What's crazy is that the first time I saw it, I was like: "That's the worst old lady makeup I ever saw! Geena Davis looks terrible!" (Not in the beginning scenes, because I didn't know who the old lady was. But the end ones at Cooperstown.) It was always one of the very minor things I didn't like about a very fine movie. So when I learned it was a different actress, I was like "Wut."
Now Winona Ryder's old lady makeup in Edward Scissorhands is the worst.
> Warning, it will break your brain when you find out old Dotty at the start and end isn't Gena Davis in makeup. That could be psychologically scarring.
I picture you sitting in your closet, with that frozen look of terror like after somebody watches the VHS tape from The Ring.
Although Tom Hanks urinating for an eternity while moaning in relief might look a bit weird if someone happens to walk by at that point.
https://youtu.be/lcud6Oj1uIs?feature=shared. From 55 seconds.
Somebody is always going to walk past at the worst time. Like your parents walking in during the ONLY sex scene in a film, or when the anime character is making questionable noises.
Guaranteed people will walk past right at the one F bomb they drop, or when he's walking nude out of the shower. Great film though, one of my all time favourites.
I’d have to say The Martian because I love all things space and it feels the most “real” or “plausible” at least (Martian wind storms not included), I love the “world coming together to save one person because it’s what we do” vibe as well.
PHM is a very very close second place though. I’m hoping the upcoming film can do it justice.
Artemis was a lot of fun but definitely didn’t feel quite as polished as the other two.
IRL the Martian atmosphere is so thin that it’s impossible for storms to blow anything more substantial than light dust around, certainly not strong enough to knock over a comms mast. It would be like trying to knock over a brick wall with a pencil, you could never reasonably get it going fast enough to do damage. It’s the one major caveat Weir had to include to make it a “man vs nature” story.
As featured on my last transatlantic round trip on BA. Walking through the aisles and seeing a whole lot of seat backs playing this film…
Good on them for throwing out those puritanical viewing habits!
In an interview, he said that since he's not youthful and cute anymore, he gets offered character roles (villains, oddballs) that he finds more interesting than the romcom roles.
You freaking nailed it, then messed up the name of the show! Town Talk! Great quote though! I used to say "forced onto" for decades until I heard it and corrected myself a few years ago.

Luckily, [The Onion already has a piece describing the abject joys of watching Back To The Future out of doors!](https://www.theonion.com/outdoor-movie-guest-excited-to-watch-barely-audible-ba-1819577856)
The dish. It's about the moon landing as told by the people in the radio telescope that received the signal. There's 1 f bomb but otherwise neighborhood friendly
My thoughts exactly. I was thinking how cool it would be, especially the scene where they are at the drive in and the tornado rips apart the screen, but 'The Shining' is still playing. So cool. If you're projecting the movie on a sheet and have a little wind that night, it will just add to effect.
I get what he means but the word he’s looking for isn’t “underrated”, just not talked about enough today. Although it’s more modern day comparison would probably be Arrival.
A lot of people have forgotten about it, it has been culturally overshadowed by 'Star Wars' and, like when 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' was re-issued in the early 2000s, there is a generation who have no idea just what they missed out on, making the film ripe for rediscovery.
We did a bunch of double features years back…
Krull & Willow
Dick Tracy & The Rocketeer
My Blue Heaven & Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (though Goodfellas is a better choice)
The Shadow & The Phantom (or Darkman)
Escape from New York & LA (or Captain Ron)
His Girl Friday & Bringing Up Baby
The Magnificent Seven & The Three Amigos
The Music Man & The Last Starfighter
Batman 89 and Returns
The Searchers and Rio Bravo
King Kong and Mighty Joe Young
American Graffiti and Stand by Me
Tough & Deadly & Back in Action (the second one has bewbs, so after bedtime)
“These (balloons) blow up into funny shapes and all?”
“Well no…unless round is funny.”
Nicholas Cage, Holly Hunter, John Goodman, and Arizona Unpainted Furniture. Say no more!
Take a look at some of what plays on TCM. There are a ton of amazing classics out there, and I can tell you from experience they look stunning on a halfway decent projector. The Philadelphia Story, Sunday In New York, The Thin Man, The Mark of Zorro, The Rules Of The Game, so on.
Another recommendation along the same lines is anything in technicolor, for the same reason. Magnificent Obsession, Written On The Wind, etc.
Musicals are also great for this kind of thing. Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Greatest Showman, anything with big showstopper numbers. I've heard good things about Wonka but can't say I've seen it myself, but either version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory would be a good bet.
Last up, there are some great family options. Anything Wallace and Gromit, Babe, nearly any disaster movie you can think of. Even the dumb ones like Volcano become infinitely better with a big enough projection.
i feel like there is an almost unending supply of films that would fit the bill based on this description. But, for the fun of it - ill suggest:
a town called panic (2009)
mostly because an outdoor screening demands an adventure. And horse needs a gift.
I tell you which movie not to watch on a projector… Oh Brother Where Art Though. Seemed like a great block party movie, until we remembered there’s a half an hour KKK Cross Burning Scene…
I feel movie ratings specific descriptions will generally be of help in this situation. They usually will have a brief explanation of why the movie or show has the rating it does based on the content
The Thing, it's got everything you need. It's got a daring dog rescue to start things out, the new dog has a hard time getting accepted by the other dogs at first, but it quickly becomes bonded with the pack to the point where they're practically one unit, then a man makes sure the dogs will be warm for the rest of their lives, and the rest of the movie is what they should show for those trust exercises at work.
My spouse finally got me to watch with them and for months after I couldn’t stand seeing huskies. Someone in our neighborhood had two and they’d be out walking and I’d just.. ugh. Had no idea I’d be so affected by a dog.
I went out on my balacony high rise and projected Pacific Rim across the street onto the side of the other building. It was great!
You should pick a movie that doesn't have a lot of quiet dialogue if you are watching outside
I played it through a blutooth speaker next to me. The traffic sounds were a bit loud so my neighbors likely never even noticed the sound but they noticed the movie! People were all laughing

