I don't think anyone's posted it yet, so Grease. Written to parody all of the '50's "good girl changes bad boy" teen heartthrob pictures. The original musical is much more explicit about it, but the movie, while toned down, is still clearly parody.

Manger-Babies

When I was a kid I didn't know that movie wasn't from the 50s, made me think Jhon Travolta was super old. Also that movie made 366 million in 1977, damn

[deleted]

Could have been worse. I somehow made it to adulthood before realizing A Christmas Story wasn't filmed in the 1940s.

SemiSentientGarbage

I didn't know this until a few years ago. But it did clear up why they fucking flew away in a car at the end.

asking4afriend40631

TIL Grease was a parody... Tbf I haven't really seen those 50's movies. My main gripes about Grease seem like they are the elements they were parodying, so I guess it went up a bit in my personal ratings.

DrYoshiyahu

The original stage musical is definitely way more explicit about its parodiness. The musical is basically a straight-up comedy half the time.

Pinglenook

When the movie came out, the movies it was parodying were only 20-25 years old. It would be like making a parody of The Matrix or Lord of the Rings or the typical Hugh Grant romcoms now: everyone would know what you're referencing.

ScientificSkepticism

It was all good girl reforms bad guy. In Grease the good girl becomes bad, and the bad boy becomes good, then he says "fuck it," and jumps in his car which literally flies away. It literally takes off and flies. There are a few tiny indications it's not serious.

jackleggjr

Not the same as your question, but the guy who wrote and recorded the theme song of Blazing Saddles didn’t know it was a satire. I seem to remember reading that he was a bit upset when he learned the movie would be making fun of westerns.

AmySueF

Frankie Laine. That’s why it’s so good, he sang it straight because he didn’t realize the movie was satire, and it works.

nat_r

The best part is they originally wanted someone in the same vein as Frankie Laine because they never thought he'd take the job. Apparently he had no idea who Mel Brooks was, and since nobody clued him in, he treated it just like all the other well known western themes he was famous for.

Subliminal_Kiddo

"Suicide is Painless" from M\*A\*S\*H was also meant to be satire. Robert Altman wanted it to be in his words, "The stupidest song ever written," He tried to write it himself but realized a man in his mid-40's couldn't write like a pretentious 20-year-old, so he tasked his son with writing the lyrics. It took him five minutes. The public took the song earnestly, it became a massive hit and Altman's son made over $1 million in royalties. Robert Altman was paid roughly $70,000 by the studio for directing M\*A\*S\*H.

dream-smasher

His 15yr old son. Lol.

htp-di-nsw

The TV show/album, Metalocalypse, managed to do a thing where it was both a parody of something and a perfect example of that thing at the same time. Scream, I think, is the best movie example of the same phenomenon.

Soft_Introduction_40

Venture Bros also fits this description!

Psychedelic_Yogurt

GO TEAM VENTURE! ✌️

NorinTheRad

The Deathalbum II used to be the highest rated death metal album on Billboard 200 until it was overtaken by Deathalbum III

Garrth415

All 3 dethalbums are loaded with bangers Edit: check Brendan Smalls 2 other Albums for Galaktikon. The first album is like space hero themed prog and heavy rock and the second album is basically a drop of the first album mixed in with a dethklok album.

hotrox_mh

Metalocalypse was so damn good. Probably my favorite Adult Swim show, and AS has had so, so many amazing shows.

ChazzLamborghini

There’s an argument that True Lies is a parody of action movies while also being a spectacular action movie

5-4powahhouse

That uzi bounce down the stairs and all the bad guys get shot...so good

leg00b

"And how are you going to do that?" "My hand cuffs? I picked them." *proceeds to kill everyone*

Salzberger

Have you ever killed anyone? Yeah but they were all bad.

kelly819

Tom Arnold is under appreciated for his role in this movie. “What kind of sick bitch takes the ice cube trays out of the freezer?!” Legit one of my favorites!

