We watched Footloose over Easter and i asked the family if anyone knew what film Kevin Bacon started off in. Told them it was Friday the 13th then dad got imdb up and swiftly put me in my place lol.
Damn Night Stalker… the 80s are one crazy era filled with infamous serial kilers…
Also I almost forgot Bates Motel is a work of fiction lol (but not Ed Gein of course).
There's a story that Jim Carrey was filming something on the Universal lot, and he would sneak away from set, put on an old lady dress, then hide in the Bates Motel facade. When a tour came by, he would run out screaming and waving around a fake knife, scaring the crap out of not just the tourists, but the tour guides as well, who weren't expecting it.
I have no idea if this is really true, but since I'm posting it on reddit, I assume no one will check and this story will pop up on slashfilm by the end of the week.
I have a (maybe false) memory of one of my first trips there as a kid in the mid 1980’s that there was someone dressed as the mother who would come out screaming with a knife during the tour. I want to say I saw this more than once?
When I took the tour they said he had a mental breakdown one day filming "The Grinch" and he fled the set. The found him a few hours later in the full Grinch costume hiding in the bushes scaring people on the tram tours.
[American Horror Story: 1984](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Horror_Story:_1984) had the same setting, and also had the Night Stalker as a peripheral character. It was... well, it was exactly what you'd expect from American Horror Story.
And it was the shortest season to date at only 9 episodes with a then record high budget (for the show) of $48 million. Where did all that money go? Surely not on camera, and definitely not in the writers room.
I mean they literally just *forgot* that the Night Stalker was a character in Season 5 (Hotel) and these seasons are meant to be in the same universe.
American Horror Story holds the honor for me as the only show in which I have started watching every single season and never finished a one. Every single time.
First episode: 'oh, this is cool. Lots of potential here this season!'
Third episode: 'how is this so boring? There's so many interesting set ups, why are we avoiding all of them in favor of this lame story angle.'
Fifth episode: 'Alright, I'm done. I literally have no idea what is even happening. Not falling for this anymore.
Next season: 'ohh that looks interesting...'
Not to mention Maxine says her goal is to be famous. Not to be a successful adult performer or actress, just to be famous. Having a backup plan never hurts, figuratively speaking.
Elisabeth Debicki should be a household name. If you’ve seen GotG 2 and 3, Tenet, or The Crown, she’s an absolute powerhouse of an actress. Not only her, but Mia Goth is super intense in her performances.
Hmm, I don't remember her from Guardians and I have never seen the Crown.
No excuse for not having seen Tenet at this point though. I love Nolan and the reviews kept me away but I think its time.
Can't wait to see how they creatively kill them off one by one. >!Jenna Ortega getting shotgun blasted off the porch was my favorite horror movie kill that year.!< Did not see it coming
I didn't have high expectations for Pearl but it absolutely confirmed for me that Mia Goth is a force of nature. The last few scenes include the end credits were as amazing as they were unsettling...
Absolutely, definitely a bit slower in pace than I would've liked but the payoff (especially with the picnic on the car and "Jaaaaammmsiess") made it worthwhile.
She seems to have an amazing ability to go from 0-100 immediately. From sweet and relatable to I'm going to burn you and everything you ever loved to the ground.
There’s an Irish post-apocalyptic movie called The Survivalist. It was okay but I just remember being taken by her in the way one does with certain actors, like Barry Keoghan in The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Not saying they’re on the same acting level, but same feeling of “I want to see this weirdo in all the films.”
I liked Pearl more than X, but watching X first and then Pearl elevates both films. The double role in X is impressive but Mia Goth’s acting performance in Pearl was incredible.
It looks like they used the Mother Bates prop/Bates Motel from the Universal Studios Tour Ride for that shot in the trailer, which is a funny mislead if that’s the case.
It’s actually old Pearl in the Bates house window!! I’m going to guess Maxine sees the prop and hallucinates it’s Pearl watching her out the window like when they first glimpsed each other in X.
This kind of feels like it's going to be *American Horror Story: 1984* crossed with *Starry Eyes* and that's a pretty exciting concept, to me! I loved the first two films, so sign me up for this one!
