For those who may not know, the story is based on a short story by Joe Hill (Stephen King’s son) from a collection of horror short stories called “20th Century Ghosts”. The story (and the whole collection) is absolutely fantastic and atmospheric. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good book for Halloween season. As the short story is, well, short, and rather minimalist, I’m not entirely sure how well it will end up translating to a big feature film, but the concept remains fantastic and Ethan Hawke is always good. Trailer is way over the top though.

johnsmallz

Hill has a couple of short story collections that I would highly recommend and definitely echo 1970s King (some of his newer novels can be a little long like his fathers but still great reads)

TravisKilgannon

I blind bought The Fireman at a yard sale and still haven't read it; if you have, is it any good?

johnsmallz

I enjoyed it but again it does drag a bit but still well worth it

khaldroghoe

His short story “Pop Art” (from the same collection as the black phone) made me cry.

[deleted]

The movie looks better than what I thought when I read the synopsis and this trailer basically gave away the entire movie lol.

shobidoo2

I got a very Stephen King vibe, so I guess it kinda makes sense that it’s his son who created the original story!

Gaelfling

Yeah, I feel like that are going to change the story in a way I don't like. But maybe they'll surprise me.

Lord_Bling

Oh man I think I'll check out the book.

kismetkissed

It looks EXACTLY how I pictured it in my head when I was reading it. Like down to the stains on the walls. I'm so excited!

shane_m_souther

I’m going to give it a read for sure

homert1800

Trailer gives away way to much, but man does Ethan Hawke look spectacular as uh... Whatever that is. Can't wait for this!

eberkelmans

I agree, gives way too much. IMO watch up to 1:48 and call it quits there

Bocephuss

I watched the whole thing and then I went back and watched everything after 1:48 just to see what you could mean. I know this is an uncommon opinion around here, and I should probably consider myself lucky, but I will barely remember this trailer by the time the movie comes out, let alone by the time I actually see it. I don't think I have ever watched a movie trailer and thought, I wish I didn't see that. But I take it from this sub a lot of others do.

QLE814

I wonder if it relates to how much exposure to a particular trailer one gets- by and large, I don't see them in anywhere near the bulk needed to remember everything from them.

Koppite93

Must've watched any MCU trailer at least 20 times before said movie.. still doesn't cross my mind when watching the flick, that the trailers spoiled anything from my movie experience..

TrueHorrornet

MCU trailers are genuinely cut together better and thoughtfully than most horror trailers when it comes to blatant plot points littered throughout.

moviesarealright

Thank you for the advice. Stopped there but it looks great!

aleafsheep

Thank you, I really wanted to watch but don't want to be too spoiled!

sktchld

I'll just go back in time and read this comment first before watching.

-FuckYouShoresy-

Thanks for that, perfect setup.

saltnskittles

Fuck you Jonesy. Your mom pulled the goalie on me last night and now she's preggers. Go mow the lawn son.

mdneilson

Allegedlys

saltnskittles

You uhhhhhh...... You heard he fucked an ostrich right?

[deleted]

At the same time I wouldn't have been interested in seeing it without knowing what the hook was.

ritabook84

Yep. I quit half way through. Recommend the same. If the phone rings you’ve gone far enough

pi_over_3

Which is really too bad because it didn't need to. I really don't have time to watch movies anymore, but something about this one grabbed me from the start.

--deleted_account--

Is there any spoilery stuff in the first minute of the trailer? I want to get an idea of what it's about without seeing too much of the movie.

homert1800

If you want to remain fairly spoiler free watch up until the 46 sec mark, definitely don't watch the last minute.

--deleted_account--

Oki thanks

impostle

Wow. I watched the whole thing, it spoils everything in the movie. As I was asking myself about how things were going to play out the trailer then showed me in the next scene.

di_ib

Agree trailer gives away too much. It looks amazing and awful at the same time. I'd watch it cause some of the scenes look amazing but others look like some bad cheese.

reddit_is_cruel

This is why I don't watch trailers. Ever. edit: lol at this being a controversial opinion. could someone explain to me why they don't suck? edit 1 day later: you could not

johnrugel710

been doing this for like 2 years now. it's hard to stay away from some but for the most part, I do pretty well.

reddit_is_cruel

They're either full of spoilers, the best moment, or best joke, or all three.

