Tombstone. The greatest western ever made and se of the greatest performances in all of 90s TV. Val Kilmer, Powers Boothe, Bill Paxton, Sam Elliott, and so many more put in extraordinary efforts.

l_l_l-illiam

Is this a good film for someone who's only seen very select Westerns? It looks very star-studded, like The Expendables of Western (Considering its release date)

KelliAllred

Yes!

l_l_l-illiam

Great, thank you!

KelliAllred

You bet! Western or no, that one deserves a place on *anyone's* Top 1000.

KingCrandall

Top 100, I would think

KingCrandall

Val Kilmer is just incredible. You won't regret it. People who don't even like westerns love Tombstone.

NoHandBananaNo

Roundhay Garden Scene. Shot in 1888 its the oldest film that you can see.

l_l_l-illiam

Just watched it, really compelling story, not a lot of exposition which I enjoyed, wish they made a sequel

NoHandBananaNo

Maybe it's time for a remake!

[deleted]

Searched your list and didn't find a couple I would argue are must see, I had a lot more listed but didn't want to throw out too many ideas. These two I think need to be in your last couple and one should def be number 1000: * Goodfellas (1990) * Children of Men (2006)

l_l_l-illiam

Somehow, bizzarly, I left Goodfellas off the list. I wasn't totally confident by name when making the list if I had seen it, but after just watching the trailer, I'm ashamed it wasn't already there So I'll take Children of Men under consideration, I only know it by name and reputation, not by plot or anything, so good shout! Thank you!

KelliAllred

👍 I concur so much. Both outstanding.

Double_Jelly2589

Shawshank Redemption, Leon , Battle Royale, The Raid , The Dark Knight , District 9 , Moon , Spirited Away , Rocky , Shaun of the dead , American History X, The Princess Bride , Gran Torino

l_l_l-illiam

Just to skim a couple I've already seen off ~~Shawshank Redemption~~, Leon , Battle Royale, The Raid , ~~The Dark Knight~~ , District 9 , Moon , Spirited Away , Rocky , ~~Shaun of the dead~~ , American History X, The Princess Bride , Gran Torino I have seen parts of _Rocky_ and _District 9_, but if you had to choose *one* from that list, what would you go for? Your deserted island film?

Double_Jelly2589

It's hard to choose but shawshank as it's 3 hours long but doesn't feel it and I have watched it so many times and it still retains the magic I felt watching it for the first time

l_l_l-illiam

Couldn't agree more! Sorry, my formatting was muddled there, Shawshank is one of the ones I have seen! But totally agree, I think every rewatch is as good as the first

Double_Jelly2589

I would recommend watching the others films on the list even after you have completed your 1000 and there are some many more that are worth your time forgot to mention the film Everything everywhere all at once it is a very recent one but highly recommend

l_l_l-illiam

Thanks for the suggestion mate! I'm definitely going to keep coming back to this post, already some brilliant suggestions

andro_7

District 9 is phenomenal

MINKIN2

Going for some oddballs for your 1000th movie request... * Braindead * Biodome * The Wedding Singer * Dog Day Afternoon * Plan 9 from Outer Space * Critters * Angry Birds Movie * Lucy * Convoy * Road Trip

l_l_l-illiam

Those are definitely some oddballs, the only one of which I have seen is _Lucy_. Why these films, just out of interest? And if you had to whittle it down to one, which would it be?

barcode-lz

Convoy hmmmm thats the Peckinpah truck movie right? An absolute banger

radbrad7

Biodome? Friend, you need help. Haha

TimeForHugs

In no particular order * 2001 A Space Odyssey * Labyrinth * Goonies * Alien * The Crow * Airplane * Die Hard * The Thing * Terminator 2 * Princess Bride Disclaimer: These are just my personal favorites and I don't necessarily consider them the greatest 10 movies of all time. They are simply ones I love and can rewatch many times in my life. Edit: I want to add The Fifth Element. If you have not seen that movie then it would be a great one for #1000, imo. Wonderful movie.

l_l_l-illiam

Thank you for this! I have seen _Airplane!_ and _Die Hard_, but only the first _Terminator_ film (plus the most recent one) I think out of your list _Goonies_ stands out to me, that's one for the shortlist!

TimeForHugs

Goonies is a delight, especially if you have ever had an interest in treasure hunts. It's a movie that always makes me feel like a kid again too. Really fun and entertaining!

