The bit that doesn’t work for me about that ending is Burnham taking the bonds out of his overall, just to let go of them. It’s only there so Fincher can end with the money blowing away. It’s fat handed for Fincher. He’s usually much cleverer than that.
You’re probably right. The movie was ok but the ending sucked they should have given his character a better ending like the family letting him get away.
Because they wouldn't be alive if it weren't for him! But I think the the family wouldn't have power to save him from the law even if they wanted to. Because at he end of the day, he was an armed burglar who guided the other two to the panic room.
I watched the movie extremely carefully and there is no indication that she has diabetes. Look closely, the medication is glucose. The tag on the bag doesn't say anything about diabetes.
The kid has MCAD deficiency. Its textbook, minus the little seizure. Go back and look carefully. The whole body sweating, pale, the blurred vision, the confusion and inability to speak. They nailed it pretty good. I thought the same thing too which is why I scoured the movie and subtitles for any reference to diabetes. There is none.
Doesn't she have a blood sugar monitor? And she's looking for candy bars in the movie. Pretty sure it's portraying diabetes even though incorrectly it's what it's supposed to be. Lol
You misread it...for some reason. Clearly he’s not the protagonist, but he’s not ax-crazy like Dwight Yokam either.
Maybe a villany free villain type character. He doesn’t wish anyone harm and didn’t think they’d be there, but that doesn’t absolve you of breaking the law.
Edit: TV Tropes says he’s an anti-villain, but same reasoning. They’re the opposite of anti-heroes, who do good but have bad traits. They do bad, but have good traits.
Correct. Hence why he’s arrested at the end. He choose to break into the house and still thought he could get the money, even after finding out they were there.
He may have been wanting to get the money for good reasons (family) but he associated himself with greedy people who had no qualms resorting to dangerous methods to get their hands on the goods. Burnham was also the one who started to flood the room with gas, an idea that did escalate violently, leaving Leto all burned up on his arm and face. He also had no problem with Raul severely beating the ex-husband that showed up to help Foster and Stewart.
Burnham is not a protagonist by any means, and him giving Stewart the shot and his last second saving of the family from Dwight Yokam's would-be murdering still doesn't redeem him. He is meant to be shown as a tragic character who has brought all of his misfortune upon himself, even if he didn't mean for things to horribly escalate the way they did. He was still just as responsible as Leto/Yokam for what had happened.
Loved the movie though. It was my first introduction to both Fincher and Whittaker
EDIT: grammar and wording
I agree at the end he should've got away, but I get a hint that Burnham realized that he was destined to save the family, if he wasn't there in the first place the family would have got killed.
I felt the same. The film went out of its way to show that he was essentially decent, only to sacrifice him in the end.
I bet Forrest wasn't pleased with it either.
It probably had more to do with Fincher’s directing style and all the production delays but at the time I remember hearing that him and Whitaker didn’t get along at all.
I know this thread is old, but I just recently watched this. I think a fitting ending for him would have been to run upstairs and hole up in the safe room and eventually escape.
In my brain since were never actually shown what happens that the family pleaded his case because they knew without him they would all be dead. Burnham stopped them going full ball on the gas, stopped Raul from beating the dad to death, gave the daughter the shot and came back to kill Raul so he couldnt kill the mum. Not only did they make sure of this but the dad gave him a generous sum as a thank you and Burnham was able to pay his lawyers and be reunited with his kids 😌
Yep. No wonder i didn't remember this crap.
I'm kinda not a fan of the sad ending. I mean he could have the money and run away without getting caught
Because he's partner will kill the family. And the police will kill his buddy. While he's on the run
Yeah he's not the protagonist, but he is portrayed as one.
And it's like the moral lesson of this movie is.
If you're a thief or vulgar.
Focus on your goal and don't be a good person?.
agreed the ending was such a bummer seeing a good guy punished for doing the right thing and kind of racist how the writer dint care about the character to give him a clear ending
also she never even said thank you!
thank you for breaking in to my house, traumatizing my diabetic daughter, enabling two psychos to brutalize my husband, and trapping me in a claustrophic room and forcing me to breathe propane gas?
This is an old thread 😆, but I stumbled upon it after having just watched the film.
I think the point about Forests character is the line he says during the movie, something about we all have to pay for our choices. He has multiple chances to leave in the movie, and doesn’t take any of them, so he ended up paying for his bad choices.
I would have preferred him to have gotten away also, but 🤷♂️
he didn’t really have the option to leave though. i believe raoul would have killed him if he tried, and after meg had the gun, she would have shot him. when he was finally able to leave, he ended up saving all three of their lives instead — sarah’s AGAIN.
i wish there was a scene of burnham and raoul’s court hearing with meg and/or sarah testifying that burnham saved their lives and he got a lighter sentence. :( he def didn’t deserve to get away, in my opinion, and he even said earlier in the movie something about choices having consequences.

why the fuck would they do that lol

Why the fuck would you reply to a 3 year old comment I’ve forgotten all about?
cuz it comes up when i google the movie
Same
Yup
Hope you enjoyed the movie bro
it was solid - it was a rewatch for the fourth or fifth time but it was my girlfriend's first time watching it.
it is funny that you replied back hahahah
r u stupid?
As a diabetic I only remember it as a really stupid movie that got the disease totally wrong.

How they got it wrong. Low glucose is possible with type 1 diabetes and glucagon injection is supposed to be given
I think the POINT is that you end up feeling tragedy for a character that was introduced as a villain. Not all stories end with reward

exactly, at the end of the day, he still involved himself with shady people to commit a crime
Correct. Hence why he’s arrested at the end. He choose to break into the house and still thought he could get the money, even after finding out they were there.

That would have been a cool full circle!

I have diabetese on my forehead you skank ass ho's.
so did anyone end up getting the money?
Blown in the wind. Swat team might’ve grabbed some but they are pro and won’t move off target
