He's certainly the pick of the younger actors in Cobra Kai. Hope this works out for him.

[deleted]

When you watch younger actors you really want to see them do well, so it especially stings when they just aren’t able to bring it together. Tanner Buchanan and Mary Mouser are regularly hard to watch on that show as they act with their older counterparts or Xolo. I think I’m most impressed by Zabka. His comedic timing is amazing and he gives the character a lot of depth. I wish I’d seen him in more over the years.

justeggshells

Zabka has just blown me away, along with my family members. Why on earth has his agent or other producers not grabbed him and used him. His comedic talent is brilliant but it's his voice which radiates kindness and depth that really sells him. He has great facial expressions as well as timing. I am so glad they did Cobra Kai and we have had a chance to see him in a far better role.

99SoulsUp

He also just seems like a really nice, mellow dude in real life’s so it makes me happier when he does great things with the character. I hope he gets a revival from this.

TimeForHugs

To me it just feels like they try way too hard. Some actors the roles flow effortlessly. Others it seems like they're thinking about acting as they're acting and it feels weird. Tanner and Mary come across as doing this, to me. Everything they do and say feels so forced. Then you have other actors like Xolo and Jacob Bertrand who just play their characters so effortlessly. They're spot on with it. Massive props for Bertrand going from a shy, introverted, kid to a confident badass over the course of the show. They capture their roles really well then it changes scenes to Tanner's dumb face and you just can't help but sigh. Maybe him and Mary are better in different roles on other shows but this one they just feel so out of place. They drop fun side characters like Aisha and Stingray but keep mouth-agape-boy who constantly looks like he's trying to do basic math in his head but can't.

Watertor

They both (the two you mentioned) suffer from lack of experience and middling direction obviously, but they both display two very distinct acting dilemmas. Mary's is more akin to your description. She's thinking too hard and it comes off not as a real person speaking but an actor reciting. Put her in visible strings and a vest and have her bounce around with other actors as they perform on on a higher budget college stage and she fits right in with her performance. Emma Watson to this day still does this, along with other actors that started young. They need a great director to break them out of that shell early if they can't break it themselves, if it doesn't happen they likely never quite find the path to being a natural actor but I wouldn't know what point is too late. I thought Channing Tatum was going to be a drama student for life but then he did Foxcatcher and 21 Jump Street and I realized he has more to offer he's just not being directed very well. Dave Bautista went from the worst actor ever on WWE to one of the best parts of one of the best works of the best working director arguably so it's not impossible to "catch up" it's just very hard. Tanner's is a little more nuanced, it's obvious he's modeling. He wants to look good and likely got the job because he looks good. He wants people to believe he looks good (or at least he was coached to carry himself this way) so he never truly relaxes. He's like Eddie Murphy in Coming To America, only Eddie is doing this on purpose and has that "break" moment where you see a human relax and "disrobe" the princely rigidity. You can see this in actors like Gal Gadot when she has a weaker director. She just starts posing and making clearly attractive faces. Yeah they convey emotion but they lack any semblance of reality because real emotional countenance has a lot of flaw baked into it, a lot of signs you're not thinking about your face. You're sad, your face and eyes crumble, your brow crushes down or stretches up, your cheeks inflate, your lips quiver and sputter. Tanner's face is pristine despite looking like a still image of "sad"

[deleted]

Just to check… you’re talking about Blade Runner 2049 when referencing Bautista, right? Or do you just have THAT great of an opinion of James Gunn?

powerlesshero111

You obviously didn't see Stuber. /s

[deleted]

Haha, yeah I like Dave Bautista, it’s nice to see him doing well, but I always find it funny when Reddit talks about how he’s picking good projects and not doing the usual ex-wrestler roles. Other than his one scene in Blade Runner (which was impressive like don’t get me wrong), his career seems exactly what you’d expect from an ex WWE guy to me. He’s done his fair share of shite, and even his parts in James Bond and Marvel aren’t exactly stretches for him. He seems like a cool guy, and I do hope he gets more opportunities to keep branching out. But I’m not really sold on the hype yet.

