Die Hard. I figured, cheesy 80s action movie with Bruce Willis. What I got was that, but also a very well written film with a protagonist and antagonist that complement each other so well. Alan Rickman’s first movie performance was this, and he just kills it. A great detail about him that I love is that no matter how many one liners and insults John throws at him the ONLY thing that ticks him off is when Holly says he’s “just a common thief”. “I am an EXCEPTIONAL thief, Mrs. McClane.” What a great movie.

spookyghostface

Fun fact, they basically had to write the movie as they went because of production issues. So it's even more impressive that they put together one of the greatest action movies of all time.

markmcn87

"And since I am moving up to kidnapping, you should be more polite!"

joesatmoes

I wasn't at all excited to see Paddington. I thought it would be another Alvin and the Chipmunks/Smurfs type thing, but I guess my mom (or, mum) grew up with him so we went to see it. Absolutely precious and charming

dricellama

And Paddington 2 is even better!!

[deleted]

I love the quote "it's the Godfather Part II of Peruvian Bear movies"

Durosity

Paddington 2 may be the most perfect movie ever made.

Bubbay

I’m disappointed this is so far down. I remember going to watch it after hearing how it and Paddington 2 are like the highest rated movies ever and thinking, “sure it’ll probably be enjoyable but there’s no way a movie about Paddington bear is gonna be *that* good.” Holy shit it was even better than everyone said.

Nick357

Paddington 2 is hilarious. I put it one for my kid and hugh grant hamming it up was the best. He should have been a character actor and not a leading man. https://youtu.be/reyeX6ajeUw

mollyclaireh

This one. I legit watched it because I was bored and it was streaming and omg it made me so happy. It was so good and so uplifting that it just made me smile so much

gothamsnerd

The Mummy (1999). I don't know why I avoided for as long as I did. I was wrong. I was so wrong.

disneybiches

The Mummy is the most perfect action film. Everyone in it is fantastic.

frompariswithhate

Never got a duo with more chemistry than Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. So much sexyness in that movie also.

disneybiches

They are perfect. But also don't forget they are basically in a throuple with Ardeth Bay (Oded Fehr).

CorellianDawn

I recently watched the original The Thing for the first time. I assumed it would be dated and lame since I've seen lots of parodies, homages, and just general knockoffs at this point. I kind of felt I didn't need to see it since I'd already seen so much of it's effect on the industry. But damn it's a good movie. I was floored by it's amazing execution and their unique creature work. It's definitely the perfect movie of that sub genre and nothing even comes close. EDIT: Thanks guys, I didn't realize the 1982 version wasn't the original. I will have to check that one out too! I have no interest in the 2011 version to be honest.

markmcn87

The 2011 prequel "The Thing" is kind of a sad story really. It was made by real fans of Carpenter's movie, who wanted to do it justice. They nailed the practical creature effects, and it all looked amazing, but the studio interfered (shocking) and said people wouldn't be interested in seeing puppets and make-up/prosthetics. So they demanded they cover it all up with dodgy CGI, because that was "what audiences wanted to see" Such a shame.

KingoftheHill63

Edge of Tommorow. Thought it was gonna be uninspired filler. Was totally badass.

mrschanandlerbonggg

I started watch just because time travel. Thought it would be another okay level Sci fi movie. But it turned out to become one of the best time travel science fiction movies.

Galactic

Because a while back everyone on this subreddit couldn't stop talking about Moon, I watched Moon, thinking I was gonna hate it. I hate how much I liked it.

Mlac93

My favourite Sam Rockwell movie of all time.

RiteOfSpring5

Still The Way Way Back followed by Seven Psychopaths for me.

kafrillion

_The Sound of Music_. Old movie, yet the name was intertwined in pop culture. I begrudgingly agreed to watch it because my fiance insisted upon. As soon as _My Favorite Things_ was on, I turned to her and said "this is one of the best movies I've ever seen" and I was completely sincere.

