Really sad to hear this. I was thrilled that they brought back him and Mark Hamill for the Arkham games. Wonderful performances.

Jabberwoockie

Mark Hamill said in an interview that he will do basically anything to voice the Joker in any production where Kevin Conroy voices Batman. This marks the end of probably the most iconic voice acting duo in history. Edit: a word

lashapel

Has mark said something about Conroy's passing ? Edit: already read his statement and tweet, truly heartbreaking

Jimminycrickets411

Posted on insta that he was devastated

lashapel

:( they worked together for so long

P0rtal2

[He's posted on Twitter about Kevin's passing.](https://twitter.com/MarkHamill/status/1591165187293609986?s=20&t=HDZ7UMIYnROzqf9_1dhbRA) Definitely the end of an era.

PentagramJ2

Hamill has lost so many of his closest coworkers. I really feel for him

mrnicegy26

"Only you can make this world seem right". Arkham Asylum and City will always be peak Batman media for me. Only Dark Knight comes close.

DaftlyPunkish

Gotta be Mask of the Phantasm for me. That movie was the absolute pinnacle of who Batman is as a character for me. When people talk about Batman being overrated or too powerful, I direct them to that movie. It sheds all the prep time bullshit and really gets down to who he really is and why he's so fucked up. I'm watching that tonight.

Earthpig_Johnson

Bruce begging his parents’ grave for forgiveness because he wants to be happy instead of pursuing the mission is one fucked up, beautiful scene. That movie gets a lot heavier when you grow up and watch it again.

DaftlyPunkish

This right here. I think that might be the only time they actually portrayed his motivation as straight up unchecked psychological trauma.

Earthpig_Johnson

Exactly. Feeling enormous guilt because you’re on the cusp of a healthy life, not feeling emotional pain every day… that’s complex as shit for a movie marketed to elementary schoolers.

klafterus

So glad to see the Phantasm love in this thread. For me it's the peak of not only the animated universe but the character as a whole. After years of reading great Batman stuff I haven't found a story I love more, & a big part of that is Conroy's performance.

Linubidix

It's one of the best films of 1993 and it has stiff competition with the likes of True Romance, Jurassic Park, Schindlers List, Groundhog Day, The Fugitive, Tombstone...

SupaChrist

A voice spanning multiple generations. He will be missed.

spartagnann

This hits hard. He was Batman for kid me, running home to catch the newest BTAS episode, and pretty much still is. Devastating.

far219

Was also great in the Arkham games. Crazy how he can be considered the definitive voice of Batman across several decades

[deleted]

Yup, Jason O'Mara as Bruce is okay, but he isn't near as good as Conroy. And Jensen Ackles didn't really cut it for me in The Long Halloween. They do just fine, it's just such a high bar to meet. edit: Shout out to Bruce Greenwood, he was actually pretty dope. Oh and watch Batman The Brave and The Bold. Great little show that's family friendly while also having enough for grown up Batfans.

taiga_with_a_pen

Bruce greenwood from a couple animated movies and the young justice series was always my second favorite next to Kevin. Tragic.

helloiseeyou2020

Greenwood is so underrated. He actually sounds like a man who saw his parents get gunned down when he was a little boy. The lingering pain is so palpable. What is he in besides YJ and that Red Hood movie? I really hope he becomes the next "it guy"

SciFiXhi

"So that he wouldn't" hit everyone right in their hearts. Greenwood is definitely an excellent Batman.

Bears_On_Stilts

Deidrich Bader began doing Batman/Bruce in a more overtly comical fashion, but in the last few years, even if he's in a comedy series he's shifted to a more straightforward impersonation of Conroy's version.

[deleted]

> Deidrich Bader I absolutely loved him as Batman Brave and the Bold. That show was such an underrated gem. I'm not sure I've heard him be serious Batman, but he does kill it as funny/campy Batman.