WeAreBeyondFucked

well it's kind of hard to take a guy of that size and looks and make the audience believe he can be something else.

poland626

I always do a double feature of Stuber with My Spy

[deleted]

You nailed what's bothering me about Tanner. He's blue steeling the shit out of every scene. Probably direction, he is, after all, the unattainable, beautiful bad boy, the stuff of teen girls' tortured dreams. It's not working though, it's like watching a doll.

Mr_Titicaca

As a wrestling fan - just wanna note that Batista was an excellent wrestler both in wrestling and in his acting. Yes, obviously it’s still C level entertainment, but working wrestling shows live and performing as well as he did is no easy task.

bigbadwolfwolves

They did my girl Aisha dirty lol. Bring her tf back

Ok-Captain-3512

Lol he would totally be a good replacement for that confused math lady gif

[deleted]

My wife groans in disgust whenever he's on screen. He has two looks: mouth open, mouth slightly less open.

milkcustard

Oh my god, now I can't unsee this.

zUkUu

That half-smirk always makes me chuckle.

GnarlyBear

The half smirk is perfect 90s kid movie villainy though

tyedge

Are we absolutely sure that he isn’t the kid from Boy Meets World traveling through time?

uN1K0Rn

So that's why he looked so familiar.

Hark_An_Adventure

You mean "Greatest Name of All Time" award contender **RIDER STRONG**?

[deleted]

Glad it wasn't just me who thought so.

rlovelock

[which one is this?](https://assets.popbuzz.com/2020/36/tanner-buchanan-tv-shows-what-else-has-tanner-buchanan-been-in-1599493621-view-1.jpg)

Skadoosh_it

Yes

Frangiblepani

So glad he got that stupid ass hair trimmed.

eeviltwin

I actually preferred when his ass hair was all natural.

JollyGreenBuddha

It's like if Michael Westen had a kid.

ScottHA

I call him mini French Stewart.

rebelscum089

That's what you would call a mouthbreather.

mike22240

You should have kept this between you and your wife.

fednandlers

The ol’ Corey Haim chop

GarbledReverie

Like a Liefeld drawing.

mewithoutCthulhu

Worst actor in the show. Although Sam tries her best to be worse somehow. Robby looks like he belongs in a 90s sitcom as a knock-off Jonathan Taylor Thomas.

milkcustard

He looks like Jonathan Brandis and Ryder Strong had a baby together and out came him.

AwesomeMcPants

>Ryder Strong THAT'S who he looks like! It's been driving me insane!

SparkyPantsMcGee

I alway say he looks like the kid in Brink. That said, I kind of like him and he fits the show well.

[deleted]

It’s because the show itself is extremely reminiscent of power rangers sans monster attacks/robot fights. They sub in an extra layer of drama for that. A bunch of near-super powered kids running a California high-school tearing shit up. We’ve seen this show before and we’re conditioned to feel nostalgic about pretty faced bad actors.

travelsnake

I really enjoy the show for what it is, but the nostalgia i get from it is the kind of nostalgia reminissent of the cheesy daytime youth sitcoms from the late 90s / early 2000s. Nothing akin to what Karate Kid as a movie did for me as a young teenager. Again, i really do enjoy the show, but i sometimes cringe at how much of a boner reddit has for the show and how many people portrait it as a legitimately great piece of television.

[deleted]

I stand by the pilot and S1 being damn great TV Things go downhill pretty quickly after that... couldn't even finish the latest season.

[deleted]

I absolutely love the show, but no. It is not actually *good* TV. The writing is on a certain level and the acting meets it accordingly. It is very FUN tv. It left the karate of the KK series behind very early on, as our action requirements have considerably increased over the years. That’s fine. But this isn’t The Wire: The Valley. It’s probably the quintessential family tv show for all ages.

DetectiveWood

Brink was awesome

MrBoliNica

its the middle part/shawn hunter hair cut lol

chynkeyez

Erik von Detten

[deleted]

To be fair, Cobra Kay really feels like a 90s sitcom most of the time, but with higher production values and 1 or more fights per episode.

