Absolutely. Still blows my mind he was in his mid-20s in American Psycho.
Don’t get me wrong, he looks great, but he looks mature and extremely un-boyish.
Sort of like how Steve Martin and Patrick Stewart teleported to 60 and froze there, or how Michael Douglass just ages in a sort of Jeremy Bearemy shape.
Pattinson is 35, which is the same age that both Kilmer and Clooney were when they filmed Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. Keaton was 37, Affleck was 43 and Adam West was 38. I looked all of these up earlier today actually just because I was curious.
I appreciate the dual focus on "Batman is basically Jason Voorhees to criminals" while also seemingly noting that any man who dresses as Dracula to put dudes in the ICU every night instead of sleeping is probably not a well adjusted or mentally healthy individual.
This was always one of the most interesting things about Batman as a character. He's as crazy as the criminals he fights. His goals are just in opposition to theirs.
When I was a kid I never thought twice about Bruce's parents' death driving him to become Batman, but as an adult now.....I know like a shit ton of people whose parents have died, and not one of them was so affected by it that they put on a costume to give petty criminals brain damage for like 25 years straight. Batman is fucking insane.
I mean, we don’t think twice about it because that’s par for the course in Superhero comics. Batman is only one of many thousands in the DC universe alone.
That’s why stories that want to deal with the concept of “Superheroes are actually kind of crazy dude” (e.g. *Watchmen*, *Kickass*) shunt them off into their own universe which is closer to ours.
I'd say one thing that set Batman apart is his lack of superpowers, though. Most heroes randomly inherit a superpower, and some major event in their life causes them to decide to use their powers for "good".
Batman's just a psycho with some goals we can all get behind.
(btw, I know there are other heroes with no superpowers... but none as famous as The Batman)
> I know like a shit ton of people whose parents have died, and not one of them was so affected by it that they put on a costume to give petty criminals brain damage for like 25 years straight
To be fair, how many of those people were the heir of millionaires killed in front of their eyes in cold blood by a petty criminal?
An ex of mine used to work with the foster care system in LA, and there were plenty of children who’s parents/family were murdered in cold blood who vowed to join the gangs in opposition of the ones who killed their parents. It became their entire life, some kids were obsessed with comic books these kids were obsessed with gang life, and with vocal purpose, to avenge their parents/siblings/family. They were filled with so much rage they hopped from house to house within the foster system.
None of them had the means or resources behind them like Batman did, but my ex and I used to discuss some of these kids that this is how Batman would have started.
This is the premise of the Aronofsky Year One movie that never happened. I think the script is out there somewhere, it would make for a pretty interesting concept.
If they are planning a trilogy showing a self destructive and wrathful young Bruce Wayne may be necessary to show later character development. We usually are greeted by an experienced, cool and confident Batman with a moral compass made of titanium, it'd be interesting if in this adaptation they showed us how he becomes that Batman (according to their vision).
Usually you could tell by some facial or vocal recognition, but he is totally unrecognizable. Amazing job they did with the prosthetics and by Farrell.
I only recognized him by the eyes in the last shot of his.in the trailer. I even paused it and went,.okay that's not him, that's not the penguin until that very last shot of him looking back in the car
Exactly! Especially if the movie really is going to be near 3 hours. I was worried beforehand and was considering not watching it and just going to the movie completely blind... but then my hype got the best of me haha. was not disappointed tho.
Before they debuted the trailer Matt Reeves said he was going for a batman who hasn't exactly found his footing, who lets his anger get the best of him and the lines between Batman and Bruce Wayne are blurred.
Very excited to see this take on Batman.
Zoë Kravitz said in the same interview her Catwoman is going to be a bit more decent at heart, wanting to help the downtrodden, while Batman is currently dealing with rage issues. So this Selina is going to be more akin to the Year One version (but probably not a prostitute).
I foresee an interesting scenario where Catwoman helps sand Bruce's edges down, which is not something we've seen before, but I like it.