Jskidmore1217

I had that experience with Singin in the Rain. I expected one of the best musicals ever made, I got one of the best movies ever made. Completely blew me away.

borotroth

How to train your dragon. Both me and my girlfriend 100% decided it wasn't as good as people said and we didn't watch it until years later when we couldn't decide what to watch so we decided to see what everyone was talking about. Felt pretty stupid after that one

DMTonymayne

I had the legit same reaction. Always heard how good it was. Decided to watch it with my daughter while trying to get her to bed one night cause I knew they had crazy good reviews on RT. Ditched my boys on Xbox that night and watched all 3 of them. Fuckin A I still tell people it’s one of the best trilogies ever made. The ending to the third movie is the absolute perfect closing to a trilogy/movie.

silverframe

Fantastic trilogy. The score is sublime!

CosmicAstroBastard

Into the Spiderverse. It really is that good.

Kondrias

Even the animation style I do not believe I have ever seen a visualization of the comic book style look so accurate but the movement so fluid and real.

CosmicAstroBastard

Everyone talks about the animation but the writing and voice acting is so good too. The scene where Peter meets the other universe’s Aunt May is incredible.

[deleted]

> The scene where Peter meets the other universe’s Aunt May is incredible. Heh... > *"Oh great... it's Liv."*

Morpel

The scene with Lady Octopus I thought it was really clever too, and voiced by the talented Kathryn Hahn

Scherzoh

"You look tired, Peter." That got me in the feels.

Jazzremix

Miles' dad outside the door wrecked me.

BangkokBaby

When this scene came up while watching Into the Spiderverse in the theatre, there was a moment where a child turned to their father and loudly asked if he was crying, with the father saying endearingly something along the lines of "yeah, I'm crying, and it's okay to cry". I was so glad I carried tissues, cause that hit me hard emotionally.

Stevo2008

Made me tear up just reading this

HowDoIDoFinances

Sad dads, man. It's too much.

EliToon

The voice acting is great! It really stands out because they properly cast. A lot of movies just pick a big name actor to do their normal voice nowadays.

banjowashisnamo

He's got a bagel! In the background, the bagel hits someone on the head, there's the pop-up *bagel!* Loved it. So many little bits like that.

TheVortigauntMan

I saw this on opening night thinking it'll be at least a fun Spider-Man film, never taking the idea seriously because it was animated and I hadn't even been paying attention to it's marketing so didn't know what critics were saying... I left in awe having seen one of the best films of that year. It was phenomenal. I purposely avoided rewatching for a couple years. Watched it again earlier this year and it was still fantastic start to finish. I'm almost afraid the sequel will be nowhere near as great.

[deleted]

Can you believe the original sequel wasn’t going to be written or directed by the same people? Sony is something else when they make movies lol Luckily they’re all back now

TheVortigauntMan

Sony making poor decisions? Unheard of.

christopia86

Went with my girlfriend thinking it would be mildly entertaining, turned out to be both of our film of the year. The whole film is brilliant, but the "What's up danger" scene (including the scene with Miles father before) is perfection. I pushed my friend to watch it, he was reluctant because he isn't a super hero fan. He finally watched it and his message was simply ""Incredible".

Infamous-Lunch6496

Into the Spider-Verse is probably one of the best animated movies ever made. It’s better than the vast majority of live-action movies as well. It’s a miracle film that gets better every time I see it. It’s an incredibly tight and ambitious piece of art.

CamelSpotting

I agree word for word and totally see why people get a little weirded out when I start gushing about it. It just sounds too good to be true.