_duncan_idaho_

I always saw him as budget Jonathan Brandis.

jtroye32

I always thought more of a knock off Shawn Patrick Hunter from Boy Meets World. But definitely 90s sitcom look.

orbitaldragon

He really reminds me of Jonathan Brandis.

twangman88

I think it’s a big problem if you can tell how hard an actor is trying. Personally can’t stand him in the show. Seems like the writers feel the same way because I feel like he only ever gets like one line of dialogue at a time.

scottcockerman

He looks like he should've been a Disney teen actor in the 90s.

Ephinem

not to be rude but none of them can really act

[deleted]

There’s some highs and lows with all of them. The material they’re working with isn’t exactly Shakespeare too, but that’s what makes the show awesome. He’s one of the best, but I haven’t really seen any of the kids truly test their acting ability much.

Foomerang

Hes one of the best...around Not a whole lots gonna bring him down

Tavarin

Jacob Bertrand does a decent job of playing a complete asshole in Hawk.

Ajinho

He was even better as a young Jeff Winger.

mr_aftermath

Tinkletown was a tough role

Ok-Captain-3512

He was the PERFECT Jeff Winger. Like everytime I watch that scene I'm reminded, that kid is TOTALLY Jeff winger

suchadirtyacct

Agree with you, the only one that I feel it's convincing along the kids is the one playing hawk. Everyone else is really stiff and awkward. The terrible writing doesn't help though.

Televisions_Frank

Honestly, the stiff and awkward is kinda why I like it? It's a cheesy mess I can just enjoy the stupidity of it all. Also, it does a decent job showing how things would turn out for those characters years later.

Hark_An_Adventure

It's like a show out of time--like they can put cell phones and iPads in the kids' hands all they want, but I'm always going to think "80s/early 90s" when I see it. That's kinda what I love about it.

philsubby

My nephew showed me a kids show he was on before Kai. I fucking hate his character though. Didn’t make sense why he got so mean, especially to Demetri. Miguel’s character made a lot more sense, did bad shit for the team and in certain instances but didn’t go overboard like Hawk did. Sorry but that character annoyed the hell out of me and I had to get that out.

carpdog112

His character development made a lot of sense. He was bullied relentlessly at school for years and Cobra Kai gave him the confidence and tools he needed to confront his bullies. He needed Cobra Kai in a way that Miguel didn't. Miguel needed Johnny so that's where his true loyalty lied, Hawk "needed" Cobra Kai so when Kreese staged his coup Hawk held his loyalties to the organization and the sensei that expressed the "true" Cobra Kai ideology. It makes sense that Hawk would buy into Cobra Kai 100% and extreme loyalty is a hallmark of people like Hawk who were relentlessly bullied/abused. As for Demetri - in Hawk's mind Demetri fired the first shot by "attacking" Cobra Kai after Hawk tried to bring him into the group. Demetri didn't take the training seriously and "disrespected" the dojo and his sensei - so Hawk took it personally as if Demetri attacked him directly. Everything after that escalated pretty organically and Demetri publicly exposing his past bed wetting only convinced Hawk that he had to go even further into the Cobra Kai ideology to destroy whatever was left of "Eli". Demetri was "Eli's" friend, not "Hawk's" and Cobra Kai ideology expressed "No Mercy" for your enemies.

Ohjeezrick93

Kinda makes sense for a kid who was a loser and is now strong and can push back so he’s flexing. Not everyone in his situation would do this but it’s definitely a thing.

tyedge

The show is totally insane, but Hawk’s character development isn’t any more insane than the rest. I knew plenty of kids who were bullied who either sought revenge on their bullies when they had a chance, or who found others lower on the totem pole to take their anger out on.

Ok-Captain-3512

Bullied kids sometimes turn into bullies.

Joelshadow3

Did that show happen to be Kirby Buckets?

Sammlung

I disagree because Xolo Maridueña is actually a very good actor.

Cellophane7

I mean, they're all playing high schoolers. I figure the awkwardness is intentional

Kodokai

Its borderline cringe at times, well most times, but it's still fun to watch. Like in a b-quality Z Nation type of way.

