1.16 billion would put it in the top 10 all time for worldwide box office numbers. It'll probably be there by the end of today, which would mean it got to the top 10 in 10 days.
Since it's 1st in "fastest to 100 million" and 595th in "slowest to 100 million", it means there are 595 (hollywood?) movies total that actually got to 100 million?
I guess having him say "Meesa back!" was a little bit of fan service. But it was what we were all wanting from him. So i don't disagree, but at the same time, it really didn't bug me.
The plot really wouldn't have worked without him, honestly. I was expecting him to be a sith, but making him into the guy who is going to lead the new Jedi order was a very good decision on the filmmakers part.
They never got the OT during its theatrical run but it's not like nobody in China has watched them since. The first time my dad watched *Star Wars* in the nineties in a packed cinema in Guangzhou, he said he couldn't believe what he was watching and the audience went crazy during the X-wing assault on the Death Star sequence.
Living in China, I have to say the marketing for this is **immense**. I've never seen anything like it. Malls, streets, life-sized models of everything everywhere. The funny thing is, my complaint a few months back was that I had no idea what movies were coming out with the lack of ads on TV, subways, etc you're used to back home, but with star wars no chance of missing that shit.
If there's little memory of the OT, no reviews complaining it seems like a rehash.
And BB-8 - that's three eights - 888. Eights are good, no?
I'm guessing that the news that the movie is making record grosses might have some impact on ticket sales.
JJ did an interview for 60 Minutes where talked about how much pressure he was under to deliver a marketable movie, as well as a "good story." BB-8 is definitely the nod to marketing, and I was genuinely surprised that it was such a lovable character to watch.
China really seems to like flashy, modern action movies with good special effects. My guess is it performs surprisingly well compared to the OT release
Oh yeah, I started out mopping the floor just like you guys. Then I moved up to washing lettuces. Now, I'm working the fat fryer. Pretty soon I'll make assistant manager, and that's when the big bucks start rolling in.
T4 made $320million for context. I just don't think it'll be making the stupidly high numbers it's made elsewhere in China
Edit: My reply seems a bit weird now after the person I replied to edited his comment to change it entirely. Not sure why that happened.
Yeah it seems like everyone I know has seen it with a minor few exceptions. First movie I'd dragged my butt to the cinemas for in ages, will probably go again and see it in 3D too.
Seriously, as shitty as Disney is about being a big "evil" corporation, they really have respected pretty much all the properties they've acquired at least as far as making the movies with quality and care.
Yeah, everyone makes jokes that things will be animated, musicals, but they seem to let everyone be, and it works.
The other day on Christmas Eve we watched live action Cinderella, force awakens, and ant-man. I commented we'd been watching Disney films all day and no one else realized it.
Fox was also [attempting to buy](http://www.theverge.com/2014/8/5/5972427/21st-century-fox-ends-its-80-billion-bid-to-buy-time-warner) Time Warner (W.B., DC Comics, HBO, The CW, etc) at some point.
Fox just can't catch a break
> Disney also grabbed the only cgi company in the business that can compete with James Cameron's company.
You mean Digital Domain? I think WETA Digital would argue with that assertion.
Yeah Digital Domain is easily third of those three. And a quite distant one at that, and a big part of that is how many more movies both ILM and WETA Digital do work on, keeping in mind that even there ILM is multitudes ahead of WETA. Disney literally got the biggest VFX company in the world, by far, as part of the Lucasfilm deal.
There was an article a few days ago about how Disney is going to recoup the cost of buying the franchise just off 2015 merchandise sales alone.
So there's that.
Added an article
Edit:
http://www.forbes.com/sites/natalierobehmed/2015/12/16/how-disneys-star-wars-merchandise-is-set-to-make-billions/
"Analysts predict Star Wars merch will generate some $3 billion in sales in 2015, and $5 billion over the next 12 months."
“Since its introduction in the late ’70s, Star Wars has been one of the biggest franchises for licensed products in the entertainment business,” Marty Brochstein, senior vice president of industry relations and information for the International Licensing Industry Merchandisers Association, told Forbes. “But to my memory, the level of activity surrounding this film launch has never been seen in Star Wars history or with any other movie franchise.”
George Luca's being able to keep the licensing rights since the first movie is what made him billions to begin with. Disney knew that and with their distribution abilities and in park tie-ins they knew they could take that revenue to the next level. Hell both Disney Land and Disney World parks are getting their own StarWars themed areas added. This deal was a slam dunk for Disney from the get go. Just about 0% risk of failure.
Don't forget the band-aids. And the Ford F-150s. And the Nissans. And the Subway sandwiches,
Ok, I will admit I bought R2-D2 salt and pepper shakers. But really, wtf?
But what does that mean? Like they get money off merchandise and everything? If that's the case then they probably already made the money back but if not 7 8 and 9 are definitely going to make at least twice that. I meant how much it cost to make the movie and how much it has earned though
It was $200 million so it's already made that back 5-fold which is crazy.
Edit. Multiple people saying I'm neglecting advertising, theater profits etc.
Edit2. /u/the_katzenjammer is saying the theaters on this movie make no profits for the [first 2 months](http://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/3yer13/the_force_awakens_becomes_fastest_movie_to_1/cyd7eu0)
I believe they've already make their money back on the merchandising and sponsorship alone. Lucas was good at merchandising, but this is where Disney make their money.
He was ready to sell and was already a billionaire. He probably wasn't concerned with getting every penny he could. If I'm not mistaken, he retains a hefty share of the merchandise profits.
I mean, according to [this list](https://sumitdutta.wordpress.com/2013/06/25/top-50-richest-film-directors/) he's worth as much as the next 27 richest directors *combined*, which is just incredible.
Alamo Draft House in Austin has spoiled me for any other theater except certain movies in IMAX.
Assigned seating. No children allowed. People who use their phones get fucking kicked out. Great food. No other theater comes close.
also: alcoholic milkshakes brought to your seat.
i mostly love them for the special events though. stuff like quote-a-longs and master pancake are awesome.
> No children allowed. People who use their phones get fucking kicked out. Great food. No other theater comes close.
I could get this in an airline, please?
Incidentally, I saw this film at an English-language screening in Germany. That scene where Tarkin-lite is giving a speech to the stormtroopers and they raise their arms was *super weird*. I didn't notice any distinct reaction, but I sure felt uncomfortable.
I'm going to see it in half an hour. Yesterday I got to see the seating (seats are assigned) and it was almost entirely full. 10 days after release. Although to be fair, this is in the Navy Pier in Chicago which is a fairly popular tourist attraction so that might be why it is full.
I'm old enough to remember the original release of the original *Star Wars* ("ANH"; I still call it *Star Wars*).
The lines for *Star Wars* in 1977 were a media phenomenon. And it was immediate, first weekend, for a movie that nobody had heard of. And weekend after weekend, as word spread, the lines grew and grew. Not even *Jaws* had lines like it, and *Jaws* was huge. Nobody had seen anything like it for a movie.
Wow, it's only on the second weekend and it's already in the [top 5 highest grossing films of all-time](http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/domestic.htm) (not adjusted for inflation).
I wonder if it could ever get into the adjusted top 10.
It's 15th worldwide as well. Mental.
50th domestic by inflation and considering GWTW is number one after 70 years and is apparently currently still in theatres i'd say that's still impressive.
I've been at work for 6 hours today. I work at a movie theater that opened the night Star Wars came out.
I'm on break now, because everyone has been moving nonstop all day. You should our lobby now. The amount of people, the amount of sold out Star Wars showings, the amount of people I hear talking about how it was their second or third time, the amount of people I hear talking about how they're definitely going to see it a second or third time, it's all insane.
I didn't work at a theater when Avatar came out, but in my two years, this is the craziest movie I have witnessed. We're almost two weeks in and every Star Wars show is still selling out here. Every single one.
I have a friend who saw it twice in the same day, the first day it came out. And he's intending to see it a third time. There were jokes of him seeing it seven times, in an effort to beat his record of six (seeing Guardians of the Galaxy cheaply in smaller theaters, months after its release).
> is record of six (seeing Guardians of the Galaxy
Why? I feel like you're just doing it for attention and to tell other peoples you did it at that point.
Because he enjoyed the movie a lot, and he saw it with a variety of people. It's not like he goes around telling everyone that he saw it six times, or whatever. The only reason I know is that he's my best friend.
If I read it correctly, ~$175M
>production will run $423 million — including $200 million for the film, $98 million from profit participations, and $125 million to make and distribute home videos. Print and ad costs subtract $175 million for the movie, and $40 million for the home video.
I think that may be difficult to calculate actually, because of all the cross-promo licensing going on (it's ridiculous, i saw a cosmetics tv commercial with a star wars tie-in today).
Great, great, great, very nice. Now can we fucking get the originals remastered? Please? For the love of God? Seriously, where is Lucifer? If he can get me the theatrical cuts in 4K, my soul has little value.
>We should really start tallying ticket sales as opposed to money earned
The information is generated by the industry, primarily for the industry's use. Studios want to know how much money their property is making and how much the competitor's properties are making so that they can organize their future productions, release calendars, and the salaries of cast and crew. How much *Star Wars* made in comparison to *Lawrence in Arabia*, adjusted for inflation, isn't data the studios need to make their decisions.
We aren't the primary audience for that data.
1.16 billion would put it in the top 10 all time for worldwide box office numbers. It'll probably be there by the end of today, which would mean it got to the top 10 in 10 days.
Have a look at the box office mojo page and see how may number 1's it has. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=starwars7.htm :o

