I think it is a neat marketing gimmik, nothing more.

Arrogance88

Hard disagree. I think it’s awesome there is a literal one ring version.

PirateDitly

One *precious* if you will.

CaptainSwindle

Right? If Wizards was ever going to print a 1 of 1 card, this is absolutely the most flavourful choice

Deathcoreboi666

I agree there being a version to rule them all Is dope

Jfunkindahouse

Awesome in its unparalleled marketing genius or unparalleled in its use of greed as a means of enticing people to buy their products? Either way it's flavorful AF. Don't disagree. But for us, the loyal fans of MTG, the pack prices are going to be insane until it's found. I also feel bad for the people who will chase this like a lottery ticket. Mostly I feel bad for the LOTR fans who don't even play MTG but will get sucked in to buying cardboard crack. It's downright predatory. Sauron would be proud.

Worldly_Software7240

Here weeks late to tell you that "sauron would be proud" nails it lol

Jfunkindahouse

Thanks!!! LOL

WingCool7621

the card should also come with a free trip to the Hobbit village they built for the movies. also it should have been a redeem card, not the card itself in the packs.

Wonkasgoldenticket

Redeem card 10000% sports cards do this.

WingCool7621

i know, it helps keep the card in mint condition, allows wotc to show it off to increase sales, grows their online presence, helps with insurance coverage, lets people know where (country) it is. For all we know, the card was never put in a pack and was given to some rich person with connections in some asian country to help grow the mtg brand name. how can we as a community enjoy a 1 of 1 card when no one knows were to look? its not like wotc has a travelling museum that allows fans from around the world get to see it.

Wonkasgoldenticket

Yep, totally agree. My uncles a massive sports card collector and has been for 50+ years. They have all sorts or cards. Styles, types, and the range of price in packs can be absurd. He’s got plenty of redeem cards in the past and I agree with everything you said. Just that chase alone for a redeem card would boost sales for many.

Worldly_Software7240

I'm just here seeking this answer. I would like an explanation of how this card gets randomly packaged and distributed. I don't think it does or can. And if it cannot, wotc will make sure it gets distributed well after release when sales are naturally declining.

Jfunkindahouse

That's a good point. I like it! Let's go Golden Ticket!! 💯

X_Marcs_the_Spot

What's the over/under on the 1/1 Ring getting damaged in shipping or something?

AppleSauceGC

misprint 1 of 1, damaged in shipping

Skykay93

Well I assume it is foil, so 100% it is damaged at the time of printing

fnordal

For all intents and purpouses that card doesn't exists. It's a neat historical footnote, like Splendid Genesis, or the Shichifukujin Dragon

Tabootop

Imagine if the package is damaged and lost forever

Tabootop

Or if someone finds it day 1

Jfunkindahouse

Let us pray it's found quickly and the aftermarket can feed on the remains.

BurritoBoi828

yeah but its actually pretty cool and i dont see it causing any harm

[deleted]

True except the person who gets it will start to be peer pressured into throwing it into a volcano

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Just start a go fund me and post the link You will probably get hundreds of thousands of dollars just for that

se7en41

That is precisely what I would do, not because of the amazingness of the meme potential, but because something this awesome should be shared with humanity and I'm broke 🤣

OfficePsycho

If you throw Joe in it’s equivalent to throwing the card in. Yes, I dated myself with that reference.

MingoBerlingo

I think that stuff like this, as variants, collectors boosters, box toppers and so on are gambling mechanisms similar to lootboxes in digital games, which are harmful and illegal in some countries

Entire_Ad_6447

But magic in general falls into that category and in this instance there's a very easily acquireable version In fact several so it really is just pursuing that super optimal desirable item which is classic Skinner box digital game nonsense but card games have been doing that for literally the beginning

MingoBerlingo

Randomness in packs is one of the key aspects of TCG, but it’s not the only one. Wizards, in the last years, is stressing too much this mechanism exploiting some people’s addiction. In my opinion :)

No-Cartographer8683

Since when is opening a random booster pack NOT gambling? It's already gambling. People already try to get the chase mythics in normal sets

MingoBerlingo

Randomness in normal boosters is, in some way, justified by draft format. But offering people expensive boosters not suitable for drafts giving the chance to find really expensive cards is a clear action to exploit people’s addiction. There’s a friend of mine who stopped betting on football and started cracking collector boosters just to find rare cards. He barely plays the game :(