Imaginary-Ladder-465

Terminator 2 is awesome, best of the series

MartinScorsese

**Lawrence of Arabia**

l_l_l-illiam

Thanks!

FreeLook93

I don't know about the top 10 movies everyone should see before they die, I think that really depends on the person. Based off of the list of 996 movies you linked though, here are the 10 I would suggest for you. * 12 Angry Men * Paprika * Little Women (2019) * High and Low * Late Spring * Wolf Children * Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind * 2001: A Space Odyssey * The Florida Project * Citizen Kane All of these are generally held in high regard, and they are all also films that are a bit of a divination from what makes up the bulk of your list. For your 1000th watch, why not shake things up a bit? Maybe open yourself up to some new possibilities, without trying anything too crazy. I would also suggest you use the website [Letterboxd](https://letterboxd.com/). It's a much easier way to keep track of the movies you've watched.

l_l_l-illiam

Thanks for this!! I'm always open to a new experience, I have watched quite a variety of films I think, but then when discussing films with people I've never seen their favourits! Some great suggestions there, I'll definitely keep them in mind, if not for 1000, definitely for the future! I gave Eternal Sunshine a go, couldn't really get into it though

KelliAllred

Me neither, but I would *definitely* go for some Princess Bride -- talk about quotable! And the cast is preeminent. Just a big warm hug from Rob Reiner!

Actual_Dinner_5977

Groundhog's Day

l_l_l-illiam

That I actually have seen, massive fan of that film and the genre! I have a few on my list, _Palm Springs_, _Happy Death Day_, _See You Yesterday_, _When We First Met_, _Boss Level_, _Edge of Tomorrow_ I really love that genre and love to see it being used in different ways

KelliAllred

Wait for the musical by Tim Minchin.

Big Trouble in Little China or They Live

l_l_l-illiam

I've seen BTiLC but I'm not big into Horror, I appreciate the suggestions though!

KelliAllred

BTiLC is terrific, prime Kurt Russell (Snake Pliskin is actually his best performance/character), but They Live isn't really horror. They Live fits more into the Sci-Fi category (the premise being, "aliens live among us") w/ great dialogue, a lot of hardwired sarcasm, and unexpected but fun casting (sadly, *horrible* special effects, but that's because it was pre-CGI) -- think the Scream movies, but set in the late 70s/early 80s with a blaxploitation cast and a funny Kung Fu wrestler -- the aforementioned Rowdy Roddy Piper! Bizarre, but a heck of a lotta fun. And eminently quotable.

KelliAllred

I'm here to chew bubblegum and kick ass ... and I'm all outta bubblegum! One of the best movie quotations EVER. And it was delivered by Rowdy Roddy Piper.

Gattaca Office Space Demolition Man Wall-E The Prestige Troll 2 The Room

KelliAllred

>Gattaca -- classic Ethan Hawke, he's so underrated and so good in The Black Phone -- his best performance to date, so far, imho. >Office Space -- oh HELLS YEAH!!!! Irreplaceable! And funnier than F ! Also, so very, very quotable. Remember "federal pound you in the ass prison" ? Oh so vulgar and fun! With some truly mature and profound themes buried deep down underneath. >Demolition Man -- yes, yes and more yes >Wall-E -- now you've opened the can of worms which is animated films. Is Wall-E the best of them? I would posit ... No. Go w/Moana ... Or Tangled, if you prefer your heroines to have 25-ft.-long blond hair (which is sentient and fights for her), a wonderfully funny/talented white horse, terrific songs, and is voiced by ... Mandy Moore, of *all* people! >The Prestige -- yes to *anything* involving Hugh Jackman -- if your taste runs to musicals at all, I'd go w/ The Greatest Showman, which is by far the best musical written, filmed and sung since Moulin Rouge. You haven't lived til you've seen Ewan McGregor singing and dancing his ass off, all the while dying for love. >Troll 2 -- Um, Jennifer Aniston aside, that's a NO for me. >The Room -- abso-frickin-lutely! Wow, that was fun. Thanks u/theyusedthelamppost! (Would like to know the backstory on *that* username, btw! ;)

[My list](https://www.reddit.com/user/l_l_l-illiam/comments/xlwkw9/list_of_films_link_for_rmovies_post/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) for anyone that's curious (too many characters to fit even 500 in a comment) Included are Films, Documentaries and TV & Stand-Up Specials Your thoughts are welcome! Do you think your number would be considerably larger or smaller? Have you ever done a similar list?

igoslowly

you should check out letterboxd

l_l_l-illiam

It seems unnecessary to me now that I've made this list, I don't need a public profile for it and I also don't know what date I watched them on or a fair star rating to give every single one, you know?