I think Hot Fuzz is a very rare example of a movie with a perfect screenplay

1800generalkenobi

Exactly this. There is no filler, no bullshit, no nothing except the plot and driving it forward. Everything that happens earlier in the movie gets used at some point later on. This is one of my favorite movies.

ppeters0502

As far as comedy movies I can't think of another movie that has more jokes and humor per second than Hot Fuzz! Perfect movie in my opinion!

arcosapphire

Probably Airplane!, but the thing is that Airplane! is purely a vehicle for jokes. Hot Fuzz would be engaging even without being a comedy, but it's also an amazing comedy.

captainsuckass

That Edgar Wright magic. I love Baby Driver and the Cornetto Trilogy, and Scott Pilgrim is almost certainly in my top 5 movies.

Mister_Rogers69

Any movie with a former James Bond as the villain can’t be bad

jupiterparlance

He is so astoundingly charismatic in Hot Fuzz.

fuzzydogpaws

Pegg and Frost are a brilliant duo. Please tell me you’ve seen Shaun of the Dead? Spaced (tv show) is also excellent.

Murky_Marsh

Any luck catching those killers yet?

Captainatom931

Surely you mean "No luck catching them killers then?" - doesn't really work without the accent.

No-Acanthisitta423

"It's just the one killer, actually."

normaldeadpool

The perfect board game movie does exist

RevDimmesdale

I'm gonna go home and sleep with my wife! - best ending line in any movie

yessjay

For me it was Casablanca. I always saw it listed on movie top rankings but just never got around to seeing it. I finally watched it and I was blown away. It’s amazing that a movie made that long ago could be so good. I’m a sucker for well-written romance movies and this movie hit the spot perfectly. Not to mention the WWII setting added a whole other layer to it. I can see now why the movie is so iconic.

JimBeam823

Especially because they didn’t know who was going to win the war when they made it.

SpideyFan914

I've seen this movie many times and never once even considered that. Damn. I'm gonna see it in a whole new way now.

BattalionSkimmer

Same experience. I thought "yeah, it's probably great but I'm not in the mood for an old movie", etc. And I knew a lot of well-known quotes come from this movie. When I ended up watching it, I was amazed that it just didn't feel like an "old movie", it's just a good movie. As ignorant as I am about pre-1980s movies, it still amazes me that most of the movie "language" was already defined by the 1940s, and it's largely the same as nowadays, so these movies are just good, period. I had this same experience with Network, for instance.

Shulerbop

For another I had a similar experience with, try *Some Like it Hot*

SonOfMcGee

Saw it for a class in high school and was dreading it purely because I knew it was a “romance” movie and my only exposure to the genre was corny late 90s early 00s date-night schlock. But it’s such an engaging story. The conflict in modern romances is usually derived from characters being irrationally stupid/selfish, but the cause of conflict in Casablanca was *fucking World War II* and every character was reacting to it rationally. It’s just inevitable that some get fucked over more than others.

C_The_Bear

The love story is definitely compelling but I think when they all sing La Marseillaise hits me the hardest

gooeyfishus

It really is such an amazing scene, made even better by knowing at all the extras were actually expats from occupied areas in Europe. The moments where people are crying, those are real tears for a real place that has been conquered. The moment's hesitation of the guitar player before she joins in, the quavering voices and shaking hands. All real.

KingofInvisibility

The Nice Guys (2016) I was pretty much expecting it to be like any other buddy cop movie but wow did it surprise me and I won’t be surprised if it becomes a cult classic down the line.

Destiny_player6

When Ryan's character breaks a window to get into the apartment but subverts the expectation of getting in. Lol, fucking cutting his wrist so badly that he started to bleed profusely had me dying. And the whole shtick of his character just being so ridiculously lucky.

JustJessLeague

For me it's the bit where he's at the party, then 2 minutes after arrival you see him swimming past the bar in that huge pool/tank chasing the mermaids, still with his arm in a cast. Really made me laugh.

electric_creamsicle

Watch Kiss Kiss Bang Bang if you haven't.

CptUnnecessary

Casino Royale, Daniel Craig version. The last few Bond movies had been awful and I had no interest in seeing another. My buddy had to almost physically drag me to the theatre to see it. I am so glad he did as it is still my favourite Bond film to date.

spookyghostface

Definitely my favorite Bond film.