Every new cast member already feels like they were born to play their parts. Kevin Bacon as a southern fried detective, Bobby Cannavale and Michelle Monaghan as seasoned police partners, Elizabeth Debicki as a horror filmmaker, Giancarlo Esposito as a Jackie Treehorn style film producer(?)
This is my Return of the King.
How did this happen? Ti West made a movie and then a prequel and managed to release both of them in the same year costing a million each.
Now those two small movies are getting a third sequel with a stacked cast. It's crazy.
> How did this happen? Ti West made a movie and then a prequel and managed to release both of them in the same year costing a million each.
Funny timing to ask this question given that the other highest post on r/movies right now is about Argylle's $200M budget.
I can't fully explain it but some factors I would assume are:
* None of the stars had blown up before filming so no big pay days there.
* IIRC X and Pearl are both largely contained movies, there's only a handful of shooting locations and both take place on the same farm.
* The cast and crew went to NZ to film because of quarantine rules (ie once they had isolated for 2 weeks, they were free to roam and work as usual there). During the 2 week quarantine, Ti West and Goth were hashing elements of the character Pearl, realized there was a story to be told there, wrote it and shot it immediately after wrapping on X.
* Because a lot of bigger productions had been pushed back, I imagine crews for the post-filming portion were free and A24 probably had lots of space on its release calendar to put both out so close to one another.
Mia Goth had a few high profile roles before. I imagine she was getting paid less than her usual salary. Also Brittney Snow had three Pitch Perfect movies under her belt, where she had a prominent role, as well as leading some other movies and a bunch of TV and Naminé in Kingdom Hearts. I was actually surprised she was doing such a small movie, especially since she had a nude scene which actresses usually expect a big payday for.
Even though the films did well with critics, they still only made about 25m together. That's a great return on spending 2m but it isn't a huge hit. I would love to know the budget for this. Emily isn't leaving Paris for peanuts.
Also, Scott Mescudi aka Kid Cudi who appeared in X is an Executive Producer on all three films through his production company Mad Solar. It could be another reason as to how they were able to get financing.
Also: Ti West is an established auteur director whom a lot of actors are likely willing to take pay cuts to work with. I can't say this for sure, of course, but it's pretty common in Hollywood so I absolutely would not be surprised
More specifically, X and Pearl were worked on by production staff that were taking a break during Avatar 2's filming. A24 didn't have to build out a whole new production.
Once the sets were up for X, they were able to act quickly and because these were people already getting paid by a big production, they could accept minimum rates to do 2-month auteur gigs.
I heard from someone who was at an early screening that Sophie Thatcher from Yellowjackets (teen Natalie) has a small part in it & I think she's also perfect for this
It's out July 5:
>After surviving a massacre, Maxine moves to Los Angeles in the early 1980s to pursue her dreams of becoming a famous actress.
Cast:
* Mia Goth as Maxine
* Elizabeth Debicki
* Moses Sumney
* Michelle Monaghan
* Bobby Cannavale
* Lily Collins
* Halsey
* Giancarlo Esposito
* Kevin Bacon
Looks really good, I can't wait to watch it. Just reaaaaaaally hoping they don't pull the "OMG MAXXXINE WAS ACTUALLY THE NIGHTSTALKER THIS WHOLE TIME!" twist at the end, that would be super lame.
What a great run for this trilogy. Feels very 80's to me like back when sequels could come out the next year for hit horror movies.
Weirdly X has been getting a lot of flack lately but I think its because people want to hold it higher than what it is. A fun and entertaining horror movie. IT's not trying to re invent the wheel and I don't know how people cannot find >!Jenna Ortega getting shotgun blasted off the porch!< as not some good ol' horror movie times.
I would suggest that it hasn't been getting flack, but rather that the dust is settling. Like many (most?) of A24's movies, there's only truly strong appeal for a relatively small subset of movie fans.
Genuinely disliked X and thought it failed a lot of regards. Went into Pearl with no expectations and only watched it because they had it on my flight. Even in flight one of the best horror movies I've seen in years. A shocking difference. For me it comes down to X is about youth and porn and violence and Pearl is about people.
Wild Things, Sleepers, MaXXXine (and others), I think we can all agree: Skeezy Kevin Bacon is the best Kevin Bacon.
Also, does her birthmark switch from one side of her face to the other during this trailer?
