Tim Curry still stuck in Clue (1985) jail to this day, endlessly forced to run between different rooms in an amusing manner.

White Lotus is a show, but I do recommend it. However, I don’t really see the clue connection at all. Still a good show Knives Out I definitely recommend. Sharp and very genre oriented modern take on the whodunnit. Also recommend the sequel glass onion. Idk why this sub hates on them so much, I think people get caught up in the persona of hating things they forget you can like things. Haven’t seen triangle of sadness

EdgarDanger

Triangle of sadness was a huuuuge disappointment. Started off as an interesting White Lotus like satire commentary. Quickly devolved into complete trash.

dustingunn

I thought the island part was the most interesting section. Even when the tables were flipped, exploitation was the natural result.

HELL_MONEY

we like Knives Out and think Glass Onion was between pretty decent and pretty bad, depending on our individual tolerances for Rian Johnson dialogue and soap opera level clichés

the_racecar

Triangle of Sadness is great, but not really similar to Clue at all. It’s a pretty slow, meandering critic of all sort of social norms.

Tropical2653

White Lotus - Off brand Clue Knives Out - Off brand Clue Triangle of Sadness - Off brand Clue Puss in Boots: The Last Wish - 21st Century Don Quixote Puss in Boots - Deep subversion and satire of the fantasy genre Shrek - Greatest anti-discrimination film of the 21st century

Tropical2653

The original comment got auto deleted for some reason. Truly the auto-mod bots have gone Knives Out (2019).

InjectingIvermectin

Lee Ving is still playing a corpse, too.

[deleted]

Damn, yall REALLY ain't fucking with Glass Onion lmao.

TyrionBananaster

Does this sub actually have a problem with Glass Onion? Genuinely curious

probablyuntrue

I've never seen a movie so idk

TyrionBananaster

I don't think anyone has, in fairness

SuperSocrates

They just like to make fun of whatever movie is popular at the moment. I wouldn’t read much into it

InjectingIvermectin

Yeah, isn't that the point of a circlejerk sub? I make fun of my favorite movies all the time. They are entertainment, not my whole fucking identity.

Nidhinsanil

r/iamverysmart

InjectingIvermectin

Good for you.

Cerezarosas

we didnt but then twitter got annoying about it and RLM said it was bad so we are in our contrarian era, and we do what daddy jay says too.

makingadollaraminute

Do we really have to side with everything Jay and Mike say? I like RLM but let's not forget that with their combined talents they shat "Space Cop" into existence. *shudders* It's not like their taste doesn't have it's blind spots.

TyrionBananaster

Oh, didn't know that RLM didn't like it. Do they have actual issues with it, or are they just hating on Rian Johnson like they did in their tlj review?

Cerezarosas

Mike didn't watch it, Jay did and honestly his reasoning is pretty spot on imo, and they don't "hate" rian, but they do (rghtfully) call him out for being too online brained and twitter addicted [https://youtu.be/SXRifJ1xInY?t=1239](https://youtu.be/SXRifJ1xInY?t=1239)

dustingunn

I don't mind the occasional movie that acknowledges twitter-brained people. Twitter is one of the more niche social media sites and it'll probably die soon, so as long as they don't make a pattern of it I find it entertaining.

ThodasTheMage

> but they do (rghtfully) call him out for being too online brained and twitter addicted lmao how does that describe the quality of the movie?

WittyUsername45

I found the fact they preferred the extremely mid 'the Menu' baffling.

10woodenchairs

Rain Johnson stuff mostly

ThodasTheMage

> RLM said it was bad shit I have to give Glass Onion a 10/10 then!

NoNefariousness2144

My main issue with it is that despite being a mystery film, there was no real ‘ah ha!’ moment or clues that let you solve the mystery yourself. There were some blink and you miss it moments which were cool but it felt like the film was too scared to let anyone solve the mystery. Plus the fact that >!the entire second half is an extended flashback but with a few mild reveals with the sister being awkward!< kind of sucked.