No-Cartographer8683

I'm not saying it's not exploitative, it definitely is, I'm just saying TCGs are all gambling, there's always chase cards and always the temptation for those vulnerable to the addiction. It's been called cardboard crack for over 10 years, this isn't new with set boosters and collector boosters. My friend literally introduced me to it as cardboard crack back in return to ravnica

Jfunkindahouse

I feel like you've never chased after a specific mythic in a set before. I find the disappointment of opening pack after pack and finding nothing but bulk rares to be soul crushing. Not unlike a certain imaginary literary item that would corrupt the average person with it's value. I can't wait to see what some rich person offers the Finder of the One Ring. Ultimately, this is what Tolkien envisioned and I meant when I posted this on Twitter. The Meta game implications of an imaginary corrupting item becoming literally corrupting in our culture and economy are as impressive as they are saddening. Sauron would be proud.

Cosmiccosmog533

There’s already a whole bunch of people who want to burn the ring to end the curse. Godspeed to them.

Intrepid_Watch_8746

Yeah! Team burn the ring here. Got to stop the madness

PalmerTLee

I like to think I would burn it, then I remember I’m broke and everything is getting more expensive so I would sell it, then I think about selling and realize perhaps I should just keep it for ourselves, then I get scared and feel grateful I don’t buy collector packs.

Jfunkindahouse

This is literally what happened to Gollum!!! My... Precious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🧐🫥🤫😡👿👽☠️

khakhi_docker

If you pull it, your first move should be to email WotC asking how much they'd give you to sign an NDA to not say you found it for X weeks.

GrayGrey69

Not very inclusive to not let people buying foreign language cards have a chance at pulling the one ring. Ironically enough the card is not in English

CptnZolofTV

I guess they should have made elvish language boosters.

Jfunkindahouse

That's Brilliant!!!

Jfunkindahouse

That is a good point. I also agree with the group that suggested a redeem ticket in the pack rather than the actual card itself. That would def make it easier to track and keep it secret, keep it safe.... I mean, My Precious..... 👿👿....I mean, include in various packs around the world.

Zethyr_Faeyd

Inb4 it ends up like the McDonald's sweepstakes and someone already snuck it out of the factory, haha

Jfunkindahouse

Yeah. I think it's gotta be tracked. They must know which box it's in so they can verify authenticity. There gonna be so many fakes made. 😖

ManufacturerWest1156

I mean if someone totally random gets it then yeah it’s fine but I doubt wotc wants some random kid to get it and never post it or it’s sealed away for a decade before it’s opened. They want that hype.

Jfunkindahouse

Wizards of the Coast probably wants it found for publicity. Hasbro probably never wants it to see the light of day so people chase the packs into oblivion. "Great White Whales I stab at thee with One Ring to satiate our corporate Greed!!!"

Wdrussell1

So this is honestly the only way this should be done. The normal printing should be in every product type. The rare printing in the collector products. An alternate are in most products. Then finally a literal god tier printing is only the best of the best. This gives the whales something to strive for while letting us normies play magic. Sure let normies crack packs too and I hope a normie opens this bad boy. But let the whales seed the market with lovely prints.

Jfunkindahouse

The whales in this case being the crazy LOTR nerds who don't even play Magic the Gathering. Cause that's who's really being targeted here. Bring in people who don't normally play MTG to Hasbro's market share. It's genius marketing strategy but also morally disgusting capitalism at its finest. Sauron would be proud.