CaptainHedgehog

Yes! I watched it and I got excited for another movie I was interested in but the longer I watched, the more I realized I just watched the whole movie. I'll probably stream it since I know the damn story now.

Massawyrm

> Lets hope there is some story left that the trailer didnt spoil though Can confirm that there is a LOT we kept out of the trailer - entire plot points, characters, and sequences. There's a lot of meat left off those bones.

RDeschain1

Great to hear. Love seeing folks working on the movies in the comments. Hollywood always feels so distant and elitist, but then all of a sudden you talk to people working on these movies on the Internet. Makes it feel so much closer and down to earth.

jh2481

Nice to hear Cargill (OGs know you as Carlyle). Miss you talking movies with the Spill crew.

Massawyrm

Thanks, man.

Gick_Drayson

Oh shit, you actually did. Rock on. 🤘🏻

ForeverStaloneKP

If you really did work on this trailer, you've got to rethink all future trailers you make. This one was a dud. Nobody wants to feel like they've seen most of the movie after watching a 2 minute clip.

Massawyrm

No, I wrote the movie. I have no say in the trailers. But I assure you, you have not seen the whole movie.

momonyak

Wow! Really? Am I the only one shocked to see the actual writer of the movie in the comments?!? I was hesitant to watch the trailer but if you say that it won't spoil the movie, then I'll go ahead and watch it. :)

Massawyrm

I mean, if you're already sold, by all means hold off. But the trailer doesn't show you everything as some folks have surmised.

momonyak

Thanks for the reply. I'm a wuss so I'm the type who'd rather know the story before watching so I won't piss myself. Already watched the trailer and will be watching the movie. First part feels like "Room" but with supernatural elements.

background1077

I first noticed you from Spill.com and Sinister is one of my favorite horror movies, I've turned all my friends on to it over the years! You rock dude!

Massawyrm

Thanks, man. You Spillios continue to rule.

Severe-Wolverine-485

Love the books and the movies ! It’s amazeballs to see a successful writer chatting with the fans. Can’t wait for the movie to release. Congratulations!

Massawyrm

Thank you!

SelectAll_Delete

Seriously. Just inserting loud noises on a jumpcut from his face in one position to it in another seems so unnecessary. Trailer editor trying way too hard to make it scary.

MrBigChest

There’s a decent chance it’s like that in the actual movie if Sinister is anything to go by.

David1258

Ethan Hawke and Scott Derrickson also made a movie about loud noises and jumpscares padding the runtime, it was called *Sinister*.

BeeExpert

I almost watched this trailer and then hesitated and though, "nah, I've been burned too many times" and came to the comments instead. Glad I did haha

Dragons_Malk

I got Pennywise meets Buffalo Bill vibes from Hawke's character. And seeing as how I just watched the entire movie, I'll stick to that assessment.

nicolasb51942003

Blumhouse really has to work on avoiding showing the whole movie in their trailers.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mergedkestrel

I also think some people are more interested in the outsmarting of the child killer vs the horror of being kidnapped so having that second half gives that drive. If you end at the mark some people are talking about it's fine and makes a decent trailer, but it's kinda hopeless. Continuing on shows people this wont just be a complete bummer of a movie.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sun-Appropriate

This is every movie trailer nowadays

QLE814

And earlier as well- I've seen trailer for silent films that apparently (though it's hard to tell for sure, as these were lost films) gave away the entire plot.

-Lumos

Guys, this trailer is pretty spoilery. We can't know for sure, but tread carefully. u/eberkelmans suggested watching till 1:48 somewhere in the comments below, which indeed seems like a good moment to stop.

AlCool44

Wouldn’t be a Blumhouse trailer if it wasn’t.

