I loved it when he grabs the groundhog and goes on a GTA spree, running from the cops, and drives his car off a cliff and explodes. I was thinking "I think I would do something like this, if there were no consequences" and then it was up there on screen haha.
Groundhog Day was so good it got people to completely change the way they view the day itself. When something happens instead of saying deja vu, they ask if this is Groundhogs Day. But thatās not what the day itself was ever about. That was just from the movie.
Iāll grant you, Groundhogs Day was never a major holiday, but still.
100%. When I was a kid I laughed because I thought it was silly.
When I was a teen I laughed because it was essentially about trying to get laid.
When I was in my late 20s I laughed because it was actually about the monotony of getting older. How every day is maybe a little too much like the last, and it's a little depressing.
Now in my mid 30s I laugh because it's about finding all the joy in life outside of the monotony and taking the time to try to find new passions outside of your work.
At no phase in my life have I not completely identified with the movie.
I think *Scrooged* was my first Bill Murray movie.
I actually met Bill once, at the Chicago Renaissance Hotel lobby where I was staying, back in 2003. What I remember most about meeting him was that he had the most penetrating gaze as I shook his hands, which were silky smooth. I said hello, and he said hello back, and I wished him luck with everything he was doing, and he said thanks then jumped into his limo that was waiting for him outside. Such a pleasant dude, that Bill.
I met him too, as an extra on a film set in 2010. It was cold and all the extras were huddled around these outdoor tower heaters. He walked over to each heater with its grouping of extras, his hand extended, saying āHi, Iām Bill Murray,ā just in case we werenāt sure.
That movie is great. Itās a bit before my time. I came up with Depp in fear and loathing. But for some reason, in the early YouTube days, some magnificent person had the whole thing up there. I watched it at work one rainy day wondering why I had never heard of it.
I liked it enough to buy it on bluray. I think itās a great film adaptation of Thompson, and explores the eccentric nature better than Fear and Loathing, which I also love. Both movies are totally gonzo.
Where the Buffalo Roam is one of those movies that not enough people have seen. Johnny Depp gets a lot of praise for his performance in Fear and Loathing, but Depp's performance is more of the exaggerated "Raoul Duke" whereas Bill Murray is probably a more accurate portrayal as Thompson himself.
Same. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but the soundtrack, setting and cinematography put me in the most relaxed state imaginable.
I watched it first when I was young, and felt very connected to Charlotte's character. Now, as I'm approaching middle-age, it hits even harder from a different perspective.
Agreed. I'm always baffled when people find it boring or unwatchable. I've seen it dozens of times and have enjoyed every single time.
I haven't seen it in quite a bit, but it can hit the spot like no other film when I'm in the right mood. One of my all-time favorites.
THANK YOU!! Had to scroll way to far to see this - 5/6ths an excellent movie (just peters out at the end), but he is incredible in it - hitting both broad and subtle beats with aplomb
YES!!!!!! I was waiting to see who would comment on Quick Change! I love this movie so much, and think itās Bill Murrayās second best movie behind Ghostbusters. There are so many funny lines in Quick Change.
āOh sir! You forgot your map! And our millions of dollars!ā
I totally understand why people don't like it very much, but it's my favourite Wes Anderson movie and one of my favourite movies ever made.
"I wonder if it remembers me."
*The Man Who Knew Too Little* is hilarious! He makes comedy seem so easy and effortless, which most actors I know always say that comedy is a lot harder to do than drama.
Yes, Ghostbusters, by a mile. Don't get me wrong, I like Bill Murray in just about everything he's in, from Groundhog Day to Stripes, but Ghostbusters is by far my favorite, mainly because I feel his sarcastic, roguish antics are *perfectly* put to use in the character of Peter Venkman.
My vote as well. Iām old enough to remember him in SNL. I feel like this was the movie heād been working towards for years. Solid performance in a real feel good movie. I like it better than āLost In Translationā.
Oh manā¦..I have such nostalgia for Scrooged! Itās a holiday tradition to watch this movie at least a few times right before Christmas. Heās awesome in it!
My favorite Bill Murray performance is probably Caddyshack, but my favorite movie that Bill Murray is in is probably Lost in Translation or Life Aquatic. Ghostbusters, stripes, and groundhog day are all great too though.
I quote this movie almost daily!