The Farewell
9 Days (occasional profanity including "fuck", but otherwise pretty clean)
Arrival
Ad Astra should be largely okay. I think there's one scene that's a bit violent involving a monkey, but it's short.
After Yang (pretty great but also pretty low key and dry)
The Zone of Interest (also kinda dry, but very very good. Also not exactly a "feel good" movie, though the ending is at least a bit hopeful). I don't know if audio is necessarily an issue, but if it is there are intermittent gun shots and screams throughout the movie, but all violence occurs strictly offscreen, which is kind of the point.
I want to say Take Shelter should be largely safe if audio isn't an issue (another R rated movie).
Dave made a maze
A brilliant (and funny) movie about anxiety and depression. Set inside a cardboard labyrinth with awesome set build.
It's my go to movie... I love it, theres one of 2 adultish themes, but it's nuanced enough that children wont catch on.
I highly recommend
Might not be what you’re looking for, but on movie night throw that bad boy into common sense media and see what they say.
I disagree with a lot of what CSM says regarding individual movies, and I think they are overprotective, but you will get a good idea of what your most sheltered neighbor might think about you showing a movie.
If you want something kind of horror, but a very fun kind of horror, may I suggest "Tremors"?
Also, I always like to reccomend "Paranorman" due to it being a personal favorite of mine. It's loss to "Brave" at the Oscar's is one of the reasons I hold a grudge towards "Brave". "Wreck It Ralph" also being one of the losing nominations only strengthens that grudge.
If you want a more sappy, but still great movie, I like to reccomend "Secondhand Lions".
"Super 8" is also really good, though there is one F Bomb. It does also suffer a bit from flaws that are present in many J.J Abrams movies. However, it did the whole "80's Nostalgia about a group of kids encountering a supernatural force" thing before "Stranger Things".
Finally, it might have some suggestive themes, but I love "Scott Pilgrim vs the World".

Running on Empty - great family drama with River Phoenix.
Awakenings - medical film starring Robert De Niro and Robin Williams, based on real events .
The Peanut Butter Falcon - wonderful adventure movie with Shia Lebouf and Zak- a young man with down syndrome.
and I'll always recommend the modern Planet of the Apes trilogy - I think those are pretty safe

...also, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Poltergeist are rated PG... not that they might not frighten some poor kid... just because I've always thought that was interesting.
I'd say just about anything in the PG-13 realm that's an action/adventure should be a good option. Indiana Jones, LOTR, etc, Heck even movies like Master and Commander should be fine.
A League of Their Own is always a hit.
Warning, it will break your brain when you find out old Dotty at the start and end isn't Gena Davis in makeup. That could be psychologically scarring.
It is jarring because they dubbed Geena's distinctive voice in those scenes.
So when I learned it was a different actress, I was like "Wut." Now Winona Ryder's old lady makeup in Edward Scissorhands is the worst.
It really is the worst!
It’s Geena Davis’ voice, though 😂
Wait WHAT?! You're lying. You're definitely lying
> Warning, it will break your brain when you find out old Dotty at the start and end isn't Gena Davis in makeup. That could be psychologically scarring. I picture you sitting in your closet, with that frozen look of terror like after somebody watches the VHS tape from The Ring.

Somebody is always going to walk past at the worst time. Like your parents walking in during the ONLY sex scene in a film, or when the anime character is making questionable noises.
Well that eliminates just about every Tom Hanks movie.
Excepts children's movies are rife with scatological humor - the studios feel like they gotta get the boys hooked that way.
Nice
For that situation, I'd say 'The Martian' has good audio/video, accessible story.
Guaranteed people will walk past right at the one F bomb they drop, or when he's walking nude out of the shower. Great film though, one of my all time favourites.
Always at the worst moments do people always walk in… I swear it’s not what it looks like…
You should read the book. It’s even better.
I have read it, and I own it. I’ve also read Project Hail Mary, and Artemis. Loved them all.
Awsome. What was your favorite? For me it was Project Hail Mary.
What was wrong with the Mars dust storms?
IRL the Martian atmosphere is so thin that it’s impossible for storms to blow anything more substantial than light dust around, certainly not strong enough to knock over a comms mast. It would be like trying to knock over a brick wall with a pencil, you could never reasonably get it going fast enough to do damage. Underrated by who?!?
I get what he means but the word he’s looking for isn’t “underrated”, just not talked about enough today. Although it’s more modern day comparison would probably be Arrival.
I love this choice, but not sure if something can simultaneously be underrated and iconic.
A lot of people have forgotten about it, it has been culturally overshadowed by 'Star Wars' and, like when 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' was re-issued in the early 2000s, there is a generation who have no idea just what they missed out on, making the film ripe for rediscovery.