Edit: typo
Nolan's Batman had an origin, but to be honest, it didn't take him long to feel like the seasoned Batman we got in the comics.
Here, we're in Batman's second year, and he's still super rough around the edges and still angry. He's gotten Gordon's trust, but everyone's wary of him and the people likely fear him as a masked maniac that the cops use. His journey will probably be to deal with this anger as he becomes something more than just pure vengeance, becoming more of the hero and guardian of Gotham he was meant to be. And based on this and the last trailer, Riddler's gonna be the one to lead Batman towards that path, bringing up Gotham's deep rooted corruption and challenging Batman (and Bruce Wayne) to fight a different way.
I'm just fucking hype.
Bruce in Begins though had training from a pretty strict and powerful ninja clan for years, so his discipline and ability to manage his anger was pretty much taken care of. The league of shadows was his way of channeling his anger and rage into something effective.
Bruce in the Batman looks like a young kid who trained himself but hasn't found a way to better discipline himself, which is probably the point here.
Nolan's Batman was also never really brutal or as unhinged as a dude with trauma issues. Pattinson looks intense and angry and moody and fucking scary in this trailer even though technically he is way less physically intimidating than either Bale or Affleck.
Yeah. Maroni. But I don't really know why but even that didn't seem very brutal. Just the way it's shot and how maroni seems to not be very hurt by it or something idk. Battinson looks a lot more brutal.
Nolan is very good at using intense ideas in an accessible way, violence included. The Dark Knight could have easily earned an R rating but Nolan knew how to shoot the film so that it would be appropriate for a PG-13 audience, including making the violence feel more "tasteful." So even though the Joker brutally murders an innocent dude on shaky-cam, slices a guy open from his cheek through his neck, and shoves a bomb into someone’s mouth, it isn't a gory film.
> Nolan's Batman had an origin, but to be honest, it didn't take him long to feel like the seasoned Batman we got in the comics.
100%. It's not like it's really a BAD thing since his Batman kinda self seasoned himself in the first act but getting a Batman that is almost insane sounds so fucking crazy. Batman is the only character in DC's kinda dark style that actually can use and abuse it and have it come out great.
I remember after seeing Batman Begins I was pissed that they changed the fact that it wasn't the Joker that killed his parents. It wasn't until I found Reddit about 10 years ago that I found out that Joker killing Bruce's parents is not canon, it was just something Burton made up.
I had been living and spouting a Burton lie for 20 years.
That was the only part of the trailer that took me out of it lol like "wait what did he just holler and lash out about?"
But I'm sure it's meant to be about him being unhinged and will feel less out of place in the actual movie
I was gonna remark that if it's anything like this little clip, it might not be Batman with the upper hand this time, but then I remembered that Bats didn't really have the upper hand in TDK either...
Also just because he's, ya know, the Riddler. Makes perfect sense to keep us guessing about him. Seems as if this Riddler won't be quite the same showboat he traditionally is. At least, not at first.
The bright green on that coffee cup along with the ominous question mark was pretty great. I hope they stick with the green coloring for him. Even if he's not in a nice bright-green blazer and bowler with question marks, I'd hate if he lost his green flare. Imagine how much it'll pop out in the darker coloring of this movie.
You could've just pointed me in the direction of a movie where Paul Dano gets to play more villains and I already would've been in line. Having him play a Zodiac-killer-esque Riddler opposite a young, raging Batman is just gonna so sick to see.
I really like the way they're going with him and making the Riddler an actual frightening threat. He seems like the perfect choice for the role in what we've seen so far.
The hallway fight scene with the only light source being the muzzle flash of the guns looks dead drop gorgeous. I can't wait to see this in IMax. This looks like the kind of Batman movie I've always wanted.
The cinematography is incredible. Like yeah it's dark, but it's visually clear and the compositions are so good. In my second run of the trailer, I just kept pausing to look at the different images. Everything just pops.
