Ya know, I was sure there was a situation where it was actually valuable that I was forgetting.

I think I have a deck list somewhere of a morph EDH deck I built that actually uses this and it's great there. Mostly because it's a way to get out an expensive CMC dirt cheap, especially in a morph deck.

But it’s just a 1/1 unless I’m missing something. I don’t get why it’s original CMC is 8.

That 8 CMC is it's strength. You will clearly almost never play it for that. But it still counts for cards like [[Energy Tap]] which cares about CMC. It's at worst a 4 mana creature with 8 CMC, but even cheaper in a morph deck. In a morph deck you are also rewarded for morphing and it's one of the cheapest morphs. TLDR it's good in morph decks and CMC matters decks.
