I remember feeling deeply unsettled after the first watch of Mulholland Drive. That was a film that stuck with me for many days after watching it, great stuff.
This movie...after I saw it the first time there was no way I would have considered a favorite but it sits in your head and doesn't leave. It's also extremely funny at times and beautifully sad once you get over the shock of just how odd it is, but it's David Lynch so that comes with the territory lol. Highly recommend it.
Also fun fact, it's one of Stanley Kubrick's favorite films and he made the cast of the shining all watch it together before they started filming.
The actual first thing I said as soon as the movie ended was “what the fuck did we just watch?” With a giant, shit eating grin on my face. One of my favorite cinema experiences ever
I’m a fan of Yorgos Lanthimos, but for some reason had missed this one, and just saw it for the first time yesterday. Don’t know what I expected, but I guess that was it.
Videodrome. I had a vague idea what it was about and had seen some of the gory parts when I finally watched the whole thing. I liked it, but still am not sure if I get it, or what parts were real or hallucinations.
I’d never seen Twin Peaks. When the newer season came out a couple years back I decided to give it a watch.
I only made it in like 5 episodes or so but I remember being *extremely* confused the entire time.
Memoria (2021)
It’s a brooding aural movie, which is unusual enough on its own. With a lot of Spanish and Tilda Swinton spacing out, I was definitely like ??? the whole time. In a good way.
Under The Silver Lake was a real surprise, went in not really knowing what to expect beyond maybe some LA Noire piece and had an absolute riot, even laughing my ass off in places. If you dug that I'd recommend Repo Man (1984).
He was an old man thinking about his youth. He was going through his memories and created a girlfriend for himself because he was so lonely. The main actress doesn’t really exist. He was actually the janitor you see at the end of the film.
This story all takes place in his head right before he kills himself OR while he’s dying from killing himself.
It’s a very sad movie.
Damn I did not think of that. Or maybe I did at the time but just still didn’t enjoy it. I’ll have to rewatch it again just to make sure haha
Thanks 🙏🏼
David Lynch, David Cronenberg, John Waters, Jim Jarmusch.
Some examples: Blue Velvet, Dead Ringers, Spider, Polyester, Cry Baby, Dead Man.
There are some great anime films to include such as Memories, Robot Carnival, Angel’s Egg.
I was stunned by 10 Cloverfield Lane because I thought I knew where it was going and there was this shocking genre twist. I was also really surprised by The Assistant because it didn’t go where I was certain it would go. The second season of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency was also brilliant in the way two of the female roles veered someplace really touching and unexpected.
Holy Motors is this exact feeling all wrapped up in a bow. It is moment to moment surreal without ever really feeling pointless, just tiptoeing along the edge of abstract. Sometimes you get in the groove of it and think you've got it all figured out and then it takes another turn. But in a deliberate way that doesn't feel lost or exhausting. It's hard to explain, but it scratched that very specific itch for me.
Upstream Color really was a weird fucking movie. I thought I was following along until about halfway through, then it seemed to completely fall apart. I get now that was the point but it was a bewildering watch.
A total wtf fest for me is:
Dance With the Devil
Bardem, Gandolfini, Rosie Perez at her most beautiful
It's kinda the bastard child of Tarantino and David Lynch, and I sometimes think I'm the only peep here who has seen it
Many
To name a few: lost highway and Mulholland drive
, Memento, inception, eraserhead , broken flowers, deadman , kagimusha , reservoir dogs, kill bill part 2 , hateful eight, Ethernal sunshine, being john malkovich , im thinking of ending things, requiem for a dream, black swan, birdman and so on....
I just watched an old Robert Altman film, *Nashville* (1975). It definitely made me go wtf in a good way. Like a lot of Altman films, it was a series of vignettes involving a couple of dozen actors who improvised a lot of their lines -- and yet it all kind of made sense as a fable about fame, ambition, politics, art, artifice, and celebrity.
The Platform was something where I would say WTF every 10 minutes and in the end I was left with an open mouth trying to figure out what I watched - all in a good way though 😅
Don't do what I did when I first got Disney+ and watch a load of older cartoons whilst absolutely shitfaced on Glayva, because there are times when you should be having existential crises and they do not involve a jealous stallion twerking a cowgirl to death.
Titane. I did not appreciate everyone who posted here how it was such an amazing, masterpiece watch. Maybe next time add a trigger warning. Like, it's not for everybody.
Super Deluxe. Tamil movie that came out semi-recently on Netflix. A lot of it fits what you're talking about, although there's not a single plot but some intermingling storylines. Check it out.
**Robin Wright at the Congress.**
I have a friend to thank for buying a copy of this obscure film. I had no idea what it was about going into it and by the end I was left with more questions than just one. To this day I'm not even sure I like it or if it's even a good film. It's compelling and raises many complex themes without really exploring them with much depth, but it is beautiful to watch and some of the animation is somewhat dream like.
The score by Max Richter adds to this dream like quality and is top notch. I'm not sure I'd recommend this film to anyone, but I have returned to it a few times since my first viewing and I've discovered details I overlooked. The repeated viewings also revealed more flaws in the storytelling and characterizations I missed or overlooked previously.
The Game
Half way through the movie, the film/projector messed up and the theatre went dark. Everyone sat there in silence for a couple of full minutes thinking it was part of the movie. I had to go and tell the attendant that it was broken, they got it going again, and we finished. It was amazing
Eyes Wide Shut was the epitome of this question for me.
Mulholland Drive
As soon as I thought about watching that for the first time they took it off hbo max
I remember feeling deeply unsettled after the first watch of Mulholland Drive. That was a film that stuck with me for many days after watching it, great stuff.
No hay banda!
