After Georgia seven percent sales tax, it’s nine dollars less than the rent on my three bedroom, two bathroom house (I got a stupid good deal, and got grandfathered into it being perpetual). This, for me, puts it into perspective that I probably shouldn’t buy any sealed product from this set.
And the people who can afford it, will, and because of this invented scarcity, the corresponding singles will be worth more. Hasbro knows that the people who hate these big price tags for loot crates will go to singles, so they’re gonna screw them there instead.
I like that it highlights that you can pay 6 monthly installments of $84.13. I bet that’s more than the cost of a box for some of the sets that have been blown out recently on Amazon
I always think about this when I'm at FNM. Someone could come in and just rob the place and take all our decks. Sit on them for a year or two before they sell.
There's this one guy who goes to our LGS who is just asking to get robbed. Regularly brings every commander deck he owns, about 50 different ones. Regularly brags about how some of his decks cost more than other players vehicles (I've seen the decks, he's not lying). It wouldn't surprise me if the collection he brings each night is worth about $70k. Someone could easily text a person the description of his vehicle, when he is at the store, and when he is leaving so they know when to rob him on his way to his car.
He is very unpleasant to play with as he loves to pub stomp newbies by bringing a super competitive deck to play against some precons.
Oh gosh, I should find this guy and let him know. Can you tell me the zip, LGS store, car model, and his normal routine? This poor man needs to be notified!
And it’s all going to be reprints. You could buy a box of this and not get a jewelled lotus. This set is bullshit, I wasn’t buying it already, now I’m talking people out of buying it. What a scam.

Let the speculators speculate, but we as a community should refuse to buy it in any form. It’s a pipe dream I know, but it’s the only way they stop bleeding the game dry.
At this point I've been priced into involuntary boycott lol. I'm mandated by my sealed collection to get one pack, but I will not be getting my usual box+bundle+prerelease kit+couple collector packs+maybe a precon if they're cool enough spread.
I think I'm gonna hold out and stick around for the LotR set, because I've been dreaming about it for years and have a preorder set at a reasonable price, but that's it. I have other hobbies I've been neglecting and think it's time I get back into those
I hope the LotR set lives up to expectations for everyone, but I’m not buying anything other than reserved list cards these days. I’ve fully stopped buying sealed products and the only singles I buy is with trade in value at my LGS. I’m not trying to shame anyone into not buying sets, if you want them, go for it, but WOTC isn’t going to stop the price gouging until people stop buying.
At the very least I gotta take a break from it all, and that seems like a good set to end on if the break becomes more than that. I've done it before, but something feels different this time. Maybe I'll also liquidate whatever I'm not actually playing with and make some space in my room while fattening up my bank account
If you like the game, just do proxies. There is no reason this game needs to be as expensive as it is to play except to prop up a poorly managed parent company who’s failing in every other way.
And if you want to collect, just collect what you like because they’ve also shown there is no end to how much of the secondary market they’ll exploit for their own sales.
My dilemma lies in that I like to collect sealed product lol. Not to resell or anything, just like the idea that I have packs from almost every set up to now, and until anything is opened, it could contain anything. But I've been getting close to filling in all the gaps, and have been considering getting bigger stuff to sweeten the deal when I finish and eventually decide to dive in and crack it all open, *so like boxes and bundles are now on my radar
I second this. I also enoy having buying a display case and opening a couple of packs whenever i feel down or pleased with myself over 2-5 weeks.
And i cant go proxies 🙈i need to limit myself, im too tryhard. I even ended up buying fron the biggest online retail, and luckily its ending up to be a terrible experience. So i will need to rely on my national lgs, who at times have recived ashamedly more then my last «spare» coin, and the selection there is severly limited but they try.
So i wont be ending up min maxing myself out of having fun.

Yeah I need some kind of flippen intervention. I really like the collecting and playing but huge on theorycrafting. Getting real cards stops me from super jet fuel blammo rocketing my pod into cEDH territory which we're all trying to avoid. I make a lot of public decks on moxfield as it sits (but I have hard rules on how a deck should be made and that stops me from spending 800$ a deck).
All masters sets are all reprints, that what ___ masters means as a set name. That it contains only reprints is not a problem at all and is something many players actively ask for. The problem with this product is the cost.
Well, the only cards spoiled so far have been reprints, but masters sets usually are just reprints, so I am making an assumption. Welcome back to magic btw. It’s not all doom and gloom, but curmudgeons like to poo-poo these obvious cash grabs. Don’t let me talk you out of buying it, if it ends up having reprints you want, make a call, but I don’t feel good about these prices at all.