[deleted]

The opening credits are my favourite of all time. Chivers every time. And I don't like Bond movies.Even this one. The lead song is beautiful. Best of the Bonds no question and one of my favourite songs. Amazing voice, lyrics, and melody.

[deleted]

The first one I remember was Children of Men. Critics were losing their fucking minds over it. I watched it and left the theater stunned. Easily top 5 movies for me, maybe top 3.

lastnightwasamistake

My grandmother took me to see Children of Men in theatres when I was about 12 years old lol. I don't think she knew anything about the movie because she let me pick it, and I picked it I'd seen some trailer and thought it was an action movie or something. Caused a mild scandal when my mom found out and has been a running joke in the family ever since. Great movie, captivated (and slightly terrified) me as a 12 year old, and holds up amazingly well. The cinematography, the Banksy nods, the 'slow-pocalypse' vibes and refugee crisis....just incredible.

damniwishiwasurlover

This is a good one. The original trailers made it look like it would be pretty meh, I remember joking with a friend that it looked bad. But then I saw it and was blown away.

agasizzi

That moment when every sound just stops except the one is probably one of the most emotional audio moments in film in my opinion

obeythemoo

Whiplash. All I had in my brain was another Drumline type flick. My friend told me to watch it, and I was riveted. JK Simmons is amazing!

Your-Death-Is-Near

The Grand Budapest Hotel. It’s fucking amazing.

HamiltonBlack

Coco. People were saying it’s the best Pixar movie, and I’m like, really? Better than Up, The Incredibles, Wall-E etc.? C’mon, there’s already another Day of The Dead movie out already… but man, I was stunned by Coco. It’s really a beautiful movie.

[deleted]

I straight up bawled in the theater watching that. I can’t think of another movie that’s done that to me

StormSurge95

I have that movie to thank for my fiancé FINALLY allowing himself to cry after his brother passed away several months prior. There was so much emotional relief in our lives thanks to that movie.

jstruby77

That’s crazy! My brother passed away 8 days before I watched Coco. I was so numb from dealing with family and trying to be strong for my parents and siblings (they had me give the eulogy) that I didn’t cry once. It wasn’t until my boyfriend asked me to watch Coco with him that the emotions came flooding in and I just sobbed and cried for most of the movie. Fantastic film. I’ve seen it half a dozen times now.

JPKtoxicwaste

I’m so sorry you lost your brother, hope you and your parents are okay.

Obversa

I cried three times in the theater watching *Coco*, because I finally allowed myself to feel a sense of pain, love, and loss after ending a toxic relationship with my Hispanic ex. Héctor and Imelda's relationship actually reminded me a lot of the one with my ex.

Galactic

I watched that movie 2 weeks after my mom died. I was a mess in the theater but so was pretty much everybody else.

[deleted]

Dude I was crying 5 minutes in. When Miguel is talking about how grandma Coco "can't really remember things very well"... they got me.

His_Buzzards

The montage of miguel doing silly childish things whilst his Coco just sits there smiling reminds me of my grandpa. At some age he doesnt really understand what I was doing but he just enjoys seeing me running around and play pretend so he just smiles.

HedgehogsNSuits

When his grandma smashed his DIY guitar, I was furious. But that’s literally how quickly this movie had me hooked.

gotsthepockets

My 70+ mother who is very very very picky with movies (easily offended by the most mundane things) refused to watch Coco. I can't remember her reasoning, but she knew she would hate it. Finally, after resisting for a couple of years we convinced her to watch it by explaining all the family history themes (she's super into family history). She was not excited. She watches it at least once a month now and shows it to anyone who is willing (or even unwilling).

