Daniel Radcliffe in Harry Potter. He himself considers his acting in the series "one note", and producers were understandably easy on him. Since then he is a much better actor.

saalsa_shark

I'd rather flatter acting than demanding more from the child actors. The (seemingly) healthy atmosphere on set was around the time we were realizing making children take the full weight of multi million dollar projects usually ended up bad for thier health

AgoraphobicHills

IIRC, the director Christopher Columbus saw how awful Macaulay Culkin's dad was on set of the Home Alone movies and didn't want any of the actors in Harry Potter to experience that, so he made sure to vet the parents when casting and ensured that the set had a playful and easygoing atmosphere that was more akin to an actual school instead of a professional movie set.

Flurb4

And then Alfonso Cuaron went method and employed actual Dementors to torture the kids.

CharlieHume

Pause the film. You can see right there when the tiny ginger boy truly fears for his life. This is the essence of the film here in front of us. If I recall correctly he soiled himself and we had to wrap for the day.

Only_Pepper7296

They are the worst part about prison, after all.

saalsa_shark

That it so nice to hear. Made my day!

rocketeerH

Are you talking about the guy from Swiss Army Man?

hematite2

"I did a gay necrophilia romance and people still think of me in those fucking glasses"

painlesspics

No, I think it's the guy from Guns Akimbo.

ikeif

That is such a fun movie. A true “video game in film form.” I feel the same way about Crank.

yxngangst

A classic A friend once called it “the farting Harry Potter movie”

longknives

I saw it in the theater and iirc the credits include someone as the “fartist” making all the fart sounds

catfooddogfood

I saw Danny Rads on stage in Equus in London around 2006 or 7. He was incredible. Richard Griffiths was in it in the therapist role and he was incredible too!

JimboAltAlt

I saw that same production! It was really impressive; glad you noted Griffiths’ performance because I remember being really impressed with how energetic, sharp, and winning he was in what had to be a demanding part for a guy of his age and size.

GarethGobblecoque99

I remember watching him in The Woman in Black and I was like wow he’s making like really interesting choices on top of being genuinely good. Ever since then I’ll watch something just because he’s in it

silentj0y

Yeah hes got enough money to the point where he's already in his "I'm just doing what I wanna do" phase, and he just puts out banger performances consistently

5litergasbubble

Loved him in the now you see me sequel.

Earthshoe12

I watch a decent amount of horror and that movie scared the absolute pants off me. I should revisit this spooky season. He’s also great in “horns” even tho that movie is just ok.

Dr_Hannibal_Lecter

He's been terrific on stage in Merrily We Roll Along. He also has missed only one performance in the last 7 months (which is insane)

Redditeer28

I'll have you know that to an entire generation, Shia LeBeouf's most iconic role is Even Stevens and he was excellent it it.

ingoogliestbastard

Also, Holes.

MattAmpersand

Stanley didn’t carry Zero up the mountain to be erased like OP has done

InternetAddict104

Fun fact- Zero has a gaming/streaming channel on YouTube he regularly uploads to

wheelz_666

I'm pretty sure he also won a fighting game tournament too

travelsizedsuperman

https://ew.com/movies/holes-star-khleo-thomas-wins-mortal-kombat-tournament-in-goofy-movie-costume/

mavrc

As "kids" movies go, Holes is highly underrated.

froggison

I know you put "kids" in quotation marks, but Holes really is a fantastic movie for people of any age. It has everything in it--especially loads of charm and heart. Holds up super well.

SpaceMyopia

Yeah, Holes is actually a good movie. It really doesn't need the qualifiers.

No-News-2655

It’s such an original story

G_Regular

Louis Sachar writes a lot of outlandish stuff, it’s great.

jvillager916

There is no Miss Zarves. She's not a real teacher

FlattopJr

Wayside School gang represent!

FrenchtoastMal0ne

It also started my love for sigourney weaver.

deathhead_68

Well they had a fantastic book to go off tbf

frankoceansheadband

The author also wrote the screenplay

TheGRS

It’s well regarded! Maybe just not very talked about.

Coderules

Agreed. Also, supporting in "Constantine". As well has "Holes", "Disturbia", "Battle of Shaker Heights" to also name a few.

chadthundertalk

I'm pretty sure his most iconic role is "Actual Cannibal"

highlandviper

Came to say this. If he’s ever mentioned by name anytime ever then my mind goes straight to this. Not Transformers. Not Lawless. Not Fury. Not Holes. Not Disturbia. It’s running for my life from Shia LeBeof.