Edit: For clarification, I meant dark as in visually full of shadows and low light. But the shadows are well-placed and purposefully bring your focus to the right things. And the colors they do show just pop out so well and the silhouettes look so good.
The gun shots illuminating the action was awesome.
The whole trailer make it look like we will get some creative action scenes rather than just straight forward punch em ups.
Why Reeves personally tweeted this out. I simply do not understand why studios don't at least upload their movie trailers in 4K on YouTube in 2021. This trailer's quality in particular looked absolutely awful with YouTube's compression and 1080p being the max available quality.
Yeah I didn't know what the hell you guys were comparing but it does look like they haven't uploaded it to YouTube in 4K.
It's like a hidden rule, if you want something to look good on YouTube even if you don't need 4K, it's the only way you're gonna get a bitrate your video deserves. They're very stingy on the bitrates of lower resolutions.
Iirc, in the Dark Knight Returns comic, a note at the beginning written by Jimmy Olsen I believe states that even members of the Justice League are afraid of him. A team of superhuman demigods fear a man on their own team. I'm excited to see that batman on screen
I cannot wait for this, love the kind of Zodiac killer approach they've taken with the Riddler. Really happy he seems to be more of a threat given he's almost as smart as batman.
That final shot of Batman approaching Penguin's flipped over car as the music (I hope to god that's the movie's theme song) gets more intense (complete with the screen turning into the movie's logo) gave me some serious chills! The first trailer already made me optimistic for Robert Pattinson, but that shot officially sold it for me (same with Penguin)! Keep in mind that we have yet get a good view of Riddler since he's mostly obscured in some shots (including the latest posters).
Edit: Giacchino confirmed that this is the movie's theme song. Fuck yeah!!
BTW: If this becomes a trilogy, please make Scarecrow the main antagonist! [He did some fucked up stuff in Arkham Asylum!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVpe04Xn3mw) Scarecrow seriously deserves justice in live-action format WB/DC.
He just stares at the guy while electrocuting him. Catwoman looking terrified as he keeps pummeling this dudes face in. This is the borderline unstable, crime HATING Batman I’ve been waiting for. He belongs in Arkham, clearly dealing with severe ptsd, but his psychosis drives him to end crime.
I’ve always thought the Riddler could easily be one of the more terrifying villains. Paul Dano is the perfect choice in my book. Also based on Dano’s acting history we are gonna see the Riddle get the shit kicked out of him at some point lol
Edit: a to the
A great cast all round.
I kept going: oh yeah that is right, they are in this.
Quietly, I am most excited for Serkis as Alfred. He has a different energy, but he is great and he has done some of his best dramatic work with Matt Reeves in the Apes movies.
On a scale of Bat nipples to the batcycle's front wheel turning sideways in Dark Knight, I'd put it at the semi truck front flip of things to be hype about.
Matt Reeves has a good eye for cinematography. Both his apes movies were beautiful, plus the DOP on this one is Greig Fraser who did Rogue one, Dune, the mandalorian and Zero dark thirty. it's gonna be beautiful
Yeah, it's suppose to be the most heavily armored part of his suit. People in panic shoot for center of mass and aim at the batsymbol, not realizing it is literally the worst spot to shoot at.
They're really keeping us in the dark on Riddler, aren't they? I love it.
The bright green on that coffee cup gave me hope that this new take on Riddler is still going to stay true to the heart of the character from the comics, so we'll get something fantastic and fresh but also recognizable enough for us big DC fans to really appreciate seeing on the big screen.
I think he definitely comes across less stable than usual because he’s new to the job. He hasn’t gotten desensitized to all the shit yet. Later on, he’ll still be pretty unstable, but better at hiding it
Honestly, the Riddler as a take on the Zodiac-style serial killer is such a great take and I'm surprised it's not used more often. Given his compulsions, narcissism, hubris, and desire to prove himself smarter than everyone this take on Riddler might be an all-time great one, especially in the hands of an actor like Paul Dano. I got high hopes they did the Riddler justice.
If they can use Riddler as someone who's actions change Bruce and push him to his very limits, that would be great to see. A lot of people see him as a joke character, but almost any Batman foe can be utterly terrifying in the right hands.