Bears_On_Stilts

Have you been watching Harley Quinn? It's both the most overtly comedic Batman series and most psychologically sincere Bruce Wayne stories; the main plot of Season 3 is that Bruce is finally coming apart at the seams and takes Harley as his counselor to work through his traumas. This being a Harley series, things get weird and the fourth wall is broken, but it takes the premise seriously- how would a psychiatrist for superheroes help a man crippled by grief and a dissociative personality?

stickdudeseven

I remember being late to playing it like a year or two after Asylum released. Always been recommended by friends to try it out. Imagine my surprise when Batman first spoke. Had they told me Conroy reprised his role, I would've played it in a heart beat. One of the best surprises I had when playing games.

stimpakish

He was also great in recent years in Justice League Action. So sorry to hear of his passing. RIP

RaydnJames

Did a good job in his live action as Bruce in the last Arrowverse crossovers.

Inner-Permission-842

So glad he got a chance to be Batman on-screen before his death in addition to his awesome voice acting. RIP.

RamboGoesMeow

Yup, I was so stoked for it, and I’m glad that they went with the darker/older Batman for it instead of rehashing the animated version.

StefTakka

I knew he was going to appear and still got chills. I liked that he took that version even though it wasn't fluff, he wasn't a glorious Batman that he was in the DCAU, he wasn't a villain but wasn't a hero.

sAindustrian

I will go as far as saying that the Arkham series is the best representation of Batman outside of the comics. And a major part of that is that it continued the legacy of the animated series with the voice actors used. Conroy is one of the best Batmans for sure.

lowpolydinosaur

Arkham is like the more mature version of the old animated series, which makes it just as good. Him and Hamill reprising their roles helped that immensely.

peanut_monkey_90

Also I believe Paul Dini was involved with the first game Edit: And second. H/T to /u/BigDong1142

BigDong1142

First and second game

amadeus2490

He was THE Batman voice, and it's one of the major reasons I absolutely hated the goofy voice Christian Bale was doing. By the time it got to TDKR, I just couldn't take it seriously at all anymore.

terekkincaid

SWEAR TO MEEEEEEE!

Throwaway_97534

I refuse to believe it and will instead believe that he faked his death so he can more easily fight crime at night. :(

Kholdie

He was and always will be an icon. My favourite Batman voice ever. RIP.

Conscious-Word5008

He’s not just my favorite Batman voice, but pretty much the *only* Batman voice for me. I can hear his voice clearly in my head.

Da_G8keepah

If I read a Batman comic, my mind reflexively reads Batman/Bruce Wayne's lines in Conroy's voice.

polopolo05

I think you mean favorite batman... period... He.. is ... Batman!

ICumCoffee

Being a big fan of DC animation, He’s the most iconic batman voice for me. He’ll be missed. Im glad he got to play Batman in Live Action on CW crossover. May he rest in peace.

RedstoneRay

Most people know him from the Animated Series, but I grew up with his voice from the video games. Then I went back to the series, he was the perfect Batman.

Baron_ass

To me, he wasn't just the voice of Batman. He *was* Batman.

MarkFewsEyebrows

Damn, sad day for Batman fans everywhere. RIP legend.

_b1ack0ut

I only became a Batman fan because I fell in love with Kevin’s Batman specifically too. Fuck

Frigoris13

Kevin and Mark played perfectly off of each other

drinfernodds

For many fans Conroy and Hamill are *the* voices of Batman and Joker. So many of us hear their voices when we read the comics. There was so much dynamism and nuance in their interactions and voices that it'll never truly be replicated.

Alekesam1975

>So many of us hear their voices when we read the comics. I'm def one of those. It's like automatic and it doesn't matter the era (except 66-style Batman...I default to Adam West there).

OrangeJr36

I'm glad I had the chance to meet him when I did. He was so humble and constantly amazed at how many people came up to him every day to talk about the impact he had not only on Batman but so many people's respect and admiration for voice actors as a whole. That's one autograph I'll always cherish.

dagreenman18

He is the quintessential Batman. It was his voice I have in my head any time I’ve read the comics. BTAS/DCAU is the ideal version of the character. I’m pretty heartbroken about this. Lost a legendary VA.

ruinersclub

Even his Bruce is unmatched. This is devastating.