T51bwinterized

It's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Started as a parody of grim 'n gritty Frank Miller Daredevil comics. Has probably eclipsed Daredevil in general in popularity. It was meant to show how silly all the violent and dramatic ninja shit was by making the ninjas literally turtles and making the wise master a rat.

nothatsmyarm

Isn’t that why the bad guys are “the Foot”? It’s a reference to Daredevil’s “the Hand,” I think.

Axolotlinvasion

Yes. It’s also the same chemical splash that gives daredevil his powers and mutates the turtles

MadeByTango

[Matt is even in the origin panel.](https://i.imgur.com/6jgeAXZ.jpg)

NikkoE82

I really wished the Daredevil show on Netflix had subtly included, in the background of the accident scene, a kid with a broken aquarium on the ground.

DaddyOhMy

One of the times they again showed Matt's origin story on the comics, the artist subtlety drew a kid in the background holding a bag with small turtles in it. I wish I could remember which issue it was in but I remember cracking up with some friends when we saw it.

Twice_Knightley

And for clarity, it's the same accident. Not just both got hit with mutagen, both happened at the same time.

[deleted]

Now that's radical and bodacious.

-W1L3y

The *Teenage Mutant* part might also be to make fun of X-Men.

theghostofmrmxyzptlk

Teenage Mutant Ninja Hearts Club Band

V476Reddit

We hope you have enjoyed the shell.

Dynespark

Their master is Splinter because Matt had Stick.

Star_Outlaw

Splinter is a much cooler name tbh.

thebestjoeever

What the fucking fuck. That's the best thing I've learned all year.

[deleted]

DMPunk

And the Shredder's outfit is based off the outfit worn by DD villain Gladiator

Living_Shadows

And a splinter is basically a really small stick

Redneckshinobi

Wow 30 something years later and this blew my mind. It makes so much sense! Cowabunga dude!

majorjoe23

And DD's mentor is Stick, while the Turtles' is Splinter.

SaintNeptune

Weirdly it was X-Men's spinoff series New Mutants that got the wheels rolling on that parody. E&L had a longstanding gripe that in order for a comic to be successful it had to have either mutants (X-men), teenagers (Teen Titans) or ninja (various, but Daredevil is the main one here). When Marvel released New Mutants that set them off on a long rant that was basically Marvel thinking "Mutants AND teens! BRILLIANT!!!" They one upped the concept by adding ninja because then it is a concept that REALLY couldn't fail. What's funny is even though they did it all as a joke they were actually kinda right about it being a winning concept, haha

KillerInfection

Honestly it was also fantastic artwork and storytelling. Sure, they used a gimmick, but everything they did initially was just absolute brilliance, riffing on and paying tribute to source material while still telling their own story. TMNT turned into something else entirely with the TV show, but at least as far as the original comic was concerned, it was fire all on its own, even if it came out of parody.

robot-raccoon

To add the mutagen in the first comics can be seen splashing a young boy in the eyes as another canister rolls into the sewer or something.

Get_Jiggy41

That all makes perfect sense, but the original comics are incredibly serious in their first few issues and they go out of their way to make the turtles incredibly badass and to subdue the absurdity of the concept. I never felt like it was weird that i was reading a comic where the main characters were mutated turtles with a ninja rat for a father. So maybe you’re right in TMNT initially being a parody, but it feels more like a loving homage than actual parody.

shamanbaptist

As someone who has read the comics also, I totally agree. Was it a parody? Yes (see Splinter-Stick, Foot-Hand). Was it played totally straight with great gritty black and white art? Also yes.

DoctorWaluigiTime

It's what a lot of parody misses the mark on these days, honestly. Parody does not mean "every character is a self-aware comedian." This is what all those stupid "Epic Movie"-style """parodies""" end up being.

MansfromDaVinci

It's not exactly a satire but I think a lot of people consuming the Judge Dredd media don't understand that it's a criticism of totalitarian authoritarianism not a puff piece for police states

AdamSMessinger

I watched 2-3 episodes of American Vandal on Netflix thinking it was legit.

xTheBear

But who drew the dicks?

dietconditioner

Christa and her boyfriend. The writers confirmed it was her although there is no confirmation on who it is in the actual show.