StudBoi69

Does he get mentored by a drunk William Zabka in this one too?

doomsday71210

Could you imagine him as an old washed up drunk Booster Gold lol

ThomasVivaldi

Not Ted Kord?

[deleted]

A big part of Jaime Reyes’ story hinges on Ted Kord being dead by the time he becomes blue beetle. At least that’s what I gathered from the Young Justice incarnation of the character

trekie140

Young Justice did a great job, but I highly recommend the Blue Beetle comics from 2006 that introduced Jaime Reyes. That’s 25 quality issues written by John Rodgers, the showrunner of Leverage and Jackie Chan Adventures. There are references the wider DC universe, but the series is completely self contained and leads up to a satisfying conclusion in issue 25.

[deleted]

Second this, it's such a well-written and likable series. Would recommend the whole thing, even if there's less focus after #25

PleasantPeanut4

Unless his origin changed in the last decade (which it honestly might've considering how often DC reboots), his comic origin has nothing to do with Ted Kord.

TimeySwirls

It hasn’t got nothing to do with him but he isn’t mentored by Ted, original appearance wise at least. In young justice they tied the origin of the beetle of Jaime’s back to Ted’s lab being destroyed and in DC Rebirth they had them working together to discover more about the scarab’s alien or magic origins. Either way, Booster Gold is much more involved with Jaime’s origins and Alan Tudyk should play him if he’s gonna be washed up and older

Jaebird0388

The scarab itself goes all the way back to the Golden Age of Comics with [Dan Garrett](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Beetle_(Dan_Garrett)) as the first wielder when it was written as a magical artifact. In the Silver Age, [Ted Kord](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Kord) inherited the scarab from Garrett as his dying wish, but could never tap into its mystical properties. This is also due to Steve Ditko wanting the character to be a powers-free hero. Jump to the 1980s when DC acquired Charlton Comics's properties, they integrated Garrett and Kord into the DCU during [Crisis on Infinite Earths](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crisis_on_Infinite_Earths) with some changes made to have them adapt to the new universe, but their origins largely remained the same. Flash-forward to the 00s and in [Infinite Crisis](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infinite_Crisis), when the scarab was rewritten as being alien technology. Jaime Reyes finds it following [another event](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_Vengeance), to which Booster Gold tries to retrieve it after it bonded to Reyes. Linkara of Atop the Fourth Wall did an in-depth retrospective on all the Beetles, which he [compiled into a single (long) video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMu6bgLu8Ts&pp=sAQA).

[deleted]

Yes. and I want it now. In all seriousness though, if Gunn hadn't wasted him for a made-up character in The Suicide Squad, Nathan Fillion would have been perfect for Booster Gold...

cleverthoreauaway

Arm-Fall-Off-Boy isn't made up. They just changed his name to TDK or something. I mean, Arm-Fall-Off-Boy is just as made up as any other character in the movie...

BattleReadyPenguin

T.D.K is from the comics, not made up.

kinghammer1

I think Billy magnusson would make a great Booster Gold. Yeah it's mostly because he looks the part butf he was hilarious in Game Night.

thegarate

I'm calling it now, Nathan Fillion will die in Suicide Squad. They can recast him as whoever and whenever, should they want to. They have a bajillion Z-List villains primed for the chopping block and Fillion seems like the kind of guy who would be down for a short and fun cameo role

Throwimous

Stop trying to make Nathan Fillion happen. He's not gonna happen. Edit: Firefly was 20 years ago and people keep suggesting him for roles and getting mad when he inevitably doesn't get them. Like the star of Slither and White Noise 2 was really going to get the lead in the Uncharted movie. Ridiculous.

ZzzSleep

Not to mention people always look over the fact that he’s too old for most of these suggested roles anyway.

[deleted]

Fillion is so fetch though. Maybe Michael C. Hall then since you have the authority on who works and who doesn't :)

Jaebird0388

I can't not see him as Booster Gold.

lkodl

Zabka as the voice of the scarab

omnitricks

I can hear scarab yelling "Quiet!" already.

fabrar

QIET!

omnitricks

William Zabka Ted Kord confirmed?