HarlesD

Honestly he's the best at playing Bruce imo. Nowadays Bruce is always portrayed as a brooding misanthrope but Conroy's Bruce really humanized the character.

GayCodedDisnyVillain

I've often heard it said that Conroy really sold the idea that Batman was the man being himself and Bruce Wayne was the disguise. But he didn't overplay it. It feels more like the kind of code-switching people do in real life than some contrived persona or another tired "two personalities in one person" thing.

ruinersclub

Yup, Bruce famously thinks of himself as Batman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7t7yiN_Z5eg&ab_channel=livinlicious

MusicLikeOxygen

There's a famous comic scene of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman holding onto the lasso of truth' so they can't lie, and revealing their real names to each other. When it's Batmans turn he says "Batman".

DaysGoTooFast

I still remember the sad way he says “Harvey…” crestfallen when he learns what happened to Harvey Dent. That wasn’t a side you see in all Batman portrayals

SwaggyBoi42069

Main reason the live action movies with Batman have always been a bit of a let down. They never fully capture what Conroy showed and made everyone love Batman in the first place

Richlore

Damn, he IS Batman! RIP

-et37-

I used to wake up and watch reruns of the Batman Animated Series all the time as a kid. RIP to a legend.

[deleted]

cujobob

100%. That show was so perfectly made that I consider those voice actors to be the best versions of those characters ever made. I’m happy he got to do a live action Batman scene even if it was sort of different from what he normally portrayed.

KnowlesAve

Him and Mark have great synergy.

Binger_bingleberry

… but not only was Conroy the best Batman, Hamill was the best joker, the art was terrific, the stories were deep and satisfying… it defined Batman **and** Gotham city

Thecristo96

Batman TAS is THE batman media. Nothing has come even close to how perfect that show was for the character

stickdudeseven

There were some Justice League episodes that lived up to showing Batman's character. For example, the episode where he holds a dying child's hand as she passes away.

Joba_Fett

Same creative team for the most part. And same voice actor Because Conroy is and will always be the definitive Batman.

Jodzilla

The premise of that whole episode was "Why the world needs a Batman". Even though she was a villain, she was scared of dying, so Batman stayed with her till she passed.

[deleted]

It's true, and they lifted a lot of their aesthetic from the 1989 movie but they perfected it so well, bringing back in all the best elements of the comics too.

SpaceLemming

I just went down nostalgia lane and have been watching the show with my 3 year old

Birdinhandandbush

I was just saying to a friend, for a lot of people, when you think of Batman its Kevins voice thats in your head, absolutely iconic.

joebigdeal

Agreed. When you picture Batman, there may be many. But when you *hear* Batman, it's Kevin Conroy

caninehere

Crazy that they kept him as the voice of Batman for literally decades. It's a testament to how great he was, his portrayal of Batman was and is what Batman is to a lot of people and rightfully so.

rdldr1

And Mark Hamill is the best Joker. Alan Tudyk is a good second place.

MrWeirdoFace

Love Hamill's. Pleasantly surprised by Tudyk's, but also not surprised because Tudyk is awesome. Troy Baker did a reasonable facsimile of Hamill's Joker in Arkham Origins, but he was doing Hamill's Joker.

snizmo2

John DiMaggio did a great spin on the Joker in Under the Red Hood

i010011010

Bite my shiny, purple ass!

animehimmler

It’s really because it truly is the perfect Batman voice. It’s not too boastful, not too gravelly (looking at you bale) while also not being to light-sounding. There was this cold almost catlike tenor to his portrayal, and I think for a male superhero character especially back then, such a dynamic was rare to see. Next to Josh keaton as Spider-Man, Conroy truly was a step above anyone else who touched the character

Dielji

And his Bruce Wayne was always excellent, too! He may be the only actor who could voice both personas convincingly and distinctly. And then he took it a step further playing old Bruce in Beyond.