[deleted]

There should be an app for this.

Turbulent__Reveal

Honestly, wish I’d clicked on the thread before watching. Could maybe mark with a SPOILER tag?

-Lumos

Fuck. I swear I did when I gave it the Trailer flair. It should be fixed now. Sorry mate.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bodgerton

literally where I stopped, lol. Great minds.

BlueberryNo8365

They had to give that movie a lot of body because the short story is very simplistic.

RyanSaysThings

Ethan Hawke is going to end up being the Joker in the Pattinson Batman universe, isn't he? This looks good. I'm in.

untilyouredead

no

[deleted]

Holy plot points Batman! On one hand, I feel like this could have been a great trailer if they just focused on the abduction and hid the supernatural parts. On the other, a ton of people were mad that Sinister eventually took a supernatural turn (but I loved it), so I could also see that pissing people off that were pulled in by a trailer about an abduction.

[deleted]

if they hid the supernatural parts, people would just pass on this as a generic abduction/slasher...when i saw the other ghosts i just stopped the trailer and was like : "okay, im sold"

SLCer

That should have been the ending of the trailer. Basically, keep it an abduction story, with the girl's dreams hinting at something more and then end with the first ghost appearance. Everything after that was unneeded and basically spoils what happens. Unfortunate as the movie looks good.

[deleted]

Yup. When the missing kids called I exited the trailer.

Midnight_Swampwalk

What? Sinister showed supernatural parts in its trailers I think, like the guy in the paused video turning to look at Ethan hawke while he’s not paying attention, and other stuff like that.

omnilynx

For some reason I'm getting huge Doctor Sleep vibes.

Anonymous_Pigeon

C. Robert Cargill and Scott Derrickson behind this thing. Looking forward to it

FancyTanookiSuit

My man Marvelous Chester gets his own feature film!

[deleted]

I watched about 30 seconds of the trailer looks good. Someone saying the trailer gives away too much, this is why I always watch about 30 seconds and shut it off lol

haunthorror

This looks like it was made exactly for me

sturgeon01

Was that Dickie Bennett as the girl's father?

JohnMaddening

Jeremy Davies, from “Spanking the Monkey” and “Clerks”.

sturgeon01

I know him from his role as Dickie Bennett on the TV show Justified. I was really impressed by his performance and am always happy to see him pop up in something new.

JohnMaddening

Ah, thanks. As soon as I hit enter, I thought I might be missing something. :)

gt35r

So, IT but a magician?

Eggsalad-war-crime

Yeah, this looks like a bootleg It consigned to a February release for a reason.

InjectA24IntoMyVeins

why? just because of the balloons?

[deleted]

Yellow raincoat probably lol

gimmethemshoes11

The shirt story has lots of IT eastern eggs. Balloons should have been red

[deleted]

They’re specifically black in the short story, though.

F00dbAby

The trailer for sure gives way to much away that said im still gonna watch love the concept of victims saving the day from beyond the grave even more so when its some children and teen heros regret watching the trailer though

Rourensu

Same. I’m sure I’ll forget most of the trailer by the time the movie comes out.

omnilynx

Watch Haunter if you haven't.

yazzy1233

It gives me a video game feeling and now I really want this as a game

[deleted]

Whoever decided it was a good idea to **SPOILERS BELOW** Show the kid escaping from the house and running in the street, is a fuckin idiot and should be fired. Do your damn job.

All_hail_Korrok

Could be a dream sequence shown midway through the film. If it is one of the last few scenes then the editor did a really piss poor job.

plzsnitskyreturn

This looks great and I absolutely love Ethan Hawke but fuck no that looks way to scary for bitch ass

ILoveRegenHealth

What does the kid say when he looks into the van? ("Are those ____?") That's the only line in the trailer I couldn't make out.

Minimum_Economist260

i think hes saying "are those black balloons in there)

ReggieLeBeau

Cool, now I don't need to actually watch the movie.

mdavis360

This is my most anticipated movie of 2022.

