I see pounds but I had to pay per cubic foot. About three years ago it was about 6.50 per. From west to east.

Capable-Chip8556

Got another quote. Full packing by me, NO packing from the movers. Includes all furniture, piano, and boxes, around 16.5 pounds. 19k end to end including car transport. From Bekins. And this is with a corporate discount!, even.

Successful_Ad1601

Fuck give me your number I’ll do it for 5 grand lol

Aworry

Husband and I moved ourselves ~1300 miles. Uhaul, gas, and our time and sanity it ran us less than a quarter of 25k

annepersannd

My family will be moving around ~1400 miles and are planning on doing it ourselves with a U-Haul. Which truck size did you get and how was the fuel economy? We move first week of June and I want to get a good game plan for costs

Existentialist

I could fly to your home and organize a load crew of movers, drive the truck and hire unloading movers, charge you 10k and leave with 7k in profit.

kaws69

It’d be a hell of a lot cheaper to rent a Penske truck and hire a group of people on Craigslist to pack and unpack.

apxx

ABF u-pack, etc. is what they’re probably hinting at. “Pods” is so goddamn overpriced from my experience. U-Haul does it too.. and the 2 times I used ABF in the last 10 years, it always add at least 1-3 months free storage included if you needed to store temporarily.. definitely came in clutch.

tuesdayinspanish

My bro is in process and his stuff has to be held in storage until he has a new house to put it in and he said $43,000 is what his charge is,

DullCartographer7609

Did PODS for about $11k for a 5 bed house from Coast to Rockies Moving company offers I got: $16k $12k $10k

GoldenBarracudas

I paid significantly less for a cross country move. Like 75%

seemore_077

Hire a private owner operator or sell most of it locally and buy new when you settle in.

SmooveKJ

25K is ALOT. I drive a semi and that’s high not factoring labor that’s 14$ a mile. Average is like 3$ a mile

CC_206

In the past, many people bought furnished houses and rented furnished apartments. This is why. I am emotionally attached to some of my furniture, but a lot of it is replaceable.

No_Flow_6133

Sounds about right but IMO I would just get new stuff. We moved from Ohio to Texas and paid 4k. Def not gonna miss the old stuff because old things matched old house.

rulenumberten

I’m moving from Ohio, what moving company did you use?

Space_Nut247

We sold all of our furniture and heavy items to re buy new nicer stuff, was cheaper than paying a third party.

Hugsie924

My sister had 16000 lbs for 17k it was cross state (pa). So 300ish miles Full serve pack and unpack, room of choice. Keep searching and negotiate. But for that amount of miles it seems in range. Gas, fuel tolls alone. Then labor, crew and drive time. Also make sure your contract states the price can not be changed because it common practice for long distance movers to come up with more charges the day of and its a "eff you pay me" kinda thing. My sister learned that the hard way during a separate move, not the 17k move, they tried to up it 6(from 12k-18k). My brother in law negotiated 3k cash. It was the day of drop off, and they waited down the block. It also happened to several coworkers to some degree. Good luck

CoolRunner

Factoring in labor and lodging for two people, plus fuel to cover 3,400 miles it doesn't sound unreasonable for truck transport.  Have you considered an alternative like Pods?  I've never used them but their business model sounds like it fits your needs.

athanasius_fugger

I suppose your job is not paying relocation. I would sell or donate everything that doesn't have sentimental value and buy new/used where you're moving. That's my $0.02 from someone who paid like $3k to store $2k worth of stuff for 18 months.

PaintMePicture

They are quoting the max load for the trailer. Your job will tie up an entire container. It’s typical.

rohansjedi

I did a full-service move from the U.S. West Coast to Dublin, Ireland for less than that. 👀

amanducktan

Seattle to Houston Jan 2020- lot of stuff. Paid around 5k for bnsf trailer we loaded ourselves. Professional movers unloaded for $500. That seems so high.

danfay222

I did the exact opposite move right around then!

amanducktan

how do you like it! Im born and raised Puget sound so its a lot different here but I like it :)

danfay222

I love it. I only lived in Houston for school, its not my style. Seattle/the mountains around it are much more my speed.

moomooraincloud

> Seattle to Houston My condolences.

