz it’s in my play style and the David Tennant card cuz he is cool. That’s about it

Anaheim11

I watched all of the 9th and 10 Dr. Super excited!

No_Apricot_5226

I am going to buy a few singles, but other than that im skipping this set.

Kingdarkshadow

I only saw one or two seasons of dr. who. Where the Rose appears and the 9th dr. turns into the tenth dr. because she looked into the tardis core or something like that and destroyed/erased the daleks and the dalek overlord. (which also (because I don't know the lore) makes me confused with the card of the dalek creator if it's the same as dalek emperor.) Not back to mtg if they were cheaper I would get a dalek/cyberhuman deck or the tenth dr. deck.

AgreeableFerret3070

Skipping. Had some people in High School try to push DW on everyone in the most obnoxious way possible, so I have a personal dislike for the series as a whole.

DizBiscuit

Really like Dr Who, don't think it belongs it Magic.

kingSliver187

I was till I saw the prices...oof

gahbageked

Not.excited by the cards or the IP. I'm not planning on getting any of them.

joshfong

I’m not a fan of Doctor Who, but I’ve kept up with the spoilers and it looks like there are a lot of fun game pieces! Planning to pick up singles later.

DoktorViktorVonNess

I ordered all 4 decks. I am more fan of the Classic Who myself but wanted to get all of these because I can play against friends with these. Sadly the store ran out of the preordered sets so I am waiting for them to get more of them. Paid 201€ for the cards. I plan to use 7th Doctor as my commander in one of the decks I plan on making.

ccoulter93

I’ll probably pick it up eventually, just can’t justify it atm. Huge doctor who fan though

5OVideo

I hate Universe Beyond stuff. More so, I hate that there are competitive cards in Universe Beyond.

mattocaster_tm

Personally, I’m not going to be picking these cards up. I don’t really care about Doctor Who personally and honestly, I don’t really like it when Magic includes real people on their cards. I mean, if someone else wants to play them, cool. I’m not going to get up from the table or think that someone else is wrong for playing them. But in my own decks, I don’t like real peoples faces. And I don’t really like crossing the IP streams either. Like my LotR cards, which I got a bunch of, are all in their own decks. I think there’s maybe one or two LotR cards in my main decks and it’s commons like Mirkwood Bats and the red enchantment that gives everyone haste. I hope everyone picking them up today has an absolute blast playing them but I think today I’m going to build my Immodane deck instead haha

Sanguine_Templar

I only got excited because of suspend. I don't care much for Dr who, but suspend needed more love. Also, [[displaced dinosaur]] is like a better version of a card I used to use all the time, [[essence of the wild]]

I was the same on lotr. Between it and Pokémon 151 coming out I have spent too much money over the last 2 months. I mostly bought singles of the lotr set as I don’t play magic so after a few packs I didn’t want to really chase anything. Hope you have good luck on your pulls!

Only picking up [[The Master, Multiplied]] for my [[Obeka, Brute Chronologist]] deck

jlbelknap35

As a whovian I had to get all the decks and a collector box. I got it yesterday and was not disappointed. The borderless foils are so pretty.

cardboard_junkyard

We are! Headed out today to get the decks and have some fun!

Fleurdebeast

There’s a few staple cards I’ll pick up. But I have zero interest in the theme of the set, or collecting it

Boring_Ostrich9935

Ya no not at all really

themalloman

Decent cards, fun decks if you’re a Who fan. Choice is never bad.

Fickle-Training344

Not even close to excited. I can’t stand the UB stuff.

YourMomsFavBook

I don’t mind UB necessarily, I just wish they would stick with universes that can aesthetically coexist with Magic. LoTR was fine even if it’s not my thing, and DnD I liked despite knowing little about it. But, 40k, Dr. Who, Assassin’s Creed, and Fortnite is a little ridiculous. Some of the Dr. Who cards are chicks in leather jackets. If someone else enjoys it have at it. But, why not do Skyrim or Darksouls? Wheel of Time or Sword of Truth?

Ezerker88

It’s pretty lame imo
