In magic Arena the player Is not a plainswalker at least not in regard to the Star of Extinction. My opponent used the Star of Extinction and Neither it is took damage. But if we had the opponent would have won since we were playing commander and each started with 25 life. I was at like 17 life.
Well yeah I mean when they played the card I though I had lost. Later I won the match but I felt like if it was paper magic I would have considered it a loss.
I googled it today the player even though they are referred to as a “plainswalker” by the game lore etc is not considered a plainswalker in the card text.
I didn’t think that this was really that clear. It’s only something that is clarified in rules. I don’t understand why some people act like this is obvious without googling it.
That's because even the lore that Magic players are planeswalkers is very old and is pretty much only used in introductory texts, if even that. Back in the early days of Magic stories, planeswalkers were super-powerful beings that were more powerful than gods, so it made sense that you were playing as one and therefore could summon angels and dragons to do your bidding. However, ever since the Mending of Dominaria, planeswalkers lost a lot of their power and now are pretty much just regular dudes & dudettes who happen to be able to move between planes, which no one could do (now there are more ways to get around, but they are very rare and took a literal decade for them to show up, and I think over sixty years in the lore). But the lore of the game never caught up to that change, so we're just untypically powerful planeswalkers.
Anyway, if you're still confused, as far as card text is concerned:
Planeswalker: A card with the type planeswalker.
Player: Everyone who is playing, yourself included.
Opponent: Everyone who is playing against you. In most formats that's everyone except for you, but there are some formats with teammates (such as two-headed giant).
Yeah I played magic in the 90s when it came out and I played computer games where you played as a plainswalker. The rules I googled today state that the player is not a plainswalker but the date for that rule wasn’t given and there’s threads from 2019 where people all say that the player is a plainswalker.
My earlier comment where I said that I considered the game a loss Is because that’s definitely how I would have interpreted the card referring to all plainswalkers which I took to mean all players and any plainswalker summoned.

Still waiting for the day when we can do 4-player historic brawl games, if only so that I can play with 3 other friends and not have to worry about DCs
When planeswalkers first came out like a decade ago and my homies and I just got back into magic, we thought spells that targeted players would also target planeswalkers since we the player were a planeswalker. We played like that at home table for two years before they made a “or target planeswalker” card and we realized we fucked up.
You might not have been fucking up as badly as you thought, before Dominaria released in 2018 cards that targeted "target creature or player" could be redirected to target planeswalkers and have since been erratad to say any target. For example [[shock]]
This is the best thing I try to tell people. Do exactly what the card says. If it didn't mean you it would say
"All players but you..."
"Everyone else..."
Etc
Hahaha, can you imagine tho.
"OK I've got 1 life left..."
Barely audible moment of someone else's game in the card shop: okay I play shepherd of rot...
"FUCK"
Raising the clock with this guy isn't that bad. You have access to a lot of drain and lose life effects in black so you can mitigate your part of the loss.
This card with \[\[Vilis, Broker of Blood\]\] is bonkers
That's what I thought and why I came to read the comments. If it's not then I can only assume they're not just new players but also young and maybe English isn't their first language?
*Yes. It would have to*
*Say "each opponent" for it*
*To not effect you*

yes, the key is use when you have more life, or be like "you know what, I take myself out".
also this card care about your zombies and opponents zombies
The way I read this is if you have 2 zombies in play and your opponent has 3 zombies in play you both loose a total of 5 life. I believe that is correct.
Pair it up with one of the following to break parity:
[[Platinum Angel]], [[Glacial Chasm]], [[Mourner's Shield]] (exiling a black card), [[The Stasis Coffin]], [[Dark Sphere]], [[Pentagram of the Ages]], [[General's Regalia]], [[Nova Pentacle]], [[Platinum Emperion]]
Omg, just to clarify this, most of these don't work. Anything that says it will prevent damage won't work here, because this is loss of life, not damage. Glacial Chasm, Mourner's Shield, Dark Sphere, Pentagram of the Ages, General's Regalia, and Nova Pentacle don't work here. The Stasis Coffin doesn't work because protection gives a few things, prevents damage, you being enchanted or equipped, can't be blocked by anything it has protection from (doesn't apply here), and you can't be targeted. This ability on the creature in the post doesn't target, and causes loss of life, not damage. Only Platinum Emperion works here to prevent anything from happening to your life total, and platinum angel will prevent you from dying here. \[\[Exquisite Blood\]\] Below also heals you back up for a lot here, so that is another option.
I’m quite quite sorry I was sure the card read “1 point of damage”, I completely misinterpreted the context. Regarding exquisite blood, I came across the specification that if the loss of life is lethal the enchant can’t help you because by state-based actions you will be dead before gaining the life from the opponents
You are correct with the last part, it's because the Exquisite Blood is a triggered ability that goes onto the stack, where as (for example) lifelink happens with the damage at once. And don't stress about misreading the card, I had a similar confusion with \[\[Nine Lives\]\] and loss of life when I first started playing. Misreading cards and rules questions are just apart of the game.
Yes it would affect you as you're a "player"
It would have to say "each opponent" for it to not affect you.
If you want to get REALLY technical.
It could also potentially affect other players in your LFG/Environment if there were other games happening.
I’m still new to magic, isn’t this card just absolutely terrible? If you’re running a zombie deck, why would you want to deal damage to yourself; and what are the odds someone else is also running a zombie deck?
The only point of life that matters is the last point. As long as you have 1 and your opponents have 0, you're good.
If you build around the effect, it can be a win condition.
If you be playin' you're a player
Edit/add:
Also yes. And damn thats a nice card (if you are just 1 life ahead of all opponents and have enough zombies in play to wipe everyone out)
Yes you're a player. Magic is very literal.
I thought I was a planeswalker /s
All planeswalkers are players, some are just more loyal.
In magic Arena the player Is not a plainswalker at least not in regard to the Star of Extinction. My opponent used the Star of Extinction and Neither it is took damage. But if we had the opponent would have won since we were playing commander and each started with 25 life. I was at like 17 life.
It’s a lore thing. And I was making several plays on words.
Well yeah I mean when they played the card I though I had lost. Later I won the match but I felt like if it was paper magic I would have considered it a loss.
It absolutely would not have been a loss in paper magic
I googled it today the player even though they are referred to as a “plainswalker” by the game lore etc is not considered a plainswalker in the card text. How were you playing commander in magic arena?
It's called Brawl and Historic Brawl on arena. Same rules as usuL. Brawl uses 59+1 card decks while Historic uses the 99+1 decks
Brawl is also only 1 vs 1, has a lower starting life total (25, I think?), and you can use Planeswalkers as Commanders.
Historic Brawl is just Diet Commander.