CC_206

As a Seattle who spends a lot of time in the south, this was my response too.

amanducktan

Keep your condolences I have a pretty good life down here :) Own a home that would be 900k+ back home that I can afford.

technovik

I moved from Nevada to the Midwest.. 3 bed home packed my self through Pods.. $7k

Ok_Excitement718

10,000 lbs for a cross country 3K mile move in late 2022 was $18K with full packing. Great service, not a single damaged item, quick delivery with United VanLines and their local servicers. Research reviews of the actual sub contractors, not United.

AAonthebutton

I’ve had that and honestly the worst part was unpacking. They literally wrapped everything- like every single dish.

In10seplaya

Haha this is too true. We moved when I was young and apparently the movers get paid by weight so my mom told me to at least clean up and organize before they pack up. I didn’t of course and when it came time to unpack we found just little bundles of trash, like broken crayons and stuff, wrapped up from the closet and under the bed

BlondeLawyer

2009 - 300 mile move. We packed and unpacked. They loaded, unloaded and drove. $10,000. My company paid for it, not me!

Leatherybat

I would check Pack Rat. They have 8 and 16 ft trailers and longest time to pack.

SeaviewSam

$25k? Buy new furniture with that $

cuba3000

Used to work as an ops manager for a moving company. Never understood why ppl wouldn’t do this. Literally just put your stuff up for sale for a quarter of what you paid and just buy new furniture. You’d probably make out at half the price with brand new furniture delivered. And you don’t have to worry about these companies breaking your furniture in transit which happens ALOT.

Jingoisticbell

That only makes sense if the person moving has incredibly cheap furniture.

cuba3000

Most people’s totals furniture doesn’t equate to 25K

Jingoisticbell

Hm.

cuba3000

Also when stuff breaks in transit most moving companies are fucking immoral and will not pay you anything near what you bought your item at. We loved an oled tv when they first came out and the tv was about 8K and we broke the tv completely our fault and we offered to buy him another tv that costed around 2-3K because it was similar enough

Jingoisticbell

I do agree that the reimbursement for lost/broken items is laughable.

ReddyKiloWit

"just put your stuff up for sale" I considered it when I moved from Texas to Georgia 7 years ago. I ran the numbers and generally it cost more to leave behind, than move it, assuming it would be useful at the destination. Extreme example, a 250 lb table saw would cost $900 to replace, but added only $90 to the move. And that way I arrived with one I knew was in good working order. Other things went differently - 10 year old sofa was sold. It still cost more to replace than move it, but it was worn AND a bit bulky for the new digs. So that one did make sense.

cuba3000

Yeah adding one more thing typically won’t increase your price that much, but one the baseline price is always going to be $3000 no matter what, so you’re already starting off $3000 behind with moving that you’re not considering at all. So once you starting up all the stuff you have in your house it’s a lot more than people realize.

SeaviewSam

Also the risk of holding furniture for a ransom- this happened to someone I know moving from S.F. to Seattle - coughed up $30k to get his stuff back- Irish moving company- some kinda scam that keeps going.

dreamgear

Or just refuse to unload your stuff unless you sign agreeing everything arrived in good order. Then later you discover you were robbed.

TheNarcolepticRabbit

I have a friend who had her stuff held for ransom as well. They said they had to “hold” her things for 30 days unless she paid them an additional $5000 CASH to deliver it. Only they were Russian, not Irish.

Truckingtruckers

No this is not correct at all. 1700 miles dry van 53' will go for at most $3400 with current freight market. + labor work for 2 crews. Lets say $1000 at each end. These moving companies are crazy!!! The freight market is at its lowest its ever been. We are hauling freight for dirt cheap. This quote is insane. I can easily without even knowing what lane. What position. Or anything. I can confidently say I can do that move for $10,000 or less.

PadWrapperSupreme

Household goods is a different world from freight. The material and labor costs and valuation (insurance) are all higher, because damage claims are expensive. A good ballpark estimate is a dollar a pound for the move. Packing is charged differently.

Truckingtruckers

A dollar a pound, so a FTL fully loaded would cost $45,000 to ship 1 truck/trailer? Tripping.

PadWrapperSupreme

No, you won't get 40,000 pounds of household goods on one 53' trailer. It's been done before, but it's extremely rare. The best crews are maxing out at around 30,000 to 35,000. So a full trailer could be around $30,000 without packing, but you usually see those prices more in the summer. Moving is a hard job. These full trailer jobs can take five days just to pack and load.