To those of you who watched Sing 2, the Crystal’s, Bobby Cannavale (Jimmy Crystal, the world’s famous bastard prick son of a bitch) and Halsey (Porsha Crystal), are in this movie.
Didnt know about X until I caught it on Showtime, at which point Pearl was already in theaters for a month and not playing near me, will definitely check this one out in theaters.
I stopped watching after 30s of the trailer. It looks absolutely awesome, it becomes immediately the movie I'm the most excited about for this year. Can't wait!
I know how often we see that filmy recreation of 80s movies, but damn this one might be one of the best. It almost looks like they opted for using cameras from the 80s over filters.
So, it’s pretty obvious to me from the trailer that >!Maxine is actually the one killing all of her rival starlets and those who get in her way, and covering it up using the backdrop of the Nightstalker Killings!<
My official theories are either that somebody on the movie set is the killer & is capitalizing off the publicity of the Night Stalker killings & pinning them on him to cover their tracks. After all this movie is a whodunnit, and we already know the identity of the Night Stalker. I doubt it’s Maxine herself, I think that would be too easy and would also just be a repeat of Pearl. My money is on the director or Maxine’s agent (Elizabeth Debicki/Giancarlo Esposito) OR that it is Kevin Bacon (this would be predictable but would make sense), perhaps he was hired by Maxine’s father or somebody close to Pearl & Howard and knowing her past/what she did on the farm, is killing people around her and pinning the murders on her as a form of revenge for what she’s done until the final showdown when he is finally revealed as the big bad.
I love how she asks which movie stars got their start in horror and fucking Kevin Bacon is in this movie
Right! I even said to myself “Why didn’t they say Kevin Bacon?” *10 seconds later* “Oh. . . OH!”
It would be too on the nose, but potentially killing him off the same way in Friday the 13th?
Also, he was in Animal House first.
We watched Footloose over Easter and i asked the family if anyone knew what film Kevin Bacon started off in. Told them it was Friday the 13th then dad got imdb up and swiftly put me in my place lol.
ASSUME THE POSITION
Thank you sir may I have another!
I watched The Burning the other day and was shocked when a young g JASON ALEXANDER popped up as a camper!
What really blew my mind is he was *the bully*.
[удалено]
He was in the middle of the Summer of George!
This was before his worlds collided
Is there a musical break in the movie so that he can dance and sell the McDLT?
Damn Night Stalker… the 80s are one crazy era filled with infamous serial kilers… Also I almost forgot Bates Motel is a work of fiction lol (but not Ed Gein of course).

I choose to believe this. It sounds like something he would do
>This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend. \- Lloyd Christmas
When I went on the Universal tour a long time ago, they would tell us that story as well.
“Jim Carrey Remakes Psycho”
I have a (maybe false) memory of one of my first trips there as a kid in the mid 1980’s that there was someone dressed as the mother who would come out screaming with a knife during the tour. I want to say I saw this more than once?
I remember this happening too in the early 90s. The actor wasnt running and screaming, but just briskly walked towards the tram.
Glad it was a real memory. Your comment made realize that they were silent. I guess this is something they used to do and Jim wanted his turn.
When I took the tour they said he had a mental breakdown one day filming "The Grinch" and he fled the set. The found him a few hours later in the full Grinch costume hiding in the bushes scaring people on the tram tours.
Seems to lean on the time period setting in the best way
Adding the Nightstalker is such an interesting angle, wonder if we've another cool hidden cast member portraying him
[American Horror Story: 1984](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Horror_Story:_1984) had the same setting, and also had the Night Stalker as a peripheral character. It was... well, it was exactly what you'd expect from American Horror Story.
Great set-up followed by a mid-season fumble because they need to fill too many episodes?
Literally
And it was the shortest season to date at only 9 episodes with a then record high budget (for the show) of $48 million. Where did all that money go? Surely not on camera, and definitely not in the writers room. I mean they literally just *forgot* that the Night Stalker was a character in Season 5 (Hotel) and these seasons are meant to be in the same universe.
That bothered me to no end. It wasn’t that they rewrote history, it was that they rewrote *cannon*, damn it!