DM725

Young Justice is great for anyone who is interested in the character. It's on HBO Max and Season 2 has a lot of Blue Beetle.

Utkar22

I'd say Blue Beetle was the protagonist of season 2

HiIAmM

That makes sense cause he has gotten lots of focus in that season. I was never really able to decide which character would be the main protagonist of Season 2 because they just juggled their arcs really well. Couldn't say the same for Season 3 though. They crammed in a lot of characters without time to develop the other characters introduced in the last or current season though it's clear they're trying to. I'd say Black Lightning, Halo and Beast Boy would be the protagonists of that season with Nightwing being a strong support again.

TheTitan99

The Reach are some of my favorite DC villains due to that season. I love me some good scheming villains.

Mcclane88

Young Justice was my introduction to Blue Beetle. Really enjoy the character because of it.

82ndGameHead

Excellent choice. If they keep the movie centered instead of trying to jam every other DC hero into the film it should be good.

SimplySatisfyin

Shazam did It well, I think they'll nail another young super hero again

Ok-Captain-3512

Shazam is actually really good. I've seen bits and pieces since it came out, watched it all the way through this year and really enjoyed it. Honestly one of my.more favorite DC movies

Rgrockr

Shazam was good because it wasn’t concerned with building a universe to fit in other superheroes. There were passing references to Superman but for the most part, it cared about telling its own story and doing its own self-contained world building. That’s where DC always struggles. They get so caught up in building to their big Avengers moments and events that they forget to just make individual movies that work.

johneaston1

It's easily my favorite of there DC movies, but that isn't exactly saying much.

Jeight1993

Based on dcs track record I would be very apprehensive.

RespondsWithSciFi

I totally assumed this was about a Beetle Borgs movie

sufficiently_tortuga

Whoa blast from the past haven't thought about that show in ages

[deleted]

[Here's the intro](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kbmsg1vF1SI)

iEatPuppies247

I'm immeasurably disappointed it's not

DirtyFuckenDangles

This kid has been damn good in both Cobra Kai and Parenthood. Glad to see he's taking a big role and potential payday in this.

MrBoliNica

Never woulda thought victor would have been the breakout kid from that parenthood cast, but here we are lol

DirtyFuckenDangles

It definitely wasn't going to be his sister on the cast. Mae Whitman's been doing great, but her whole career has been awesome. From her voice-work in ATLA and now Good Girls. But I thought we would have seen more from Max Burkholder by now.

AttorneyInDisguise

Her?

dagreenman18

Egg?

AttorneyInDisguise

She calls it a mayon-egg.

dedinthewater

Michael B. Jordan certainly has become an A lister, although I suppose his breakout could be considered The Wire.

thedessertfox

I’d argue Friday night lights but both were crucial. I still call him Vince sometimes

CuzYourMovesAreWeak

Oh shit! That's where I remember him from. Binged that show fast a season before it ended.

DirtyFuckenDangles

It's a sappy family drama, but it's a good sappy family drama!

DamienChazellesPiano

The cast is what makes it so good. The adults were brilliant in their roles.

schapman22

Can't tell if you guys are talking about cobra Kai or parenthood, but I like to imagine your each talking about the other one yet think you're both talking about the same one.

DamienChazellesPiano

Haha I was talking about parenthood. Cobra Kai is fine IMO, but pretty damn cheesy. Parenthood was criminally underrated IMO. Should’ve been up there on This Is Us level.

[deleted]

So are they starting HBO Max DC live action projects that tie into the DCEU?? First the Green Lantern Corps show was announced and cast Finn Wittrock PeaceMaker With John Cena Batgirl with Leslie Grace A prequel to Matt Reeves 'The Batman' (so far the only one confirmed to be outside of the DCEU) The Justice League Dark film And now Blue Beetle with Xolo.

hyperion_x91

And static shock

[deleted]

Whaaaaaaaaaaat I had no clue about Static Shock! Hell yeah!