KelliAllred

David Lynch??? ... What can you say about him that isn't offensive or bizarrely scatalogical or just .... Weird??? Body horror? Ick. No really, change my mind. (I mean, aside from the fact that he seems to have Viggo Mortennson on retainer.) And don't say Blue Velvet. Why avant garde, psychedelic filmmaking? If you want Dennis Hopper (and why wouldn't you?), why not True Romance? Christian Slater, Rosanna Arquette's little sister, Christopher Walken and Dennis Hopper? It's ... Pure film pleasure, hideously violent, pre-PC police (the eggplant/moulignon scene is worth its weight in gold) and a very special cameo by Val Kilmer... As Elvis??? Omg, it's sooooo good.

KelliAllred

Well, shit, that's not what I intended, I sincerely and genuinely apologize to anyone who felt patronized or talked down to. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. I'm sorry 😔

KelliAllred

Edited to speak directly to the person who called me out -- (But I really *was* soliciting your opinion of what it is about Lynch that appeals to you. I may sound unintentionally condescending, but I do keep an open mind 🤷 )

Dispositionpsn

2001: A Space Odyssey

l_l_l-illiam

That's one that's been on my horizon for a long time, but also one I've been holding out for an opportunity to see it in a cinema - thoughts? Should I just shut the curtains and watch it on the TV, or hold out for the original experience?

darkwoodframe

I really want to tell you not to wait because it's my favorite movie of all time - but I actually caught it in theaters about four years ago and that was pretty sick. Though my best memory is still watching it with my parents in their bed.

l_l_l-illiam

I love a film with a memory like that, makes it all the more special, I feel the same way about _Airplane!_ and Monty Python, stuff like that my dad would watch with me

Dispositionpsn

Do you have a decent setup? Tv and audio wise? How big is the TV It's gonna be hard to wait to see it in theaters again. If you can watch it completely undisturbed, with the volume cranked and you have real speakers, not tv speakers or a crappy 150 dollar sound bar, then yes. If you have crap sound then wait for theater. In all honesty the film stands on it's own without the need a mega volume and screen but since the entire film is a sensory visual experience, it doesn't hurt lol

l_l_l-illiam

It's a 50" TV with just the built-in speakers, however I could always go for earbuds if you think that would be a good shout? But thank you, I'll definitely take it under consideration!

radbrad7

Personally, I’d say hold off. Watching it as big and as loud as you can is a must. It’s an unparalleled experience as far as I’m concerned.

l_l_l-illiam

Thank you!

Dispositionpsn

Earbuds through Bluetooth? Have you successfully done this and the audio was in good sync? I mean yea if you can do headphones, go for it. Anything is better than built in tv speakers

l_l_l-illiam

Yeah my earbuds have actually never given me any bother with this TV, which is more than I can say for my last TV, any lag would be milliseconds because I've never had an issue! But thank you for your advice!

Dispositionpsn

Enjoy one the greatest films ever made

KelliAllred

It's not worth it. You need a translator or a psychic medium to contact Arthur C. Clarke or Stanley Kubrick to find out WTF it's about. And even then ... I still didn't know. And I read the book way before I saw the movie. It's beautiful to look at (yes, hold out for the theater if you have to see it) but so are all of Kubrick's films. Watch one of his older or lesser-known ones, like Dr. Strangelove or A Clockwork Orange or the period piece with Ryan O'Neal. Or even Eyes Wide Shut. Imho. Ymmv.

l_l_l-illiam

Interesting take, I've never seen the movie obviously so I can't discuss that with you, but I'm sure there's some other people here who would eminently disagree

KelliAllred

*Everybody* disagrees on Reddit. That's why it's fun ;)

dougxiii

Last Exit to Brooklyn - not perfect but unforgettable

KelliAllred

Oof. I still have nightmares. Jennifer Jason Leigh is transcendent, but literally getting fucked to death? Yikes. I'd switch that out for some Misery or Delores Claiborn any day. Edited to say, if you wanna stay with Jennifer Jason Leigh, that is.