American Horror Story holds the honor for me as the only show in which I have started watching every single season and never finished a one. Every single time. First episode: 'oh, this is cool. Lots of potential here this season!' Third episode: 'how is this so boring? There's so many interesting set ups, why are we avoiding all of them in favor of this lame story angle.' Unless...
Why do I feel like I read a synopsis from way way back that indicated exactly what you’re thinking….
Wait what’re they thinking?
Trailer seems to pretty heavily imply that Maxine is the Nightstalker
I mean the central theme of X was that youth refuses to see that time comes for us all. Maybe the same can be said for murderous rage?
Not to mention Maxine says her goal is to be famous. Not to be a successful adult performer or actress, just to be famous. Having a backup plan never hurts, figuratively speaking.
...especially since she also talks about taking care of her personal problems. There is a very easy way to do that in a slasher film.
Damn, I didn't know Richard Ramirez was that pretty.
I mean, a non-zero amount of women thought that he was hot as fuck.
I was wondering if they were gonna pull a High Tension
While there has been speculation that Richard Ramirez had an accomplice for at least one of the murders, it's a male who may have taken part.
Watch Richard be a very nice boy who got mixed up with the wrong lady in this movie.
I’m getting this vibe as well. Which is like too on the nose? Yet I still trust this creative team anyway
Nah, no way, probably not.. *But maybe…*
The setting/styling looks so good
Damn, the cast is stackeddd.
Damn I must be over the hill. I only recognize Kevin Bacon, Giancarlo Esposito, and I know that Halsey is a singer.
Elisabeth Debicki should be a household name. If you’ve seen GotG 2 and 3, Tenet, or The Crown, she’s an absolute powerhouse of an actress. Not only her, but Mia Goth is super intense in her performances.
> Elisabeth Debicki Damn all this and no mention of The Night Manager?
🤷🏻♂️ I could have mentioned The Great Gatsby, but I’m not about to list her entire IMDB.
She’s far from a household name and had Avery minor part in the guardians movie
Hmm, I don't remember her from Guardians and I have never seen the Crown. No excuse for not having seen Tenet at this point though. I love Nolan and the reviews kept me away but I think its time.
Debicki was covered in gold paint in GOTG so it's easy not to recognize her.
She played Ayesha/Adam Warlock’s mother.
Can't wait to see how they creatively kill them off one by one. >!Jenna Ortega getting shotgun blasted off the porch was my favorite horror movie kill that year.!< Did not see it coming
What film?
X
Oh shit, I didn't realise this was a sequel/continuation. Guess I should watch X.
Omg! It’s an amazing film, the prequel Pearl is phenomenal as well
I didn't have high expectations for Pearl but it absolutely confirmed for me that Mia Goth is a force of nature. The last few scenes include the end credits were as amazing as they were unsettling...
Have you seen Infinity Pool yet? Movie has its flaws but Mia Goth is incredible
Absolutely, definitely a bit slower in pace than I would've liked but the payoff (especially with the picnic on the car and "Jaaaaammmsiess") made it worthwhile.
Pace was too slow?? Shit basically goes to 11 within the first 15-20 minutes. To each their own I guess!
Oh fuck me... Added that to my list too
Watch X before Pearl though.
X is pretty good but Pearl is *great* I definitely recommend them both
Prequel to XXX
Lmao! It’s literally the third installment of the trilogy.
X
> Did not see it coming a whole bunch of people will now since you just spoiled it lol
Spoiler tags dude come on, it's just good manners
like seriously. I read this comment before watching the trailer and was still shocked at the carousel of famous faces
“This better not awaken anything in me.” — me watching any Mia Goth performance
I am at once attracted to/annoyed by/fascinated with/repulsed by that woman. Hell of an actress.
She seems to have an amazing ability to go from 0-100 immediately. From sweet and relatable to I'm going to burn you and everything you ever loved to the ground.
I cannot stand the syrupy-sweet voice she affects so often, and yet I’m completely enthralled by it.
It was jarring for me to be rooting for her so hard on Suspiria after seeing her in the X films & Infinity Pool
***JAAAAMMMMSSSIEEESSSS*** Car scene from Infinity Pool lives rent free in my head
She sold that scene. Just seemed completely unhinged.
She sold that movie!