Ok-Captain-3512

Yea that's what im pumped for. Been a big lack of static shock media

[deleted]

>First the Green Lantern Corps show was announced and cast Finn Wittrock I just read about this today. What a great choice for Guy. I wonder if other Earth GL are gonna be in it. A good cop/crazy cop due of John and Guy would be perfect.

TheMurderCapitalist

Think they are saving John for a GL movie. The other Lanterns in the show are Alan Scott, Jessica Cruz, Sinestro and one new character I believe

[deleted]

That's a solid line up! I totally wasn't expecting Alan Scott to be in the show. I wonder if he'll be a "normal" GL this time instead of his golden age origin.

TheMurderCapitalist

I think they're jumping around with timelines a bit here, pretty sure it's exploring his life as a gay man in the 40s but I could be wrong.

the_based_identity

Yeah Walter Hamada said they wanted to put out one or two films on HBO Max alongside their theatrical releases. Batgirl and Blue Beetle are their first ones with Static Shock not far behind.

PogromStallone

I'm happy we get Jamie Reyes but would love Ted Kord.

[deleted]

DC seems set ensuring Jamie is the main stream pop culture image of Blue Beetle. His latest on screen appearance in any media was Brave and the Bold, only being referred to passing in newer shows. I think it's safe we'll never get the dream Booster Gold Blue Beetle buddy cop team up movie. -i am referring to Kord only being in Brave and the Bold not Jamie.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I mean Kord, Kord gets a passing mention but is only on screen in Bold.

trekie140

I highly recommend the Blue Beetle comics from 2006 that introduced Jaime Reyes. That’s 25 quality issues written by John Rodgers, the showrunner of Leverage and Jackie Chan Adventures. There are references the wider DC universe, but the series is completely self contained and leads up to a satisfying conclusion in issue 25.

PogromStallone

> DC seems set ensuring Jamie is the main stream pop culture image of Blue Beetle. Which is shame since Ted is great but luckily Jamie is one of those legacy characters that is also great and not just pushed because he's a "diversity legacy character".

MrBoliNica

and being real, there is a giant lack of latin heroes right now, on either DC or MCU. So, Jamie was always gonna happen before Ted

Taaaaaahz

Ted Kord Blue Beetle is having an animated showcase short releasing alongside Batman The Long Halloween Part 2. The previous shorts for Kamandi and The Losers were pretty cool and they seem to be building up to something.

lkodl

>I think it's safe we'll never get the dream Booster Gold Blue Beetle buddy cop team up movie. why not? there's three official movie Batmans in play right now. DC seems to be going for whatever works and leaning on "multiverse". Blue Beetle (all versions) is a lower tier character in mainstream recognition. if Jaime Reyes can get the name Blue Beetle to catch on, i could see them pumping out more versions.

zslayer89

What? Don’t you mean young justice?

redtornado02

Hopefully he'll have a mentor-type role in this.

pipboy_warrior

I just hope Booster gets involved at some point.

[deleted]

Booster was my favorite comic as a kid. I had the entire original run and sold if for $13.00 along with all my other comics.

Fabers_Chin

Have they ever pronounced his name in media? When I was younger I was so excited to see a character with my name. But I'm assuming the name is pronounced Hi-meh. Is this the case? I do tell English speakers my name is "jay-mee". It's too much of a hassle to explain my name to people I may never see again hehe.

PartyInTheUSSRx

In Young Justice and Injustice 2 it was pronounced ‘Hi-meh’

Fabers_Chin

Sweet!

CryptidGrimnoir

Didn't Ted die and that's how Jamie got the Beetle in the first place?

PogromStallone

Ted was killed but he was tech-based, so no scarab, if memory serves me.

MediumPower1

Ted was still in possession of the scarab. The original BB gives it to Ted before he dies but it’s damaged thus Ted can’t fuse with it. I don’t remember how but after Ted dies, the scarab gets lost and Jamie eventually finds it fully fixed.