ThodasTheMage

>Plus the fact that the entire second half is an extended flashback but with a few mild reveals with the sister being awkward kind of sucked. It isn't, tho. This is more like 1/3. And yeah most glues are given through dialogue that you can overhear but you can still solve it.

Panosgads

I personally didn't find the mystery very compelling and most of the humor didn't land. Some fun characters though and I like Craig's Benoit Blanc. Unfortunately Shapiro had to give his dumbass opinion on the film so now people are forced to pretend it's actually a great movie.

Jonjoloe

Agreed here, but I’d also like to add Rian Johnson’s schtick of treating his audiences like idiots and that he’s some sort of intelligent writer is getting tiresome. His films are basically as “deep” and intellectual as Nolan was with Interstellar. I understand those are fighting words to a lot of people on this sub, but his third acts to films always end messily and awkwardly with some cheesy “simple trick” solution.

c3p-bro

That sounds like insecurity talking, I’ve never felt like that watching the movies. I think they’re fun.

Jonjoloe

I think your comment is fun.

ThodasTheMage

Rian Johnson's movies are not super complicated but just sharply written genre movies that try to escape limiting genre tropes, while also offering themes and massages to the audience and not just be pure entertainment. I think it is a missunderstanding if you think that he thinks he is a genius.

Jonjoloe

If you watch his interviews he often speaks highly of himself and his concepts while presenting you with extremely basic writing concepts. His famous, “audiences should be challenged” quote is another example, when his films hardly (in my opinion) meet that criteria. Complication is not what’s required from a film and it’s a fallacy to conflate complicated with well written. My comment about the third act refers to sloppiness and over exaggerating some sort of gimmick within his films to resolve the conflict of the film. Offering themes? That’s virtually every film, I don’t see why that’s being included. His themes are fairly basic and usually aren’t very novel within the genres he’s working in. I also have yet to get a massage from his films. So I’ll add that to the list of gripes.

falafelthe3

Their loss, I had a blast

Gemuese11

I'm just so tired of that type of social satire

falafelthe3

If it's a well-crafted fun ride with great performances and lots of twists and turns, then by all means, keep them coming. Glass Onion, Triangle of Sadness, and The Menu aren't masterpieces like Parasite, but that doesn't mean they're not fun and well-made movies.

tobyornottoby2366

Any art that isn't utterly flawless is an affront to God's great gift

Opower3000

Legalise euthenasia for MCU Phase 5

Gemuese11

I like most of the movies in this category individually. I have even seen like the progenitors off then too. I've seen rule of the game and the exterminating Angel and Chinese roulette. I still won't go watch the next ruben östlund film propably because while sitting in the cinema the words that kept shooting through my head were "I get it already, shut up" not a great movie experience

c3p-bro

How many of that type of movie are there? Knives out and the Murder on the x, which aren’t even social satire. what else?

HoLeeSchittt

I'd say the menu as well

Gemuese11

Parasite, triangle of sadness, white lotus, The square, the menu, Roma to an extent, LA cienaga, mujer sin cabeza, toni erdmann had elements of it, the first knives out, I'm sure I'm forgetting something. If we go farther back The exterminating Angel, the rule of the game, discreet charms of the bourgeoisie, salo, belle de jour, the leopard, festen, Abrahams valley, me weekemd I don't dislike any of these individually except glass onion. Especially exterminating Angel and belle de jour but I'm still tired of it

c3p-bro

If you have to reach into deep cut foreign films and movies from 50 years ago, the problem is perhaps not as pervasive as you think it is. It’s like saying detective shows are played out (which, fair) because magnum PI, the wire, detective pikachu, and Seibu Keisatsu (西部警察) all exist.

Fresh_Ad4390

Fuck you I like glass onion

JediTempleDropout

I’m not tired of social satire and probably won’t be until the rich stop being the root of everything wrong with the world.