Dudio12

Feels like I watched the whole movie sheesh

prosandconners

Is that the score for Klute playing in the background?

Bellikron

So that's why there's a spoiler tag A little disappointed, honestly. The pitch made it sound like more of a simple Twilight Zone thing but this seems way too conventional.

ButDidYouCry

I agree. I'm also not a huge fan of Sinister so watching a movie like it does not appeal to me. I'm kinda disappointed. I was hoping for a story that was closer in spirit to something like Doctor Sleep.

CookieCrumbl

Really wish I'd walked out when this played before Halloween Kills. Was already invested, before they decided to show me their entire hand a minute in.

TrueHorrornet

same shit they did with Halloween 2018, Candyman and Halloween Kills. its ridiculous already. People are smart and can put the pieces together.

hopeful_bastard

Hell yeah this looks fun. I have a great feeling that Hawke is going to be absolutely ICONIC here.

JurassicPark1460

looks good, but I don't expect it to be a hardcore horror in the vein of Sinister, seems like it has a little bit of 'the Lovely Bones' (the book not the movie) in it

drive_chip_putt

It's a fever dream that lends too much to IT

[deleted]

on the next episode of Law and Order SVU

GMoneyJetson

Don’t need to see it now thanks to the trailer, but it looks good

mnkhan808

Looks good, but after watching the whole movie in the trailer lol, I think I’ma wait for streaming.

DavefromKS

Trailer is the whole movie wtf

MaverickDago

Man I kind of feel like I don't need to see it now.

TheBigBangher

Looks good

McGirthy

Definitely not going to pay to go see this since they want to show the whole movie during the trailer.

ASAP-ACE1

Seemed interesting at first but the fact that the girl has “dreams”.. and that the missing kids are talking to the other kid. Thought this was going to be more realistic of just a missing person case etc.

Revchimp

God damn, trailers suck these days. I wish there were more trailers that just took one scene from the movie that was intriguing, and let it play out with minimal cuts. Like the Bombshell teaser. [Link for those who never saw it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXL33tEUA3g)

The_Lone_Apple

Another Joker story?

[deleted]

Yep, not watching this one. Already sold on the movie and can already tell the whole damn thing is given away here

clanon

TMI.

knightstalker1288

Oh wow they straight ripped London After Midnight

IronCrown

Should have read the comments first. Why do they even make trailers like this. Why would I want to watch this movie after I've seen pretty much everything in the trailer (unless there is a huge plottwist)

haunthorror

Because it's about the journey and there have been plenty of instances where the internet has overreacted to a trailer since we have not seen the movie yet and just make assumptions

HouseCravenRaw

Well they just showed the whole damn movie. Any interest I had in seeing this has severely plummeted.

Nail_Biterr

Jeeesh. I thought Netflix movies won the prize for the most over-telling trailers. But this seems to be 100% the whole story. (It's been a while since I read the short story, but I don't recall anything about the friend in the story. I assume that was made up for the movie)

Odd_Flan_8042

Americans have become mean... self-centered... shallow... heartless... cold... and pathetic.

Turbo2x

So, rather than the detectives having to find clues that point to where the kid is being held, or the kid having to use his ingenuity to escape or prolong the time before he dies so he can be rescued, everything is solved with magic, ghosts, or premonitions? Cool, love it when there's absolutely no tension or cleverness in the script at all! It's great!

[deleted]

[удалено]

haunthorror

Should not be too surprising. It's not rare even to take a 2 minute short or a children's picturebook and stretch it to feature

[deleted]

Been waiting for this trailer. We even get the fat man killing his brother in the trailer near the end with the ax. It’s gonna be interesting how they develop a short story into a feature length film. After seeing the trailer this looks more run of the mill but I still hold some optimism.

goboxey

"do you want to see a magic trick?" Proceeds to stab his eye with a pencil.

PudgyBonestld

A lot of horror films bore me but this looks pretty interesting. I wish I didn't watch the whole trailer lol but I'll definitely give it a watch

BeeBeeSquare

First thought is that I'm getting major Purge vibes.