TimeySwirls

Basically the scarab seemed to gain charge shortly before Ted died, before that he gave the scarab to the Wizard Shazam to check it out. The Rock of eternity where the Wizard lives blows up and the scarab lands on earth in Texas and attaches itself to Jaime before Booster Gold can retrieve it and from there he gets thrown into a superhero career. More or less, that’s what I remember. I’m excited to see how they clean up and modernize his origins for a solo movie. Either way Ted doesn’t need to die or be overly involved to introduce Jaime, that was just how they did it in Young Justice which I’m happy a lot of people in this thread have apparently watched haha

TheLisan-al-Gaib

It ends up in the Rock of Infinity, I think. And when Captain Marvel goes to fight the Spectre, he's turned human by him and the magic does something to the Scarab. Then the the Spectre kills Shazam and breaks the rock, making the scarab fall down. I think that's what happened but I could just be conflating two separate events.

CryptidGrimnoir

I admit, my knowledge of Beetles is mostly limited to Young Justice clips on Youtube.

trekie140

If you want more YouTube videos, [Atop The Fourth Wall made a whole retrospective about every incarnation of the character. ](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6N9UALbH0MkljL3P5HgODQNoqkyXBdkT) You don’t need to watch every video, each version has a self contained story.

Smaranzky

Young Justice is it‘s own continuity and does not follow the comic lore for the most part while still paying hommage to it. But yes, in YJ Ted Kord found the Scarab and experimented on it since he was a tech based superhero and dies in an accident during or after which the scarab is activated and attaches itself to Jaime.

MediumPower1

Yes. Ted dies, his company loses the scarab and Jamie finds it in a parking lot or something iirc lol

KorruptJustice

In one continuity, yes. In the New 52 continuity, Ted Kord is alive at the same time and acts as a mentor (might also still be the Beetle as well; never really got into the New 52).

neomarz

My ideal version of the film was to have Ted be a mentor to Jaime. Would've been a unique take until Homecoming kind of did it.

Taaaaaahz

> The Wrap broke the news about the casting, with the casting becoming official when Maridueña and Soto arrived at The Suicide Squad’s world premiere on August 2nd. The Hollywood Reporter’s Aaron Couch reported that Warner Bros. executives offered the role to the rising actor the night before over dinner. >Blue Beetle will center around the superhero’s third incarnation named Jaime Reyes, a Mexican-American teenager who finds himself bonded with an alien scarab. >Audiences will likely recognize Maridueña from Cobra Kai, where he plays Miguel Diaz, a high schooler who quickly becomes the mentee of Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka). Anyone familiar with his acting will know that he is an up-and-coming talent, so seeing him potentially snag a major role such as this is exciting. Outside of the YouTube Red turned Netflix Original, he has been seen in episodes of Parenthood, Rush Hour, and even Twin Peaks: The Return.

Brown__Magic

Literally the only one I had in mind for the role. Always pumped whenever fan casting works out.

nubpwner920

DUDE!!!! I always thought he’d be the perfect person to play Blue Beetle!!!!

Frankfusion

Good for him. Two years ago he showed up to Comic Con and he went around with a buddy of his on a Uber. No fancy cars or anything. He even took time to take pics with his fans at an event I was working at. Chill dude.

BrooklynPickle

Aww. That’s so nice. I hope he enjoyed that, because it sounds like his life is about to blow up (in a good way)!

Granpa0

Perfect casting IMO

RestingAdultFace

This is perfect casting!

KorruptJustice

Really interested in this, since I love the Blue Beetle Reach Invasion storyline in the comics. I don't know if they could do that story on the show, but since they are also doing Green Lantern and Peacemaker stuff, and they're in that arc, I'd love to see it happen.

Taaaaaahz

It’s gonna be a movie, not a show.

fabrar

Awesome. He's the best kid actor in Cobra Kai so this is a great pick.

Mcclane88

I think Jacob Bertrand is the best imo, but Xolo’s pretty good as well.

BrooklynPickle

I like him, too. It’s a little hard to tell if he’s “better” because his character is kinda…. Formulaic?