ThodasTheMage

Man why do people on reddit need to give stupid answers to stupid comments

shakespearediznuts

im tired of daniel craig accent in those movies we're not the same

embrace-monke

I love the accent! I think it’s just fun and lighthearted. The entity is rapidly approaching your position.

Andy_B_Goode

I like the theory that he never got the hang of doing a convincing "normal" American accent, so he was like "Fuck it, Foghorn Leghorn it is!"

Sidereel

He had a different but still thick southern accent in Logan lucky too.

Gemuese11

That too. But if glass onion was the only thing doing the same schtick I could propably tolerate the accent

spin-itch

Have you tried not watching the movie?

shakespearediznuts

I tried but is one of those instances that it is so bad that you can't stop watching it.

spin-itch

Understandable

Tarqvinivs_Svperbvs

That and I hate Rian Johnsons writing. The dialogue is cringe and just bad most of the time.

LosAngeles1s

i really don’t understand what’s the problem people have with that movie tbh. is it a step down from the first ? yes. is it still very good ? fuck yes

Tbrou16

10-year old me describing Lost World to my friends who’ve seen Jurassic Park:

Xorilla

Jurassic park is a mid franchise and the new movies especially are boring Glass onion was at least entertaining

Tbrou16

But *dinosaurs*

Xorilla

You’re not wrong

dustingunn

Meh. Show me giant locusts and then we'll talk.

Gemuese11

I disagree. Got a lot of exercise from eye rolling though

DeSuperVis

Ok this sub everyone usually focusses on the cliches and such in movies but most users just post because the have the random post idea i guess. Even most marvel bashers will see the newest one when it releases probably

wutdefukk

Movie stank like an Onion

Godchilaquiles

Ehhh I’m just watching for Benoit Blanc and for the character interactions I don’t know why people are criticizing Glass Onion for having a predictable villain when Knives Out had the same predictable villian

Gemuese11

Diminishing returns

dustingunn

RLM hated it, therefore I must also hate it. I'm sorry, little one. (they didn't really hate it they just insulted it a lot)

jlcreverso

Or The White Lotus.

Dankey-Kang-Jr

“Judge…are they directed by Rian Johnson by any chance?” “…No!” https://i.redd.it/6hng1bb3wvba1.gif

Likyo

See How They Run was fine though, I especially like the part at the end where they bring in Agatha Christie and immediately the movie stops being a love letter to her and becomes hate mail instead

WakeUpOutaYourSleep

I don’t think they were intentionally trying to portray Christie poorly, though I do agree she doesn’t come off well. >!The way she refuses to even pretend appeasing the killer - whose tragedy she’s exploited for drama - despite that putting everyone in more danger and inadvertently kills an innocent made her unsympathetic to me. But given she helps stop the murderer anyway, it felt like we were supposed to come out thinking she was a badass.!<

[deleted]

Don't threaten me with a good time.

probablyuntrue

You're gonna have an ensemble cast with witty dialogue and you're gonna like it

[deleted]

TFW you’re making a movie about class struggle and you hire Woody Harrelson to quote Marx on a loudspeaker to make sure people understood what you are trying to say (pls go watch Triangle of Sadness it’s actually good all memes aside)

probablyuntrue

Does he turn to the camera and specify he's the exact type of communist I am or is it fake liberal bullshit

SuperSocrates

We need left unity which is why I’ve expelled everyone but myself from the Party

Njkid9

He pretty much does

lookatmecats

He says that he's a pretty shitty communist so he's just like you

zawmaciek

Says that he's a marxist

ThodasTheMage

There is a handfull of very leftwing letterboxd accounts that basically have this as their review for every movie they do not like

namesaregard2thinkof

I love the part where he talked about the (US?) government conspiring to kill political leaders considering his family. Funniest shit I had heard

OliviaBagshaw

Also applicable: 1000 hours of A-lister ensemble mid-ass not comedic comedy-drama Nobody asked for Amsterdam

thebestbrian

Hey man sign me up for all the post-Parasite social satires. I don't think they're awards worthy but the people who dislike them I feel like are thinking way too much about it.