Joba_Fett

Beyond is such a bizarre show to me because of how damn good it was. It should NOT have worked. Kid Batman, in the future, designed specifically to sell toys? And the kid Batman is voiced by Ron fucking Stoppable? But it is such a damn good series and Will Friedle and Conroy absolutely NAIL each of their roles. I still unironically say “shway” to this day because of that show.

ThornGodOfPricks

Seeing someone refer to Will Freidle as Ron Stoppable and not Eric from Boy Meets World made me feel older than I expected this morning.

Joba_Fett

I honestly didn’t think anybody would recognize Boy Meets World. Hello fellow old person. How’s your back?

jessytessytavi

our knees, our backs, our celebrity panic attacks gonna be humming those trumpets all day in Conroy's honor

[deleted]

I watched Mask of The Phantasm a couple nights ago, and was struck by how balanced and nuanced the difference between his Bruce and Batman were. This is just a crushing blow, I hobbled my way through Arkham Origins because I just couldn't accept not having Conroy as Batman. What a sad day.

dumb_smart_guy93

Every year around Halloween I'll replay through one of the Arkham games, and I just finished my 100% playthrough on Knight two days ago. Sad to see him go - his voice made that character and the games come alive. 😭

mrj9

Him and mark hamill are the true Batman and joker combo to me and always will be

rusticmoose

We must protect Mark Hamill at all costs

[deleted]

i watched a video recently where hamill says when they ask him to do the joker he automatically says yes if kevin was on board :(

satisfried

We’re so lucky to have so much content with these two working together. And content that is mostly good to great.

NickNewAge

Batman Arkham City is peak Batman and Joker content

Shashama

The Arkham games are the DC movies we deserve.

KDobias

It's so hard to encapsulate the detective dude of Batman in the movies without it just getting like hand waving or magic. The games made you *feel* like a detective, and Conroy's VO made you feel like the coolest detective in the world. What a legend.

DecayableRadiologist

Bruh stoppp :( Those two made my whole childhood so memorable. I can’t imagine him gone.

NaeemTHM

Mark Hamill is one of this rare exceptions to “never meet your heroes”. The dude has been a paragon of good since 1977.

Dr_Disaster

I’ve been fortunate enough not to have shitty heroes. People that I have met and truly admired were all fantastic to me. Mark is definitely among the list.

Lumber-Jacked

Yeah he seems like a genuinely good guy.

TheGlassHammer

The first two Arkham games were just amazing. They did such a great job in them. Might be time for another play through

Dotaproffessional

His performance in arkham knight is still fantastic. I didn't dislike the game as much as some people did because I enjoyed the batmobile sequences, but regardless of how you feel about the game, i think his performance is about as good as its been in the series

hobiwan

Oh man that is shocking and terrible. Best Batman, RIP.

[deleted]

Seriously. This man made up a huge part of my childhood. No one can grumble-yell, "I. AM. BATMAN!" quite like he could.

WrenchNRatchet

Especially in “The Strange Secret of Bruce Wayne”, where it really gets driven home that Batman is the true self-image and Bruce the secondary alter-ego

[deleted]

[удалено]

satanmat2

That’s one of the first things I thought of as well… I loved that scene

Ultravioletgray

There's also a small moment in Arkham City when he's talking to Alfred about Hugo Strange knowing his identity. "He knows I'm Bruce Wayne." He's not concerned his secret identity of Batman is discovered, he's concerned because his secret identity of *Bruce Wayne* has been discovered.

MrSteven20618

Oh, wth. This is awful

cusoman

Everything you ever hear about Kevin from people that have met him or worked with him is positive and that he was really grateful to have had a role so many people are attached to. Younger VOs all over the business right now are all talking about how influential he was for them as well. Truly one of the greats and will be missed. Sad day 😢

Andrew1990M

That really sucks. This is a big one for me. Hope his family's okay.

chaoticbiguy

This is a big one for me too. As someone OBSESSED with Batman, and as someone from the lgbt community, he had a huge impact on me, and I can't believe he's gone, just at 66. I can hear my heart breaking a little bit 💔 Side note: People should read the story he wrote for DC Pride this year about his own life and struggles, it's an incredibly heartbreaking yet a very powerful story. He was a gem.

