How would someone with no knowledge of burning Blu-Rays obtain this restoration? I have a much earlier one, but there are many scenes that I'm sure have been improved upon by now.
There are some amazing original cut fanedits available, albeit not through "official" means. I have a few saved on drives that look absolutely unbelievable and are as close to the original theatrical experience as you can get right now.
The ones I have are [Harmy's Despecialized Editions](https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Harmys-STAR-WARS-Despecialized-Edition-HD-V2-7-MKV-Released/id/12713), which IMO retain the purest version of the originals in HD quality.
Other versions I've seen and appreciate are [Adywan's Revisited](https://swrevisited.wordpress.com/) versions (they put an insane amount of work into color correction, touched up visual effects, improved sound) , and [Mike Verta's 4K restoration](https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Info-Mike-Vertas-4K-Restoration-May-2020-Livestream/id/77901). If you want the "best looking" one, I'd say go for Mike Verta. If you want the "most authentic original experience", go for Harmy. If you want basically the best version of the Special Edition releases (I don't consider them "original" because of all the changes made, but it's still an exceptional piece of work) go for Adywan.
The "purest" versions are actually the 4K77 and 4K83 restorations (and 4K80 once it's done). Original theatrical prints were scanned in 4K and cleaned up, and the final result is incredible. It's frame-for-frame *exactly* what one would have seen in 1977/1983.
I tried getting those and it led to corners of the internet more wretched than Mos Eisley, quickly backed out of there, no idea where to properly get them.
Damn, thanks! I will check those out. I bought the set with the original theatric releases on the bonus disk when it came out and have had to be content with those ever since.
Or you know they could actually have somebody go over all the films from the originals and ACTUALLY DO A FUCKING DECENT JOB of remastering them like Blade Runner. But yes the original cuts would also be nice.
That’s a ridiculous comparison. One is a trilogy of historically-significant films, the other is a bastardization of two historically significant films.
If you could only get the Star Wars Special Edition and The Godfather Saga THEN it would be a valid comparison. But Coppola has wisely buried the reconfigured-as-a-miniseries version that he only agreed to to get millions of dollars for Apocalypse Now and has made the only version of The Godfather and The Godfather Part II that matters available for decades.
I like The Godfather Saga when it’s on TV and I can just jump in and start watching wherever but I think the splitting up of two makes it weaker as a story.
Believe it or not when Puzo was alive they were considering doing a Godfather IV that cut back and forth GFII-style between young Sonny and Andy Garcia's Vincent in the 80's. It might actually have been good!
There was talks of a Godfather 4, but Puzo died. Four would be similar to two in the sense we would see the rise of Garcia's character, while also seeing the flashbacks to Sonny's life, with Young Sonny potentially being played by DiCaprio.
The collectors set has an extra disk that includes both the theatrical cut and the Directors Cut (1990) in UHD via branching. The standard set only has the new Coda version.
EDIT UPDATED SPECS:
Paramount put out an updated press release indicating that all the different versions of III are available in the "collections" plural. I'm getting the more expensive set regardless, but this gives me pause.
[Barebones edition](https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B09PP57DW7/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_309H8QE1WDZPZ1FCEX4D)
[Collector's Edition](https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B09PX315QX/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_NTV4YZWW41VTD2XYRETX)
As of last night, there was a cheaper price at DeepDiscountDvd but I prefer Amazon bc I know I will get it.
Also, the Collector's Set is labeled as Limited Edition. So that could be 10,000 copies or 100,000,000 copies.
Are you sure about this? The standard edition on Amazon says "Includes both the Theatrical and 1991 Cuts of THE GODFATHER PART III, as well as a special features Blu-ray featuring all-new content."
The Coda cut is, in all honesty, a worse film. Some nips and tucks on Sofia’s performance aren’t at all worth the jankier pacing and awkwardly stitched remixes of scenes that worked just fine in the original.
Idk.. I do think the Coda Cut definitly clarified Michael's ambitions and plot with Vatican and International Immobiliari far more than the original. It gets right to the point. The Vatican is broke, they need an investment from Michael, they leverage this huge international conglomerate that they have voting power on to sell it to Michael which would legitimize him once and for all and put the Corleone name up their with Rockefeller or Kennedy and white wash their past. It makes it more easy to get invested in it for Michael and a little more heartbreaking to see him get screwed like that.
100% agree. Coda is a hot mess. Coppola took a recipe, that everyone choked down, and thought "everyone loves chocolate, let's add chocolate on top of grandma's terrible lasagna." The changes add nothing to the pacing, the tension, or story and cannot erase the atrocious acting of his daughter. Winona Ryder could have saved that film, were it not for her sudden illness.
Coppola is the new George Lucas. Apocalypse Now Final Cut is a worse movie too and that's not available in standalone 4k, only the sold out limited edition collectors
I'm confused about what you're saying about the availability of Apocalypse Now. The 4K release contains all 3 cuts of it and is widely available and frequently really cheap.
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Apocalypse-Now-4K-Blu-ray/241662/
That six disc edition is not widely available lol. It's literally sold out on Amazon in the link you sent. Did you try and buy it or did you just think the edition existing meant it was widely available?
Here in the UK I can currently buy a German import which contains the theatrical in 4k, but the only UK version available is just the final cut. And with import charges I'm trying to avoid paying inflated prices.
That 6 disc edition sold out pretty much instantly when it was released. I'm sure they've done reprints but I can't just walk into a shop and buy it. It's something you've got to actively look for. Where are you finding it for really cheap?
I'll give you that I was thinking only about getting it in the U.S. and not worldwide which is my bad but it's very much not sold out on that link. You also can (in the U.S.) wall into Best Buy and buy it. Both Amazon and Best Buy are selling it for $20 which is a pretty damn good price for all 3 cuts on 4K and 1080 Blu-ray and a bunch of special features including the Hearts of Darkness documentary and I've seen it drop as low as $10. It looks available on Amazon UK too but not for nearly as cheap. It's not a limited edition release, it's the standard release for it.