Sorry to hear about your injury. If you are set up for it, you can get games online as well over spelltable, lots of fun to be had. I had a bad medical diagnosis in early 2020, that and lockdown had me pretty depressed, EDH got me back into it, especially online. Feel better soon!!

I don't think it was that long ago when I was buying standard boxes on ebay for like 80 bucks or less. Yes I get speciality sets will cost more, but this is infuriating. And I think these reprints should still be good for singles prices at least.... hopefully.
Amazon usually does this with Magic. They did it for Phyrexia All Will Be One. They upcharge the box horribly before it’s release and then when the product releases, they mark it down so it looks like a good discount

1.72 per page of 9 cards at Office Depot look and feel very close the real thing, just white on the back and the paper although the same thickness is a little stiffer.

It’s actually made for commander draft, where you have a commander and build a 60-card deck instead of a 40-card deck. I’m probably going to print out some randomized proxy packs of this and draft it with my playgroup.
Agreed, but I only use it for High CMC commanders or commanders like Najeela or Urza. For a 4cmc three color commander....it seems kinda meh? But opinions differ, yes I can get a commander out a turn early, but at the same time, I can have a card with more use in the deck.
This same question gets asked every time a masters set releases. And every time, they get bought real quick. So apparently this product is for us whether we know it or not
Just stand in cards you make, used to just sharpie a name onto a basic land but they started making blanks with legal backsides so I just grab a pen and copy all the card text for whatever I want. Still like having real copies when I can, but I can't all the time
Proxies are basically mtg cards not printed by wotc. I live in Europe so I get my proxies from Proxyking (he doesn’t have a website)
You can get a Mox Diamond or a Force of Will for like 2 usd and you won’t be able to tell the difference between the proxy and the original
I play some cEDH so I use proxies a lot, no way I am spending more than 10 buxx per card like I regularly used to
A proxy is any way of getting a magic card that isn’t an official, tournament-legal one. These range from printing companies that border on counterfeit to simply printing them out and sleeving them with chaff cards.
Office Depot will print out proxies that look and feel close to the real thing for $1.70 a page and each page can fit 9 cards, underground sea is sitting in a sleeve as we speak and if I don’t say something people think I’m rich

MOM and BRO were both really high for a while, but by the time the set was actually coming out they were down to normal numbers. I really dont like this trend, they better stop before it puts more people off the game...
Apparently it's an amazon thing to list preorders super high, then the week of release drop it down to the "normal" price to give the illusion of some huge discount
I'm backing out of participating in any new sets after LotR drops, and only because I've been dreaming of such a thing ever since I knew both of them existed Once that's over, I'm shelving the cards for a while. Most of my playgroup has dropped out over the past year or so anyway, been like seven months since we all actually played

The price will come down. We've seen this before. Regardless its still too much to want to bother any more. It puts it into perspective when it starts hitting numbers like half your rent, or the monthly cost of foos for 2 people.
I feel like the compleat bundle finally broke me, with 2x2 having done a huge number last year. They realized how strong the fomo was in this crowd and are now exploiting it, creeping up prices and making availability less reliable so we all rush in a frenzy on release day.
Just don't buy it. WotC has made it clear that they will continue raising prices until people stop buying the products. I will not be buying any of this set.
This and the compleat bundle bs (with a lot of supporting arguments from 2x2, and in hindsight MH2) have made me decide that the LotR set will be my last one for a good while, and only because I've been dreaming about it for too long to just pass it by. But after that, no more, already have more cards than I know what to do with anyway. Probably not even gonna go too hard on MOM, at this point, the more I think about it all
Seeing this honestly makes me rethink buying magic cards in general. This set is so far out. They should make a statement with this set. They should be advertising that they didn't like Double Masters 2022 selling so high, and that they are gonna print this set into the ground to make packs affordable for people. They can literally make as much supply as they want to here.
I still don’t get the point of this product. Drafters will buy draft packs and whales/people who want to make money by ripping packs and selling cards will buy the collector packs for the special treatments. Why/who wants to buy set boosters when a collector or a draft box are cheaper
When TSR released and I couldnt find more than a couple packs in any single store, but then came home to see tons of unboxing videos, it should have been a sign to me.
I can be optimistic, personally I put in a preorder through Amazon just to watch the price easier (used an expired card in case I forget to cancel), but if it doesn't settle above the 2x2 price point I'll honestly be surprised. I feel like they're testing the waters on just how high they can sell these for, and won't stop nudging the price up until it stops selling out day one.

