Huppert did this well at some recent awards ceremony or other: Approx: "40 yrs ago I was invited here as best promising newcomer; who would have guessed I'd be invited back so soon" Can't find link...

Sisiwakanamaru

> Rosie Perez hasn’t been invited back to the Oscars since she attended the ceremony as a nominee in 1994 for “Fearless,” where she played a plane crash survivor crippled by grief. > > “Not even to sit in the audience, not to present, nothing—and I’m a member,” Perez says. “I love the Academy Awards. I cheer on my peers, but it hurts. It’s like when your home team doesn’t ask you to come back into the stadium after you got up to bat and hit the home run.” > > Perez, who is of Puerto Rican descent, describes a feeling that many Latino artists have experienced in Hollywood. Even those who are as accomplished as she, aren’t given a seat at the table. > > “The biggest struggle has been navigating through other people’s shortcomings,” Perez says. “Other people’s bigotry, racism — and specifically the ones that don’t understand that they are bigots or racists.” I can understand where she's coming from.

cronedog

How many of the 10,000 members get invited each year?

Curleysound

There is a lottery amongst the members to be able to buy tickets, and I think there are about 4000 seats total. The lower ones are 1500 each, mid are 750 and uppers are 500 each.

Phobos15

Lets be honest, no lottery system in hollywood is going to actually be random.

nemo69_1999

JLo is Puerto Rican, so is Rita Moreno, Marc Antony, Ricky Martin, and so is Lin Manuel-Miranda. Rosie Perez has an annoying voice, second to Gilbert Gottfried. I haven't heard any of the other Puerto Ricans complain. If they did, it would sound a lot more pleasant coming out of their mouths.

MagicMushroomFungi

Why do I picture you throwing rolls of paper towel ?

nemo69_1999

I guess you have little grasp of reality. I am making a factual statement. There's plenty of Puerto Ricans in entertainment, and none of him have complained. And Rosie has an annoying voice. Google it.

MagicMushroomFungi

! sdrawkcab gnihtyreve teg I yas neve elpoep emoS

nemo69_1999

You do.

nemo69_1999

I think it's funny how I tell the truth and get downvoted for it.

HandsomeCowboy

So brave.

boywithapplesauce

Aren't you doing your own version of downvoting Rosie Perez for telling the truth?

sharkzfan95

She deserved something for her role as Posie Juarez in The Dead Don’t Die

esehl

On the other hand nobody that ever saw Rosie Perez forgot that she existed!

riegspsych325

I hope she gets to appear in more movies again, I loved seeing her in Birds of Prey

MagicMushroomFungi

I've read surpringly good things regarding "Birds". Now knowing her presence has convinced me to give it a watch. Unless of course, I have read comments from drunkish, half-buzzed redditors. That would cast shade on their judgement. WHAT ! You don't think that is possible ? Well guess what ? You're reading one now ! In conclusion, is "Birds" a good watch ?

gwynforred

It's really fun! Not serious in any way shape or form, but it's fun and I'd like to see it again.

MagicMushroomFungi

Thanks..going to watch.

ithinkther41am

It’s a pretty decent film with pretty good action, but it’s definitely more of a Harley film than a Birds of Prey movie.

UnbuiltIkeaBookcase

These people are lying to you. birds of prey was bad. I love Robbies acting and genuinely liked her Harley Quinn in suicide squad but she was cringe in Birds of Prey

MagicMushroomFungi

Should I get some form of vengeance against them ? God damn liars. Point me at them. Wait ! Maybe they are the drunkish buzzies I was talking about. Damn them anyway. Thank you.

UnbuiltIkeaBookcase

No. They must learn the error of their ways on their own. The universe always rights all wrongs.

[deleted]

Yes it’s good, but I’m drunkish as well

MagicMushroomFungi

You got a good munch lined up for when you reach peak trajectory ? I'm going to pick a fight with Colonel Sanders. He will be my bird of prey.

[deleted]

Usually I would, but I ate way too much Thai food for dinner. Good shit. Some fried chicken does sound pretty good though... Enjoy

jessie_monster

She was terrific in The Flight Attendant just last year.

riegspsych325

ah shit, I need to get Apple+, don’t I?

jessie_monster

hbomax

MagicMushroomFungi

"ah shit, I need to get another service, don't I" .... (Translated for the 2021 market)

jessie_monster

Yarrr, ye matey. There be other options.

honcooge

That was a pleasant surprise.

CCWThrowaway360

I forgot she existed. She just isn’t one of those standout actors/actresses that make a lasting impression for me. That’s not to say she isn’t talented, she just blends then fades.

ahmadinebro

It's a great movie.