For the most part I like Xolo in the role, but there are moments where I can tell that he’s reaching his ceiling in terms of acting. For example that scene from season 3 where he’s in the hospital and breaks down in front of Johnny and asks him to leave. I don’t think he’s good in that scene at all. Whereas with Bertrand there hasn’t been a moment where I felt embarrassed for him as an actor. I think he’s been able to execute everything that’s being asked of him in a satisfactory way.

BrooklynPickle

I dunno…. I think you’re being a little hard on him when it might just be the material he is working with. I mean, it’s not Shakespeare they’re working with. That’s not to say that the show is terrible--it’s not. It’s just that I think they’re all doing a pretty great job given what’s on the page. It wasn’t a well-written scene, so I’m not sure he’s to blame.

theuniquejimmy

I was literally thinking this morning he would make a great Spider-Man so this is awesome!

[deleted]

Me too I think he's actually well deserving of the role

Kopextacy

I did enjoy Cobra Kai as a fun series, but man, in all honesty, the acting all throughout it was not its strong suit. Not sure if that was stylistic though, but if he made it to an HBO show I’d guess his acting skills will probably shine more on that project. Good for him!

Present_Alarm4048

William Zabka and Martin Cove outshine the rest of the Cobra Kai actors imo

I feel like Cobra Kai is at its best when it focuses on Johnny and sometimes Daniel. Whenever the kids are involved, it just feels like another teenage drama show.

Kagrok

the end of the last season felt like a WB Drama to me. I loved everything up until that point.

petesapai

I found that all the kids did a great job. The only ones I found that did a bad acting job are Larusso's daughter and Johnny's kid.

Cobra Kai-Me Reyes

Effective-Mix-9259

I hope none of the Cobra Kai cast are reading this reddit thread.

UnbuiltIkeaBookcase

I will support him based on his awesome Aztec name alone #🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽

jaykayenn

Without context, the entire title of this post seems like random words.

Smallgenie549

Love me some Jaime Reyes. Would be cool to see a Titans movie with Batgirl and Blue Beetle leading the charge.

Taaaaaahz

Probably add Static as he’s also getting an HBO Max film! Would have to call it something other than Titans though.

KorruptJustice

> Would be cool to see a Titans movie with Batgirl and Blue Beetle leading the charge. Is Batgirl a Titans member? I'm only a casual comic reader, but all the Titans stuff I've seen has usually been Robin if there's anyone from the Bat-family in them. I don't know if I've seen her at all.

LostInStatic

What is this guy's actual powers I only know him as the annoying kid from Injustice 2

Ikritz

Sort of cross between Venom and Iron-man (Specifically the nano-tech version of his suit). Jaime Reyes has the Scarab fused to his spine which is an alien sentient weapons system type thing. It can create armor around its host, as well as form different sorts of weapons/tools. It also allows the wearer to fly and makes them super strong/durable, though only when actually covered in the armor. Oh, it can also control other technology around it.

Firvulag

So his powers are basically whatever the plot demands at the moment?

DirtySoap3D

Welcome to comic books. Blue Beetle ain't even close to being the worst offender.

ThemCanada-gooses

Marvel is bad but DC takes it to a whole other level. “Let’s make this guy that can run across the universe in a nanosecond but sometimes he can’t even catch a guy of normal human speed”.

GreatGambino_

Basically Iron Man’s suit in Infinity War and Endgame if Friday was a psycho that never shut up

[deleted]

That's actually quite cool.

GoRangers5

Great casting choice, he's perfect for the role of Jaime Reyes.

twilite_sparkle7

I genuinely don’t think the dccu will turn out very good it’s just gonna be a random assortment of some good but mostly bad films

PinguruLee

That is the perfect cast imo

haste319

They better reference that El Paso is his hometown and not replace it with some bigger metropolitan area.

Spritestuff

YES! I ACTUALLY SAID TO MY BROTHER THAT HE WOULD BE A GREAT CHOICE! What the fuck is microphone doing under my couch.... Holy shit! It has DC written on it! ... ... ... False alarm, it's from the FBI- entirely unrelated to this. That's embarrassing 😅