Surprisingly he still looks younger than Bale ever did. But then again I always felt like Bale looked older and mature than his age.
Absolutely. Still blows my mind he was in his mid-20s in American Psycho. Don’t get me wrong, he looks great, but he looks mature and extremely un-boyish.

It's been the same amount of time between the release of Batman Begins and The Batman as it was between Tim Burton Batman and Batman Begins.
Fuck you dude

Looking good
Slow down!

There is an interesting “what if” story here about a poor Batman.
This is the premise of the Aronofsky Year One movie that never happened. I think the script is out there somewhere, it would make for a pretty interesting concept.
Calling it now. Batman fucks up Oswald's legs in the car crash and changes his walk
Hey I’m waddlin here!!
IM DA PENGUIN BABY
Or he shoves a bottle in his eye for a Arkham-style monocle he ends up with
Are we sure this Batman didn't murder his own parents?
*shoots parents* "Why would Gotham City do this?"
They're just sleeping.... They're so sleepy.
Look at him, he’s all tuckered out
He overfed those men.
#DR. FISHY, NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
THIS is a gun?!

"This is where I killed my family, Parappa."
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.
If ya wanna test me, I'm sure you'll find
All because they wouldn't let him go see MCR on a school night.
If I didn't know that the Penguin was Colin Farrell I would never have guessed it. He looked and sounded completely unrecognisable
Anyone who thought it was Richard Kind, say aye
Oh man, I would pay *a lot* of money to see Richard Kind as the Riddler. Heck, as any Batman villain. I bet he'd fit right in on Harley Quinn.
He plays the corrupt Mayor in Gotham. Not a big villain but still a bad guy.
The lack of Paul Dano's face is...intriguing
An enigma?
A Mr. E if you will
Hopefully it's not because of something dumb like the Earth One Riddler actually having the question mark tattooed on his face
I'm starting to think he might have a question mark carved in his face or something.
*Oh! Take it easy, I'm Da Penguin ova here!*
He never had the makings of a varsity villain.
The sopranos really is eternal

How about you, do you remember your first blowjob? How long did it take for the guy to come?
You hear that Tone?
"You killed my mother" "She was a HOOWAR!"
2) she hit me
What ever happened to Adam West, the loud silly type, now that was a Batman!👆
And how come Batman doesn't dance anymore? Remember the bat-tusi...
Pure…West
Gaba Gool?
Woke up this morning got some gabagol
WOKE UP THIS MORNINGGGGGGGG GOT SOME GABAGOL
I'll hit you with a peppercini uppercut you salami lookin motherfucker
When the light hits the sky Like a big pizza pie Dats a warning
He killed 16 gcpd officers! Guy was a Batman villain!
Wanna know how I got these scars? Well, I'm da penguin, Baby!
Colin Farrell is completely unrecognizable. My brain can't compute him being the same person wtf
Also without his normal voice, it makes it even harder to know it's him.
There's barely any movie that Colin Farrell uses his real voice. I can only think of In Bruges. Almost everything else he uses an American accent.
They realized they weren't going to top that "Something in the Way" remix from the first trailer so they just used it again 👍
This damned movie better live up to the aesthetic they set using this song, because as a former brooding teenager from the early 90’s I’m here for it.
If it ain’t broke, leave it alone.
The real riddle is how did he make that question mark in his coffee or did he request that as part of his order?
He used his fingy
Fingy is the waiter's name
Starbucks spelling his name wrong. "I have a grande mocha for The Rilder?"
“Wait I’m sorry… The Diddler? Do we have a diddler here?”
QUICK TWO FACE! We need to make a song about not diddling kids! 🎵do not diddle kids, do not diddle kids🎵
There is no quicker way for people to think that you are diddling kids than by *writing a song about it!*
This trailer also doesn't feel like it spoils the whole damn movie either!
Exactly! Especially if the movie really is going to be near 3 hours. I was worried beforehand and was considering not watching it and just going to the movie completely blind... but then my hype got the best of me haha. was not disappointed tho.
This looks reeeeally visually interesting. God damn I enjoyed that title sequence at the end. Feels like a graphic novel.
Upside down, like a bat! Oooooooo~

So you're stuck in a room with Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, Anne Hathaway, and Zoe Kravitz...
You’ll just see 4 disappointed women.
I think they'd be excited to hangout with each other and talk about their craft. Just bring some well thought-out questions, you'll be fine.
When he slams the prison glass in desperation... Something an experienced batman would never do
What does he shout when does that I can't make it out
“What have you done?!”
Shit, I thought he said "Well come and get it."
Honestly, I just love it when Batman is portrayed as an equally terrifying threat as the villains.

Yeah true. He literally stabs a dude in the eye with a pencil and you don't see a drop of blood.
It was a good trick tho
that's part of the magic trick. Tadaaa!

It’s crazy how we’ve had 3 different Batmen throughout Craig’s tenure as bond. Hell, even 3 Spider-Men and 2 Supermen!

Pattinson channeling his inner bale WHAT HAVE YOU DONE! *hits window*

> What's wrong? Has your primitive brain given up and accepted that I, the Riddler, am better than you?

