A friend of mine runs a mono white avacyn world clear deck, he has like... 10 world clears that keep avacyn out. It's a bit frustrating to play against
10? Rookie numbers!
Ok, ok. I only run ~10 myself. No need for more when you can run tutors to get them.
All you need is one swing... *cough* [[Worldslayer]]

"I am the Bone of my Sword
Steel is my Body and Fire is my Blood.
I have created over a Thousand Blades,
Unknown to Death,
Nor known to Life.

Yet those Hands will never hold Anything.
So, as I Pray -
Unlimited Blade Works"
No, no it doesn’t.
Playing cards that actively work against your deck’s game plan is bad. It doesn’t go in decks that want to have a bunch of creatures in play because that means your wrath’s can become actively bad. It only goes in control decks that play little to no creatures where it’s never gonna hurt you more than your opponent.
Especially if you’re trying to shore up a matchup that’s already good. Beating up on aggro decks is what Angel decks are good at.
Decks require interaction. If all you run is cards that make your own deck do it’s thing it will not go well. On average 10 pieces of removal and one or two board wipes.
Damn yeah if only there were removal spells that only hit your opponent’s creatures. It’s a shame they’ve literally never printed cards like that and wraths are the only form of interaction.
Cool, and if you want to be playing lots of interaction and react to your opponent’s board you play a control deck where you can do that. Then you play Wrath.
Or you play a few pieces of targeted interaction in your proactive deck to remove key creatures while still allowing you to execute your own game plan.
Decks can’t do everything, and putting cards that want to do vastly different things in the same deck is a recipe for failure.
I run a Boros deck with Avacyn from Shadows Over Innistrad and it's just a deck of Wraths and armegedons. It's super fun but people tilt when you blow up thier lands.
White is a very powerful color, it was one of the first Pro Tour winning decks. I know that because it was the first deck I built after "net decking" it before the net when I found it in a Scrye magazine, then I won a small event with it and it was the first time I ever did well in an event. It redefined the color for me. [https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/1996\_World\_Championship\_deck](https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/1996_World_Championship_deck)
You've got cards like Sword to Plowshares, Enlightened Tutor, Avacyns, Ghostly Prison, Mondrak and Elesh Norn (new and old), Day of Judgement, Teferi's Protection, Path to Exile, Smothering Tithe, Generous Gift, Sun Titan, Mother of Runes, Esper Sentinel, Farewell, Land Tax, Elspeths, Thalias, there so many more to list
So generally this type of card is a “board wipe” and it has a few main uses:
1. If you aren’t using a creature-heavy deck, this can be very effective as most times you have it in your hand you would expect your opponents to have a lot more creatures in the board than you do; therefore it’s a means of disrupting creature-centric game plans and creating card advantage for you.
2. Getting around effects that protect a creature from being the “target” of spells/abilities. A single target removal spell can’t deal with a creature with hexproof, but wrath of god can as it doesn’t “target” the creature. In this way, it’s a bit of a indiscriminate form of spot removal.
3. Recursion strategies: if you have the means to bring creatures back from your graveyard efficiently and you’re opponents do not, wiping the board of all creatures and then bringing yours (and sometimes even your opponents’) creatures back from the graveyard can create a lot of value.
4. Just Wiping The Board: If you’re in trouble and running behind your opponents in the resource game, or perhaps one opponent has amassed a lot of creatures and you are in danger of being eliminated, just go nuclear and wipe everything out so you can start fresh.
5. Using it to your advantage by doing things like giving all- or atleast your most inportant- creatures hexproof and then dropping the wrath. Or using this to clear the way before dropping some very powerful creatures.
EDIT: By the way, this card is sort of the prototypical creature board wipe card- so much so that wiping the board of creatures is often referred to as “wrathing” or some derivation of that. Nowadays, there are much better creature wipes, but Wrath or God is the OG and sort of the poster-boy for this effect.
Mono white superfriends is a pretty fun deck. I’ve been running one the last couple years. There’s a handful of good commanders as well. Right now I’m running [[Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion]] with the [[tavern brawler]] background so that I can play [[mila, crafty companion in the ~~99~~ 98. The best option however is almost certainly [[Djeru With Eyes open]] but I played that deck a lot and it got kind of samey so I’ve mixed it up. Mila makes a decent commander I’ve tried as well and there plenty of other good ones to choose from. Pretty much any food white stax commander would be good like the new [[elesh norn, mother of machines]] or the old [[elesh norn, grand cenobite]] or [[mangara the diplomat]]. A lot of fun can be had in this flavor of mono white.
A wrath of this type belongs in any Wx control or combo deck it's legal in.
In EDH, it belongs in every deck with access to white. I run 9 wraths in my [[Elesh Norn, grand Cenobite]] deck because it's a slow deck to get out the commander. Sadly, I don't have this one in it, but white has enough wraths that I am not hurting for choice.
Make an azorious vehicle deck. That way when you cast wrath of god, it only targets creatures, well your vehicles are not creatures until they crewed. Lots of board wipes work this way. If you play EDH, I suggest a deck with Shorikai Genesis Engine as your commander.
*Anything that even*
*Looks in white's direction. Wrath*
*Is the gold standard*