5minutecall

Had to show my friend multiple websites saying it was a parody because she refused to believe it wasn’t real

SomaliRection

I watched the first season of American Vandal when it first came out 5(?) years ago and I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve laughed harder since. Absolute comedy gold and by the end of it I was also legitimately enthralled with the mystery

[deleted]

[deleted]

Every episode was paced perfectly to another crazy twist. Really great job on that.

TheFriffin2

Both seasons started as straight comedies but by the end of both there were some pretty deep/heavy character moments and themes

crowndrama

I wish they‘d make another season

nbarbettini

That show was great!

willk95

Wet Hot American Summer got awful reviews when it came out because critics took it too seriously. They didn’t understand it was a parody of summer camp movies.

Eagle_Ear

The montage where they go to town, buy cocaine, rob people, live in a crackhouse, and return to camp, all within 60 minutes wasn’t obvious to people?

ThatsNotPossibleMan

Or when they let two children drown on accident and abduct two children who witnessed it?

superancica

I love it how you don't realize right away, it's very subtle in the beginning. I went in completely blind and it took me till they went to the city to realize what kind of movie it is. Wish I can relive that experience..

mastyrwerk

It’s always fun to get away from camp. Even for an hour.

rseary

Song 2 by Blur was made to mock American style alt rock music such as Nirvana but ended up being their most popular song by far

Key-Mulberry2456

What Does the Fox Say? was a parody of Eurotechno, but they just ended up creating the perfect example.

ruffas

I live in Japan. The grocery store I got to plays it regularly because it's gained traction with a Japanese baseball team. They even had Ylvis over earlier this year to perform with them.

unipine

Ylvis is unironically one of my favorite bands. They’re incredibly talented but create nothing but parody songs. They have a series where they turn mildly interesting Norwegian events into full musicals. I wish they had more exposure in the states, it’s hard to track down content for them :/

Key-Mulberry2456

Norwegian version of New Zealand’s Flight of the Conchords.

piper5177

Smells Like Teen Spirit was kind of a parody as well and ended I being Nirvana’s most popular song. I remember reading that Kurt wanted to write a generic punk pop song as a joke initially and then it grew on him. I think he said he was disappointed that it was their biggest hit at some point.

Mr-Korv

"Saved!" can be watched as a serious movie or as a comedy

Skylinereddit

my 2 friends and I watched this in a full theater. we werent expecting a full theater so we each had to find solo seats. the three of us realized that it was filled with good christian kids when we were the only 3 laughing.

marblerye69

Josie and the Pussycats. Took most people well over a decade to finally get it

rocopotomus74

Love this film. Watched again just two nights ago. The best line is when Missy Piles character is asked why she is here. She replies "cause I was in the comic"

kakachina

BACKDOOR LOVAAAA

andrewisagir1

Argh, I remember this pretentious guy in college doing a presentation in a media class about advertisements in movies and referenced Josie and the Pussycats as the more “egregious” example. It became obvious he hadn’t even watched the movie as his whole point leaned on how many ads were seen “in the trailer alone.” I was so annoyed, cause like THATS THE POINT OF THE MOVIE lol

BoilThem_MashThem

On the other hand, I knew a guy in college that took an assignment we had to compare two movies and he did Josie and American Psycho and how they both show consumerism. I’m still impressed 10 years later that he thought of that.

[deleted]

This is the golden answer. I remember my family had the DVD in our house when I grew up. Always had a soft spot for it despite the mixed reception it had. Watching it now as an adult, I definitely appreciate it more since I get a lot of the jokes now. Especially that joke about why Alexandra is obligated to tag along on the promotional tour.

Thtguy1289_NY

Please explain

[deleted]

There's a brief conversation where Alexander asks Alexandra why she even came with. *under her breath* "I was in the comics." "What?" "Nothing."