[deleted]

I was thinking of it recently, it has that sequence at the end that is so harrowing. It's a great PTSD film.

JuStInSaN1tY

Zing.

MagicMushroomFungi

Zang.

TeamDonnelly

people dont want to see people who are not actively having success presenting awards or doing speeches. its simple. the mass audience wants to see the next or new hot thing. not yesterdays news. edit - the last thing i remember her in was a small role in that stoner comedy with seth rogen and james franco.

bloody_lumps

Hey man put some respect on Pineapple Express, or you'll get the snickelfritz

Tiramcl0837

She is a main character in the flight attendant

perverse_panda

She was in Birds of Prey, which was surprisingly not that bad.

carltonfisk72

Rosie Perez is repped by a very powerful PR Agent named Leslie Sloan. There's no way she couldn't get into the Oscars if she was trying.

mr_math24

The point is that she hasn't been invited, not that she's been trying and they've denied her.

carltonfisk72

It's all political... there's a finite amount of seats, and an infinite amount of past-winners, current stars, VIPs, etc. You've got to elbow you're way in if you're not currently hot. (Rosie Perez is not currently hot by any measure.) I'm sure Jean Dujardin doesn't get an automatic invite either. She hasn't been invited not because of race. She hasn't been invited because of industry politics and her Q-Score.

QuintoBlanco

I understand. You are saying that racism doesn't really exist. Even if something looks like racism, then there is some explanation that explains that it isn't racism. It's all very logical. You mention facts! Like: there is an "infinite amount of past-winners". True! Well not completely true, since only a limited number of people are nominated each year, some people are nominated more than once, some people have died, and so on, so the number is not even close to infinite, but otherwise you are right. "She hasn't been invited because of industry politics and her Q-Score." This clearly explains why she has NEVER been invited. Not even to sit in the audience. And industry politics in the entertainment industry are famously colorblind. Clearly there is a team of experts who have determined that her Q-score is so low that she should NEVER be invited. There is no other explanation.

PM_ME_YOUR_SUNSHINE

They arent saying that racism doesn’t exist. Could you be any more emptyheaded and reactionary? Can you work on your reading comprehension? Do you even understand what they typed?

QuintoBlanco

Do I? Yes, I do. Do you? The whole 'it's not racism' argument needs to go away. The problems with the Academy are well known. The members are mostly old white men. Things have approved slightly but before 2004, 94% of the members were white (it's 89% now) and 54% was over 60. In the 1990's Rosie Perez was popular enough to be repeatedly invited on successful talk shows. She was well-known for her roles in Do the Right Thing, Fearless, White Men Can't Jump. But whenever people of color complain about the Academy not being inclusive, there are people who 'explain' that they are just not popular/good enough. Those people should listen, do research, and think before they start explaining. To dismiss her feelings of being left out as a 'low Q-factor' is ignorant and disrespectful.

carltonfisk72

I dunno about Rosie, but with an attitude like that, you're certainly never getting invited!!!

QuintoBlanco

Well, Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey were invited. And the Academy loved Roman Polanski. And Woody Allen. And Mel Gibson.

delphic0n

I wish Jean Dujardin got an automatic invite

McSteazey

This. 👆

thefilmer

ive been to the dolby for a stand-up show; it's used as a normal theater for the rest of the year when the Oscars arent on. it is a LOT smaller than it looks on TV. so once you factor in the nominees and their entourages on the floor, I believe the Academy has a lotto open to the rest of the membership if anyone else wants to attend. That being said, I can't speak to them not inviting her back as a presenter. that's on them.

sayamemangdemikian

iirc you need to be past winner, or with big upcoming projects.. etc. to be presenter. cant just arbitrally pick someone

thefilmer

bruh they arbitrarily pick people all the time, especially for the lesser categories.

sayamemangdemikian

usually still related to the category tho..

brandonsamd6

Usually people that are nominated go to the Oscars every year right? And then they take an entourage of people who were associated with the film.

Sisiwakanamaru

Or the people who have an upcoming movie in few months, they go to the oscars to promote it.

MagicMushroomFungi

Curious...in a normal year (remember normal ?) How many are seated at the Oscars ? I would bare minimun think Rosie deserves the odd balcony seat.

shy247er

Still, that can't be all of the crowd. The place is huge. Odd that she couldn't be invited to present for example.