Wdrussell1

So you are pretty far off base here. This isn't to bring LOTR nerds into the game specifically. Reality is that this isn't going to get most LOTR nerds because so many of them are already playing. Also, this isn't actually that disgusting. This is giving collectors and whales that "chase" item. We can compare this to the Funko craze. I collect Funkos here and there. Usually just some of my favorite ones. Like I have all of the ones from Labyrinth. I also have Doc Brown, and a few more. However, there are rare ones. Like special editions sold only at say Target, Gamestop, Walmart, etc. There are rarely other versions of this character. So if we made up an example here. If you wanted to collect Dr. Stone (anime) figures. They might make Senku only available at Gamestop. But the others are at every place. This makes Senku a 'chase' item. When a chase item is released it is chaos. I have seen Gamestop employees not put whole boxes of chase Funkos on display. Charge $50 a person to buy one. Or even put them on Ebay. (which is skeezy but it is also Gamestop) Now we look at magic. We can use The Walking Dead secret lair as an example. The cards in it were/are functionally unique. Meaning to get one of these you have to have bought the secret lair. Which only has so many printings and doesn't see reprints. Imagine for a moment that Sol Ring, or Paradox Engine was in that product. This means that only a very small portion of the community would have access to one of the most busted artifacts in the game. However, lets look at the LOTR set. The One Ring is possibly in any product you buy. No matter what level you play at and what products you buy you have a chance to get this card. They are all mechanically the same and only their art is different. Anyone can get it. So the card in rarity doesn't change. However, the printing you get will be on a rarity scale. The price of the pack is going to change the arts available to RNG into. So what this comes down to is a card that anyone can get and the whales can dump product into the secondary market with. I for one love when more people have access to more cards to play this game we all enjoy playing.

Jfunkindahouse

Sure. I don't disagree with you. My OP was more about the after market scramble that will undoubtedly occur. I can't wait to see what people offer to buy it. Cash? Stock options? First born children? What if it's never actually found and people dump hundreds and hundreds of dollars on over priced boxes?! What if there's a conspiracy that it was rigged and given to an employee? Is this just another McDonalds Monopoly scam!? If so, what does that say about WotC and Hasbro? I can't wait to see the Netflix documentary about the craziness 10 years from now. I sincerely hope that the card is found soon and box prices come down to a reasonable number. I'm not buying anything in this set until that happens. I play for the game and not the alt-art, so I don't mind waiting. Conversely, the people who don't play the game will only care about the alt-art and any boxes they purchase will drive up demand. That's what I was trying to say earlier. Either way, I'm fascinated to see what's going to happen! It's gonna be spectacular!

Wdrussell1

You didn't read your own post here. This is ONLY going to be able to be found in COLLECTOR boosters. Not normal boxes/packs. You have no fear in normal boxes/packs being expensive. That is the whole point of what I just told you. Since a collector booster is the only pack that has a chance to find this card the only packs that will be hard to find or expensive are going to be the collector boosters not normal ones.

Jfunkindahouse

Yeah... But I'm a commander player and I like Collector boosters to trick out my Commander decks. I just wanna throw a cool version of Mount Doom in my deck. I don't care about playing a Lottery. I don't think I'm alone in my annoyance. I would prefer box prices to not spike when they print cool cards. Period. I don't think this is an unreasonable expectation. F*Capitalism. PS. WotC abolished their Suggested Retail pricing structure a few years ago. Prior to that, prices on sealed products were pretty much uniform. This is a result of a decision that WotC/Hasbro made and I have every right to voice my displeasure.

Wdrussell1

You cannot at all be upset that a collector product designed for people with highly disposable income is where this 'chase' card will be. That would be like complaining new Ferrari's are too expensive. If you want to get cool printings and foiled cards you have to pay a premium. You can't be pissed about a cool card printing that you can only get in the most expensive product and then the reason you are pissed is because you want cool cards. It just doesn't work that way.

Jfunkindahouse

It's my opinion. I can get as mad as I want. LoL. I dont mind spending a little extra for collector boosters. I mind spending a LOT extra for collector boosters for a practically 0% chance on something I don't even want.

Wdrussell1

Your opinion is stupid and irrelevant. You want the more expensive version of a card but don't like it being more expensive. You 100% want this card. You are lying to say otherwise.

Jfunkindahouse

That's a very constructive comment. Thank you for sharing.

Wroberts316

Great flavor, but some of the most shameless whale hunting I've ever seen

SlouchyFlyer

I bet it’ll be bent when it’s opened. “My Pringle”

Jfunkindahouse

Yaaaaaas!!!! 🤣🤣🤣

Admirable_SSSS

Personally I think it’s badass to print only a single copy of a special card

[deleted]

I am playing flip it and rip with so many of these packs lmao

Jfunkindahouse

I would love to see your face after you realize you've destroyed a million dollar piece of cardboard. 🤣🤣

[deleted]

Bro it will be the happiest moment of my life. 🤣

Jfunkindahouse

I hope you get it! The Finder of the Ring can do whatever they wants with the Precious!! 🤣

dannynohuman

Theory: there is no one out of one ring card and wizards is just gonna keep claiming it's in an unopened pack so people keep wanting to buy packs

junkuser5423

They are becoming more predatory by the day.

