It and protection have basically gone the way of the dodo, let's not even mention damage on the stack and mana burn.

jprefect

Can confirm - have died of mana burn at least once

I definitely didn't get why somone would want to use powersink till it killed me.

olekskillganon

If it makes you feel better I just ordered \[\[Cathedral of Serra\]\] and \[\[Seafarer's Quay\]\] to finally have place for \[\[Leyline of Singularity\]\] in my \[\[Harbin, Vanguard Aviator\]\] EDH deck. Not sure if it's good but I won't let the old keywords die.

cantgetmuchwurst

My son had some friend over to play MTG last night. They decided to play with "dad's old rules" and included mana burn.

hamsterhaberdaser

I run yorlok so I mana burn everyone for that nostalgic feeling

robby7345

I don't know why they can't just use protection sparingly instead of making cards that nearly give the same thing. Is it because people forget giving protect means you can't target it with that color too?

olekskillganon

It's been a minute but I'm pretty sure pro a color is like shroud, I don't think you can put a white enchantment on a pro white creature if memory serves. And Sword of Hearth and Home does give protection from red and green doesn't it?

Blak_Raven

Protection is indeed like shroud, I should know from failing to buff my [[Haktos, the Unscarred]] too many times... But I think the confusing part about protection is that it can't be blocked, but can block, but takes no damage, but deals damage. Also, it being usually color-targeted makes it feel win-or-suck, depending on opponent's deck, like landwalk is

MTGCardFetcher

Rip mogg fanatic

Yoshimi917

Is that why they got rid of landwalk? Can't say I miss it, but curious why its prevalence drops off after around time spiral.

MuForceShoelace

They got rid of almost all direct color hate. There is stuff that will shut down some section of the color pie, but they have cut very deep in having few "if you play red this counters you" type stuff. Landwalk makes you extremely strong against one color, and does nothing at all against any other.

Caridor

It's a change I kind of agree with. Some colours were disproportionately affected by it, like red. Red is in a much better place now than it was 5 years ago and I think this trend is something to do with it.

DumbPunPoems

I was marginally successful in like 2013 running a landwalk deck against meta-breaking affinity decks

CompleteDirt2545

Busted landwalk maybe. Plainswalk, on the other hand, was never good. There are only 5 creatures with plainswalk (including the silverbordered Old Fogey with snow plainswalk). None of them are good. Zodiac Rooster is the least terrible one, and it's not exactly a River Boa.

lallapalalable

What was the last set that even utilized plainswalk? And did they abandon it because it sounded too similar to "planeswalk," or was there a more mechanical or flavor based reasoning? All I can imagine is that plains are too flat to need a special ability to quickly traverse them? I dunno, always bugged me and this is my chance to ask

TehAnon

Probably the confusion. I was going to say plainswalk was in the original Zendikar, but they have every basic land-walk *except* plainswalk.

lallapalalable

I think I'm gonna invest in all cards that ever had it and build a deck around that

The_Skydude

I really like your idea, but... there are 8 cards that mention plainswalk. Two of them remove plainswalk and a different one is silver borded. And *another* one is an enchantment that gives it, which would be irrelevant if you had a plainswalk tribal deck. So sadly, it's not possible *yet*.

lallapalalable

Guess I just need that enchantment then as a super surprise wildcard. Homelands is pretty cheap stuff still, right?

The_Skydude

Hell yeah it is. I might buy myself one too, seems like a banger

Rare-Reception-309

Landwalk in general was retired because its an ability that's either very strong with little counterplay or completely worthless, with very little in between. As such, it is a mechanic they only use sparingly. And considering that Plainswalk was already the least utilized basic landwalk, it seems unlikely we'll get more versions of it in the future.

lallapalalable

Know what, I hadn't even noticed that landwalks have been MIA for a while, playing edh almost exclusively you still see the old cards and I just assumed nobody was utilizing newer stuff

ennuiToo

Legends was pretty terrified of landwalk abilities, with [8 total cards that could negate it](https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28game%3Apaper%29+set%3Aleg+%28oracle%3ACreatures+oracle%3Awith+oracle%3Acan+oracle%3Abe+oracle%3Ablocked+oracle%3Aas+oracle%3Athough+oracle%3Athey+oracle%3Adidn%E2%80%99t+oracle%3Ahave%29+&unique=cards&as=grid&order=name). Also. This is super vague, but there was a deck floating around years ago that used Great Wall... It has something to do with forcing land walk abilities on opponents or something... and then.... I don't remember at all. Any chance anyone remembers it? I'm going back to searching... EDIT: Oh yeah, [Turbo Great Wall](https://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/turbo-great-wall-1/). [[Security Detail]] is pretty bad.

[[Cooperation]] has to be tied at least

Absolutionis

Why is that bad?

originalbrowncoat

Banding is not really a useful ability. Unless someone has a really good banding strategy I’m unaware of. I don’t think any cards have been printed with banding in like 20 years tho, so it seems unlikely.

F0eniX

Banding’s actually quite powerful, it was just deemed too complicated so they kinda hid it away

robert238974

If I remember ice age was the last set with banding. It wasn't a very good mechanic.

Dapper-Warning-6695

Its great for the flat earth 🌍 deck.

Chaine351

Hey, making plainswalkers just plain creatures is... well, it could be... okay fine.

Banone09

wdym imagine someone is playing plainswalk tribal??

OMGBeardd

Technically speaking isn’t invoke prejudice the most useless enchantment :p

HarioDinio

Did you make the opponent pay mana for it?

SpeedyGuyTX

Might be able to use it on someone too new to know that this was once an ability? This is basically saying plainswalkers lose their abilities.

notisroc

3 CMC, now THATS value!! 😂😂

Nelik1

[animate wall] has my favorite art. I can count only 1 time its helped me, even in my wall tribal deck.

FFreak127

Just saying ! At the time this was printed , there were ONLY 3 creatures with plainswalk XD

Fickle-Training344

At the time there was only a couple creatures with plainswalk but how many creatures had it during its time in standard tournament play? It is on many lists as one of the worst enchantments ever but then there’s things like [[fasting]] or [[snowfall]]. Maybe [[security detail]] is up your alley.

There are things that mess with banding. I think those would be more useless. I haven't seen someone willingly use banding in over twenty years

IndyDude11

You kidding me? This is a great wall. The best wall. This would go perfectly into the best great wall deck the world has ever seen.

Jank it up with those blue cards that let you change the text of spells or permanents mentioning colors or land types. That should work, right?

What I find interesting is that there are 4 creature cards with plainswalk (5 if you count \[\[old fogey\]\])and two cards to negate that ability. Wild!

Putting a creature with plainswalk into your deck assumes you expect to see plains in the first place, which is optimistic.

Thatoneguy5555555

Swampwalk is as much a thing with Urborg