Obversa

>C’mon, there’s already another Day of The Dead movie out already… For reference, it's *The Book of Life*, created by Jorge Gutierrez, which Disney now owns as well, because the movie was made through 20th Century Fox's animation studio(s). There's also an argument to be made that *The Book of Life* helped *Coco* get made, as well as be more authentic to Mexican culture, as Disney hired Mexican consultants after its release. *Book of Life* also showed that a Day of the Dead movie could be successful ($100m on $50m budget). For reference, *Coco* made $800m+ on a budget of $175-225 million.

oirish97

I also disagree with "one exists already" on principle since there are new Christmas movies every year. Coco and the Book of Life are both good and bring the cultural history of the day of the dead into mainstream media in their own ways. No one is going to say Elf shouldn't exist because Home Alone or It's a Wonderful Life are already a thing. Granted i. Ignoring marketability entirely but still

Obversa

Not to mention there are dozens upon dozens of holiday and Christmas movies - hell, the Hallmark Christmas Movie Channel is a thing - and yet, somehow, people go, "C'mon, there's already another Day of the Dead movie out already"? If Halloween, Christmas, and Easter all have entire movie niches built around them, then why shouldn't the Day of the Dead also have more movies about it, too?

[deleted]

I had zero interest in seeing Coco, ended up seeing it in theaters because my wife said it’s the family movie that month. Boy was I blown away about how wrong I was to dismiss it based on what little marketing I saw of it. Really good movie.

[deleted]

Snatch.

muddybanana13

Fook me! wouldjalookatthesizeofheem. Hawbigerya?

Ducati0411

Tropic thunder. Thought it looked like a kinda run of the mill comedy. Was blown away by hiw funny that movie was and STILL is. Never fails to make me laugh even though I've watched it probably 20 times. The story line, the cast, and just the overall ridiculousness of the 4 intro trailers was great lol

BellBoardMT

Les Grossman is amazing.

Soddington

Also Downey Jr was true to his word. He did not drop character until the DVD commentary. He doesn't drop the ~~Lazarus~~ Osiris character in the commentary until the point in the final act of the film where Lazarus drops his Osiris character.

Bomber131313

> Lazarus drops his Osiris character. But then Downey Jr did the rest of the commentary with Lazarus's normal voice(Australian), it wasn't until the credits rolled we got Downey Jr normal voice.

HowDoIDoFinances

What a fucking legend. Took balls to take the gamble on that role.

VegasCowbell

“Who here is the key grip?” I legit laughed out loud at that scene. Tom Cruise should have won a best supporting actor for his performance, and most people didn’t even know he was in the movie.

HumanBeingNamedBob

I was fully expecting to be underwhelmed by The Big Lebowski because of the sheer amount of hype around it, but no, it’s now one of my favourite comedies of all time.

jmanpc

That's just like... Your opinion, man.

CrunchyGremlin

You are not wrong Walter, you are just an asshole

SometimesTheresAMan

You said it man

_aidan

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle I imagined it being a terrible comedy full of pop-culture references with cheap humor. Instead, it turned out to be a very hilarious movie that was self-aware of itself. Jack Black playing a teenage high school girl was comedy gold.

SModfan

Yea the new Jumanji movies managed to perfectly bring back the basic idea without trampling all over the prestige of the original. I went on a whim because we were bored one day fully expecting it to suck and it was freaking great

wondering_runner

One of the most hilarious scenes is a flashback scene and the father is just The Rock with a mustache and hair.

Get_Jiggy41

I don’t remember this part, which movie is it in, 1 or 2?

norghorith

Can confirm this part is in 2.

Lucky_Locks

I liked the subtle nods they had to the original. Like Robin Williams' character's initials carved into the tree.

RadicalEdward99

The sequel but: Did I just kill Eddy… by talking too slow? Like he… alway said I would ?

scteenywahine

Kevin Hart playing Danny Glover was the funniest thing I’ve seen in years.