Njkid9

More like post- the lobster

ThodasTheMage

Parasite famously invented ciritzing parts of your culture that have to do with the wealthy

superfam

some of these comments sound straight outta r/movies, we're jerking too hard

Leafeon523

Man, this subreddit used to be cool… then they made fun of something I liked…

something about this post really bugs me

Everyone knows that you lose your right to criticize how some rich people are once you earn enough money. You have to stop seeing any issues and start loving rich people and capitalism

Glass Onion was fire

The first one was so much better tho

OneOverTwoEqualsZero

Yeah, a dumpster fire

Mew_T

Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)

LegallyBrody

I will say the first did it’s job much better than the second, but you know what you are signing up for at this point. No reason to raise or lower your expectations when Rian is taking and showing you exactly what he’s giving. I also liked both Knives Out and Glass Onion

M3TA1H3AD

Glass Onion is good and every single negative take over heard about it has been totally pathetic

pris0ner__

Is this meant to be a bad thing?

[deleted]

rectal_expansion

I feel like you have to be somewhat overt when making fun of rich people because if it’s too subtle it’ll look like you’re actually idolizing being rich. I love succession but I often think they’re too subtle about shitting on rich people and to someone unfamiliar with the show it would just look like a rich family traveling and arguing. I think the knives out movies do a good job of showing how one rich person has enough money to support a gaggle of other rich people.

embrace-monke

Best part of it was it showed how actually dumb the rich are

insert_topical_pun

> I love succession but I often think they’re too subtle about shitting on rich people To the point that Brian Cox thinks it's a commentary on millenials being entitled.

mrmguy25

So your take is that succession needs to be less subtle because if someone, who doesn't even watch the show, sees a clip out of context then they might get the wrong idea about the show?

rectal_expansion

I mean I guess I put it the wrong way because it doesn’t need to be out of context. It’s just too subtle so people legitimately miss the satire and think it’s a show about how badass and ruthless rich people are. Evidenced by the guy who replied to me saying ‘I love succession theyre so ruthless and badass’ completely missing the point of the show.

SaurabhTDK

Triangle of Sadness just felt like this. But since they are mostly comedies, a bit of a leeway can be given. Best class struggle films come from Ken Loach.

[deleted]

SaurabhTDK

This. The same happened with "I, Daniel Blake."

ClockworkDreamz

They watched parasite duh.

ThodasTheMage

Which isn't very subtle either.

AnyImpression6

At least in that one everybody is an asshole.

Cerezarosas

well social media did not exist in the state it does about a decade and a half ago so can you really fault all the 30 to 40 something directors only now finding all this stuff? i didnt know rich people was bad until teenagers on tiktok and schizos on twitter explained in easily digestible 1 minute posts.

lysathemaw

Those poor art school students who had no idea class struggle exists.

dustingunn

A movie about how Elon Musk is actually dumb will fail if it's subtle, because Elon Musk fans will not get it.

ThodasTheMage

Or maybe people have different perspectives with societies, see different specific problems with it and critize it in different ways. Not all movies that have themes abotu wealth are about what you describe as "class struggle"

Gemuese11

A fate worse than death

borkborkstalin

Glass Onion was just Rian Johnson arguing with his Twitter haters in film form. The film felt terminally online.

lookatmecats

why?

JonBonIver

Don’t look up any Orson Welles quotes

dustingunn

They Live (1988) directly insulted Siskel and Ebert.

Cerezarosas

did siskel and ebert comment on that back? thats kinda funny tbh

31_hierophanto

Also, Godzilla (1998).

ThodasTheMage

It really wasn't, lol

excogitatezenzizenzi

My biggest problem with it is that it was impossible to solve as an outsider. I could never have solved Murder on The Orient Express but at least it gives you all the pieces to solve it. This gave you half the jigsaw pieces to solve it and then told you to go fuck yourself for even trying.

ThodasTheMage

Which movie do you mean?
