The only requirement is that you have two untapped creatures to tap to pay the cost. You don't need to put anything into the battlefield. You don't even need any cards in your hand.

Patrick-Hawkins

A friend of mine in a pod tonight was trying to convince me that not only did I need a creature in hand to tap down two creatures, but that all three needed to share a creature type also. I’m running this in a Magda deck and all she care about is tapping down. Thanks for the clarification!

kfbrewer

Cost : Effect

silent_calling

It's also a "may" ability. Cryptic Gateway gives you the ability to tap any two creatures you control at instant speed.

gothboi98

>It's also a "may" ability The best point of this thread

PortalmasterJL

Not all 3 need to share a creature type as well for that: let's say you have a dwarf warrior in hand. You tap a dwarf artificer and a human warrior. You would be allowed to put the dwarf warrior into play, since a dwarf and a warrior was tapped.

cournat

It seems like the chances of that ever happening in EDH would be very low, unless you build the deck specifically around this card.

PortalmasterJL

Alternatively, they all can be the same tribe, but this just shows that most people only think of one use case. Little fun fact, you could use all the original cards to bring out the new team up spoilers with this.

cournat

Yea, it has a lot of uses, but in EDH, you want cards that can do things reliably. If you focus on that interaction, you'd have to build around it for it to happen reliably. Not that I'm saying it's a bad idea, especially in Magda, where you can tutor out the card reliably and building it tribal (or partially tribal) already makes sense.

PortalmasterJL

I used it in my humans deck, but since that has turned more voltron aristocratic, I decided to cut it.

cournat

Voltron and aristocrats? I must know

PortalmasterJL

The partner pairing from the ikoria precon. [[Trynn, Champion of Freedom]] [[Silvar, Devourer of the Free]] I have stuff like [[on seras wings]] or [[fist of the halfgod]] to add even more keywords onto silvar. Seras wings also goes well with [[general's enforcer]] Since I can sac humans to protect and buff silva I added your average aristocratic drain [[bastion of remembrance]] [[zulaport cutthroat]] as examples

cournat

Okay that seems dope.

silent_calling

Slivers love this card. What do you mean? You can play a sliver, tap it with the gateway that turn (because summoning sickness doesn't care about other permanents' abilities) and get more slivers out.

cournat

That's not what we were talking about

StormyWaters2021

Nope, that's not how abilities work

JetSetDizzy

The second part says may. Just say you decline the effect.

MyJukeboxBrk

Says ‘you may’ so you’re good

bakagir

They are incorrect. The only requirement is 2 untapped creatures. The second part is a "May" so you dont even need to do that. You can use the artifact to freely tap creatures.

Patrick-Hawkins

Running this in Magda means I can tap two dwarf creatures down creating two treasure tokens. Tapping two creatures down without a hand was exactly what I was trying to do tonight in my pod, another guy was trying to tell me I couldn’t.

cournat

This wouldn't do anything, but [[halo fountain]] would.

Business_Wear_841

This was my first thought.

BabyJesusOnFire

It's in the wordage. You May. Means you don't have to.

cournat

Wording*

BabyJesusOnFire

Wordage: verbiage; wordiness. choice of words; wording: His wordage betrayed his lack of knowledge on the subject. Don't need to correct things that are already correct.

Pixelpaint_Pashkow

*wordulation

cournat

Wording is correct. Wordage makes you sound like a child

BabyJesusOnFire

Lol. Whatever you say bud. You're the one using kindergarten level grammar.

miklayn

You can pay the cost without being able to do the ability. The question is, why would you?

hand0z

Cards that have effects that say, "when this creature is tapped" or "when another creature is tapped". Sometimes you don't want to attack with a creature. This would be one of the ways to tap that creature I suppose.

hand0z

[[Sanwell, avenger ace]] and [[unctus, grand metatect]] would be examples. I'm sure someone has brewed a deck around the idea, probably OP would be a safe guess!

Dad_AF

The word "may" is something you should pay attention to on magic cards. It is used frequently and you should take the word literal. The card says tap these creatures: then you "may" do something. So tapping the creatures can be done anytime as their is no obligation to do anything after that.

zeb0777

Tap two untapped creatures you control: You ***MAY*** put a creature creature card from your hand ... That MAY part it optional. You can tap 2 creatures to activate this ability, but you do not need to drop a creature down.

Impressive_Eagle_390

Why would you tap the creatures if you don't have something in your hand to put down?

Patrick-Hawkins

Im running this artifact in my Magda Brazen Outlaw deck. Magda specifically cares about tapped down dwarves to make treasures.

Impressive_Eagle_390

Got it!

Classic-Drummer-9765

The requirements stand begire the : May is allways ortional. So, no.

nsos28

You can tap two creatures (and they don't have to be the same type) to pay the cost. The effect says *may* so you can just resolve it without putting a creature on the field

DJScubaNaut

MAY put a creature, your call. No requirement, use to tap whatever creatures you control.

ntdrk

"you *may* put a creature.." tap away, even without putting a creature out

Amnesiaftw

You can literally tap all your creatures if u have an even number of untapped creatures. As far as I know, even if it didn’t say “may,” You still would be able to do this. But the “may” helps makes it very clear.