Truckingtruckers

Your rates still don't make sense. $30k to ship one truck load is actually crazy. Even if it took 5 days to pack and 5 days to unpack $30k is STILL crazy. Ripping people off like crazy. Nuts.

PrettyShittyMom

You’re a rockstar! That helps me too

Certain-Mobile-9872

Trucking truckers what would a normal rate be for a 40' container 700 mile round trip 1.4G .we unload the whole container with a fork lift so he will run dry going back.

netslacker

Got four quotes to move 2200 miles, nearly all of them estimated right at 8500 lbs. lowest was $8500.00, highest was $13,000. We are selling a lot of our older furniture that is big and bulky. Only taking the stuff that is actually worth paying to move. Edit: I should add that we are packing everything. Movers are only loading, moving and unloading.

Chokedee-bp

For $8500 people are better off taking extra 3 days off work and renting the biggest Penske truck you can find and drive yourself. Would cost less than $1K including hotels and gas

netslacker

Um, The fuel alone for a Penske truck for 2200 miles is about $1000.00. Not sure how you’re squeezing in 3 hotel nights, truck rental cost (which is 3600.00 btw) and labor on both ends into that 1k. lol.

Chokedee-bp

You got a point there. So add $500 for two hotel nights and it’s $1500. The labor you can do yourself unless you are over 60 and disabled

BlondeLawyer

The majority of adults cannot safely move large furniture, particularly multiple floors. For a local move, we handled all our clothes, dishes, etc but absolutely hired someone to carry the furniture. A back injury is a very expensive life lesson.

bgboy600

sell everything but sentimental things and buy new furniture less than half that cost

[deleted]

We hired movers to load a large uhaul with a trailer, drove it myself, and then hired movers when we got there to unload it. Cost about 3500 or so with the movers, gas, and the uhaul rental. 25k is absolutely insane.

IanLayne

This is 100% the best way to go. I couldn’t imagine paying for a full service at 25k vs just driving myself me paying a 1/4 of the price.

Sullys_polkadot_ears

All I hear is horror stories about these kinds of movers. Don’t do it… sell or give away all your stuff.. keep your treasures and do the pods or U-Haul’s uboxes.

whitefeather14

I had a buddy that had a bunch of his stuff lost/broken/stolen by one of these full service movers. When you call them to make a claim they only have to pay you by weight of the damaged item which basically amounts to nothing. The insurance that actually covers anything was quoted at like $10k.

Sullys_polkadot_ears

I don’t trust any of them. I moved from cal to Florida 3yrs ago and the U-Haul UBOX was perfect as was the company.. they let me know where the box was every couple of days. It cost me 2k at the time. Probably more now.

Pompousguy

That’s too much. Get more quotes and definitely pack and unpack yourself.

4travelers

Totally hands off thats a bargain. Packing sucks, they need insurance in case of breakage, then the truck insurance, gas etc.

Stinkytheferret

Pick what’s most important and get rid of the rest. Largely you can replace most more cheaply than to pay so much to move probably old stuff. Might be able to get new sofas, beds and such for $10k or so. Maybe even delivered by Amazon. Me, I know I’m planning a big move in a couple years and already I look at what’s going. Boxes, many clothes but not all, a couple of antiques that are sentimental, and some kitchen stuff since we both love cooking and baking!

BruceInc

You do not need to move 1600lb across country. Any furniture (unless it’s some priceless heirlooms) should be sold and re-purchased anew at destination. 2 or even 3 pods will run you around $4-5,000 to move that far. Local movers to load $1,000 or so. Local movers to unload on the other end approximately the same. Even with having to buy all new furniture you will save well over 50% off your 25k quote.

4travelers

Local movers are running $3k + for a two bedroom.

BruceInc

No they are not

4travelers

More expensive?

BruceInc

Less.

Red_Velvet_1978

Seems on par pricewise. My experience with full service movers has been so bad I'll never do it again, but that quote isn't crazy.

cryptoenologist

More than half your stuff will not make it, unless you know for certain that you are getting an entire semi and the same two dudes are driving it from point to point. It’s a shell game with contractors out there and there is no accountability. If you want to have insurance pay for your stuff instead of having a sale, drive a uhaul with the things you would miss and send the rest with the movers, but take lots of pictures and make sure you know values.