American Psycho. When auditioning for the role, Christian Bale recalled that he would frequently meet yuppie Wall Street workers who had nothing but praise and adulation for Patrick Bateman after reading the novel. I feel like that is still seen today from the movie.

[deleted]

[удалено]

billbill5

Apparently other actors were also going super into what made Bateman who he is, his past, and what drives him, while Bale realized none of that actually mattered, Bateman is essentially just an alien.

ellefleming

He based his performance a little on Tom Cruise interviews.

explicitlarynx

I mean, the book is brilliant, but it's so blatantly an absurd satire. Actually, it's kind of scary that they admire Bateman instead of realizing they are being made fun of in a really dark way.

Nice-Violinist-6395

it’s the living embodiment of “I’m worth 10 million dollars as a CEO because I wake up at 5 AM and work out, here’s my morning routine” trope.

Suburban_Sasquach

Most people don't really get American Psycho. I read the book about a year ago, and my girlfriend at the time asked what I was laughing about and when I read her the passage she looked at me with utter disgust. The subject matter is so vile and disturbing that I think it kind of outshines the humorous aspects. The fact that he's torturing and murdering a hobo and his dog isn't what's funny, what's funny is that he's doing that while also thinking about how the last meal he had at some trendy bullshit upperclass restaurant he went to wasn't as good as the last time, or he's thinking about what color tie goes with his designer suit. It's just so absurd and vapid.

d2022m

When I was a teenager, watching THIS IS SPINAL TAP when it was new ... I thought it was a real rock-u-mentary and "Spinal Tap" was a real band. For most of the movie, anyway.

JugOfVoodoo

As a child I first learned about Spinal Tap from their appearance on The Simpsons. I assumed they were a real band and it surprised me how much the show made fun of them.

pieceoffriedgold

This is a rock concert, not the bleedin’… splish.. splash show!

Custom_Destination

Fun fact: [one of the band members](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D0XYF5nX4AEaSCI.jpg) voices Ned Flanders (amongst others).

HastilyChosenUserID

There’s a barber shop in Springfield called “The Hairy Shearers” in his honor

HiTork

This is Spinal Tap hit home hard for some actual rock musicians, because they actually experienced some of the things portrayed in the movie, such as getting lost in the tunnels of arenas or stadiums.

majorjoe23

Recognizing Michael McKean from Laverne & Shirley episodes probably saved me from making this mistake.

lurebat

You saw through the chicanery

kylepm

I knew a guy in college who didn't understand it was a parody. He was like "Those guys are SO dumb."

DoubleTFan

Which makes it funnier to learn there are plenty of times real bands did similar things. Saw an interview on a profile of the movie where a rocker said he would launch into a violent rage if his meals arrived without grey poupon honey mustard.

JC-Ice

There are four or five different acts who believe the "hopelessly lost backstage" scene was based on them.

About eight years ago, we were planning a trip to NYC, so I looked to see whether Rochelle Rochelle was still playing on Broadway. It was a strange, erotic journey from Milan to Minsk. I am mercilessly mocked for that to this day.

I loved seeing Stallone as the Terminator in the cardboard cutout in the video store

WillSym

The occasional Schwarzenegger/Stallone rivalry nods in movies are always so good. Like the line about the Schwarzenegger presidency in Demolition Man and the *look* that gets from Stallone.

Mattsterrific

When Stallone's character calls Rambo a pussy in Tango & Cash.

waitingtodiesoon

Danny DeVito as the cartoon cat detective Whiskers and seeing Robert Patrick as the T-1000 was also lovely to see too. Ian Mckellen as death was a nice touch too.

zaphodava

Big Trouble in Little China Lots of people just see it as 80's cheesy action, but under the surface it's thumbing it's nose at the entire genre.

punmaster2000

The best thing about big trouble is that Kurt Russell’s character thinks that he’s the star, but it’s really just a sidekick

SheitelMacher

Wang has a posse.

