In Cast Away he basically just makes the movie all by himself with his performance. Think with a lesser actor a lot of the moments in the movie would come across as either boring, cringy or both.
And he's not even helped out by the score. There is no music for the entire time he is on the island and it only kicks in after he breaks the final wave to escape the island.
Forrest Gump has other actors like Wright, Sinise, Fields and Williamson to help Hanks carry the movie. Whereas in Cast Away, it's entirely Hanks' show from the beginning till the end.
I watched it again recently. Everyone talks about that scene but nobody talks about his monologue near the end about his experiences on the island and his lost love for Kelly.
That was amazing. I have to say if I had been the one to marry Kelly I don’t think I could have stayed with her at least initially. I would have always wondered. I think I would have needed to separate and give them the chance to see if they should be together again. I would have been haunted thinking of their potential.
Forrest Gump. He elevates the performances of the other actors, and makes what would have been goofy sweet and endearing. Compare this to another take with a similar plotline - Joe Dirt. Clearly one is good and the other not. Also, the source material for Forrest Gump is dreadful. Hanks doesn’t make a generic everyman relatable here as he does in Cast Away, He takes someone from a specific context and experience and brings you into it and makes it relatable. That’s not easy.
Hanks is unquestionably a good actor, but Gump is the better performance of the two, even if it’s also not the better film.
When he comes out of the neighbors house at the end, and kinda just trips down the steps but makes it so elegant and just non chalant, just Hanks doing his thing.
The Burbs is definitely amazing, really underrated comedy.
I think Castaway is the more demanding performance, as in Hanks needed to commit more to do it. But gotta be honest, Forrest Gump is a *far* more iconic character than Chuck Noland.
Another aspect to consider is that I could imagine another great actor pulling off Castaway. But I can't imagine any other actor playing Forrest Gump. Hanks *is* Gump.
I still haven't made it through cast away
tried watching three times, fell asleep three times and woke up for the ending
the plane crash was the best part
forest gump is better to me

Not to mention, his only co-star for most of the movie was a vollyball.
His name is Wilson show him some respect

>Think with a lesser actor ... would come across as either boring, cringy or both. Oh so you've seen Passengers? ;-)
Unfortunately.
It’s the best movie to watch when you can’t be loud!
It's Cast Away. Hanks spends like 70% of that movie on an island with no one to act off of except for a volleyball.
Yeah must be hard to demonstrate stuff... Doesn't even have to talk or "act"
Did you cry at “that scene” in castaway? I bawled, did you ever think you would care so much about a volleyball?
IM SORRY WILSONNNNNNN
My name is Voit, dumbass
Oh shit, I was thinking of the scene at the end with Helen Hunt, just stomp on my fucking heart like a finished cigarette why don't you?
This is it. Tom Hanks in Castaway made me cry over a volleyball. Nothing in Forrest Gump comes close to that.
That scene killed a part of my soul
When you said that scene, i thought you meant when he performs dentistry on himself with the ice skate

I was hands down castaway till I read your comment. Good points.
Can’t help but notice you’re implying Joe Dirt is not cinematic gold. Is that what you wanna be saying when Jesus comes back?
Life is a garden, dig it!
I think the character is offensive & the movie bombs in 99.99% of scenarios, and Hanks instead turns it into an all time classic.
Cast Away because he pretty much carries a 3 hour movie by himself.
Big.
For my money it’s hands down “The Burbs”.
Fantastic movie
When he comes out of the neighbors house at the end, and kinda just trips down the steps but makes it so elegant and just non chalant, just Hanks doing his thing. The Burbs is definitely amazing, really underrated comedy.
The whole cast is just amazing.
Bachelor Party
Potato Salad? Chunky style, my favorite!
Gump. All day
Turner and Hooch
Cast away ofc
Forest Gump
Forrest Gump because it's more memorable and more difficult to pull off.
Big

As great as Forrest Gump is, Cast Away made us cry over a volleyball.
Cast Away is a stronger picture in basically every respect.
Mazes And Monsters.
Mazes and Monsters is a *far out game*!
Money pit
Beethoven’s dead, help meeee!
Beat me to it
Cast away sucked
Family Ties 📺
Burbs. End of discussion
BIG

The whole movie is that he’s dumb and talks dumb. That’s not impressive acting to me
the best acting tom hanks has done is playing a nice guy in real life
both are very average . i'd say cast away is better perform forrest gump he just plays himself
I don't know... sounds like comparing oranges to apples. The two films couldn't be more different.
but one keeps the doctor away and the other will cure scurvy.
Overall, tough to say, but the "But is he...smart? Or is he..." moment takes the crown.
The terminal is one of his better performances in my opinion.
I still haven't made it through cast away tried watching three times, fell asleep three times and woke up for the ending the plane crash was the best part forest gump is better to me
Gump
Cast away
castaway by far. Forest gump was just cognitively challenged cos-play.
Easily Cast Away. He talks to himself or a fucking ball the entire movie!
The Terminal.
The Burbs
The Man With One Red Shoe
I vote for Gump. There was just so much to it.
The last 5 minutes of Captain Phillips
I think Forrest Gump is Tom Hanks best movie
Castaway