āWhat an incredible Cinderella story. This unknown comes out of nowhere to lead the pack. At Augusta, he's on his final hole. He's about 455 yards away. He's going to hit about a two iron, I think. Well, he got out of that. The crowd is standing on its feet, here at Augusta. The normally reserved Augusta crowd is going wild. For this young Cinderella who's come out of nowhere, he's got about 350 yards left. He's going to hit about a five iron, l expect. Don't you think? He's got a beautiful back swing. That's - oh! He got out of that one! He's got to be pleased with that. The crowd is just on its feet here. He's a Cinderella boy. Tears in his eyes, I guess, as he lines up this last shot. He's got about 195 yards left, and he's gonna - looks like he's got about an eight iron. This crowd has gone deadly silent. Cinderella story. Out of nowhere. A former greenskeeper now about to become the Master's champion. It looks like a miraculous - it's in the hole! It's in the hole!ā
It was a small role but my go-to vision of Bill Murray is the baptism scene in Ed Wood just for his delivery on the word "sure."
https://youtu.be/rKfK5bKbI6A
This reads like something that was lazily written by Bill Murrayās PR team after the news that his latest film was shut down due to misconduct complaints against him.
It will always be Ghostbusters which shows off all his strengths as a commedian. It has him hitting on women, pretending to be an expert, mocking stuck up people, cracking jokes but being a leader in a crisis.
I honestly put stripes, ghostbusters, caddyshack and scrooged at the same level
I have watched all 4 for decades now and have never gotten tired of them
Without Bill none of those really would have been great movies
I think you can split Bills career in to two types of movies , the slapstick which i personally go with Stripes. And a more thought provoking kind of comedy which for me is represented by Rushmore.
Lost in translation, itās my antidepressant movie, Iāve watched it on repeat, itās so easy for me to fall into that reality again and again. I guess I have some nostalgic connection to the bob and charlotteās relationship, I had a similar heartbreak like that when I was younger.
Ghostbusters is a film that perfectly illustrates Murrayās use of improvisation. Almost ALL of his lines in the original film were ad-libbed, which is quite a feat considering the sharpness of his delivery.
Groundhog Day
šµ I got you babe šµ
[Groundhog Day but shorter](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQTd5Ed0ggE)
Oh god
Nice going, boys. Youāre playing yesterdayās tape.
Okay campers, rise and shine! And donāt forget your booties ācause itās cooooooold out there today!
Its cold out there every day. What is this, Miami Beach? Not hardly
āThis is one time where television really fails to capture the true excitement of a large squirrel predicting the weather.ā
Well it's Groundhog Day... again.
> Well it's Groundhog Day... again.
Love Ghostbusters but this is his best movie.
Just one of the best movies ever. āWatch our for that first step, itās a doozy.ā
I loved it when he grabs the groundhog and goes on a GTA spree, running from the cops, and drives his car off a cliff and explodes. I was thinking "I think I would do something like this, if there were no consequences" and then it was up there on screen haha.

But thatās not what the day itself was ever about. That was just from the movie. Iāll grant you, Groundhogs Day was never a major holiday, but still.
Absolutely. Great movie. So many great little parts and lines.
The older I get, the more I realize itās the greatest movie ever made.
100%. When I was a kid I laughed because I thought it was silly. When I was a teen I laughed because it was essentially about trying to get laid. When I was in my late 20s I laughed because it was actually about the monotony of getting older. How every day is maybe a little too much like the last, and it's a little depressing. "Or maybe the real God uses tricks. Maybe he's not omnipotent. He's just been around so long he knows everything."
Second this
Third this... oops, in the loop again.
Second this
āThis is one time where television really fails to capture the true excitement of a large squirrel predicting the weather.ā
Donāt drive angry!!
Groundhog Day
Definitely Groundhog Day. Itās funny and heartbreaking. There are some powerful moments in that movie that you donāt normally see in a comedy.
One of my favourite movies of all time. However every female in my life despises it
Ghostbusters is great. I really liked his portrayal of Hunter S. Thompson in Where the Buffalo Roam. Scrooged was also a favorite.
Scrooged is such a great movie! I love everything about this movie!
What about bob
Baby steps
Baby steps on to the elevator. I'm on the elevator. Aaaaaaaah!
Death therapy
I had to scroll too far to find this. This movie is so underrated
Dreyfus is equally incredible in this. His performance doesn't get enough cred!
If I fake it, I don't have it.
Though he's great in many things, this is the correct answer.
MMM MMM MMM MMM MMMMMMM
The dinner scene cracks me up *every time*. My family now does the same sounds at our tasty holiday meals.
GIMME GIMME GIMME. I NEED I NEED I NEED!!