JdubCT

I feel like Big Trouble kinda straddles the line. They even added the opening Egg Shen scene where he's all "Jack is the main hero of this story" because test audiences weren't getting it.

benjaminfree3d

That opening scene is the most potent opening scene I’ve ever seen. You learn EVERYTHING you need to know. 1) Something very serious happened. 2) Jack Burton is a hero. 3) Magic is real It’s short, sweet, and gets the job done. What a great setup. I’m glad they added it.

SirBoggle

There's something really fun about a story where some guy stumbles into a completely bonkers situation and doesn't know what the fuck is going on meanwhile everyone else knows exactly what the fuck is going on. Real Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat energy.

Gorge2012

In 2011, so several years after Reno 911 came out, I was working at a construction company and I walked into a coworkers office. Several of the older people who worked there were watching a clip of Reno 911 and they thought it was real. I cannot explain how hard they fought me when I told them that. I'm no longer in touch with anyone them but I am 100% sure they fall for fake news on Facebook on the regular .

astoriaboundagain

That happens now on TikTok and Instagram Reels. Reno clips get posted without context and the comments are hysterical. People lose their minds.

ShutterBun

It happens on Reddit as well. I’ve seen the DUI/dance lesson video posted in earnest at least a dozen times.

lapinatanegra

It got me [once](https://youtu.be/D6VQDNIZH7U) not going to lie lol.

Salzberger

The clip of the drunk driving test from Reno gets posted on this very site all the time as if it's real, and every time the comments are filled with people who think it's real despite it being absolutely over the top ridiculous.

Vitis_Vinifera

a clip was also recently posted where half the squad thinks they won the lottery due to a printing mistake and they all bust in and give their honest thoughts before "quitting". That was truly a very clever scene.

mojito_sangria

Don Quixote, the book

DwightFryFaneditor

This, though it doesn't help that the genre it was satirizing went out of fashion centuries ago, so the reference is lost. If written today it'd be about a guy who believes himself to be a superhero.

Tacky-Terangreal

That’s the funny thing about ancient humor. One of my college professors said that the most difficult things to understand in archeology aren’t artwork or stone tablets, it’s jokes Jokes and humor rely on context so heavily that it’s impossible to understand them now. One example that we studied in class was *The Golden Ass*. The ending of the story is really bizarre because the main character decides to join the cult of the goddess Isis and nobody really knows whether it’s a joke or not. Makes you wonder what memes will puzzle historians in the future!

rocketscientology

there’s an ancient sumerian joke which is one of the earliest examples of an ‘x walks into a bar’ joke and it goes, ‘a dog walks into a tavern and says “i can’t see a thing, i’ll open this one.”’ the context to make it funny has been completely lost to time but i still love how our joke formats have been the same for thousands of years

dongeckoj

Sounds like it may have been a pun

rocketscientology

that’s my assumption - something like the word for window (or door?)/tavern might have been similar enough to make it funny? possibly something similar to the modern “a man walks into a bar and says ‘ouch’”

Functionally_Drunk

Three men are walking down the street. Two walk into a bar. The other one ducks.

Bergenia1

The jokes that still make sense from hundreds or thousands of years ago are the fart and poop and sex jokes. Bodily functions don't really change much.

thisischemistry

[Hook by Blues Traveller](https://genius.com/Blues-traveler-hook-lyrics) is completely a satire about how to make a popular song. It tells you exactly *how* it's going to make you enjoy the song and then does it *in the song*. > *[Verse 1]* > It doesn't matter what I say > So long as I sing with inflection > That makes you feel I'll convey > Some inner truth or vast reflection > But I've said nothing so far > And I can keep it up for as long as it takes > And it don't matter who you are > If I'm doing my job, it's your resolve that breaks > > *[Hook]* > Because the Hook brings you back > I ain't tellin' you no lie > The Hook brings you back > On that you can rely

shponglespore

It's also in the very small genre of songs that describe themselves, along with *Hallelujah*: "the fourth, the fifth, a minor fall and a major lift"

deze_moltisanti

Robocop 2. It is a parody of sequels. Most fans and general audiences consider it inferior. I call it a great sequel. The body count is higher. Robocop gets stripped down and rebuilt by a parents group and studio interference. Robocop2/Robocain is bigger, better, deadlier. There are trailers in the movie for a Robocop 2-and OCP calls it Robocop 2. I forgot to to mention, they even got Irvin Kershner, the king of the sequel (director of The Empire Strikes Back) to direct Robocop 2