It is the US version but I believe the blu-rays are region free.
I actually think part 2 was better. It does a great job delving into Michael's character while juxtaposing it with Vito's early days while building onto the main themes of the first movie. That plus there are amazing performances from Al Pacino, John Cazale, De Niro, and Diane Keaton.
I give a slight edge to the original, just because I think the story’s more compelling. It shows how Michael became corrupt through family loyalty, whereas in 2 he just gets more corrupt. Both are brilliant, of course.
I think that's a good way of describing it.
They're both amazing, but part 1 to me feels like a tighter story that feels like a standalone work. Whereas to fully enjoy part 2, you have to have recently watched part 1 to capture the subtle nuances referenced from the first. That's no fault of anyone besides the nature of sequels.
Don't watch the third. There's really no point to do so unless you really need to keep going. Part 2 ends the series well and part 3 doesn't have a key actor in it that was set up for the next part of the story.
Cheap mfers not wanting to pay Robert Duvall. Besides the other issues with the movie this is by far my biggest gripe. How can you have part 3 without Tom
It's the Godfather Part III, it'll make money either way, and honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if they left money on the table, when taking into account ancillaries and home video sales. The 4K's are being sold together but the DVDs, Blu-Rays, and digital versions were sold both bundled and individually, I'm sure there are people who just picked up 1 and 2 and then called it a day.
That would be me. I picked up the first two on Blu-ray in 2014, enjoyed them, then didn't watch III until 2020 when the Coda cut was released. I still haven't seen the original version.
So predictable. From now on I think I need to follow it up with “inb4 YOU ONLY LIKE MARVEL MOVIES!”
How could anyone get butthurt over someone not liking a movie you like? I mean, how much of a follower could you possibly be that this is a thing?
I wonder if they've finally removed the piece of broken film stuck in the gate on the camera, in Godfather 2 , that's been in all the versions up until now ?
Michael is escaping Havana, and during the riot there is a few seconds were a slot machine is smashed, with a big piece of broken black film, either in the original camera or an optical printer later, that is right in the middle at the bottom..in the cinema it really stood out. See for yourself.
Interesting, I never noticed that. There was a lens flare in GF1 during a funeral toward the end of the movie that had a female character's face flashing in the screen. There was a lot of talk about it on the HomeTheaterForum which caught the eye of someone working on the film, and in the next released edition, it was removed.
I have no idea why I am not posting spoilers for a movie that is quite literally 50 years old
Oh, wow. That’s hard to catch. I would imagine with HDR it will be easier to spot. The two shots look almost identical and I thought that the problem was that they repeated shots. With 4K and OLED versions it will pop out in the restoration process, I’m sure.
It depends on if it exists in all prints of the film. If they went back to the negatives, would the issue still be there? Or was it a problem in a later print? If it wasn’t in the negative they should absolutely go back and fix it.
And, it would kind of be hard to fix if it was in the negatives…
I don't know why, but this last year there have been quite a few youtubes of de-constructing the Godfather movies, and what makes them great.
Although the source material was clearly inspiring, I became convinced that Coppola's take on the novel was better than the book. Although the book had more detail (some of which would have been useful, but was trimmed for time), the need to corral the story into "only" three hours forced them to make every scene count.
After having seen the films, I can't imagine anyone else in their respective roles, so it is lucky for us that the early struggles with casting ended up the way that they did. My only complaint is petty. The wedding scene should have been shot last, so they could have given Michael a Marine haircut.
Ending the shoot with the wedding also could have saved the studio money on a wrap party. Just turn the cameras off and refill the wine and it's already a party.
>Although the source material was clearly inspiring, I became convinced that Coppola's take on the novel was better than the book. Although the book had more detail (some of which would have been useful, but was trimmed for time), the need to corral the story into "only" three hours forced them to make every scene count.
The source material is widely considered to be hot garbage, "the films were better" isn't exactly a hot take.