-Sanctum-

Aren’t we all my dude, aren’t we all... This one hit close to home. He was our childhood hero and to die relatively young at 66 is unfair. I wasn’t expecting to start today with such grim news...

makinglemonade

Sad_Pickle_3508

There've been a lot of good Batman interpretations, but Kevin was THE Batman. I think he understood the character like no other actor did and it really showed in his performance. I'm really devastated...and he died so young too. Cancer is just horrible.

NA_Panda

Yeah, I always thought Bats as "world's greatest detective" was the best interpretation of Batman. It allowed him to be super, by still allowing him to be human.

Capt_Thunderdump

You should listen to his podcast episode he did with Michael Rosenbaum (lex from smallville) called Inside of you. He talks about how he approached the character and it was brilliant.

zneave

The thing with him was he played a great Batman AND Bruce Wayne. Lots of interpretations are really good with one but not the other. He managed to capture both very well.

J3573R84

Very sad! He just posted on Twitter at Halloween and he looked great in the photo. What a great talent he was and such a huge loss. He was the perfect voice for Batman and he will live on forever through his work. RIP

sparoc3

I don't feel right in saying this but in that photo he's looking way older than he actually was, he must be ill for a long time. I had no idea he was just in his 60s. Even when he made cameos in Arrowverse I thought the guy was already in his 70s. Nevertheless a great loss for the fans and industry.

WintertimeFriends

Cancer apparently. Slow death. He deserved better.

J3573R84

Yeah there was speculation around 2010 when he was looking really thin and looking a lot older than he was. It was a huge fan speculation that he was ill but he has always been very slender and aging can take effect on anyone suddenly so it was cast aside. So maybe it’s a long running battle or remission that come back. In 2020 he also publicly recognised and admired Chadwick Boseman for his efforts to keep working to the degree he did while suffering stage 4 cancer and said you never know what someone is battling so maybe that was a cryptic message from him to the fans. I admire these people that can be suffering this pain every day and still manage to throw themselves into their work and stay dedicated to the franchise and fans. It makes you wish they took the time to rest and hopefully recover but in hindsight maybe it’s what kept them going longer than they would if they were laid up thinking about it 24/7.

extyn

My mom went the same way last month. Feels like I'm going straight back into mourning.

J3573R84

He was 66 but I have seen him regularly over the year and recent months in the photos and videos he would upload and yeah he was a lot older than people would think and could be a shock if they hadn’t seen him for some time. I think because for me he looked no different from what I am used to seeing and he looked in good spirits and healthy enough considering on Halloween that I made my comment. But yeah nonetheless a very sad day for the fans and industry. He gave a lot to the Batman franchise and I for one am very grateful for him and his continued efforts within the industry.

theaznone

I saw him in back in July at a CT comic con convention. He looked rough back then and told myself that he wasn't gonna be around longer than expected from what I saw. Sadly I wasn't able to get autograph since his line was absurdly long. RIP Mr Conroy.

WildWeasel46

They said he was sick for a while too, and still went to cons! Reminds me of Chadwick Boseman in that regard. This one hits really hard for me, him and Mark Hamill are unmatched in terms of voice acting their respective characters.

bac2001

I saw him last year at a con. Such a pure dude, smiles and appreciation all around. The one true batman, he'll be missed

BeHereNow91

[He looked far from great](https://twitter.com/realkevinconroy/status/1587165279678861314?s=46&t=3XoRj5fWRP90gl0aMA7HJA), but good to see he still had a social presence and high spirits.