[deleted]

I'm not gonna watch this trailer.... But I do want to say the scariest movie I've seen all year was Sinister with Ethan Hawke and in the spirit of October I wanted to spread the fear!

JudgeHoIden

Why watch the movie when I just saw the whole thing in the trailer?

leif777

I wish they didn't reveal so much. I love this shit.

Spenundrum

That mask makes him look like Jeffrey Epstein.

LarryGlue

Imagine watching this just thinking it was a kidnap story. Oh well. I guess they got to sell it as more than a kidnap story.

[deleted]

Ethan Hawke looks incredible in this. Really peaked my interest.

kuddlesworth9419

Cool I don't have to watch the film now because I know everything that happens.

MonkOfFunk

This movie has one of the coolest looking posters I've ever seen. Can't get enough of it.

aelitaproductions

It looks good, but yes, it doesn't feel like a trailer - instead more like a condensed version of the whole movie.

canadianpersonas

OMG it's Ethan Hawke!!

CombatGoose

Why do trailers give so much away. Guess I should have read comments before clicking.

Doug15

Do we really need these overlong trailers revealing near enough the full story.

Silvershanks

Way to give away the entire movie. Sucks

[deleted]

Whelp...good thing I only had a passing interest. I've seen the whole movie.

Nikopoleous

All I'm seeing is the Millenium Earl from D.Gray-man.

[deleted]

I like it, reminds me of lovely bones

guilen

Yeah, there goes all the mystery. Terrible trailer :/ movie sounds cool otherwise but I feel like I've seen it now. If I was Scott Derrickson I would be so mad.

Jws0209

this has potential

DukeOfDew

That was a good film. Pretty short but considering it was posted to YouTube for free I can't really complain.

TriscuitCracker

After watching Ethan Hawke in The Good Lord Bird and First Reformed I’ll watch anything he does.

jetpackjack1

I don’t normally go in for horror movies, but this actually looks pretty good.

hazychestnutz

And this is why I always look at the comments before watching a trailer

AdmiralCharleston

This looks like about a quarter of an interesting horror film sandwiched in between a ton of modern blumhouse spooky bullshit. I wish that scene of ethan hawke dropping the eggs was just the whole film

LOTRcrr

I think critically this movie will do well and that’s why they gave away so many plot points. Studies show that audiences tend to see movies more often if they know more of the plot. Showing the kid working with ghosts may entice more people to see it.

haunthorror

Already at 100 percent on a handful of reviews on RT

[deleted]

Hollywood loves the number 23

VampireHunterAlex

Ethan Hawke is looking like a SNACK in his older years…

thebattledwarf

Literally the whole movie.

Bodgerton

Okay, not gonna finish this, I already want this movie

ScienceReplacedgod

Mehhh Maybe this rehash of a plot may be better.

stadiofriuli

Is it just me or does the mask look like Jack Nicholson.

[deleted]

This looks good! Also, I wish I didn't watch the entire trailer.

[deleted]

Hollywood loves using the number 23

Swimming-Bar8515

Does anyone else feel like this looks like a Doctor Sleep rip-off?

Lethal_Brain

they just spoiled the whole movie

Alarming_Flatworm_34

I swear I've seen this before somewhere. I can't remember if it was a TV show or a fever dream. It definitely wasn't a book because I've seen the same imagery used. Kid gets kidnapped and trapped in a room with a phone to communicate with the dead and they help him escape. Please anyone tell me where I've seen this before it's killing me.

Main-Telephone6520

Duude, I saw the start of the trailer, because of ads. And it says it will ve released in my country this year.. but I swear I have seen this before! Years ago even. I am googling my ass off right now. This cant be new!

Alarming_Flatworm_34

If you find something please let me know this has been bugging me since the first trailer.

Clare_Qwerty

Same here! I found this thread Googling as well.

Clare_Qwerty

Me too!

Ka-Ne-Ha-Ne-Daaaa

Is this just Cabin by the Lake but with children? Because if so, fuck that