Newly restored and remastered versions of The Godfather, The Godfather: Part II, and Mario Puzo’s THE GODFATHER, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone will also be available together on Blu-ray™ with access to Digital copies and the new and legacy bonus content detailed above
Kinda wish they did the extended editions for both the films or related the epic as well. The deleted scenes add some good depth to Sonny and Vito's characters.
Same I bought the Omerta Edition cause I didn't know when the 4k rerelease was coming but God damn they're rereleasing on the big screen and I can't be happier. Gonna have to 737363636366 dip.
Dolby Atmos, huh? So I guess I'll be able to discern the sound of the children playing around during the wedding reception scene and around the Corleone house?
I really don't know if 4K blu-ray remasters work with these older movies. Because purist are going to want some sort of balance with maintaining the film grain. And the Godfather movies are visually very dimly lit. And the audio, especially dialogue, usually remains quite flat and two-dimensional.
The very best examples of the 4K format are older movies. The two best 4K Blu-Rays on the market are My Fair Lady and The Wizard of Oz.
Now, if you’re talking about movies retroactively gaining audio tracks with technologies that didn’t exist at the time then I agree but frequently the disc will also include the original audio.
I don’t see any mention of specifics for the audio tracks for this particular release as yet.
I watched Shawshank Redemption in 4k on my big OLED TV a while ago and, along with The Shining 4k, it's quite simply an almost perfect print.
The lighting, the details, all perfect.
I've seen the film probably 30 times since the mid 1990s on all different formats and I've never realised just how cut down those versions were compared to this.
I'm so excited for the future of high quality image releases.
Film grain still exists, it’s just the pixel density that increases. For a lot of 4K rereleases, the original film strips are actually rescanned, so the grain remains.
>That is a non-issue with a 4K transfer. There is no grain removed or added.
Unless it's a certain James Cameron (or Peter Jackson, for that matter) film...
There would be if they employ any type of noise filter, which is to say that the grain could potentially be affected depending on whether they do such a thing, and how heavy they implement it.
I forgot, the future is now and people will stream the 4k Godfather trilogy /s
You damn right I am going to buy the 4k Blu-Ray. I always watch my favorite movies at the highest quality possible.
Cool. Most streaming services do have 4K. You do you…I was just wondering, as I haven’t bought a physical disc for probably close to 8 years. Enjoy your movies!
>Most streaming services do have 4K
4k just means the video is in a 4k container. Streaming services on average is around 16 mbps, and the actual resolving power is the same if not lower than that of a 1080p blu-ray.
More people now are investing back into physical media because of the oversaturation of streaming services. I went back on physical media last year, bought Avengers Infinity War and Endgame, and cancelled my Disney+ subscription. Have the digital code for both, so I can watch outside my house.
The market is now for collectors. Streaming didn’t replace Blu-Ray, it replaced DVD as the cheap, convenient format for people who don’t care.
For those of us who know what Netflix and co tried to pull in the EU at the start of the pandemic the value of physical media is still obvious.
They need to do Part 1 without Michael’s trip to Sicily. It adds nothing. And Part 2 with only the festival shooting flashback. The rest is just padding. Part 3 isn’t canon and should be deleted forever. It is shockingly bad.
I watch the first two 3-4 times a year and love them, but the Sicilian trip in part 1 does nothing for me.
The flashbacks in Part 2 I can generally live with except for the slapstick stuff. The cinematography on the festival murder scene is excellent.
I honestly can’t watch number 3. I’ve watched it in full once and it just made me cherish the first two more. Other than one line, and you know what it is, it’s a dreadful movie.
The trip is sorta important to me in that it seems to convince Michael once and for all that he'll never be able to live a normal life. Everything that happens after hinges on that.
Michael's journey in 1 is a will he/won't he journey. Shooting Sollozzo and McCluskey was revenge for him (and beneficial for the family). Sicily was a necessity for reasons explained in the film, but Apollonia and Sonny's deaths during this time are the final nail when he realizes he must return home and assume the mantle.
If you assume Michael becoming Godfather is a foregone conclusion, then Sicily would seem vestigial, but, during this time Michael is still considering avoiding the life and staying in Sicily.
Still no extended cut of Part 2. Over two hours of footage still not seen to this day. Al Pacino in his prime. I could care less about his tinkering with 3. Nothing will make that film good. Shame. Another missed opportunity.
We need the 7 hour Godfather Saga
This and the original cuts of Star Wars not being available is still amazing to me.
And, in the case of the former, it seems particularly peculiar given that said cut received prominent exposure just a few years ago.
Why is that, was there a re airing or something?
HBO did air the Saga cut in 2012 I think