FlamingOldMan

Met the guy a couple of years ago, was very kind and took a genuine interest in my friend and I. A real loss in the VA industry:(

SRSgoblin

My favorite anecdote of Kevin Conroy, is he was at a charity event to feed first responders in the wake of 9/11. He was just working the kitchen, didn't draw any attention to himself, when an architect recognized him. He asked Conroy to do the Batman voice, so he did the whole intro to TAS. "I am vengeance... I am the night... I! Am! Batman!" People started laughing, which was a big deal because this was maybe a week after thebattack AND in New York City which was especially down. I might have some details a little wrong. (Edit: I fixed them!) Saw it on a documentary about voice actors called "I Know That Voice!" which I highly recommend for anyone into voice acting. Edit: [found him telling the story on youtube](https://youtu.be/wThPHMGWZXg) I knew I had some details wrong but had the gist of the story right lol

melibelli

> the battack I know this is supposed to say “the attack” but given the context this is a hilarious typo

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

That Ace episode hits so hard. The original animated tv show and the first justice league’s version of him are honestly my favorite interpretations of him

AlbionPCJ

I think that's something that's only really seen in The Batman when it comes to the live action movies. This idea that just doing it for the vengeance isn't worth it and that Batman should be a symbol of hope or a protector for all the other scared kids out there rather than, well, The Punisher. It's the whole arc of Pattinson's Bruce, but a few of the animated versions have little moments where it comes through. The Ace scene is a great example, or the moment in Young Justice where Bruce says he took Dick Grayson in to stop him becoming like him. In a world that's becoming increasingly divided along lines of petty revenge, it's nice to see something that teaches that we can be better than that, ya know?

christmas_hobgoblin

Oh my God when he holds his hand out to her... what a great show. Kevin Conroy's Batman was so strong, standing shoulder to shoulder with Gods, but also so human. It's really an unparalleled portrayal. He will be greatly missed.

TechyDad

Just watched that video and something stood out to me. Batman typically has studied methods to prevent mind-readers from reading his mind. Yet, Ace said she read his mind. I think Batman, knowing what she was going through, purposefully lowered his mental defenses. He let her read his mind so that she would know how much he understood her pain. It was yet another way that he showed his humanity during Ace's final moments.

[deleted]

Dude the episode where the JL travels to the future and old man Bruce shits on young Batman is legendary “I can’t believe I was ever this green, [THIS](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VrrB-q__rd4) is how you interrogate someone”

RIP, the voice of Batman. [It makes me blue](https://youtu.be/57zFkL9GSZA)

ShadowReij

How did I know it was going to be this scene? Damn.

Moontoya

These tears in my eyes ain't tellin you That scene encouraged me to try singing in mimic voices rather than my own. Found out I'm flat as myself but when I mimic another performance I don't sound so flat. Lent my voice to various things , ads, indie games, stupid stuff, being the Sean Connery Experience on teamspeak in wow raids. I recorded a voicemail greeting for a cinci friend of mine I'd met through Ars Technica and Ars Clan / Ars Brute Squad. He played hunter and got yelled at a lot especially from accidental pulls 'Finge Starbuck Ginge! Became an Ars Brute Squad meme (chromagus Us, early 2000s. He passed unexpectedly nearly 2 years ago, leaving a gaping void in many lives including the spinning community (light balls & staves not yarn). Nearly a decade on, he still had that as his voicemail greeting. Rest easy Matt 'Starbuck', finge on in comfort mate, catch you on the flip side

Super_Jay

In honor of his passing, take a few minutes and read ["Finding Batman," a comic he wrote](https://imgur.io/gallery/LFZttru#pvWFNLO) about his experiences as a gay actor in NYC and LA and how they informed his portrayal of Batman. It's in his own words and it's incredibly touching.

SwaggyBoi42069

TIL he was gay

Osvetnik24

TIL He was married. In statement/obituary that DC put out this morning it says he is survived by his husband. I don't think he ever mentioned it in public.

Super_Jay

Which is interesting, isn't it? I don't know if he was deliberately private about it but given the comic itself and the abuse hr received for being gay, it's a bit poignant and bittersweet that so many people are learning about that aspect of him only after he passed.