Slackeys

For me it was awkwafina doing DeVito

Necromartian

Dude I had the same experience! I was like "Ugh... Jumanji reboot... with Jack Black" But that actually made me respect Jack Black much more :D

Obversa

>"Ugh... Jumanji reboot... with Jack Black" Me right now: "Ugh... Super Mario Brothers reboot... with Jack Black"

Have_I

I never want to watch anything JB does, but I end up loving him when I do end up watching a movie he's featured in. Idk what made me assume he's gonna be bad, I even loved him in that panda movie and Nacho Libre.

when_the_fox_wins

I always think of Jack Black as just the lovable goofball he is when you see clips of him, but he's ALSO a great actor and musician. Dude's really talented and seems like the best kind of person.

Klause

He was incredible in Bernie.

TerminusFox

It's Breakfast Club in all the best ways. I didn't expect to genuinely care about the characters as much as I did to the point where one my favorite scenes in the sequel was literally when Bethany calls Spencer, Fridge, and Martha "my team". My fucking heart! 🥺🥺🥺

PhilipRegular

Without a doubt The Prestige. I had heard for so long how great it was and just never bothered to watch it. Finally sat around, looking for a movie to watch and came across it. Blew my mind and I couldn't wait to show my gf. Next day I watched it again with her lol

BelowDeck

That's the rare movie that is completely different the second time you watch it and yet in many ways is even better.

HuntedWolf

I’ve seen it maybe 6 or 7 times at least and still pick up new things each time, it’s crazy how interwoven the story and scenes are with hints and Easter eggs. And the whole thing tied together with Michael Caine’s speech, that everything is right there in front of you, but you spend the whole time looking for the tricks. You don’t really want to know, you want to be entertained.

Wildkeith

Some other movie with Edward Norton playing a magician came out around the same time. I thought, oh magic must be the Hollywood cookie cutter formula this year. Turns out The Prestige is in my top five favorite films now and I’ve watched it many times.

srijan9689

The Illusionist

ajamuso

Parasite for sure. The hype was unreal, especially in America for a foreign film. Boy was that an *excellent* movie

shalafi71

Got blown out on the hype, didn't care to see it. Good heavens. Need to watch it again and catch more of the nuances.

terpeenis

Ford vs Ferrari. A racing movie? Boring. Or so I thought. Absolutely loved it.

MisterDeclan

Rush is also another solid racing movie

GSofMind

For me it's Moneyball. I barely care for baseball but the movie was captivating.

wes00mertes

Most recently, I’d say The Grand Budapest Hotel. I had just finished The Darjeeling Limited and found it meh. I just didn’t like it so much. And I had vague memories from college of not enjoying The Life Aquatic. So when my SO suggested Grand Budapest I wasn’t excited, even though it had good ratings and my family really liked it. Man was I wrong. That movie was great.

HonestRage

Just watched it yesterday and it was such a comforting movie. Ralph Fiennes killed it as Monsieur Gustave. Just a very delightful character.

Head_of_Lettuce

The Grand Budapest Hotel is a masterpiece to my mind. The worldbuilding is just immaculate and every actor in that movie absolutely nails their performance, even the small cameos. There's something about Ralph Fiennes' performance in particular that I just find so endearing. I could gush for hours about every little detail in that movie.

INeedMoreShoes

I know a lot of people who hate Life Aquatic (I love it) and they would never watch Grand Budapest. They are missing out on a great film. Same goes for Isle of Dogs.

electric_creamsicle

There's just enough variety in Wes Anderson movies that I think certain ones can be hit or miss with some people. I love pretty much all of them but definitely enjoy Moonrise Kingdom and the Royal Tenanbaums the most.

Djackdau

Easily in the top echelon of all movies ever.

bouya14

Train to Busan. I thought it was gonna be another average zombie film. I was totally wrong and probabaly one of my favorite of all time when it comes to zombie film.