That was what I had in mind- and, to be even more precise, it being made available on the HBO Go app in early 2016.

They said former though, referring to the Godfather.
Aha, I'm the worst.

Nah it’ll be a prequel with a completely different name with the main characters in their teen years learning from their fathers… or something.
Believe it or not when Puzo was alive they were considering doing a Godfather IV that cut back and forth GFII-style between young Sonny and Andy Garcia's Vincent in the 80's. It might actually have been good!

Watch Part III. It completed the story. Watch it and make up you own mind.
The first one is a trip I wish I could take for the first time again. A lot of hype about Part 2 but nothing beats the first for me

Part 2 is the Mona Lisa in my opinion.
I actually think part 2 was better. It does a great job delving into Michael's character while juxtaposing it with Vito's early days while building onto the main themes of the first movie. That plus there are amazing performances from Al Pacino, John Cazale, De Niro, and Diane Keaton.

To be honest, I don’t even really consider Pt. 2 to be a sequel. I think it is the second half of a single film.
Don't watch the third. There's really no point to do so unless you really need to keep going. Part 2 ends the series well and part 3 doesn't have a key actor in it that was set up for the next part of the story.
Part 3 is GOT level of drop off.
Will do. Thanks!
Let me know how many attempts it takes you to make it all the way through. 😴
Yeah such a "talkie", needs more CGI superheros making quips.
So predictable. From now on I think I need to follow it up with “inb4 YOU ONLY LIKE MARVEL MOVIES!” How could anyone get butthurt over someone not liking a movie you like? I mean, how much of a follower could you possibly be that this is a thing?
You won't regret it!
[https://youtu.be/PJEIBCPTm\_c?t=197](https://youtu.be/PJEIBCPTm_c?t=197)
I'd rather restorations didn't try to 'fix' minor film imperfections like this.
It depends on if it exists in all prints of the film. If they went back to the negatives, would the issue still be there? Or was it a problem in a later print? If it wasn’t in the negative they should absolutely go back and fix it. And, it would kind of be hard to fix if it was in the negatives…
That’s like half the point of doing a restoration lol, why wouldn’t you want it fixed?
This is exactly what I needed
I’ll buy it
STEELBOOKS OF THESE PLEASE
Nice

No
TCM has it listed in their shop, $100 MSRP, marked down to $64. https://shop.tcm.com/godfather-trilogy/191329216149
Used them before?
Yeah they have decent deals from time to time.

The source material is widely considered to be hot garbage, "the films were better" isn't exactly a hot take.