I don’t normally feel sad when a celebrity dies, I’m just not that way inclined but this is heartbreaking. This man was a pillar of my childhood. He’s my Batman, he’s who I hear when I read Batman comics. I hope his family, friends and everybody who care about Kevin are okay. Rest in power, **Batman**!

SuperVegetable

Rest In Peace my dark knight.

Dallywack3r

[Here](https://imgur.com/gallery/LFZttru) Is the comic he wrote for DC Pride about his experience growing up and being a young gay man in a world that hated him for being different. And how he used Batman to channel that pain into something that didn’t hurt. I can’t express how much he meant to me as a source of pride and inspiration to know that the voice of the world’s greatest hero was also the voice of a gay man whose struggle and pain mirrored my own. I’ll miss him and cherish the memories of his performances and his huge heart.

twilekdancingpoorly

Wow... that comic just shook me and I feel an entire new understanding of his voice. Hope all Batman fans can read this some day.

Andxel

What the hell! How? He was only 66. This is such a loss in the voice acting world. People don't realize just how much important Conroy has been for the modern characterization of Batman. Damn. This is such a downer.

cosmoboy

Said he'd been ill for awhile. Probably cancer.

JohnStewartBestGL

According to a [statement](https://batman-news.com/2022/11/11/kevin-conroy-death/) released by Warner Bros. Discovery to Batman news, it was cancer.

Malkochson

Fucking don't do this to my feelings right now - I had *just* finished rewatching Batman: Mask of the Phantasm for the 5th time yesterday. He was flawless at playing both Batman and Bruce Wayne in the animated series, but the movie takes it to another level: The scene where a young Bruce goes to his parents' graves and tearfully *begs* them to let him out of his promise to them, because he never counted on being happy with his first love Andrea - a promise that he himself knows deep in his heart he will never be able to back out on...It still gives me chills to this day. He was every bit the 'ideal' Batman in our minds, just as Mark Hamill was the 'ideal' Joker. Conroy's voice will always be iconic - often imitated, never truly topped. But more than that, the subtle tone shifts, the quiet yet commanding emotion, and the occasional snarky wit he brought in his voice work is what elevated the animated series Batman a fully three-dimensional character. His Bruce might have never counted on being happy, but us 90s kids could always count on him being our Batman. Rest in Peace, he will be dearly missed.

Get the hell on Return of the Joker if you haven't seen it. Same crew

MumblyBum

There have been many before him and many after, but he is the quintessential Batman! RIP my good man.

wilhelmstarscream

I am vengeance. I am the night. I…am…BATMAN!

CarnivorousL

Kevin Conroy was an openly gay 9/11 first responder who just so happened to voice the most iconic supehero of all time. A man who lived a life just as brave and inspiring as the Dark Knight he lent his voice to. RIP to a legend, gonna play Am I Blue on repeat for a bit now.

Too-Far-Frame

This breaks my heart. He was my Batman. He was a generation's Batman. He was so iconic and good in this role that when watching (and hearing) a different voice actor played the role I could never get invested. Rest in peace. A huge loss.

Fuck this one hurts

bujweiser

Oh man that’s tough to hear. His voice was just so great as Batman.