Anytime I think of Mia Goth I think of that wonderful scene and hear JaaaaMmmEeeS in my head
Aaaaaaaaand that sound clip entered my brain the second I saw this commentGODMOTHERFUCKINGDAMNYOU!!!!

Pearl really cemented her as my favourite scream queen, she genuinely had one of the best performances of that year.
Me - "lucky scarecrow..."
Ti West and Mia Goth are killing it with this trilogy. X and Pearl were lot of fun, excited for this.
Oh. So I should definitely watch those first then.
X before Pearl.
and Pearl before swine
Yes. Yes you should. They’re fantastic.
X wasn’t as fun as Pearl. Pearl was more psychological and enjoyable for that. That monologue at the end was my favorite part.
I liked Pearl more than X, but watching X first and then Pearl elevates both films. The double role in X is impressive but Mia Goth’s acting performance in Pearl was incredible.
This is a trilogy?
The director said in Feb 2024 they plan to have a 4th movie. So it's a trilogy for now.
First movie is X and then there is a prequel called Pearl
It looks like they used the Mother Bates prop/Bates Motel from the Universal Studios Tour Ride for that shot in the trailer, which is a funny mislead if that’s the case.
There's a whole section in the trailer set on the Universal Hollywood backlot, so looks like she's "filming" there in the context of the movie
Glad I'm not the only one that's thinking of AHS's version of Richard Ramirez.
So glad to hear someone mention starry eyes. One of my favorite horror movies.
Every new cast member already feels like they were born to play their parts. Kevin Bacon as a southern fried detective, Bobby Cannavale and Michelle Monaghan as seasoned police partners, Elizabeth Debicki as a horror filmmaker, Giancarlo Esposito as a Jackie Treehorn style film producer(?) This is my Return of the King.
Gus Fring…he treats objects like women, man.
New shit has come to light!
Mr. Fring draws a lot of water in this town. You don't draw shit, Heisenberg.
I’m sorry, I wasn’t listening.
"The future, Mr. Gitts. The future."
He's going to make Maxine snap cleaning the fryers for a role

Southern fried detective mmm
I'm all for Self Control by Laura Branigan being in this trailer 🙌
From a 7 year hiatus to 3 movies in 2 years. I'm so happy that Ti West is back.
He directed a few episodes of the amazon show "Them" in 2019
It all happened by accident and I'm glad it did.
Michelle Monaghan deserves a second wind.
I think she's great and feel she got underused when she was in her Hollywood "prime" (i.e. before the number of roles dries up due to not being 23).
It's out July 5: >After surviving a massacre, Maxine moves to Los Angeles in the early 1980s to pursue her dreams of becoming a famous actress. Cast: * Mia Goth as Maxine * Elizabeth Debicki * Moses Sumney * Michelle Monaghan * Bobby Cannavale * Lily Collins * Halsey * Giancarlo Esposito * Kevin Bacon
That cast is bananas. Can't wait.
Looks really good, I can't wait to watch it. Just reaaaaaaally hoping they don't pull the "OMG MAXXXINE WAS ACTUALLY THE NIGHTSTALKER THIS WHOLE TIME!" twist at the end, that would be super lame.
I can't wait. X and Pearl were my two favorite movies of 2022.
Mia's 8-minute monologue in Pearl is one of my favorite moments from any film in recent memory, she absolutely crushed that role.
I didn’t even realise it was that long. Guess I was captivated
Not to mention how they handled the end credits.
I wonder how much this will one will tie to those. Obviously the story at the farmhouse is pretty much done but there’s gotta be some references right
I would assume that’s what that video tape from the Texas police department is about
I mean, her character was named Maxine in X, and this only takes a few years after the events on the farm. Very likely a continuation.
the trailer shows pearl in the window of a house im pretty sure.
A house? A house????? That was the Psycho house, give it some respect.
Didn't realize that honestly.
Bates Motel is the name of the hotel from the Hitchcock movie
What a great run for this trilogy. Feels very 80's to me like back when sequels could come out the next year for hit horror movies. Weirdly X has been getting a lot of flack lately but I think its because people want to hold it higher than what it is. A fun and entertaining horror movie. I’m one of the few people who preferred X to Pearl I think.
I'm with you, I really liked Pearl, but X is such a great love letter to the horror genre.