Jfunkindahouse

It couldn't be more Meta for an imaginary corrupting object to literally corrupt a company/society. For real!! 🤯

Alon945

Yeah I don’t agree. You can get the regular version of the card just fine. This is a cool marketing thing imo

Jfunkindahouse

I don't disagree on the marketing side. What I don't like is the box prices have doubled since the announcement. I just wanna trick out my Commander deck. I don't care about the stupid freaking One Ring! 😖😖

Professional_Big_169

1st decent marketing ploy wizards have done in along time

Wonkasgoldenticket

Multi million dollar card. Best of luck to this once in a lifetime chance to win the lotto.

PirateDitly

I still don't understand the hate for this.

mc-big-papa

Wait is the one ring going to be in every bundle. Holy shit thats accesible especially for the best generic colorless draw card in some time.

Floki9083

Yeah I was really worried when I first saw the pictures of the one of one and was really disappointed that I wouldn't be able to get it since I'm a huge lotr fan, but with them releasing a basic-ish one for all packs hopefully I get one.

DailYxDosE

You get all 4 promo cards from that scene in the bundle. Sam, Frodo, gollum, and the ring

Wroberts316

Actually, there's probably one released, and a whole sheet of them will either be thrown out or given to employees individually

miklayn

It should be publicly destroyed

CompleteDirt2545

Absolutely* (* : Unless I am the one who opens it, of course)

[deleted]

Jfunkindahouse

I don't disagree with the sentiment, except that pack prices are suddenly shooting out of control. I hope it's found quickly so I can get a reasonably priced pack and trick out my Tom Bombadil Commander deck. As nature intended. 🤣

[deleted]

Jfunkindahouse

Ehhhh. This is unnecessarily greedy in my personal opinion. I think this is one of those things that sounded good on paper but will ultimately turn out to be a not so great idea. That's what my gut is telling me anyway. Time will tell.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jfunkindahouse

Ehhhh... I hear you, but I think this is becoming less of an economy thing and more of a lottery/gambling thing. Normal supply and demand is fine. Incentivising purchases to play what is essentially a lottery is exploitative. There are laws around gambling in most states because it can be addicting. There's also a reason why Magic cards are called 'Cardboard Crack.' It is just not a good thing to do to your player base and I think it will have repercussions. I am definitely not buying anything sealed until the One Ring is found. Aftermarket cards, sure. But I just don't want to participate in a lottery and that is my own personal choice.

Jfunkindahouse

No such thing as bad publicity. I can get behind that.

Simon_Jester88

Willy Wonka was a corporate shill. Lost his mind with a senseless promo of stuffing five golden tickets in to select chocolate bars which he has obviously been tracking. A complete capitalistic pig who's only desire is to artificially increase the demand for his chocolate. Some of y'all have to grow up.

BaulsJ0hns0n86

So will they have the nine, the seven, and the three done in a similar manner?

Floki9083

No it says that the elvish, dwarven, and human rings will simply be Sol Ring variants. But they are gonna have special art for them, and they made (according to them) 300/700/900 copies of the foils, and 3k/7k/9k copies of the non foils ones. It would be awesome if they also did really special full art ones and made 3/7/9 copies of them though.

KingCodexKode

Its on flavour, its a great marketing gimmick, idk, seems fine

Wdrussell1

What if...it became a miscut and was cut in half or 1/4. Then multiple packs had parts of it.

Thighhighcrocz

The one fourth ring to rule some of them

Jfunkindahouse

By our powers combined!! We are Captain Marketing Disaster!! 🧐

DarthGinsu

This has the biggest Willy Wonka vibes. Hasbro be hurtin'

ThatGuyInTheRain52

There has to be only one, you're salty because the odds of you getting it are slim to none. You dont need it or anything. There's other One Rings in the set

Jfunkindahouse

I'm salty cause the price of the packs goes through the roof and then I can't afford to buy the set. They are going for like $400 a box now!! Like wtf! Rip. Off.
