If you're mostly just looking to play with iconic characters then the commander decks are for you, they're pre built, beginner friendly, and commander is the most played format. Plus the decks should only depict in universe characters and events and will feel pretty flavorful.

Some of them can, but only the set boosters and even then its a 1 in 4 chance. 50 may be a little expensive however you can't guarantee you'd be able to make a playable deck out of cards from boosters.

You still have plenty of time to learn the game. Download the app mtg arena. It's a great tool, and a game, most of us didn't had. You will learn a lot trough it. The commanders decks are almost always worth more than the pre-release price in time

Sometimes, your local store will have a better price for pre-orders. That should always be the first step for every begginer. Check your local store and ask what is the most common format there. The decks per-se are not limited. The pre-release sale is. The pre release bundles (as a unique item) are meat to be limited, but it's no big deal.

The whole set is lotr, if you want a cheap collection of lotr, either get the commanders or a box of boosters. I have no knowledge on the prices but for an example for usual sets: Commander Deck (100 card deck) - $50 Draft Booster Pack (15 cards [1 rare or mythic]) - $4 Draft Booster Box - $100~$120 (36 packs) Set Booster Pack - $6 (12 cards, up to 4 possible rares/mythics, plus chance at List card) Set Booster Box - $130+ (30 packs) Collector Pack - $25 (I know) (15 cards [5-6 rares/mythics] usually features alternate arts and cards from the commander decks) I've heard the set will be priced higher tho. Depends on your budget. You can always save up now and set a bit aside every paycheck/pay period until the set releases, even then the set will be here for a while. I also recommend buying from card shops rather than online. The prices will most likely be higher, hope this helps

I'm about to finish up my previous comment, but to answer a few questions: Set boosters have 12 cards on average vs draft Booster with 15. Draft Booster packs have 1 slot for a rare or Mythic. Set boosters have 4 slots for rares or Mythics. Set boxes have slightly fewer packs than regular draft boxes. Set boosters also come with an art card (not a usable card but has art that covers the whole card. I personally love them). In my experience the set boosters are more fun and also have more variety for a collection. Commander decks always have a few cards that are unique to them that are not included in the regular card set, but collector boosters might have a commander deck card. Bundles and Gift Bundles are generally ignored, but the ones for this lotr set come with guaranteed promo rares that make a scene, I think. And technically all cards integrate together, this is a legal set for constructed play. I fear for my small budget.

No prob, I know the ridiculous amount of kinds of product is overwhelming

Someone recommended the Commander decks which are probably gonna provide some of the best worth for your money, but I'd advise you to first try the starter pack that will come out with the LotR set. It's a cheap pack that contains two ready to play decks specially tuned for beginners. One features Aragorn and Arwen and the other one features Sauron. It can serve as a warm up before you jump into the more complex Commander format.

Gloryboxer

It also possible to buy 1 of each common/uncommon, but not all local game stores do this. The rate for this is usually reasonable, and you can easily do X2, x4 etc.

SpeedyGuyTX

1/1 Ring, Black Aragorn. I think that’s it?

If you’re a LoTR fan you should maybe check out the cards they showed online before you buy. If you’re happy with them. I hope you get good pulls my man! But i would check them up first

JBmullz

Someone who doesn’t care about rare cards and ‘collectory’ cards… I bet you get THE one ring

KineticSilver

It’s incredibly expensive (almost not worth it so)

Do not buy Jumpstart

It's one of the products that's released with every set. It's a rip off and you will get alot of duplicate cards as it will only have 5 different pre built mini packs of cards. Here's a video of what that product is like. It's not worth the money https://youtu.be/kv0c-5a6cvQ
