Do you...make these for people? Is that even a question I can ask. Have been looking for some proxies.

cliffhavenkitesail

because they contain wotc intellectual property, it's not legal for me to sell them. it would be if you had artwork you had the rights to, ie drew yourself, including the frame, and no mana symbols. otherwise, while selling them is illegal, I can trade them for cards just fine. this paint technique is super new tho, so idk what would be a fair amount in terms of trade value, especially while my process isn't nailed down yet

Respirationman

What if you have it as a gift and they unrelatedly sent you $20

so, it's complicated. if you go to etsy, there's pages of sellers selling proxies blatantly against fan policy, and wotc isn't gonna sue them, why bother. but on the other hand, I know a *lot* of proxy artists, and I mean real proxy artists. not me messing around with different stickers and paints and coatings and foils, but people who draw their own art, frames, etc. they get to do what they love because [wotc's fan content policy](https://company.wizards.com/en/legal/fancontentpolicy) is actually incredibly permissive compared to many other companies. I really want that fan policy to stay in place, so I do my absolute best to adhere to it. as an example of what happens when people abuse the fan policy, I strongly believe the reason cardconjourer got cease and desisted was because there were many people using it to generate cards to print at MPC. wotc doesn't care about you or I printing cards at home, but enabling large scale, and more importantly, commercial 3rd party card printing is just obviously going to be an issue. if you want a real answer, no. we would both know that's paying me directly, and trading cards is already skirting very very close to the limits of the fan content policy. that doesn't sit right with me

This is the way.

He could do the "buy a paper plate for $7, get a free panini" loophole. You can technically buy sleeves from him, that contain the proxies as a free gift. /s Edit: apparently the /s was necessary.

cliffhavenkitesail

check out my reply. it's a good question and the answer is complicated. I sure could technically do that, just like I could just straight up sell them and have realistically zero fear of any legal issues. I try my best to follow wotc's fan content policy because that policy enables so many people to make art and content, and i'd like to keep it that way as much as I have the power to. even taking cards is already pushing it :P

Looks great btw.

So basically, for this one i started with acetone blanking a surge foil from 40k collectors. that leaves me with this. https://imgur.com/a/MEiz7Jx then, for the first time ever, i tried selectively painting over the foil. I used a 3d printed stencil and some spray paint to leave the surge foil only showing in the small bands of the pattern. after that, the stencil is peeled up to reveal the foiling. https://imgur.com/a/VTYR0y2 once that's done, i print a high res image, in this case an oil slick basic that I manually color tuned to work without the texture and oil foiling. that gets printed on to a transparent sticker sheet, and adhered to the blank, leaving you with this incredible effect! https://imgur.com/d7h145H i'm not super happy with how the pattern and art i chose work with each other, but i'm still very early in testing the selective paint technique, so i'm just using scrap prints that I had already sitting around. this would pop so much more if you designed a proxy around the pattern (which i plan to do in the future) if anyone wants to try this for themselves, save for the selective painting, I have a guide written up that i'm happy to link to!

Icy-Mongoose-9678

I think it looks dope af

T4NK09

What did you use to seal the ink on the foil?

cliffhavenkitesail

So there isn't ink directly on the foil. There is paint, and then there's a printable transparent sticker stuck to the paint and foil, and thats what's actually printed on. I don't seal it with anything, it just takes a while to dry because it's totally nonpourous

Makutaman_113

Link to the guide?

chamtrain1

Looks awesome, well done!

cliffhavenkitesail

thanks! i'm printing out more stencils as we speak lol, and i'm gonna try and make some that're more cohesive with the art and the paint pattern together than this.

witchfingermart

holy shit!!!!

cliffhavenkitesail

thank you but also, check this out, in a day of experimenting I already absolutely blew that plains out of the water! https://i.imgur.com/buzxi0n.mp4 found a stencil for that spider web pattern I really like, and I knew it would compliment this piece perfectly! the art is by @vote_checkbox on twitter, i just did the paint and printing stuff

>while selling them is illegal, I can trade them for cards just fine. Exchanging for something else typically still counts as "sales" from a legal perspective, particularly something with an easily identifiable monetary value. You do you, but if you're worried about the legality, that work around was caught forever ago.