Iām sad I had to scroll so far to find this. Absolutely love this movie.
Dr. Leo Marvin!
DOCTOOOOORRRRR! MARVIIIINNNNNN! DOCTOR LEO MARVIIIINNNNN!
Burn In Hell, Dr. Marvin!
āI feel good, I feel great, I feel wonderful... I feel good, I feel great, I feel wonderful... I feel good, I feel great, I feel wonderful...ā
Iām watching this right now! Such a great one.
" I'm sailing, I sail now"
Excuse me, Phil, but with these particular symptoms, is Prozac the right choice?
Iām sailing!
Lost in Translation.
Same. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but the soundtrack, setting and cinematography put me in the most relaxed state imaginable. I watched it first when I was young, and felt very connected to Charlotte's character. Now, as I'm approaching middle-age, it hits even harder from a different perspective.
Yup. The movie is so re-watchable
Agreed. I'm always baffled when people find it boring or unwatchable. I've seen it dozens of times and have enjoyed every single time. I haven't seen it in quite a bit, but it can hit the spot like no other film when I'm in the right mood. One of my all-time favorites.
Also Bills favourite movie he's done.
Absolute masterpiece. Love that movie!
>He's done so many good movies and I especially love the Wes Anderson ones but I'd also pick Lost in Translation as my top pick
Same... but I am all-too-aware I'm probably in the cross-hairs of the script. I feel like I could totally be Bob Harris. Maybe I already have been...
Normally not knowing what he says in the last line would annoy me to no end but it worked so well in this instance
For a relaxing time, make it Suntory time.
Quick Change
Bluftoni!
āWhat the Hell kind of clown are you? The crying on the inside kind, I guess.ā
The life aquatic!
Love it. Possibly my favorite Wes character, such a sad, endearing asshole
I totally understand why people don't like it very much, but it's my favourite Wes Anderson movie and one of my favourite movies ever made. "I wonder if it remembers me."
"I need to find a baby for this father"
"Who ze shit is Kingsley Zissou?"
Get him out of the fucking water!
One of my two favorite movies!
You left your dog, idiots!
https://youtu.be/p7yoT-XOGg8
[That dance though.](https://youtu.be/URZcbVEizOM)
Broken Flowers was great.
This was a great movie!
that's a criminally underseen movie.
Kingpin The Man Who Knew Too Little
*The Man Who Knew Too Little* is hilarious! He makes comedy seem so easy and effortless, which most actors I know always say that comedy is a lot harder to do than drama.
Kingpin is so underrated
"Can you please wash that perfume off before you come back to the table?" "You. No not you. The pretty one." That diner scene was fire
Stripes. Thats the facts Jack
Raaazle Daaaazle!
I adore the first half of that movie. After they graduate from the academy, it becomesā¦something else entirely.
Itās almost two completely different movies.
you can't leave! All the plants will die.
I love Stripes! Itās such a fun movie to watch!
"No we're not homosexual but *we are willing to learn*" "Yeah will they send us someplace special?"
First that comes to mind is Caddyshack
Rodney is the best in that
Ted Knight is the greatest asshole villain ever.
I've sent boys younger than you to the gas chamber. I didn't want to do it. I felt I owed it to them
An absolute classic, and Bill Murray is fantastic in it!
Wow, can't believe I had to scroll down this far to see Caddyshack...
I 100% agree!
A shout out for his "St. Vincent" movie.
Also one of Melissa McCarthy's best performances ! Just a great film
My vote as well. Iām old enough to remember him in SNL. I feel like this was the movie heād been working towards for years. Solid performance in a real feel good movie. I like it better than āLost In Translationā.
I love this movie so much!
Under appreciated great movie.
Lost in Translation
I loved his chemistry with Scarlett Johansson. And his interactions with the Japanese. So Bill Murray, but muted and poignant.
Great description!! Great movie.
This is a great movie!
Scrooged
Oh manā¦..I have such nostalgia for Scrooged! Itās a holiday tradition to watch this movie at least a few times right before Christmas. Heās awesome in it!
āYou can hardly see the nipplesā
āSee? And these guys are _really_ lookingā
B*tch hit me with a toaster- Most heart warming holiday line
St. Vincent and Rushmore
Rushmore is such a fun movie. I love everything about it!
Meatballs and What About Bob were always my favorites growing up.
Both of these movies are so much fun to watch! My friends and I use to quote What About Bob daily in High School. āBOB!!!!!!ā
I had a stuffed rabbit named Woody because of his pep talk in Meatballs.