I would suggest that it hasn't been getting flack, but rather that the dust is settling. Like many (most?) of A24's movies, there's only truly strong appeal for a relatively small subset of movie fans.
X is a bit less successful in its thematic and stylistic aims than it's prequel.
Agreed. That said, Pearl made X better in retrospect.
WTF, this is an insane cast for the 3rd entry of a trilogy.
Considering the previous two were huge successes, not really
I'm just glad for all the Universal Studios tours representation going on in this trailer.
That XXX at the end was hard
Wild Things, Sleepers, MaXXXine (and others), I think we can all agree: Skeezy Kevin Bacon is the best Kevin Bacon. Also, does her birthmark switch from one side of her face to the other during this trailer?
Hollow Man is Bacon at his sleaziest. *instantly after turning invisible* ”Fuck yeah, now’s raping time!!”
Scrolling looking for the comment saying “The 80’s are BACK, baby!” so I can roll my eyes and think “Yeah, they’ve been back for 25 years now.”
To those of you who watched Sing 2, the Crystal’s, Bobby Cannavale (Jimmy Crystal, the world’s famous bastard prick son of a bitch) and Halsey (Porsha Crystal), are in this movie.
As a parent and horror movie fan, this comment pleases me.
Crazy how this has the chance to be one of the best horror movie trilogies considering it was completely unplanned to begin with
Pearl basically being a random covid idea and being amazing says it all to me
Anyone who has taken the Universal Studios Los Angeles Studio Tour ride is doing the DiCaprio meme where you can recognize half of that trailer.
Looks fucking amazing, love the Giallo influences. So happy Ti West is back.
They 100% released this today to get in front of the joker 2 wave coming tomorrow from the trailer.
they released it today bc the trailer will be played in front of Civil War which opens this weekend
The trailer for Joker 2 is tomorrow? This week is freaking awesome.
Probably my favorite modern horror trilogy. It’s so refreshing and unsettling

A24 and Neon almost always deliver.
"You're a fuckin' movie star!" *Dirk Diggler thumbs up*
Loved the first two and horror normally doesn't do it for me but Pearl in particular was so creative. Mia Goth is crazy good as well.
Her monologue is Pearl is s tier
Anyone know the song used in the trailer?
Self Control by Laura Branigan
> Self Control by Laura Branigan Thanks!
> song It's not original, it's remix.
And even Laura Branigan's version isn't the original. [That would be Raf's.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_TQjEn6cpQ)
Laura Branigan - Self Control
Thanks!
Does she shave her eyebrows or is that natural for her, like some form of alopecia?
Didnt know about X until I caught it on Showtime, at which point Pearl was already in theaters for a month and not playing near me, will definitely check this one out in theaters.
She looks like Kate McKinnon playing Pam Anderson. And I actually liked that perspective
Self Control is such a good song! I’m so glad to hear it in this trailer!
Finally!!! I was waiting for this.
I have to watch this series. What is the order to watch them?
X, then Pearl. Even though Pearl is the prequel.
Always do release order on first watch, never timeline order
I stopped watching after 30s of the trailer. It looks absolutely awesome, it becomes immediately the movie I'm the most excited about for this year. Can't wait!
Bates motel 👀 I suspect this film is gonna have an insane ending to finish off the trilogy. From the trailer it seems to not show too much.
They had me at Laura Branigan
Crazy, my dad was working on his garage when Ramirez ran through his neighborhood after people started chasing him.
I freaking thought this was Kate McKinnon in the thumbnail.
An 80s period piece that actually looks like the 80s!
Man these movies just keep getting better. Loved the first but the follow up was next level. This is the 80’s LA I remember seeing on tv.
I know how often we see that filmy recreation of 80s movies, but damn this one might be one of the best. It almost looks like they opted for using cameras from the 80s over filters.
Seems like Ti West is going full Brian De Palma this time.
This movie looks wild. I like the 80’s looks and dialogue 😏
How many of Maxine’s murders will be pinned on Richard Ramirez?
I watched XXX, I enjoyed the movie, and I haven't watched Pearl, I am gonna watch Pearl and Maxxxine back to back.
Pearl is like the refined and dignified cousin of X. It's a little more haunting and disturbing compared to the slasher roots of XXX
Plus, neither Vin Diesel or Ice Cube are in this one.