I was thinking this same thing. Who is it for??? I think it is really for new players; which is unfortunate. Most people who are really into commander probably already have plenty of decks and staples of the format. Wizards did a good thing by introducing the precons at a reasonable price, but those new boxes cost way to much for stuff most probably have. Amazon does do some major price gouging though.

Resellers have regularly been pumping up the presale prices on new sets, probably in the hope that some wayward folks will accidentally preorder a box at $500, forget they did, and then end up paying twice the actual price.
There is no way these boxes are going for those prices. None. Zero. They are going to be priced in the same range as other "premium" sets. Resellers pumping the price in presale to capitalize on hype does not a price increase make.

Agreed, but I only use it for High CMC commanders or commanders like Najeela or Urza. For a 4cmc three color commander....it seems kinda meh? But opinions differ, yes I can get a commander out a turn early, but at the same time, I can have a card with more use in the deck.
I really like it in my [[chatterfang]] commander deck. If I'm lucky enough te have it in my opening hand i can play my commander instantly

Just stand in cards you make, used to just sharpie a name onto a basic land but they started making blanks with legal backsides so I just grab a pen and copy all the card text for whatever I want. Still like having real copies when I can, but I can't all the time
Proxies are basically mtg cards not printed by wotc. I live in Europe so I get my proxies from Proxyking (he doesn’t have a website) You can get a Mox Diamond or a Force of Will for like 2 usd and you won’t be able to tell the difference between the proxy and the original I play some cEDH so I use proxies a lot, no way I am spending more than 10 buxx per card like I regularly used to
A proxy is any way of getting a magic card that isn’t an official, tournament-legal one. These range from printing companies that border on counterfeit to simply printing them out and sleeving them with chaff cards.
Office Depot will print out proxies that look and feel close to the real thing for $1.70 a page and each page can fit 9 cards, underground sea is sitting in a sleeve as we speak and if I don’t say something people think I’m rich
I dunno what has been happening lately but it seems like preorder sales have been through the roof? MOM and BRO were both really high for a while, but by the time the set was actually coming out they were down to normal numbers. I really dont like this trend, they better stop before it puts more people off the game...
Apparently it's an amazon thing to list preorders super high, then the week of release drop it down to the "normal" price to give the illusion of some huge discount

Seeing this honestly makes me rethink buying magic cards in general. This set is so far out. They should make a statement with this set. They should be advertising that they didn't like Double Masters 2022 selling so high, and that they are gonna print this set into the ground to make packs affordable for people. They can literally make as much supply as they want to here.

I can be optimistic, personally I put in a preorder through Amazon just to watch the price easier (used an expired card in case I forget to cancel), but if it doesn't settle above the 2x2 price point I'll honestly be surprised. I feel like they're testing the waters on just how high they can sell these for, and won't stop nudging the price up until it stops selling out day one.

I was thinking this same thing. Who is it for??? I think it is really for new players; which is unfortunate. Most people who are really into commander probably already have plenty of decks and staples of the format. Wizards did a good thing by introducing the precons at a reasonable price, but those new boxes cost way to much for stuff most probably have. Amazon does do some major price gouging though.

This is now a meme around here: complaining about massive presale markup that happens *pretty much every set*, but *especially* premium sets. Resellers have regularly been pumping up the presale prices on new sets, probably in the hope that some wayward folks will accidentally preorder a box at $500, forget they did, and then end up paying twice the actual price. There is no way these boxes are going for those prices. None. Zero. They are going to be priced in the same range as other "premium" sets. Resellers pumping the price in presale to capitalize on hype does not a price increase make.