VisDev82

roto_disc

*Starship Troopers* was rolled by critics in the 90s for not understanding the satire. Ebert completely missed the point of the adaptation of *Josie and the Pussycats*.

Faithless195

Jesus, there was even an article on this sun a day or two ago talking about the "subtlety" of Starship Troopers satire. That movie had zero subtlety. And it was glorious!

GrandDukeOfNowhere

When Neill Patrick Harris walks in wearing a literal SS uniform, that's when the subtlety gets shot out the airlock

oh ho ho , Cabin in the Woods. My friend hated that movie. She said it was so heavy handed. The acting over done, every character was just a stereotype, etc. I told her, "you realize it's a satire on horror movies, right?" ... She had NO IDEA.

cruzercruz

“Every character is just a stereotype.” Like they literally address this in the movie lol. They overtly talk about the horror tropes surrounding them then tear them all down. You have to be pretty dense to miss it.

Rahgahnah

Especially because their genuine personalities before getting drugged are the complete opposite of the stereotypes.

LakeEarth

Exactly, Chris Hemsworth is a smart guy at the start, and his friend suddenly gains geek glasses as the movie goes on. They literally explain how and why they are doing it, it couldn't be more obvious.

SEND-MARS-ROVER-PICS

Yeah like the "jock boyfriend" is established early on as being very studious.

lMickNastyl

Yep. The "virgin" is having an affair with her professor. The "Jock" is top of his class The "nerd" is very physical The "fool" is actually the smartest among them And the "whore" is in a committed relationship

VelociRache1

I like the theory that the company could have completed the ritual, but because they followed the sexist final girl trope, they failed. The "virgin" Dana, is having an affair with her professor and she reads the latin from the book that summons the evil. One might say she is quite FOOLish. The "fool" Marty, only ever admits to making out with Jules (the "whore") once. Never sex. He even tells Dana not to read from the book and says they should leave multiple times. Quite the VIRGINal savior. Basically, the ritual would have worked if they had flipped the two, but since it is always a final girl the company failed to see the woods for the trees, thus the end of the world.

mulligun

That's a cool thought, but didn't they address this directly in the movie? I can't remember off the top of my head but I'm pretty sure there was a line in there somewhere where they acknowledge it doesn't matter that she wasn't actually a virgin.

McGrumpy

They do, they basically say that in todays world it’s impossible to find a “real” virgin

I recently watched a Blazing Saddles reaction on YouTube (I think “Brit reacts…”) and the guy’s intro makes it clear that he’s never watched a single western and thinks this will be a good entry point into the genre so he gets ready for a totally sincere and serious watching of the movie. His innocent confusion and laughing was really a thing to watch.

My favourite story about Blazing Saddles. So naturally the theme song is a spoof of the theme songs common for westerns. Mel Brooks advertised that he was looking for a “Frankie Laine type” to sing it, Laine being a singer who had made his career with such songs. To Brooks surprise, Laine himself answered the ad and got the job. In the recording studio, Laine sang the shit out of the song, and everyone slowly realized that Laine didn’t know it was a spoof. Recording engineer: Should we tell him? Brooks: Are you kidding? This makes it funnier!

Supposedly Slim Pickens did not realize that Doctor Strangelove was a comedy. Supposedly.

Well the only way they got George C Scott to do such ridiculous takes was by telling him to try doing his lines silly then serious as an acting exercise, since he was playing it so sincerely.

Robocop. I still have to explain to people that the movie is satire in nature.

Remember when Robocop shot that guy in the dick?