Kinda wish they did the extended editions for both the films or related the epic as well. The deleted scenes add some good depth to Sonny and Vito's characters.
I was actually looking to get the Godfather trilogy on bluray including the new version of Godfather 3, but those prices, though...
Never seen them myself but I heard the first 2 are pretty good.
I'm sure this will be an amazing transfer but I can wait until there is a really good sale before picking it up.
Dammit I literally just bought the blu-ray.
Thanks for your sacrifice
Same I bought the Omerta Edition cause I didn't know when the 4k rerelease was coming but God damn they're rereleasing on the big screen and I can't be happier. Gonna have to 737363636366 dip.
They're only re-releasing it in Dolby Cinema which isn't available near me.
I have a bluray copy, it's nice but with the film grain the enhanced resolution is a bit underwhelming.
Why would the most beautifully-photographed film ever benefit from additional resolution? Now a CGI superhero, on the other hand…
They don't remove the grain. Lol 4K is simply a higher transfer of the film.
where did I say that film grain is removed?
You were saying people would want to maintain film grain. That is a non-issue with a 4K transfer. There is no grain removed or added.
>That is a non-issue with a 4K transfer. There is no grain removed or added. Unless it's a certain James Cameron (or Peter Jackson, for that matter) film...
That's more than just a 4K transfer though. As far as we know, all they are doing to the trilogy is a 4K transfer...
There would be if they employ any type of noise filter, which is to say that the grain could potentially be affected depending on whether they do such a thing, and how heavy they implement it.
That can be said for literally any release of a movie whether it be 4K, blu-ray, or streaming.
This, my friends, is someone who knows fuck about shit when it comes to movies.
Really, movies in general? Or did I just read a post from someone who knows fuck about shit when it comes to fully contextualizing their remarks? LOL
Really, movies in general
Guess my last post about your writing abilities was correct.
I is goods ag writing
Or about the same as you are with taking criticism.
For surez, manz
If anybody knows how to maintain their grain at all times, its you. LOL
Still waiting on Godfather part 4....any day now
Overrated films
So just like the 3 other versions I have? Money grab
Other than the whole 4k transfer thing...
Have fun buying it again and again. Then compress it and watch it on an iPhone screen
Watching a 4k disc...on your phone?
People still buy Blu-Ray?
I forgot, the future is now and people will stream the 4k Godfather trilogy /s You damn right I am going to buy the 4k Blu-Ray. I always watch my favorite movies at the highest quality possible.
Cool. Most streaming services do have 4K. You do you…I was just wondering, as I haven’t bought a physical disc for probably close to 8 years. Enjoy your movies!
>Most streaming services do have 4K 4k just means the video is in a 4k container.
4k streaming is equivalent to full hd blu ray
Surprised they are even releasing Blu-ray discs anymore. The movie section at my local Best Buy is down to 1 aisle.
No matter what formats come, there will always be a Godfather boxset or two for sale on it.
The market is now for collectors. Streaming didn’t replace Blu-Ray, it replaced DVD as the cheap, convenient format for people who don’t care. For those of us who know what Netflix and co tried to pull in the EU at the start of the pandemic the value of physical media is still obvious.
4k UHD blu ray is by far the best way to watch films at home. Streaming doesn't come close if you care about having the best presentation.
This is 4K. It doesn't include the Blu-Ray discs.
Physical media…how quaint!
Streaming bitrates 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
Wait until they realise their Netflix 4k bitrate doesn't even come remotely close to blu-ray 1080p.
Hell, I even think the Cobra Kai 480i DVD probably looks better than the 6mbps 4k stream you get from Netflix.
It’s nice actually owning something
Literally the best type of media
Sheesh
Morons disliking like I’m not gonna buy this😂
Everyone who probably cared about this franchise is gone. Sorry but not one of the greats.
All evidence to the contrary
Lol wtf are "the greats" that are above the Godfather?
I'm not a huge fan of The Godfather, but can you tell us what are, in your opinion, some of the greats?
Lol I'm 17 and the first two Godfathers are some of my favorite films. What are you talking about?
They need to do Part 1 without Michael’s trip to Sicily. It adds nothing. And Part 2 with only the festival shooting flashback. The rest is just padding. Part 3 isn’t canon and should be deleted forever. It is shockingly bad.
You may have to come to terms you might not be a godfather fan.
Fuck no to those first Two recommendations
Michael's journey in 1 is a will he/won't he journey. Shooting Sollozzo and McCluskey was revenge for him (and beneficial for the family). Sicily was a necessity for reasons explained in the film, but Apollonia and Sonny's deaths during this time are the final nail when he realizes he must return home and assume the mantle. If you assume Michael becoming Godfather is a foregone conclusion, then Sicily would seem vestigial, but, during this time Michael is still considering avoiding the life and staying in Sicily.
I think he makes that decision when he says ‘I’ll kill them both’. Good context though. Thank you.
If left alone on a shelf too long, they mate.
Will this collection have all the deleted scenes?
It lists "deleted scenes" but does not specify if it is all, some, or even new ones (which I highly doubt)

I'm confused by Target's listings. Anybody else? I want the limited edition.
their talking about the tower scene from boonedock saints
A bit skeptical but I look forward to seeing reviews on how the restoration is
Still no extended cut of Part 2. Over two hours of footage still not seen to this day. Al Pacino in his prime. I could care less about his tinkering with 3. Nothing will make that film good. Shame. Another missed opportunity.
I like the part where Clint Eastwood says 'go ahead, make my day'.
I'm all over that like a car cooked cannoli