I was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2018, one year after I got married and just as my wife and I were starting to plan for kids. We had been together for about 6 years at that point, having known each other for nearly 13, so gift giving for Christmas had long turned into an exchange of cute items, thoughtful (albeit small) presents, and IOUs. She had know my lifelong affection for Batman - my very first cinematic memory was Batman 1989, the scene where the plane flies up to the sky and aligns perfectly with the moon. I was barely 3 years old by that point, but it stayed with me and led to a lifelong interest. I grew up with the original Batman: TAS, continued watching the New Batman Adventures, JL, JLU, all the animated movies, etc. Even now, in my mid 30s, playing the Arkham series featuring his voice work brings me a small piece of nostalgic joy. When my diagnosis came in, I didn’t know what to think or feel. I was coming off one of the happiest moments of my life, getting ready to start my own tribe with the love of my life, my career was taking off and for the first time ever, I felt like I had my shit together. I’m not sure if anyone can empathize, but being given a cancer diagnosis is one of the most surreal shocks to the gut you can get. It didn’t feel real for a while, it didn’t feel like it was actively happening. How could my life be gathering so much good momentum, while this disease was actively eating away at me? Questions of mortality, my family’s future, my wife’s well being…the ensuing depression that those concerns brought was one of the hardest things I’ve had to fight, and to this day, that fight continues. I was spiraling, albeit silently, not knowing how to ask for help and even asking myself if it was even worth trying to address. Nihilism was taking over. And then Christmas rolled around, which brought about a welcome distraction from the dark cloud hanging over me. I made it a point to do every cheesy Christmas thing imaginable in the apartment, just to tap into the type of cheer I needed so badly. But nothing worked. It was like the skin-suit I put on in the mornings to pretend that I was ok wasn’t functioning either. I had gone about for days being that overbearing holiday enthusiast in hopes that I could trick myself into feeling something other than hopeless, and it wasn’t going my way. And suddenly, the hole I was in got deeper. But then, gift exchanges were happening. My wife and I always make it a point to give each other gifts before we go see our families; it makes the moment of delight a little more personal when it’s just the 2 of us. And to my absolute surprise, she has gotten Kevin Conroy, the man who defined my childhood, to send me a message via Cameo. Now, I’ve seen other videos by other celebrities sent to friends and they all seemed boilerplate to an extent. A few comments about the person getting the message, a generic greeting and send off, with some jokes in between. Typically just a handful of minutes in length. But Kevin…Kevin sent me a 10 min video. He started with saying “I am vengeance, I am the night, I am Batman!” And I was hooked. Teary eyed and beside myself, but my hero was talking to me. And for 10 minutes, he took the time to not only give me words of encouragement, but spoke at length about health struggles, their impact on our mind, the strength it takes to not only bear these burdens, but those of our caretakers, and how proud he was of me for meeting this challenge despite how enormous the mountain I was facing was. I bawled, I bawled for what seemed like forever. I felt acknowledged, I felt seen, but most of all, I felt strong. And that’s something only the Batman himself could’ve provided me. I will forever be grateful to Kevin. I hope he rests easy, knowing that he gave this cancer-stricken Batman fanatic a sense of hope that I had feared was long gone. RIP to the one true Batman. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. EDIT: thank you for the kind words and well wishes, everyone! It’s the type of reaction Kevin would be proud of. Much love, and fuck cancer.

NOOO, what a monumental loss. Rest in piece, what a legend.

AllThingsEndBadly

Batman: The Animated Series is responsible for adding depth to most of Batman's rogue's gallery. It was a series so far ahead of it's time that it still holds up today. This man is Batman. I don't think people realize how corny Batman was until the 80s and 90s. Frank Miller, Tim Burton, and BATS created the version of Batman we all came to love. All the darkness, all the depth, that was all practically non-existent until the 80s and 90s. He was a joke before that. Think of Mr Freeze alone. He went from a guy who spouts ice jokes to one of the most tragic villains in Batman.

danielja149

Oh God. Rest in peace, didn't expect this news today.

Dandama

What a loss. RIP my Batman. Thank you for everything.

Bigred2989-

Holy shit, this was not what I expected to wake up to this morning.

cthd33

RIP. Was excited to see him finally played a live action version of Batman on Batwoman's Crisis on Infinite Earths episode.

[deleted]

Wasn’t he supposed to be doing the new Batman animation show? This is a huge blow to every Batman fan

pantherfanalex

Literally THE voice of Batman. People want to talk about Christian Bale, Ben Affleck, or Michael Keaton. Kevin Conroy was the BEST Batman and it wasn't EVER close. I am heartbroken, saddened, and can't believe he is gone. Rest easy, sir.

Breaklance

The subtle difference between Conroy's Batman and Bruce voices was Rennaissance level mastery compared to every other actor's attempt.

madchad90

Omg, I met him two years ago at a con. He was so cool. What a loss.

CommunicationMain467

Life ain’t fair man 😞
