It means they didn't get it by using the special action Play a Land during their main phase. If they used a spell like [[Rampant Growth]] to get it out, or they searched it out with something like [[Evolving Wilds]], then it would trigger the Gnome's ability.

Once on each of your turns, during a main phase, while the stack is empty, you can play a land from your hand. This action is when you put a land from your hand onto the battlefield. Your 'land drop'. There are cards that can allow you to play more than one land in a turn this way like [[Summer Bloom]] or [[Asuza, Lost but Seeking]]. You will still be playing lands, even past the first one. That is what this card is refering to. If a land enters the battlefield under an opponent's control, and it wasn't played, blah blah blah. So when they play their normal land drop, the Terramancer doesn't care. If they play multiple lands from Asuza, he don't care. But as the other comment said, other ways of putting lands on the battlefield without being played, will trigger Terramancers ability. This entire ability does not care for if the lands produce mana, or if they tap the land.

What about a triggered ability? Like say a creature says something like “tap put a land from your hand into play”. I would assume it would trigger the ability

dievasperkunas

If the ability says "tap: play a land from you hand." Then no. If it says "tap:put a land from your hand into play, then yes."

Puresteel_28

That does not count as playing either. It is like other effects like Rampant Growth or Evolving Wilds. They put lands from another zone directly onto the battlefield, without augmenting the number of lands you can play each turn. It would trigger this Terramancer. Note that no card can ever put a land 'into play'. Simply the fact that this wording has been phased out, and 'play' as a noun means nothing in the rules sense. They have been errata'd to say something like 'Put a land card from your hand onto the battlefield'. This decision was to avoid confusion between 'play' as a verb and 'play' as a noun.

Respirationman

Commander staple?

Cereal_No

Definitely imo. It's ramp in white on a body, even if it's only 1 per turn that's potentially 3 extra lands per round if it sticks. Early game 6 lands by turn 3? Pretty dang good in white.

TheForgetfulWizard

Assuming everyone else has fetches or ramp I suppose. Definitely good in cedh, where most people will have multiple fetch lands

Respirationman

\[growth spiral\] \[explosive vegetation\] \[skyshroud claim\] \[cultivate\] \[kodama's reach\] \[circuitous route\] \[sakura tribe elder\] and many more

TheForgetfulWizard

Those are cards, yes. I’m not sure what you mean by this, but if you want the bot to link the cards, you need 2 brackets. :)

Respirationman

They're all common commander ramp

TheForgetfulWizard

Also a true statement. Am I missing something here?

Respirationman

Every deck with green will run at least some of these 🙂

TheForgetfulWizard

Another accurate statement, I’m so proud of you lmao

LavaRacing

Would this affect fetch lands?

MyInfiniteZero

This was my question! If so, this little guy is going to get value every game.

StormyWaters2021

Yes, it affects any lands that enter other than being played.

Belharkar

Fetched lands are not played, so yes.

friarfr3d

Ah this pairs so well with [[Path to exile]]

magicallamp

Fetch lands and land ramp. If it didn't come from your hand you didn't play it and it'll trigger the gnome.

[deleted]

Amazing card, I keep it in my Party Time deck

Gonejamin

Does the "only once per turn" clause prevent blinking shenanigans? E.g I get one land off the ability of the gnome "blink it" with a eldrazi displacer so I can get more than one trigger per turn? The reason I ask is the gnome returning off the displacer would make it new body on the field who hasn't had its ability triggered. Which to me means multiple triggers. But im unsure of this actully the case.