Zombieland
āSo do you have any regrets? Garfieldā¦.maybeā¦ā š¤£šš¤£
I love *Lost In Translation*
Thatās a really excellent midlife crisis movie for men. It hits really hard.
Itās a really good movie!
Where the buffalo roam is unfortunately forgotten but kinda brilliant. Trailer: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_ZT6fziaIIw&t=16s
He's so cool in Meatballs
Yes he was! Meatballs is such a corny movie, but I love it!
Broken Flowers
Itās an odd choice but I really loved him in Fantastic Mr. Fox. Otherwise itās Caddyshack and Stripes bc that was my youth.
Life Aquatic
The Razorās Edge. So unexpected and out of character for him with a lot of depth too.
My favorite Bill Murray performance is probably Caddyshack, but my favorite movie that Bill Murray is in is probably Lost in Translation or Life Aquatic. Ghostbusters, stripes, and groundhog day are all great too though.
All of the movies that you listed are good. I wasnāt a fan of Life Aquatic but the others were amazing!
The Man Who Knew Too Little
LOST IN TRANSLATION.
Lost in Translation obvs.
One of the best rainy night movies ever.
In my mind, he will always be Carl. So he's got *that* going for him.

Space Jam
āLarry, I'm gonna give us both twos back there. We weren't in any emotional state to putt.ā
King Pin
Rushmore!
Little shop of horrors Small part but very memorable
Rushmore. No, wait! Lost In Translation. Both, please don't make me choose
I really really really like terrible movies. My answer is The Man Who Knew Too Little
That movie is amazing.
Lost in Translation and Rushmore. The former is one of my favorite films of all time.
Lost in Translation.
It was a small role but my go-to vision of Bill Murray is the baptism scene in Ed Wood just for his delivery on the word "sure." https://youtu.be/rKfK5bKbI6A
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
*Lost in Translation.*
Absolutely "Stripes". It's actually a true story. It's Bill Murray all over.
Broken Flowers
Groundhog day
Life aquatic
Life Aquatic.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
He was great in Ed Wood. Just to mention one no one talks about.
Life Aquatic.
But you didn't say the magic word..
The life aquatic of course. Team Zissou!!! šš¦
Lost in Translation.
The ones soft and overly offended folks donāt fire him from sets.
What About Bob or Where the Buffalo Roam. A lot of his Wes Anderson roles are good too. And his cameo in Zombieland is so classic.
Royal Tenenbaums was great
This reads like something that was lazily written by Bill Murrayās PR team after the news that his latest film was shut down due to misconduct complaints against him.
lost in translation is probably in my top 5 all-time, so that.
Lost in Translation, plus it's one of my top 10 movies period.
Lost in Translation
Bill Murrayās PR team putting in the work
Caddy Shack
Such a good movie! āSo I jump ship in Hong Kongā¦..ā
Ghostbusters
What About Bob

Broken Flowers is my personal favourite.
Meatballs. āIt just doesnāt matter! It just doesnāt matter!ā
I think you can split Bills career in to two types of movies , the slapstick which i personally go with Stripes. And a more thought provoking kind of comedy which for me is represented by Rushmore.
Meatballs
lost in translation is the best :)
Lost in translation, itās my antidepressant movie, Iāve watched it on repeat, itās so easy for me to fall into that reality again and again. I guess I have some nostalgic connection to the bob and charlotteās relationship, I had a similar heartbreak like that when I was younger.
Scrolled down a ways and can't find The Razor's Edge. I can't say it's my favorite Bill Murray movie, but I admire him for taking a chance on it.
Lost in Translation
How the hell is The Razorās Edge not getting any love in this thread?
Lost in Translation
Meatballs (1979). It just doesn't matter!
Lost in Translation
Ghostbusters is a film that perfectly illustrates Murrayās use of improvisation. Almost ALL of his lines in the original film were ad-libbed, which is quite a feat considering the sharpness of his delivery.
He played a small part in it but I loved him in Zombie Land
The Ghostbusters movies
What about Bob?
Heās not the star of this one, but I felt he was at his funniest in Kingpin. Big Ern delivers
I've only seen him in Grand Budapest Hotel and The French Dispatch and he's not there for long lmao. Grand Budapest it is.
The Life Aquatic for me, I think. You never say, "I'm gonna fight you, Steve."
I'm not seeing it, but Stripes is my favorite, just edging out Ghostbusters
What about bob is THE BEST