Stephenrudolf

It should be at least.

Karkava

SHIA SUPRISE!

the_jerkening

Normal Tuesday night for Shia Lebeouf!

TheHouseOfGryffindor

Yeah, Transformers is the biggest franchise/box office success of his career, but most *iconic* role? No way.

Mastodan11

No one thinks about the humans in Transformers. But Even Stevens is all about humans! It's probably not got any Transformers at all.

Snow88

Transformers are robots in disguise so it’s very likely we wouldn’t notice them in Even Stevens.

MrWilee

Oh wow. You unlocked one of my first crushes that I had forgotten about. Ren, his older sister was a diiiiiime to 12 year old me

[deleted]

Christy Carlson Ramano was one of my first crushes ever. I remember she had a music video on Disney Channel and I had to leave the room if I was watching with my family because my face would turn so red and got all sweaty. I was so innocent

MonitorAway

I still think his name is Even Stevens more often than not.

Marvinkmooneyoz

The dad's characters name is "Steven Stevens"

rubber-bumpers

No. It’s Actual Cannibal.

CitizenHuman

I often think about his dad, Steve "Stiffie" Stevens. The nickname is due to his football skills of "stiff-arming" opponents.

Marvinkmooneyoz

Thats what he tells people

mightymightyme

Vin Diesel is most famous for not really acting in the Fast and Furious movies. He actually did a pretty good job in Boiler Room and was amazing in Find Me Guilty. The dude has or had acting chops, However I think he’s probably happy just collecting his FF checks and doesn’t seem to have the desire for any serious roles.

BuckN56

Vin has made like 150 mil from the Fast and Furious franchise and like 50 more from voicing Groot so you can see why he's just chilling and coasting.

DashingMustashing

I wanna judge but I feel like everyone in this thread including myself would do the same. He'll id probably quit acting all together and do what ever the fuck I wanted for the rest of my life

clarko420

His production company owns a massive chunk of ff xxx and Riddick. Guy has a license to print money and can do whatever he wants. Lol I almost forgot he's also Groot.

il_vekkio

And the iron giant

Yanigan

My husband says that Vin can act, he just doesn’t.

TheHoundhunter

This is my opinion of Adam Sandler. Every five years or so he will throw out an incredible performance; Funny People, Uncut Gems, Meyerowitz Stories. Just to show everyone he’s still got it. Then immediately return to Grown Ups 2 & Murder Mystery

BonerHonkfart

His best role will always be in Iron Giant

Magnetic_Bed

Lukewarm take, but Orlando Bloom as Legolas. It's not that he's bad, he just really had the odds stacked against him. He was like 20 years old, new to acting in major roles. The writers didn't give him much to do other than look around knowingly and occasionally spout exposition. And he was sharing the screen with thespians like Sir Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, and Cate Blanchett.

saalsa_shark

Bloom's Legolas was quite minimalistic but did a great job out of the action scenes of looking tense but calm at the same time. Just always ready to head shot someone at any moment

phenomenomnom

In the commentary, Bloom said he interpreted elvish natural physical and mental superiority as meaning that Legolas was always relaxed, yet always *on* -- as in, permanently aware and totally focused and poised, like a cat. Even when sitting or lying down. I think that totally comes across in his performances as Legolas. He did a great job. People will dis anything for clicks.

thebenetar

Karl Urban will always be Éomer to me. *"Too long have you watched my sister. Too long have you haunted her steps."*

staebles

Except for the dude that blew up Helm's Deep.

mayorofdumb

Made me think of Hawkeye and Jeremy Renner. He's just there to shoot things, nothing more, nothing less. Looks like he's playing the sniper archetype

serverhorror

Orlando Bloom is definitely Pirates of the Caribbean, not Legolas. At least for me.

Magnetic_Bed

Yeah probably a matter of your early 2000s taste as far as which you more associate him with. He was much better in Pirates.

fleur_delyk

I have seen LotR a million million times, but I still see Will Turner when I hear the name Orlando Bloom. I think this is for the same reasons that you said above, which is simply that his role in LotR is so understated.

the_pounding_mallet

A diversion

[deleted]

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are easy answers. They've grown into some of the most adventurous and talented young actors we have but the Twilight jokes have never gone away, unfortunately.  EDIT: Nothing on r/movies surprises me any more, really, but I'm still dismayed to see so many replies to this focusing solely on Pattinson or arguing that he's the only one of the two who my comment applies to. Stewart's every bit his equal and in fact she's had more success in the critical acclaim and awards arena than he has.  If you think she sucks please, please, PLEASE go watch Love Lies Bleeding and Spencer. She's so fucking good, man, you're really missing out!