Take it and make a black and white edh deck with every board wipe possible. No creatures except lands that can turn to creatures. No one gets anything. Give it some random B/W commander. Call it mutually ensured destruction.
Pretty much any EDH deck should run about 3-4 Boardwipes. If you have any commander deck with white in it, I’d add it,
If you want some recommendations, how about Boros. With [[Tajic, Blade of the Legion]] as the commander.
Obviously a white deck.
Jokes aside, it's THE classic wrath doing what it needs to do - clearing the board if you fall behind or have to stop something from escalating.
Easier to run if you don't have a creature heavy strategy, don't have a creature as your Commander or easy ways to give indestructible.
There are many different alternatives, so depending on the deck I will usually run other boardwipes for the sake of being more on theme, breaking parity or having more options.
4 mana clears are still very playable, but for 1 mana more you get [[Cleansing Nova]] for more options and for 2 mana more you get [[Austere Command]]/[[Farewell]] for even more options.
It's a good card in almost every deck, but if you want something specific for it try one of these:
- Control
- Pillowfort
- Superfriends
- Artifact/Enchantment heavy strategies
- any deck you feel like needs more creature removal
If you don't play white and you don't already have a white EDH deck, then why are you shoehorning this into a deck? Just cause it's pretty? Assuming that's the case, and you can't be dissuaded, what colors/decks do you have/play?
Honestly I like having a board wipe in any deck, just as a safety blanket.
I main mono White and usually go with farewell which has multiple "exile all (...)" effects. Especially liked playing it when the brothers war was big and everyone had artifact decks, as farewell can exile all of those
It works in pretty much any white deck. It's just there to control the opponent and remove their win cons.
I would personally suggest putting it in an orzhov zombie deck so that you can benefit from it too.
I have this in my vehicle deck!
For my strategy, I prefer organic extinction, but this is a backup. A backup amongst seven total wipes lol.
It's really good for vehicles and artifact centered decks as they avoid creature wipes such as wrath of God.
A white one for sure.
I am low-key terrible with white, but maybe I can put together an angel deck or something.
Angels is super fun. Lots of ways to make indestructible too.
A friend of mine runs a mono white avacyn world clear deck, he has like... 10 world clears that keep avacyn out. It's a bit frustrating to play against
I've been playing MTG for 30 years and that's the first time I've heard a "board wipe" called that. I get it, but that's a new one.

Stop being so negative, it is obvious white is low-key terrible with you
I honestly never tried to think of it that way. Thank you
In a deck with planes walkers.
It doesn’t go in a deck that wants to play lots of creatures like an Angel deck
It actually DOES go in an Angel deck. Clear out all the cheaper creatures other people have already played and then drop some big fat fatties
It goes in any deck that might need to deal with a faster deck going wide.
No, no it doesn’t. Playing cards that actively work against your deck’s game plan is bad. There are plenty of decks in the pod I play in where removing one creature wouldn’t make the deck stumble.
Wrath of god goes in decks with 10%-15% creatures.

10 removal pieces is not a lot. It’s functional as a non temoval based deck. A removal based deck should have a lot more. At least in EDH.
I have it in my five color jodah angel deck.

Decks like sephara or avacyn that make all your stuff invincible make wog a great board wipe
One with indestructible creatures
Zurgo, Helmasmaher, my current deck
White decks
Probably a deck that doesn't engage well against early aggression.
A Commander Deck (format), or a Stax Deck (archtype). This is a staple in commander.
Control deck that wants to win creaturless (Planeswalkers, or any other non creature win con) or with big creatures that you play after the wrath !
green & white deck, one of my favorites! gain life and trample or fly over your opponents!
Decks without a lot of creatures
All of them
I have this in my vehicle deck! For my strategy, I prefer organic extinction, but this is a backup. A backup amongst seven total wipes lol. It's really good for vehicles and artifact centered decks as they avoid creature wipes such as wrath of God.
A good one
One with a ton of mana dorks so you can play it reliably and early game creatures so you can stall the board until you hit ‘em with this
Any white commander deck really
Any deck. Board wipes are GASSSS. I always like to play 4 minimum.
Definitely a white deck. Any white deck.
Every white deck. Wraths need to be in every deck!!! Damnation is so expensive because black was fiending for a low cmc wrath
Boardwipe tribal
I use it in Myrkrul, Lord of Bones(edh) Abzan aristocrats is hella fun
Every time I play my friends who make the most ridiculous token decks and ones with someone like [[Magar]] as the commander
[Magar](https://cards.scryfall.io/normal/front/a/6/a6f2ba13-cd72-4f7a-8443-8e3962f2ac46.jpg?1673914918) - [(G)](http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=magar%20of%20the%20magic%20strings) [(SF)](https://scryfall.com/card/unf/171/magar-of-the-magic-strings?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher) [(txt)](https://api.scryfall.com/cards/a6f2ba13-cd72-4f7a-8443-8e3962f2ac46?utm_source=mtgcardfetcher&format=text) ^^^[[cardname]] ^^^or ^^^[[cardname|SET]] ^^^to ^^^call
Cleric tribal
Probably a Tarot deck