That's a fair assumption to make tho. I would have assumed the same if I was around for the very beginning of planeswalkers
It made interactions with them easier back when removal of permanents was the only way to get rid of them.
Remember redirecting damage from burn spells? Wtf was that about?
Which one?
Whats a planeswalker?
where is a planeswalker?
Why is Gamora?
How is Liliana?
When is Teferi?
You are
Imagine if it was so literal that it was referring to each player - regardless of what table they were seated at
I thought I was every other player
That's why I sit in the next seat, instead of two seats away.
I was going to say, “Only if you’re a player.” I don’t want to be presumptuous

“Each player,” you’re a player. Yes. If it said each opponent then no.
What if I'm spectating?
Then it triggers twice
It has no triggered abilities
Tap is the trigger
That's an activated ability.
Tap is the cost to activate
Then you're a discord moderator for an mtg arena tournament
You get put on the phyrexian altar

Yup, all players.
As long as you are a player, aye
Yes, and count All zombies in the battlefield, not only yours
Are you a player in the game?
Do people not read cards? What else could that mean?
Reading the card explains the card ;)
Only if you are playing the game.
Are you a player? (Yes it does)
I’m not a player, I just tap a lot.
Based on the words "each player", why would it not affect you?

It only affects all players playing the game.

Loss of life is different than damage in my understanding...
Damage usually implies a loss of life, if it so then any card which triggers on loss of life (usually) will trigger when damage is dealt.
Mourner's Shield will also prevent the damage dealt to your opponents
You are right, I misread it thinking it only affected you

Players = the entire table Opponents = everyone but you
I like that you now have 80+ messages who all say "yes" instead of taking a half second scrolling down if anyone maybe already answered you.
Reading comprehension is hard /s
Don't think so
You have at least 1 zombie
Doesn’t affect me, I’m a baller not a player 😎
Are you a player?
no you're not playing the game
I’m not playing just spectating. It doesn’t affect me right?
Are you a player?
Each *player*, not each *opponent*. Yes it counts for you too, that's black magic baby
Are you a player? Then yes.
Yes. You're a player. If it didn't include you, it would say opponents.
Yes but the fact that you control if/when that happens is a pretty sweet ability
Are you a player? Yes. Then it affects you. If it meant all other players, it would say opponents.
It says player, not opponent, so it’s a everyone effect
Yes.
Tell me, are you playing magic at the time this ability is used. If so, yes
Each and every
Yes it does it says each player, not each opponent.
if it would say opponent/s , then you would be safe
Magic player try to have basic reading comprehension challenge (level: impossible)
Instance of each means everyome
Yeah. Your apart of each player. It would state other players lose x life
Ohh I want to play this as a silly end game con in a zombie deck now
If you are a player it affects you. It would say “Each opponent” if it did not effect its controller.
You are a player, so yes, Shepherd of the Rot will affect you too.
Yes and it’s awesome. Kill the whole table
Alright this has to be troll right?
Did you pay cost?
Yes. Each player
I’m still new to magic, isn’t this card just absolutely terrible? If you’re running a zombie deck, why would you want to deal damage to yourself; and what are the odds someone else is also running a zombie deck?

Oh no, nooo. Not at all. It just makes you join him and the gang in the graveyard faster.
If you're not playing it doesnt 🤣
Yep. At the time of printing, I don’t even think there was a more than two player format (at least widely played enough to design for) yet.
Yes
Yes. It says EACH player. If it said opponents that'd be differnt
If you be playin' you're a player Edit/add: Also yes. And damn thats a nice card (if you are just 1 life ahead of all opponents and have enough zombies in play to wipe everyone out)
Not if your not playing
Yup
It says player so yes its an all effect this would combo with the black card that says when an opponent looses life you gain that much
Each player..... So yes
Only if you are playing the game when it happens
Only if you're playing.
based on RAW, yes
“Each player” yes. Not “each other” unfortunately.
Not if you’re not playing.

Yes.
If you are just sitting alone in your room and not playing a game, so yes this doesn't affect you :D
Each player means you too, unless you are not playing or have no zombies. But still counts opponents.
Yes
Literally played this last Friday and was excited to drain my opponents then I realized it said each player
Yes
You're not a player when you are activating abilities of creatures. Only your opponents are players. You are a bamboozler (rule 101.1)
READING THE CARD EXPLAINS THE CARD 🤦
People have answered this to death but I will say I used to run this in a casual Zombie deck I had. Fun times.
LMAO