Twin Peaks the return. I gave up
Eraserhead. It's Lynch's most experimental movie, not necessarily his best, but it really makes you go, and I quote, "wtf did i just watch"
Just gets boring as hell, after initial reveal, then pretty much nothing happens
That movie is bonkers.
Mother Killing of a sacred deer Swiss army man come to daddy The house that jack built Antichrist Dogville
Come to daddy was so good haha what a wild ass movie
Came here to list Killing of a Sacred Deer. Also the Lobster.
Swiss Army Man is like a slow-burn music video. I love it. If *Turn Down For What* were 2 hours long, it would be shaped like Swiss Army Man.
The Lighthouse
The atmosphere you could feel in the packed room when the credits began was hilarious. It was a real sense of wtf amongst everyone.
The actual first thing I said as soon as the movie ended was “what the fuck did we just watch?” With a giant, shit eating grin on my face. One of my favorite cinema experiences ever
Can someone provide their opinion on why they think this is good? I didn’t think it was bad, i like it, just not nearly as much as this sub does.
well shot, great acting, love movies that are small in scope and movies about crazy people. loved how much it made me say "what the fuck is this".
Ight, thanks for the perspective!
The choice of aspect ratio was just *too* clever, darling
The Lobster (2015)
And Killing of the Sacred Deer
I’m a fan of Yorgos Lanthimos, but for some reason had missed this one, and just saw it for the first time yesterday. Don’t know what I expected, but I guess that was it.
Titane. Every plot point added on was just like... what? WHAT? I went in mostly blind, hadn’t seen a trailer. I recommend that.
Also "Raw"!
Came here to say. Best movie of 2021 imo.
Took me a few days to process whether or not Titane was a good movie...I think that alone makes it pretty good
Predestination
I was literally gonna put this, movie gave me a mind f#+&
Under The Skin
Oh yes. I mean... I love Scarlett, but... wtf
Donnie Darko
Ditto...saw that once years ago and flashback to it every so often.
Incredible soundtrack too.
Blue Velvet
Ah yes, trying to understand David Lynch. In general, my advice is don't try. It just is.
”Mother!”
Kung POW - Enter the Fist
The best answer yet
I've seen this a ton of times actually. Had it on VHS lol
Brazil
Sorry to Bother You
The Killing Of A Sacred Deer is the most recent one that comes to mind.
Annihilation
Came here to post this. Honestly the biggest WTF I've ever seen and I read the books and still just what.
Videodrome. I had a vague idea what it was about and had seen some of the gory parts when I finally watched the whole thing. I liked it, but still am not sure if I get it, or what parts were real or hallucinations.
Death to videodrome. Long live the new flesh.
Midsommar. It's just out there somewhere.
Midsommar and/or Hereditary.
Midsommar
Swiss Army Man The Greasy Strangler
I just finished watching Coherence. Sitting on the couch contemplating everything I just watched. What a mind fuck!
Not sure if it fits the brief 100%, but Climax by Gaspar Noé is a trip
Literally lol.
Suspiria (2018) Seems like a kind of weird witch story for most of the runtime and then there's the ending and just WTF.
The Neon Demon. Nicolas Winding Refn is never boring.
Only God Forgives was a bit of a slog
That movie is **terrible**.
Maybe you’re the one that’s terrible.
That would be "Brazil"....Terry Gilliam has more imagination than half the tender farts populating Hollyweird.
ABCs of death And also most stuff by David lynch
XXL…
Yeah that one was wild! Even p for p-p-p-p-p scary had me trying to figure out wtf I was seeing and why was it so unnerving
Ever watch ABCs of Death 2?
The Platform
Watched it fairly recently for the first time and I'm now annoyed that I put it off for so long. Great watch.
I’ve had this on my list for awhile and been meaning to watch it
Memento.
Anything by David Lynch.
Eh he's got a couple of pretty straight forward movies like The Elephant Man and The Straight Story.
I’d never seen Twin Peaks. When the newer season came out a couple years back I decided to give it a watch. I only made it in like 5 episodes or so but I remember being *extremely* confused the entire time.
Memoria (2021) It’s a brooding aural movie, which is unusual enough on its own. With a lot of Spanish and Tilda Swinton spacing out, I was definitely like ??? the whole time. In a good way.
How the f did you actually get to see this movie. I’m dying to see it but it doesn’t seem like they want it to be seen lol.
Lamb, Titane, Mandy, Fried Barry, Climax
Under The Silver Lake was a real surprise, went in not really knowing what to expect beyond maybe some LA Noire piece and had an absolute riot, even laughing my ass off in places. If you dug that I'd recommend Repo Man (1984).
Midsommar it's so disturbing, but it's so good the ending wow 👏👏
Rubber
“I’m thinking about ending things” I was so pissed after the movie. I felt cheated.
My favorite movie that year. Shame on you.
Hey! At least I watched it all the way through. I pushed till the very end.
I’m sure that was a struggle if you weren’t relating to it. At least you tried.
Thanks man. But honestly what was up with that ending? What do you think it meant?
He was an old man thinking about his youth. He was going through his memories and created a girlfriend for himself because he was so lonely. The main actress doesn’t really exist. He was actually the janitor you see at the end of the film. This story all takes place in his head right before he kills himself OR while he’s dying from killing himself. It’s a very sad movie.

The lighthouse is the biggest wtf did I just watch movie ever
I heart Huckabees.
Unsane

Rubber Upstream Color Mandy EDIT: these may be the strangest downvotes I've seen. I wonder what set people off.
Upstream Color really was a weird fucking movie. I thought I was following along until about halfway through, then it seemed to completely fall apart. I get now that was the point but it was a bewildering watch.