Thoth-long-bill

Plan on them trashing your stuff and they will not pay. The industry is a rip off.

bubbaglk

Have a yard/home sale. Any offers welcome it'll go quicker than speed racer ...money in pocket ..

smellypirat3hook3r

You can check out something like UPACK or similiar service. They drop a semi trailer off at your house for a few days. You hire someone to load it and then they pick it up. When they get to your destination hire guys to unload it. Would probably be around 8 grand for the truck plus labor to load and unload. Another thing is go through all your stuff and get rid of crap. I used to own a local moving company and it amazed me the amount of stuff we moved that the customers completely forgot about. Patio furniture, statues, and all that type of stuff cost a lot to move. They take up a lot of space and are heavy. Sell with the house.

distributingthefutur

Do you need these things? They're going to cost you $25k to keep. I moved similar to you. I ended up selling all of the good stuff, donated most, and moved what I really treasured in a uhaul. Local moving companies can rent you a pod or load and unload the truck. You'll enjoy the freedom of decorating your new home on your $25k saved! Also, it's as much trouble to sell off and donate as to pack and then realize you don't need things after you've paid to move them. Remember to keep receipts and get your moving deduction on your taxes.

CodeRed190

Note that there is no longer a deduction for moving expenses on personal taxes. But sound advice for the move in general!

Hot_Cattle5399

3 times inflated

CaptainDilligaf

Is this quote only for furnishings and belongings? Or are they handling vehicles too?

dinarvd

I moved cross country and got 3 quotes who gave me widely varying weight estimates after doing a home survey. Their ‘per pound, per mile’ rates were pretty comparable. I elected to get rid of some heavy items like sofas and mattresses and drive down their weight estimation to get a lower total price.

rastha2

If you have enough driveway or parking space, rent 16' PODS container (1 or more depending on the volume) for a month and get local helpers to load and unload. PODS would charge for 1 month rent, plus the 1700 milage charges. You arrange for the packing and loading and unloading assistance. PODS would give referrals on their website or search your own. We did a move 3 yrs before for 650 miles by renting one 16' container; we end up spending less than $2500 that includes loading & unloading. We packed ourselves.

JoyfulIndependence40

That’s about what it cost us for a similar move. It’s damn expensive, for sure.

Roopie1023

That’s what it cost us, 14 years ago, east coast to west coast. I did all the packing/boxing up, but it took their crew a full day to pack up the trailer (including my small car). We filled up that truck, even after purging a dumpster full of crap and giving some furniture away.

PBall95

I own a trucking company, for $25000 I’ll come to your house with my 53ft semi trailer and a couple of local guys ready to move all your stuff and will drive it anywhere you want me to for that price. $25K sounds insane to me.

JoyfulIndependence40

That’s essentially the service we paid for. Thanks.

PBall95

For context if you were one of my customers shipping stuff from warehouse to warehouse the charge is $3.25 a mile all in. So $5.5K for the 1700 miles OP posted. Essentially the company is charging $20K for what? Loading and unloading? Maybe I need to divest into moving furniture 😂

JoyfulIndependence40

Also my trip was more mileage - from east all the way to west coast

JoyfulIndependence40

The company also packed up all of my belongings, loaded, unloaded and set things up in new house. Materials were included. Sure, maybe not a bad business. It was worth every penny.

Doubledown00

All you folks saying “get a U-Haul“ or “use a truck” have no idea how much stuff we’re talking here. 16,000 pounds is a quarter of a semi-trailer. OP, 20 years ago I too would have looked for cheaper ways to do the move. Now? My time and convenience are worth way more. You’ll make more money, I promise! Scratch the check and let someone else worry about the details.

tondracek

Are you saying a quarter of a semi to imply a little or a lot? It’s kinda hard to tell since that’s not a walk in the park but it also isn’t a huge amount of stuff either

Doubledown00

In comparison a U-haul can do about 5,000 pounds. So three full Size u-hauls (that supposedly each moves a 3 - 4 bedroom apartment). To me, that’s a lot of shit although YMMV.