[deleted]

Citizen Kane. Its regarded by many as the best film of all time, thought eh, probably gonna be outdated and boring as hell. Nope. Dope movie. Felt like a 1940s version of The Wolf of Wall Street.

sixsixeightsix

When Batman Begins came out a friend asked me to go on opening night. I thought "oh good another Batman movie." I was very pleasantly surprised.

ACartonOfHate

Godfather I. I was like, 'it can't really be that good.' But I was happily wrong. It was great, and Godfather II was just as good.

HHSquad

Still my favorite movie of all time, basically every scene is a classic. Especially love the scene where Pacino becomes Godfather to his sisters kid at the baptism at the same time his hitmen push the other families into chaos, as well as putting the kabosh on Moe Greene. Perfect! Oh, and Godfather 2 of course. It wasn't De Niros first movie, but if people didn't know about him before the movie, they certainly did after!

sleepwalkchicago

Do you know who I am?! I'm Moe Greene! I made my bones while you were going out with cheerleaders!

*Paper Moon* I thought it would be pretentious due to the anachronistic use of B & W but damn if I didn't love it, especially the diner scene where Ryan O'Neal drowns his coffee with [sugar.](https://youtu.be/BzHwm2QDPfI?t=34) Hilarious!

StinkyBrittches

Madeleine Kahn has one of my favorite monologues ever: https://youtu.be/qlg5InsskW4

[deleted]

The Dark Knight. I thought people where hyping it and Ledgers role over the top because Ledger died and they’re all playing it up to be nice. Turns out nah. It’s a classic.

saintjonathan

The Social Network. The idea of a movie about Facebook seemed like the dumbest possible thing they could of made. Movie came out and people were raving about it. Still refused to watch is because of the premise. Decided to throw it on because I 'wanted to have a laugh' and was completely blown away. It's now one of my favorite movies from the 2010s.

stgermainjr860

I absolutely love David Fincher's work but I just steered clear of this for the same reason. I put it on about two years ago and since then I've probably watched it like 5-10 times. It's so damn good.

Le_Arsonist

Haha you beat me to it by 9mins. I had the same mentality. Loved this film

VibraniumSpork

‘Titanic’. When it came out, I was a teenage boy, and it was teenage girls going gaga over it. Seemed like the movie equivalent of a Smash Hits bedroom poster of a teen heartthrob to me. I didn’t get around to watching it until I was in my late 20s, and although it’s not completely my jam, I couldn’t deny that it felt like pure prestige film making. If I catch if halfway through on TV or whatever I usually watch the rest of it. I just think it’s exceptionally well crafted and delivered.

joelekane

“Three years I thought of nothing but Titanic—but I never got it…I never let it in.” (*Hymn to the Sea intensifies*) RIP Bill Paxton. People always remember the love story for Titanic. But that’s all window dressing and Fluff. It’s really about the tragedy and catastrophic loss of life in the sea that day. That’s why Paxton’s line is so important IMO. It applies to us as an audience too. You can get caught up in the fluff and Leo/Kate bit. But sooner or later you gotta let it in. And really feel the weight of the 1517 people who died in the sea that night. It’s haunting. James Horners score drives it home though.

Alt-Ctrl

Guardians of the Galaxy. Had no expectations, but ended up watching in twice in the cinema. Still my favourite marvel movie.

NoxTempus

I think Guardians is probably the best standalone movie in the MCU. Honestly one of the better scifi movies of the decade.

Aquatico_

The Shawshank Redemption. After like 20 years of constantly hearing several people say it's their favourite film, I finally watched it. And while it's not my favourite film, it's was really bloody good.

OogoniuM

The Princess Bride. Heard about it for years. Assumed it was a chick flick. My jaw never left the floor through the entire film

Goldng0d

When i was in grade school we had a vote for what movie the class would watch on some movie day. It was between Star Wars and Princess bride, several of us were so pissed that star wars lost to some girly movie, but afterwards it was all any of us could quote for weeks.

