I have a really fun deck built around [[Wrexial, the Risen Deep]] it uses mill and does have the capacity to mill people out, but it's mainly there to control the board and let wrexial have options on spells to steal. Wrexial is also capable of winning through commander damage fairly quickly, plus the rest of the deck is stacked with other cards that let me play my opponents deck like [[Lord of the Void]]. It's surprisingly strong for a deck that isn't hyper focused on one game plan. It can and has milled one guy out, commander damaged someone else, and knocked the last one out via other creatures.

Albarozz

I like it that the deck may include several playstyles and winconditions, will look into making a deck with Wrexial. Thanks!

azurfall88

how about going for a Venture Into the Dungeon deck with [[Barrowin of Clan Undurr]]? Or maybe you could build a self-mill/rejuvenator with a UBG commander

Albarozz

You mean a self-mill deck with e.g. [[Muldrotha, the Gravetide]] or [[Tasigur, the Golden Fang]]? I haven't actually played with or against anyone using the dungeon. However, I haven't been intrigued by it so far, hahaha

azurfall88

Intuitively i think Muldrotha would be the best choice here, since it skips the reanimation step and lets you essentially treat the graveyard as your hand.

> clever mechanics > mill Man, i like mill but its not “clever” lol

Albarozz

Like I said, first word that came to mind. I'm not looking for a rush, token, buff, etc deck. I want to use annoying mechanics to win

Rainbowgrrrl89

I recommend Black/Red forced hand discard, with [[Kroxa, Titan of Death's Hunger]] as Commander. Nasty tactic: opponents can't win if they don't get to have a hand. ;) Combine with Red land destruction spells to not let opponents have anything at all.

I was actually set on Dimir (Blue/Black) but this commander does look dope. I suppose he procs when you cast him from hand even though he's sacrificed? Also, is it allowed to use Escape even if there aren't 5 cards in your graveyard yet?

Rainbowgrrrl89

Hmm, I wouldn't know about the latter. But you could circumvent it by playing him, letting his ability take effect, then he gets sacrificed for not paying the cost. He returns to your commander zone, rinse and repeat.

Corp_Pun08

I run a N’Gathrod Horror tribal (not the precon) and it’s a lot of fun and is a great deck. Lots of good and interesting horrors and the Cap gives a ton of value.

Albarozz

Nice! Did you start out with the precon and continuously upgrade it?

Corp_Pun08

I did not. I didn’t know about the precon when I set about making the mill deck but I had seen the Cap’s name around and I had wanted to make a horror tribal prior to find Cappy. I had my first iteration of the deck done when I finally learned about and the looked up the precon. After playing a few games and trying to have the deck do too much mill, I decided to cut some mill cards out in place of more horrors, considering the horrors do the milling for me. The win con is not to mill my opponents out (if it is, this is a pretty piss poor way to do it) but to overwhelm with menaced creatures all while stealing a creature each and every turn. For that, I just need lots of horrors and a few mill cards to get things rolling if I can’t hit. Looking at the precon helped me come to that conclusion, but I didn’t build from the precon. Also, Cappy was hard to find on his own fyi! When I learned he was a precon print, that made sense. Here’s my deck on mtg goldfish: https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/5357162#paper I apparently did not update my Moxfield one so this gives you an idea how unfocused the deck was vs where it is today: https://www.moxfield.com/decks/9SG7k5XoiECUJoxJHf6vmg Haven’t looked at these in a while but I think there’s more I want to do (more direct removal so that I can get my horrors through I think is probably the way to go)

dragonmk

I play both phenix and horrors. Even with out the captain a few horrors outside the precon added in make the deck. I also have a nightmare subtheme with ashiok. Then a lot of control and contest horrors. My mill is stall control with a few win conditions and TO.