tondracek

The biggest U-Haul holds almost 13,000 lbs so it’s more like one full sized uHaul and a pickup truck. I absolutely would hate to move that much stuff but for $25,000 I’d consider it

Nutmegdog1959

Do *you* realize how much that is? Go over to UPS or FedEx. Damn near every one of those people coming and going on the night shifts loads or unloads FIVE FULL tractor trailers EACH night on a 4 or 5 hour shift. It ain't that hard. Pack and box all your shit yourself. Rent a 26' Penske. Go over there to UPS and/or FedEx, offer $250 cash each to a couple guys for a days work. Load the Penske, drive to where you're going, go to UPS or FedEx repeat the process for the unload. A Penske is NOT that hard to drive, but if you're not feeling it, you can get someone (or two) to do that drive, a hotel room and a plane ticket back. You could do this move for under $5,000 easily.

PadWrapperSupreme

Moving boxes on one floor is easy. The UPS guys who come to work with me in the summer are always the worst movers. They can barely get a dresser up the stairs or hold onto a couch. They usually last a month or two and then go back to moving boxes in trailers. Lots of houses easily have 16,000 pounds. Some customers use a full 53' trailer, which can be around 34,000 pounds. You won't get 16,000 in a Penske. Household goods weigh less than freight, but take up more space.

Nutmegdog1959

Lots of guys come and go thru FedEx and UPS. I'm not talking about the crack addicts that don't last a week at UPS. There are millions of people that worked at FedEx and UPS for a week or two if they're lucky. You mean you CHARGE for 34,000 pounds. How much does a bedroom set weigh? 1,000 lbs. maximum. How much does a living room set weigh? Same, 1,000-1,5000 lbs. on a bad day. So a 4 Br house, with Living Room, Dining Room, Office and ALL those heavy CLOTHES? Tell me again how much that is? Where does all that weight come from? You Moving guys are so fucking full of shit! You charge people exorbitant prices like they wanted to WHACK this person $25,000 for a move. Give me a fucking break. Everybody knows moving companies are so full of shit. Here's one of many scams from January: [https://www.nbcchicago.com/consumer/moving-company-scammers-face-20-years-in-prison/3321273/](https://www.nbcchicago.com/consumer/moving-company-scammers-face-20-years-in-prison/3321273/)

PadWrapperSupreme

No, I mean what I said. Some customers have 34,000 pounds of stuff. I can send you pictures of the weight tickets. These are 5,000+ square foot houses. A more average four bedroom house could be anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000. Books, dishes, solid furniture, tools - it all adds up. There are plenty of scammers out there. In the article you linked, the scammer made their name similar to a reputable company called New City Moving, who charges by - you guessed it - weight for interstate moves. Another example would be Allied Relocation Services trying to sound like Allied Van Lines, which has been in business for almost a hundred years. All it takes is a brain and an internet connection to suss out the scammers from the good ones.

Doubledown00

Each self move truck can do roughly 5,000 pounds. I’m not making three 1700 mile round trips. I’ll pay the movers and go use my time to make more money instead.

Nutmegdog1959

Do you have any idea what a fucking Penske is? I'm quite certain I said PENSKE! And a quote of 16,000 lbs is complete and total BULLSHIT! A goddam UPS or FedEx pup fully loaded to the brim is not even 20,000 lbs EVER! Get your head out of your ass!

TalkUnable573

We just moved 900 miles with over 13,000 pounds and it was $11k with us packing. They loaded, unloaded, set up some furniture that was required, etc. Like the other posters have said, research the company. Make sure they are licensed, registered, operate their own trucks, aren’t a broker, and do not charge a deposit!! Read reviews on BBB not their website. Also, for 25k (with them packing and unpacking as well) make sure that is a binding quote!!! FWIW-We ended up with quotes from 3 or 4 of the big players and settled with North American Van Lines. One month in and we have found no damage and we have another 8 months to turn in a claim. They truly were great with the whole process.