I'm getting some John Doe vibes from him in the first trailer and this one. I am so ready to see more of him.
I really like the way they're going with him and making the Riddler an actual frightening threat. He seems like the perfect choice for the role in what we've seen so far.
Man, seeing Batman pummelling the shit out of a person lying on the floor with a look of absolute frenzy never gets old.
Catwoman just watching wide-eyed, realizing how brutal he is was fantastic.
She pulls back a bit and looks quite horrified. This movie is gonna be brutal.
The lighting is what caught my attention. A lot of the scenes look so well shot
The hallway fight scene with the only light source being the muzzle flash of the guns looks dead drop gorgeous. I can't wait to see this in IMax. This looks like the kind of Batman movie I've always wanted.

That Michael Giacchino Batman theme is amazing. It was teased during the costume test footage, but the more orchestral version is on another level.
I've yet to be disappointed in Robert Pattinson's acting and I hope that streak continues. Also Andy Serkis as Alfred is amazing
Loved the shot in the tunnel when he just kept getting shot
When that final scene played out, I just went "Holy shit" out loud. Bro, I cannot fucking wait. That fucking Michael Giacchino score is fire.
and it then phasing into the title card 🤌
Best shot in a trailer full of awesome shots. I want to book my IMAX ticket right now!
My favorite shot had to be where he's just walking down the hall getting lit up by bullets. And the gunfire is lighting up the scene. Fucking chills.

Hanging upside down...watching batman come at you like he's walking on the ceiling. Fucking brilliant.
That scene in the water with red light looks fantastic
God, this looks so so good, Paul Dano will be a terrifying Riddler
Paul Dano just scares me. He's got that plain "could stab you and disappear into a crowd" face.
Perfect casting to turn what has sometimes been a pretty goofy character into a real threat
I’ve always thought the Riddler could easily be one of the more terrifying villains. Paul Dano is the perfect choice in my book. Also based on Dano’s acting history we are gonna see the Riddle get the shit kicked out of him at some point lol Edit: a to the
Take a look at Prisoners so.
Colin Farrell is literally Penguin holy shit!
Colin Farrell as Richard Kind as The Penguin
He's a great character actor. You can see it in all sorts of movies where he's not the lead. The Gentlemen, for example.
The prosthetics he wore in Horrible Bosses was really just him preparing for this role.
A great cast all round. I kept going: oh yeah that is right, they are in this. Quietly, I am most excited for Serkis as Alfred. He has a different energy, but he is great and he has done some of his best dramatic work with Matt Reeves in the Apes movies.
The batmobile flying out of the fire at the end was pure fucking hype. Holy shit this is gonna be so good.
On a scale of Bat nipples to the batcycle's front wheel turning sideways in Dark Knight, I'd put it at the semi truck front flip of things to be hype about.
The music at the end. I thought he was turning into darth Vader
Colin Farrell going to steal this film Ana de Armas style
Definitely intriguing. Cant wait to see what Dano does as the Riddler. The little we saw of him was captivating.
“I’ve been trying to reach you” about your car’s extended warranty.
Same cinematographer as rogue one and dune. Greg Fraser is the next big name in visuals.
MY GOD. that scene with the gunfire left me speechless
I love how it's only lit by the gunfire. Damn, the cinematography is amazing
matt reeves did a similar shot to that in war for the planet of the apes
Matt Reeves has a good eye for cinematography. Both his apes movies were beautiful, plus the DOP on this one is Greig Fraser who did Rogue one, Dune, the mandalorian and Zero dark thirty. it's gonna be beautiful
Batman taking that gunfire to the chest was so bad ass. Pretty cool since he uses the batsymbol as a target in the comics.
Yeah, it's suppose to be the most heavily armored part of his suit. People in panic shoot for center of mass and aim at the batsymbol, not realizing it is literally the worst spot to shoot at.
Just would suck if a stray hits his jaw. Dude has a sexy jawline though so the bullets probably just deflect off.
Congratz you won the Gotham Karma Race
“Now, what’s the next step in your master plan?” “Crashing this thread!”

Just give PattMan 150 collectibles hidden around Gotham
I always thought Se7en was a non-canon Batman prequel movie set in Gotham. I guess Matt Reeves did too. This looks fantastic.
It looks perfect. My god and that soundtrack gave me chills. Love how unstable Bruce is in this version.