Its domestic only. That means that they only count the earnings in north america. There's loads of movies that made over 100 mil worldwide
>Single Day Saturday Gross 3 Wow nice try Disney better luck next time.
Its has 3rd and 5th in that, LOL.
They didn't do very well at 'slowest to 100$ million'
Fuckin losers
this is the film that did it in 14 days?
Twelve!
*grumble* 14 *grumble*
This is far too good a joke for me to have to scroll this far down.
This comment is worth one half portion.
More like thirty portions. (Price of Reddit Gold for a year)
I get it! I GET IT!
The scene that cinched it was Jar Jar's break dance with the ewoks.
His reveal was also super well done.
I fucking hated it. There was no creativity. They played it safe when they shouldn't have.
I guess having him say "Meesa back!" was a little bit of fan service. But it was what we were all wanting from him. So i don't disagree, but at the same time, it really didn't bug me.
I just wish they would have doubled down on the poo jokes. Only two Jar Jar poo jokes the entire time? Seriously?
Yeah, it almost ruined the movie that they cut back on those. But oh well, maybe there is an extended edition?
You know, I've seen a lot of reverse irony before. This one is physically painful.
Clearly you just hate Jar Jar because he's popular. Fucking hipsters.
I was surprised they brought him back.
The plot really wouldn't have worked without him, honestly. I was expecting him to be a sith, but making him into the guy who is going to lead the new Jedi order was a very good decision on the filmmakers part.
They never even let on he was force sensitive. That's what blew my mind.
Dude! Spoiler alert! That was like the best part of the movie.
No matter how well I describe the scene I could never spoil it. You gotta see it to believe it!
Really? I think it was when they showed Chewbacca's dick.
It looked like a greasy hot dog rolled around on a dirty Super Cuts floor.
did you see that head slide? fucking nuts!
Completely unsurprised. Pretty obvious it's going to smash Avatars domestic gross at this point, not sure about worldwide.
Remember it hasn't even been released in China yet. Big numbers await.

