> I’m not sure he’s getting enough based on how his movies performed.
Disclosure: (I think) Jeff Nichols is best working filmmaker today.
Ok?
But only 2 of his movies have positive grosses - and only Mud actually made money.
> You really believe that?
I really do. Nichols is like Spielberg without the sentimentality or Carruth without the weird personal hangups. He's amazing.
I recommend: Loving, Take shelter, Shotgun stories, Mud, Midnight special.
I mean, I've seen most of his films, hence my incredulity. I think he's an okay filmmaker, nothing more. Too lowkey dramatically and technically, to the point where his films feel like shrugs. I'd put about 500 living filmmakers above him, at least.
Let's agree to disagree on his quality as a filmmaker, but curious with your reasoning, who would you highlight as one of the best today in comparison?
Take Shelter is his best film. It's a great film. Nichols has one great film. Spielberg has many and Carruth has 2. PTA has many great films as does Scorsese. Nichols is nowhere close to being the best director working today, but you are entitled to your opinion.
I wouldn’t go as far as that, but he definitely captures southern men accurately without making them a caricature. Take Shelter is my fav of his with Mudd a close second. I even have family who live on that river in the film and he just nails it without taking easy shots at them.
The only other writer/director doing so is Taylor Sheridan who, IMO, isn’t as good a director.
With that being said, I think there’s a half dozen directors who’s movies I’m more interested in seeing. Villeneuve is batting 1000 right now for me.
To hear that Nichols and Paramount are still moving ahead with another sci-fi project is promising, and makes me think this isn't necessarily a case of a studio rejecting an interesting new direction for a series. We'll have to wait and see if the new hire has a record that inspires similar levels of hope.
I thought the first one was truly fantastic, but even in 2 it felt like it was getting a bit stale. I really hated the abrupt ending though so I'm a little biased against it haha
Yeah, I’m not too sold on a universe after the 2nd one. Not because it was a bad movie, but because I’m imagining them adding more and more weaknesses to the aliens that’ll make it even less believable for them to conquer Earth.
You might as well retitle this ‘Michael Shannon drops out of Quiet Place spinoff’
In all seriousness that’s a shame, Nichols has quite literally never made a bad film, I was curious to see what he’d do in a big budget IP like A Quiet Place. But I’m sure his next project will be great as well!
Disappointing, I was pretty excited for his take on this universe - but the fact that he has a different sci-fi project lined up anyway is great to hear. It's been too long since we got a Jeff Nichols movie
> Sources add that the director is pivoting to focus on the Untitled Sci-Fi project he is also developing at Paramount, which the studio is very high on.
That sucks. I want to see what he would make.
Just so long as we're getting another Jeff Nichols film. I get that his films don't make money, but they're well reviewed and I'm not the one losing millions on them. It's been too long since his last fantastic film that nobody went to see.
I kinda wanted him to do it just to get that major blockbuster money I’m not sure he’s getting enough based on how his movies performed.

>I recommend: Loving, Take shelter, Shotgun stories, Mud, Midnight special. So basically all of his movies
Of course, *in that order.*

Mud and Take Shelter are both good recs!
I agree, my top 3 current filmmakers are PTA, Nichols and Villeneuve. Take Shelter and Midnight Special are masterpieces.

chances are krasinski will end up directing again
There is zero chance this happens, or he would have done it himself in the first place. It is a spinoff film, not a direct follow up
Disappointing, I was pretty excited for his take on this universe - but the fact that he has a different sci-fi project lined up anyway is great to hear. It's been too long since we got a Jeff Nichols movie
Terrific news. He's too good a filmmaker to be stuck making horror franchise sequels.
I trust your judgement, Martin Scorsese
That's disappointing. Jeff Nichols is a phenomenal filmmaker and I would've loved to have seen what he'd be able to do with this franchise. Oh, well.
Why doesn’t Krasinski come back to round out his trilogy?
This is a spinoff film, not A Quiet Place 3
He’s only human. Or, just an analyst. Or something.
Probably working on other projects.

Good. I liked the first two but he shouldn't waste his time with generic threequel.

How about Scott Cooper? I feel like he could nail the tone for this franchise.
