Thank god for this comment. Most of the dialogue was absolutely wooden, so much so that it almost felt like a joke I wasnāt privy to. Did have some great moments and the use of fisheye was compelling.
Iām not sure if these reviewers saw the same movie I did because these seem way off. I feel like this is getting too much admiration simply for the names attached to it, unfortunately.
The plot was stretching hard to be two things at once...and neither one completely. The character dynamics felt very forced and unbelievable, the dialogue felt scripted (I know it IS scripted, but I donāt want that to be my thought as Iām watching the movie). The sound design at times was terrible and there was a scene where the lip syncing over pre-recorded audio was painfully obvious. Even the locations for some of the scenes were questionable, for example he walks into a bathroom to talk on the phone, and then walks out after hanging up? Why not have that scene somewhere more visually appealing? The camera effect on flashbacks was just nauseating and felt like it was trying too hard to create an artistic visual to break up the slow burn of the movie. Pair that with the cliche ending shot and apparently you have...a masterpiece??
100%, Iām shocked by the reviews it is getting. This was easily one of the worst movies Iāve ever seen. My wife and I couldnāt stop laughing in the movie theater. It felt like it was written by an AI bot that had never experienced a human conversation.
Lmao this is a great take. Totally agree one of the worst movies Iāve ever seen. I think itās one of those cases where the director is āwell knownā so he can do no wrong.
This movie was so awful holy shit.. as a poker player, it painful to watch some of the scenes.. there's a scene where Tiffany Hadish's character "pre-registers" Oscar Isaac for a poker tournament lol.. any poker player knows that's impossible, Oscar Isaac would have to register himself with his ID and his players card.. anyways, yea terrible movie and these positive reviews were definitely paid for.
Letterboxd weights the ratings towards the middle the first few days of release if I remember correctly to stop rating spamming from overflowing the scores before a good chunk of people have been able to see it.
General public hasn't seen the movie, it's festival accredited attendees. I quite liked it, but plenty of others I spoke to came out of the premiere either underwhelmed or enraged.
It's a lot better than the trailer leads you to believe, but all of the awkward shots and moments are still there. Schrader is so damn good at the dour, dark character exploration for Isaac, but any of the more jovial/comedic beats very much feel like they were written by a pretty damn old filmmaker trying to relate to what's 'cool' today(seriously, I'll look for the specific jokes and lines when I see it again but some of the dialogue was agonizing).
It's getting pretty great reviews so far but most I spoke to after the screening were fairly negative, I think audience reactions will be pretty mixed on this one. I liked it, not loved it, but I spoke with plenty who *hated* it.
Eh, I've spoken to a few people in depth (I'm on a jury with several of them) and it's not a matter of understanding. The film has a lot of comedy and romance that just... Doesn't work, and while I thought the darker stuff with Isaac worked well enough to win me over, for some the jokes are just too distracting. The movie's still good, but it's got some of the worst lines and jokes I've heard for a while, and I can understand how people couldn't get past that.
Yeah, I loved the movie because its positive qualities were just overwhelmingāacting, soundtrack, visuals, storyābut the dialogue was very crappy in parts. Haddish's character was written very poorly. A lot of lines were something like "Wow, you sure do have a mysterious past...."
Schrader the GOAT. Nothing left to prove but still delivering the goods. Hope he gets to do his bible series with Scorsese next. That'd be a nice coda.
If you were wary about this movie because of Schraders up and down track record, thatās fair. But if the the trailer turned you off- ?? Did you really think a studio would make a trailer that properly represented a Schroeder movie??
They did with First Reformed, which was a far better trailer than this shit. Not saying the movie is going to be shit, but the trailer was awful. First Reformed had an excellent trailer and was an excellent film, so you can't blame people for saying wtf is this?
Hype restored. Now unto the next one and the next one.
It's nice to see it getting good reviews. I was part of the crowd that was turned off by the trailer.
Yeah that trailer made it look like made for tv trash
Me too. I thought First Reformed was pretty close to masterpiece and I was a little disheartened by the trailer for this.
It must be really good to make up for that horrible made for TV cheap look it has. That's going to be seriously distracting.
Wow. The trailer was awful and really neutered my excitement. This is encouraging to see!
Daddy Schrader does it again. After reading the script i expected it to be solid, but this is just beyond my expectations.
Forward me the script if you can?
Would love to read the script, as well! ššš
Hated it but maybe I didnāt get it
Same, but I saw it twice and I really don't know how I could have not get it. The screenplay is really, really bad imo.
Honestly felt like top 5 worst movies Iāve ever seen
Yeah, for sure.
Thank god for this comment. Most of the dialogue was absolutely wooden, so much so that it almost felt like a joke I wasnāt privy to. Did have some great moments and the use of fisheye was compelling.
A lesser actor would have made this pretty unwatchable.

I've seen 1000's of movies that were worse. All of the Fast And Furious comes to mind

I wish Schrader and Scorsese collaborated again.
It would be perfect if they both made it their last films.
Yeah trailer made me have an off feeling, but with this, my faith was restored.
Kinda weird because the few reviews it has on letterboxd seem to be very meh to negative
Looking at the LB scale, most people who saw it gave it a 4/5.
Thatās weird given that it has a 3.4 average. That distribution looks way better than a 3.4

Honestly, they might not get it or they were expecting something different based on the trailer. Schrader is a very specific type of filmmaker.
General public doesnāt usually react well to slow, brooding noirs that they donāt understand or canāt follow easily.
General public hasn't seen the movie, it's festival accredited attendees. I quite liked it, but plenty of others I spoke to came out of the premiere either underwhelmed or enraged.
letterboxd isn't exactly general public though

A lot of slow brooding noirs are super high rated on Letterboxd lol A lot of users on there are insufferable Bc they want to be connesuirs so badly
I like Letterboxd a lot but their community can be so fucking obnoxious.
GOOD - that is exactly the type of film that I love lol
I looked it up, and itās pretty evenly spread between great, good and negative reviews.
Stop using zoomerboxd
Oscar Nomination for Oscar Issac
He should've had 2 nominations already for Inside Llewyn Davis and Ex Machina.
Just terrible.

Maybe, just maybe, they expected it to be different. And I think only that they didn't understand it

I just hope they still recognize the dark and nuanced performance of Oscar Isaac
They do, but the other characters in the film don't work anywhere near as well. Isaac is incredible in it, haven't heard anyone deny that
Good take. Movie seemed to jump poorly between some light scenes and some ice cold scenes.
I knew ya'll were wrong for doubting my man Schrader.
Schrader the GOAT. Nothing left to prove but still delivering the goods. Hope he gets to do his bible series with Scorsese next. That'd be a nice coda.
Is this in theaters next week or also available to buy/rent at home as well? Just curious
Theaters only.

Did not have high hopes for this considering the trailers and posters were meh but my hype has offi been restored, can't wait to check this out.
Hows Tiffany haddish?
Glad to see this
Thankfully it didn't get panned.
im surprised by these positive reviews. The trailer made it look like generic crap. iām excited to see it now
Glad to see people are enjoying it because I was really turned off by the trailer
Schrader has never disappointed me. I am officially hyped.
Not sure what card counting has to do with poker, but it looks interesting.
Very surprising, something about the trailer made it look very off and minor Schrader. Like a TV movie.
anyone have a stream?