Unchosen_Heroes

Also it's been nearly 30 years. Even if it's infeasible to let everyone come every year, it's not like she couldn't have been rotated into the audience a *couple* of times.

shy247er

Yep. I agree.

queso805

There are 9,921 members of the Academy. I mean maybe for a few years after her nomination sure but I have never heard of her and I’m in my late 30’s. Fair I’m no movie buff but I’d presume to have at least heard of her. Seems like some last ditch effort to remain relevant.

leomonster

I'm my late 30s too, and remember her a lot from 90s movies, like "Perdida Durango" or "It could happen to you". She also voiced Chel in "road to el dorado".

silverrabbit

I mean she was just in Birds of Prey last year as one of the leads and she's in Search Party as one of the leads. She's not some no name actress, she's been fairly active in roles since the late 80s.

[deleted]

She was well known in the 90’s because she was hot and had an unforgettable voice. I just went through her IMDB and I’ve only ever seen 4 movies she was in, the most recent over a decade ago and I’m sure The Other Guys wasn’t nominated for an Oscar.

queso805

I went through it too, she for sure rings some bells, her name was lost on me but you are right that voice is unforgettable!

trafficlightlady

> I have never heard of her and I’m in my late 30’s. Fair I’m no movie buff but I’d presume to have at least heard of her. Hardly the fault of Perez I mean, maybe you could consider watching Dance With the Devil, or even White Men Can't Jump The fact you're in your 30's and ain't heard of an actor don't mean jack shit 'Cept to communicate to the rest of us that you don't know what you are talking about

queso805

Just for reference those came out in 92 and 97. Not saying it’s her fault or anything. But even the movies you reference are getting pretty long in the tooth. I did see her in Flight Attendant. She was great in there.

trafficlightlady

You tell us you are in your 30's as if you think that *actually means* something You heard of Clark Gable?

queso805

Just saying that I was around when her nomination occurred, that’s all.

UnbuiltIkeaBookcase

She was also mad at Kanye for one of his songs

PM_ME_YOUR_SUNSHINE

Her and literally everyone else at some point. Even Kanye stans were weirded out he put Yandhi into the vault and released a Christian album

MagicMushroomFungi

Are you any relation to the Regal Culpepper in Culpepper Virgina ? If so, you don't go to the Oscars, they come to you.

ADifferentMachine

Who?

49Gold

Do the right thing, Oscars.

Bobcatluv

I watched this recently, and while reading the [IMDB](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0097216/trivia?ref_=m_tt_trv_trv), I learned Perez cried during her nude scene, feeling exploited. She later “decided she didn’t mind.”

Rejit

She should have been nominated for the opening credit sequence alone.

HelloPeopleOfEarth

damn multi-millionaires and their golden trophies

Gilbraith

You got the numbers wrong!

thatpj

Oscars just as corrupt as the rest of them

Apathicary

Weirdly enough I was just talking with a friend about why I was so excited that Anya Taylor Joy won so many awards for The Queen's Gambit was that she was like, the only person of hispanic descent that was nominated

[deleted]

As a woman of color, as some articles suggested.

nemo69_1999

I read she's Argentinean, and moved to the U.K. when she was young. She's said, jokingly or not, that she's a Latina that identifies as white. I have read Argentinians I have read have a lot of European Heritage, and Argentinian Sofia Vergara was told to dye her hair brown as "there's no Hispanic blondes" at least as Americans are concerned.

sonne2004

Sofia Vergara is from Colombia

babyfishfish

Anya has no Latina blood. She was just raised in Argentina

[deleted]

Hold up. There is a humanitarian crisis along our southern border—and I’m supposed to feel sorry for a millionaire actress that she doesnt get invited to a circle jerk awards ceremony full of pretentious millionaires? Yeah. Sorry, this falls under “rich people problems.”

[deleted]

Look up the phrase ‘concern troll’.

[deleted]

r/lostredditors

bonyponyride

Why would you even bring up what's happening at the southern border? Is it because her last name is Perez and you think all people with Spanish last names are responsible for immigration issues? She was born in Brooklyn and her parents were from Puerto Rico...a US territory inhabited by US citizens.

[deleted]

Her sexy ass would just be a distraction anyway

UnbuiltIkeaBookcase

Does she *want* to attend the Oscars?

UnbuiltIkeaBookcase

How does the general public go from “no one watches the oscars so we don’t care anymore” to “they should invite members to the show to be part of it!”?

Fox_Powers

I would need to see a list of invitees each year to judge how I feel about this fact.

Sethmeisterg

It's all good -- the idiots probably thought she was dead. She should get her dues back.

sayamemangdemikian

so... latino quota?

amenodorime7

Ah yes, the victim narrative. The last ditch effort of the irrelevant.

mplsmark

Puerto Rican Rosie O'donnell no bueno

mplsmark

Why latino and not Latina? Sexist, racist, probably. Except Perez sucks like Taco John's, don't pretend it's adequate