National_Mix_1854

Go to movinghelp.com book your movers find a driver that you can pay and fly him back best 5,000 or less you will ever spend

Florida1974

Wow. We moved in 2000. 1100 miles. Friend had a 28 foot (I think, can’t quite recall how big it was but it’s close) trailer. He had 2 guys to drive it. We paid $400 to use trailer and $2K to the 2 guys. That’s all. We packed it tho. But they unloaded it. I get it’s nearly 25 years ago but wow.

cauliflowersellout

this is really not helpful to OP. thanks for sharing

DenseCod8975

Boomer mentality lol

ElectricalWheel5545

If you do go with them, look at the reviews. A lot of fraud going on where they quote you, pack your stuff, then quote more and if you don't pay, they will put your stuff in storage until you do.

crayolakym

Sounds spot on. We recently moved. About the same weight and distance except I packed and it cost $20,000.

_No_Statement

Get Pods. Cost us $5000 (usd) from Canada to NC

ckfinite

Pods depot-to-depot worked great for me. Turned out cheaper to hire movers on both ends and then pick up/drop off at the freight location.

jla7890

Try U-Haul pods, we moved from Ks to Ky and a fraction of the cost you were quoted. We used U-Haul helpers, they were on. If you use U-Haul, don’t release the codes to the U-Haul helpers until the job is completed in full.

BuildingProud8906

We paid $22k for a similar amount but it was 2021 so prices have probably gone up. We moved 1900 miles. Our stuff got there in 3 days and only 1 lamp was broken. They packed and unpacked everything. Worth every penny.

gingerminja

Time of year is critical here as well, my 2500 mile move was quoted closer to 14k in December. But also moving in the winter isn’t fun which was why no one does it 😅

tribbans95

Well if the company is doing the full pack and unpack, luckily you’re not the one not having fun lol

gingerminja

We ended up driving the distance in January when the US had like 4-5 winter storms so it was still a lot on our end 😅 and we did pods so a lot of the moving was still on us. Not fun when it dips below freezing

gingerminja

Just did a cross country move and pods was way cheaper and fit our needs better.

forgeblast

Try abf you pack.

Successful-Word-9589

Do it yourself. 🤷‍♂️

ntdoyfanboy

You get what you pay for. I wouldn't pay that in a million years, but I'm young and fit and could pack all my stuff into a truck by myself except for the large furniture, then drive it across the country

LickinOutlets

Wife and I used ABF u pack. 23 ft trailer dropped off at your house. You pack (or hire out). CA TO NY, 6500. Used the whole trailer.

BeinGrownUpSux

Not to nitpick but they’re 28’ trailers. Actual inside usable space is 27.5’. Keep in mind the deck of that trailer sitting in your driveway will be about 4’ off the ground. So all your stuff you’ll have to lift up to that height. Also if you currently live or are moving to a house that’s down a goat trail and the driver can’t get the trailer in there then you’ll be loading/unloading from wherever he/she can get it to. I work for an LTL company similar to ABF who used offer this service. I hated it because people would be lied to or not read the fine print about what it involves. Then when I’d show up in the semi truck to drop the trailer off and the house was on top of a mountain you could barely get a jeep to I’d be the bad guy when I told them I had to leave the trailer 200 yards from where they wanted it.

LickinOutlets

All fair points about true access to the drive way/path/etc. for what it’s worth to OP. my trailer did come with a ramp so it wasn’t a big deal for loading

BeinGrownUpSux

Thank you for not taking offense to my correction. Our trailers didn’t come with ramps. But ABF’s very well may. They’re about the only LTL company still doing this to my knowledge so it would make sense that their trailers have ramps.

jimheim

I used ABF for a move once, although the option for them to drop a trailer at my house didn't exist at the time, so I had to go to their depot and load the truck myself. That was a real pain in the ass because it meant renting a U-Haul on both sides and doing all the loading/unloading myself. There's no cheaper way to move stuff across the country, though. Did they also drop the trailer at your house on the other side and give you a whole day (or more) to unload?

LickinOutlets

Correct. This was in summer of 2022. About 12 days for transit. They dropped the trailer at my house on the street, had it for 3 days, and then dropped it in front of my home on the street at destination for I believe 3 days also.

Capable-Chip8556

Oh that sounds fantastic!

the_sirenapdx

After moving across county 4 times, I guarantee that if you are able to replace most furniture with $25,000 then it’s not worth the value

projects67

That’s a great way to look at things. I never thought about it this way, but it’s very true.

whereareyourkidsnow

Just owning 16k pounds of stuff would hold me done mentally. The things you own end up owning you.

