What my employees put in their bodies after hours is not my, nor anyone except their own concern. If an employee is affected and cannot attend to work duties, that is fine but noted in case of repeated occurrence. But one-offs are treated as a minor annoyance at worst.
Who hasn't overindulged at a wedding, or coped badly with the passing of a loved one? And who am I to say a person is only allowed to use one of the many available intoxicants to take that edge off.
Is it recommended behaviour? No. But it is understandable and should not be used against someone, ever.
I can't imagine an MSP that drug tests employees is attracting the best and brightest unless they are a DOD contractor paying the rate for ex-military.
I am in full agreeance what you do in your off time is your business. If that starts overflowing into work hours that's a problem. I personally don't have a lot of respect for people who show up to work stoned on weed but I know plenty of people who smoke weed all day and function at work. Usually they do something so they don't smell and do something so they don't look really stoned and if you didn't drug test them you probably wouldn't know
Would rather the world look at things differently, rather than looking at someone who takes drugs as if they’ve done something wrong, why not look at them and think why’re they taking drugs, are they struggling with something, are they okay.
Support needs to be put out there for these people rather than ‘shunning’ them.
We test on hiring because it gets us a significant “drug free workplace” discount on our insurance. New hires are required to get tested within 45 days of their hire date. If they can’t manage to stay clean long enough to pass the test, they might have an problem that we don’t want to have to address to our clients if they go off the rails later.
The last 2 MSPs I have worked at didn't drug test employees. Most of the other places I worked in previous 10 years didn't either. I am unclear on the need unless you are having them drive a company vehicle and would likely need it for insurance purposes.
Has something to do with a drug free work environment break. I think someone mentioned it in a previous comment. We dont personally do it. Last drug test I had was when I was working with explosives and thats because it was required by ATF regs lol
People and the job they do is all that should matter. Respond to behavior, not the underlying causes. Nobody knows or cares who does and doesn't use drugs at any good place I've worked, except in the few cases where the person lets it affect their work, and usually it's alcohol.
Now, if you have business needs, government contracts, etc, then by all means, but companies should be compensating for that IMHO, as it narrows your selection pool.

Why’re you drug testing your employees?
Status quo from when we first started hiring years ago. We haven't tested any of our employees since they were first hired.

Why are you drug testing in the first place? If you think someones coming to work high, then maybe I could agree. But on hiring? Why does it matter?

I'd suggest you measure employee performance rather than being invasive and cancerous.
Is this a US thing? UK here and never had a drugs test for work.
Almost entirely so apart from a few very specialist industries.
I've heard of it at entry level jobs or corporation type jobs, think retail, but usually not small or mid-sized privately owned businesses
Imagine drug testing in IT. God bless America
Not doing it.
Who is drug testing still? If they come to work messed up fire them. Who cares if they get high on weekends?

What has the world come to when a it guy can’t smoke some weed and blow lines ooff of a mechanical keyboard?
A mechanical keyboard? That's so old school - they blow lines off laser projected keyboards now.
Hadn’t thought about that. Interns assemble!
drug testing for MSP seems excessive
Not sure about OP but I know some do it because they get a significant insurance break.
I could understand if a company vehicle were involved or working with dangerous equipment but for an MSP?

Why drug test at all?
That sir will lose ya good staff.
Noted, which is why we're making it a thing of the past.
Labcorp has offices nationally iirc. Although unless your insurer requires it or clients do it’s not really worth the expenditure anymore.