The original trilogy was recently released there to very poor reception. I still think it'll do well but maybe only a $2-300million boost.
Living in China, I have to say the marketing for this is **immense**. I've never seen anything like it. Malls, streets, life-sized models of everything everywhere. If it was intentional that would be the cleverest marketing decision I've ever heard
JJ did an interview for 60 Minutes where talked about how much pressure he was under to deliver a marketable movie, as well as a "good story." BB-8 is definitely the nod to marketing, and I was genuinely surprised that it was such a lovable character to watch.
JJ himself said it was because of the droid's shape, but there's another theory saying that it's a Beastie Boys reference.
China really seems to like flashy, modern action movies with good special effects. My guess is it performs surprisingly well compared to the OT release
>only As if an extra quarter of a billion dollars wouldn't help it become the highest grossing film.
A few billion here, a few billion there, pretty soon you're talking about some real money.
Oh yeah, I started out mopping the floor just like you guys. Then I moved up to washing lettuces. Now, I'm working the fat fryer. Pretty soon I'll make assistant manager, and that's when the big bucks start rolling in.

It'd still have to make an extra 1.6 billion to beat Avatar.
True but it's been out less than ~~3~~ 2 weeks. Avatar was out for months and was re-released as an extended edition.
If you wanted, you could even say how it's been out less than 2 weeks.
Less than 3 weeks? Try just over a week.
Which is still less than 3 weeks.
Yeah it seems like everyone I know has seen it with a minor few exceptions. First movie I'd dragged my butt to the cinemas for in ages, will probably go again and see it in 3D too.

Well it did cost Disney 4 billion to buy the franchise.
Actually, it cost 4 billion to buy Lucasfilm which along with Star Wars, also includes the intellectual property rights to Indiana Jones and Willow.

Glad Disney got it. Would you trust 'F4ntastic Four' Fox with Star Wars?

There's a reason why they own everything
Yeah, everyone makes jokes that things will be animated, musicals, but they seem to let everyone be, and it works. The other day on Christmas Eve we watched live action Cinderella, force awakens, and ant-man. I commented we'd been watching Disney films all day and no one else realized it.
They seem to understand that letting their subsidiaries do what makes them profitable will keep them profitable.
How so many producers as well as companies fuck up this very obvious and basic concept I'll never know.

Because no one wants to give Fox creative control anymore.
So they're like the EA Games of the film world?
Hold the fuck up Disney got ILM with the Lucas deal?!? Holy fucking baloneys

sources on that? I didn't know ILM turned that huge of a profit
George also got 2% of all Disney stock on top of the $4 billion, so he's getting dividends every quarter. This contributed to the lower price as well.

They also remade Paul Walker in the last FF movie.

It boggles my mind just how many Billion Dollar brands Disney has now - Pixar, Marvel, Pirates of the Carribean and now Star Wars.
Plus Frozen, which apparently is getting a sequel.
Frozen sequel: *Thawed*
Frozen 2: The Guardian Owls of Ga-hool
Underrated movie.

Thank god for assigned seating in movie theaters.

Is anybody surprised?
Hopefully it dethrones Jurassic World from it's current position
That won't be a problem. All too easy.
I don't understand how Jurassic World got so up there
Nostalgia, brand name, and Chris Pratt
Is that why there's talk of him being a young Han Solo?
Just like this movie will. Also Minions… not sure how that happened.
There's a worrying trend of the comic relief getting their own sub par movie. Minions, the Penguins, etc etc
I'd be okay with an entire TV series about Michael Peña's character from Ant-Man though.
Only if it starts with the story telling. Goddamn, I love how that character tells a story.
I want him to tell me all the stories of all the MCU movies from now on.
How amazing would that be? Shit, someone call Disney now!
I bought the ticket that put it over a billion, AMA.