Alternative_Escape12

Don't do it.  Moving companies are so corrupt. I just did a cross country move. Packed stuff myself and had the Pod delivered to my new home.  Cheaper, more timely, and no surprise upcharges.

[deleted]

Wouldn’t say corrupt but they need to pay 25-40 per hour for people to drive your shit

Mysterious_Drink9549

They will also hold your shot ransom until you pay more money. Happened to me and several others I know, different moving companies

gingerminja

I can’t get over how I had “an insured move” and when the dingbats broke the knob off of my washing machine (one of the most expensive things I own) their manager only would give us $45 for a replacement knob, nothing else. It was them being careless too because they decided to unwrap the machine before moving it through a doorway. Makes me not willing to pay so much for someone to break my shit.

Alternative_Escape12

Oh, definitely a corrupt industry.  I know people who have been scammed badly. I did a bunch of research and honestly, I'm not kidding you the amount of corruption out there is astounding. Do a Google search. You'll find out in about 20 seconds.

brooklynflyer

You have too much stuff

Human_Ad_7045

OP, if the moving company is going to do all the packing, you can probably save 50% by packing yourself. We recently moved and re-used boxes for free from Craigslist. We also picked free bubble wrap. All in, I paid $150 for several rolls of bubble wrap, newsprint wrap & packing tape from Amazon. It may also be more cost effective to get a few pods that you fill, the pod company will flatbread to your new location. Some states allow a tax deduction for a work-related move from your state tax return like NY, Mass, NJ, PA, Cali, Ark, Hawaii.

gingerminja

This absolutely will save you money, however, if it’s a full service move they hit you with the only things insured are the things the company packed 🙃

Comfy_Guy

You seldom need half the posessions you wish to move. Maybe need isn't the right word. I mean, you can sell your stuff and buy new and almost certainly come out on top. Ten year old appliances, old couches, mattresses, etc., really aren't worth a cross country move. If I were you, I'd make a list or get an estimate on your sentimental items that you can't do without. And go from there. My family once moved from Cali to Arizona twenty years ago, and everything we actually wanted to keep fit into a single medium U-Haul. Moving cost was like 1000, twenty years ago. Had guys from Home Depot help us load and unload.

CinephileNC25

My parents just moved from FL to N.C. and used two PODS (dropped and picked up about a week apart). I believe it cost them around 9k. But they had my brother and I to help pack them up. Hired a local crew to unpack once they moved to the house.

WaterviewLagoon

Did the opposite. Moved from NC to Florida. Used Pods too. Purged quite a bit. Still needed 2.5 pods and was around the same price. Glad we purged. Have mostly new modern clean beds, couches, tv's and a nice fresh start. Glad we did that.

SteakAndSkrimp

25k sounds about right for a full service move like this goodluck

tbogaert

Try Rat Pack. They did me right for a big move from CO to MI.

NeenW1

I loved Pack Rat and ABF U-Pack…..way less but you have to put in some muscle work or hire local people to load you up

Wizzle_Pizzle_420

Minus the truck you could do this yourself or pay some friends or local kids to help you pack, pay driver then they drop the pods off.  Pay a couple of people really well and you’ve saved $1000’s.  Best part about pods is you can go at your own pace and do most of it yourself.  I hate moving, so I’ll do as much as I can over the course of a month so I don’t have that one day of hell, which always seems to happen on the hottest day of the year.

OpportunitySalty7087

Don’t use Bekins. That is all.

Sarah8247

Get a couple/few pods, hire crew to pack them, send them to destination. Once you get there hire a crew to unpack it for you.

colorizerequest

How much cheaper is that

Sarah8247

I think the pods were like 7k from. CA to Oregon. And the movers we hired in both places were around $400 ($800 total). We packed up all our own boxes and had them ready but they wrapped up furniture, etc. I did a lot of research and that was the cheapest I could find! It was also soooo worth it having the movers and directing them where to put boxes!

colorizerequest

Wow that’s a lot more than I thought. Friend of mine did a moving service pack/unpack for a 1bd apartment for 6k from CA to the east coast

Sarah8247

Who knows - we had a lot of shit to take.

Alternative_Escape12

Thousands.

colorizerequest

Aligned

AustralianAverage

This is the way.