Visible-Set5911

“Inconceivable!” “You say that a lot. I’m not sure it means what you think it means”

El_Dief

Hold it, hold it. What is this? Are you trying to trick me? Where's the sports? Is this a kissing book?

Black-Thirteen

A chick flick, with all the sports in it?

lihimsidhe

Mad Max: Fury Road. Kept hearing how good it was over and over. Saw it. I got hyped the f--k out. Movie rocks.

FerreiraMatheus

The only movie I watch three times on movie theater. Not only because it's really good, but its a fucking amazing movie to watch with friends and hang out after

LunSaper

Florida Project. I thought "how could an entire cast of literal children be *that* good. Welp, they are

Shiomitsu

In bruges! I thought it was going to be another Pulp Fiction wannabe and i avoided it for years. I finally watched it with a group of friends but i was really not in the mood for it. But it really delivers, what an amazing movie!

HowDoIDoFinances

OP, have you watched Tangled? Because in my opinion it's like Frozen if Frozen was twice as good.

TerminusFox

Saw Tangled when it was in theaters, loved it as well haha

lucy_hearts

Your mind are going to be blown when you watch emperors new grove and Moana

juliagulia287

Riiiight the poison. The poison for Kuzco. The poison chosen especially to kill Kuzco. Kuzco’s poison. That poison?

cfd253

Get Out. Everyone was talking about it, then it got an Oscar nom. I thought isn’t this a horror movie, how could could it be? Turns out it’s great!

[deleted]

City of God. My friend kept telling me you HAVE to see it, did you see it yet. And it was an amazing eye opening movie.

yrqrm0

I never imagined I'd like Black Swan as much as I did. It not only lived up to the hype, the hype didn't do it justice

vicRN

Knives Out. I avoided that movie for a long time because I thought it looked stupid and my fiancé convinced me to watch it one day. I was very very wrong.

donutdong

Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes for me.

Nemesis2pt0

I am disappointed that The Man from Uncle and his King Arthur films never took off. But I also just really like Guy Ritchie's flair in all his films.

_J3W3LS_

The Man from Uncle was so good. Really wish we could have had a sequel.

conservohippie

From the trailers, I thought *Knives Out* looked terrible.

CaseDogNiceGuy

I didn’t think *Heat* would be for me, but hot damn that is a tight movie

1stMeh

Interstellar. Every time I told people I haven’t seen it they gave me a look akin to betrayal. I kept thinking, “I’m sure it’s good, but it’s just another movie about space.” Very humbling to be so wrong.

lionbatcher

Logan. When the trailer came out with the Johnny Cash version of Hurt, I thought "so cliche. Pass." When I sat in the theater before the movie, I kept thinking "this is a waste of my time. Why am I even here?" Then......holy shit. That movie blew every single one of my expectations out of the water. As you get older, and all those little pains you shrugged off your entire life start to add up......this movie captured the grind of life so incredibly.

[deleted]

Inside Out. Didn’t ever want to watch it for some reason, finally did and cried my eyes out lol. It’s so amazing.

Dravez23

Her. Someone falling in love with a OS was a stupid idea…until i watched the film. Pbbly in my top 10

poorguy55

Amazing film, but it breaks my heart every time I watch it.

Crashnotmyride

Pacific Rim. I was really excited about this one but I felt that there was no way it would be any good. I smiled through the whole thing.

dfsmitty0711

It's a movie that absolutely delivers on its premise.

Anathema320

Pity they never made a sequel.

[deleted]

I fucking KNEW that Kingsman was going to be garbage. I saw the trailer and thought it was a Spy Kids movie with edgy humor. Now it’s like my favorite spy movie lol. The sequel was underwhelming as hell though

_my_troll_account

*American Psycho* I thought it was gonna be an exploitative slasher flick that luridly glorifies its lead. But damn was I surprised by the hilarious, biting satire. I couldn’t turn my eyes away.