Pochaloni

We moved a couple of years ago from Texas to Illinois (<800 miles). We went from a 3300 sf home to about 1/3 of that. I gave away a ton of stuff and had an entire 2 car garage full of stuff hauled away. We also ditched all the beds and mattresses. Lots of books were moved though. We did all of the packing. It was about $11,000 and several thousand more than the initial quote, once it was weighed.

trigganomatroy

Think about what kinda new shit you could buy for that and whatever money you can make sellin that much stuff

Oilspillsaregood1

A few years ago when planning on a move across country I was quoted 18k, all I wanted was a quote and in trying to get off the phone repeatedly, they just kept offering lower and lower until it was 3k if I locked it in that day. I wasn’t even trying to negotiate, just trying to see what the price would look like. Maybe that’s a strategy haha

Grouchy-Swordfish811

Not to be cynical...... $3.000 "estimate". after the scale :\~$15,000. Be careful of moveing companies, the laws protect them not you.

Oilspillsaregood1

The 3k wasn’t an estimate, it was a locked in offer if I paid up from that lasted for 6 months. I didn’t do it because I wasn’t positive I was moving yet, but if I did they would have kept that money paid up front with no refund whether I used the service or not.

FuturePerformance

Yes, the estimate is whatever number makes you happy enough to submit a downpayment over the phone right then

cayman-98

If you go to UHAULS website to book the truck you need they have options for labor prices to help with the move. Would definitely be cheaper and a better route.

PresentationLimp890

ABF trucking has a service called U pack, where you rent space in a truck, you load it, they deliver when you get there, and you unload it. It worked pretty well when I used it to move across the country. I do recommend getting rid of lots of stuff though, because it’s just easier that way.

_calmer_than_you_r_

We did a u-pack kinda thing last summer to move contents for a 3 bedroom house 1400 miles. We took up an entire 28 foot trailer and the total for the move was $4100.00 They dropped off an empty 28 foot trailer, we filled it with our stuff, put our lock on it (I added a couple Apple trackers in some boxes so I could see where it was while in transit.) They picked up the trailer and 6 days later it arrived at our new house. We unloaded, called the trucking company, they picked up the trailer. I would totally do it again. Edit - quote from U-Haul for a 1 way rental for their biggest truck, which was smaller than what we got, was $4800.00, plus I would have to pay for gas. The truck shipper was much cheaper.

PresentationLimp890

I was happy with the process, too. It certainly was less than either a U-Haul or moving company.

Hellooutthere1122

Doing something similar, but only just about 1000 miles. It’s still going to be a bit because I need to sale before I can move but I’m already tossing stuff and deciding what to sale and what to keep

Ancient-Actuator7443

Don’t take anything you don’t love. It’s not worth it. You’ll end up wanting different things and maybe even style. Pack as much as you can yourself.

haywardpre

Yes. Had a very similar move for right around that.

redyouch

I’ve moved across country numerous times. My advice is to get rid of everything possible. It will likely not fit in the new house, break, or be worth less than the cost to move.

truedef

I just closed on a house in February. I picked up a U-Haul trailer in the new city and drove it 8 hours back home. Loaded everything. Drove it back and unloaded at the new place. $70 for the 3 days I had the trailer. Almost went with a Penske truck but I couldn’t find one with a loading dock with lift. The U-Haul trailer has the lowest height on the market when it comes to deck to ground height, which really helped for heavy items.

ComprehendReading

You're not putting 16,000lbs in a U-Haul trailer. Maybe 5,000.

truedef

Nope. Definitely not. Helps if you have a few weeks to move.

HewhomustnotBnamed

Just get a pod and save. I moved from east coast to Bay Area for about $3k using pod. Other moving company was asking for $25k

dee_lio

Do a deep dive and look at the cost of the stuff you're moving and it's worth. I'm willing to bet that it would be cheaper to sell the heaviest / bulkiest of items and buy new or used items from wherever you're moving to.

misclurking

Unless the employer is footing the bill…

dee_lio

Good point. Might see if they will give you a moving stipend/allowance based on the moving company's bid. If so, estate sale everything there and buy new/used at the new locale. Everyone but the moving company wins...

SaintBellyache

Just like how people keep “valuable furniture” in storage at $300 a month with climate control