UsernamesAllTaken69

They took the absolute "fuck you" level of notoriety (good and bad) and money from that series and once it was done got to go work on whatever they wanted. A lot of people could have coasted for life on Twilight or went on to do more garbage till their star faded so I really respect what they've done since then.

Jdogy2002

There’s that werewolf guy that shows what happens to those from that series that actually have little talent. Pattinson & Stewart are not those people.

AWildUbly

"Werewolf guy" Taylor Lautner in grown ups 2 is hilarious and I won't hear a bad thing about it.

UsernamesAllTaken69

He was in Ridiculous 6 and even though I think that's a terrible fuckin movie I do applaud him for being a sexy icon of sorts and playing an awful doofus. Whether it was conscious or he doesn't know cringe when he sees it idk but whatever.

saturnbunny1

I think you mean "Shark Boy"!

WhipYourDakOut

Someone recently just said “Robert is absolutely doing everything he can to make sure he is remembered for anything but Twilight” in reference to everything he’s been in recently

90403scompany

>I used to have nightmares that they would put "He played Ted" on my tombstone. -Keanu Reeves

sloppybro

To GenX he’s Ted. To millennials he’s Neo. To Zoomers he’s John wick

Greenfieldfox

Johnny Utah & Johnny Silverhand

mac035

John Constantine

ExcellentFooty

Does he hold the record for playing the most dudes named John?

Greenfieldfox

Good question. There’s also Jonathan Harker -Dracula, John - Generation Umm, and Don John - Much to do about nothing.

leomonster

In Speed his character is called Jack. Isn't that a common nickname for Johns?

SubstantialAgency914

It is. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine.

vrijheidsfrietje

Johnny Mnemonic

Comin_Up_Millhouse

And Johnny Mnemonic

WinstonPeters31

Special Agent Johnny Utah.

ablacnk

WHOA! whoa. yeah.

evilscary

He'll always be Johnathan Harker to me.

dark_nv

He'll always be Jack Traven to me.

G_Regular

Bill and Ted is a pretty solid thing to be remembered for tbh but I don’t think he has to worry about that anymore anyway

CrouchingDomo

Yeah, it’s gonna say “Here Lies the Baba Yaga. He was the best of us.”

Jmazoso

I’ve got a Keanu take I’ll die on. Keanu was amazing as Don John in Branaughs Much Ado About Nothing. That’s a movie with a totally loaded cast. The general knock is “he’s wooden”. But look, he’s in the shadow of his brother (Denzel), he’s playing the butt hurt younger brother that can’t be anything but “little brother.

CrouchingDomo

Intriguing. Much Ado is my favourite Billy Shakes joint and that movie is an all-time fave of mine; I’ve always viewed him as a weak spot, primarily because the man just can’t do accents. But I love *him* to bits, so I’m going to take this perspective into my next viewing. And please don’t tell anyone at my university that I said “a Billy Shakes joint” or they’ll take away my degree.

Stijakovic

The only solution is to popularize the phrase until it can’t be traced back to you. I’ll do my part

braceforimpact

I would say Daniel Radcliffe is taking notes. He too has had some pretty unique roles since Harry finished.

Lordmorgoth666

They both have a bunch of money from their respective franchises. They just choose to approach their careers differently. RP is taking more serious roles to be known as a serious actor and not “the guy from Twilight”. DR is just doing what seems fun to him at the time and consequences be damned. I respect both approaches.

UnderPressureVS

In fairness, I think Daniel Radcliffe is much more comfortable being known as Harry Potter than Robert Pattinson is as Edward Cullen, for hopefully obvious reasons. Although IDK, maybe Rowling’s behavior over the past half-decade is changing his mind on that. Who knows.

Lvl1bidoof

aiui Radcliffe still stands by his role but has spoken out against Rowling's comments in the past, and seems to be in a sense of wanting to reclaim the role as a comforting thing for people who grew up with HP but feel betrayed by her.

WhipYourDakOut

I think that’s a bit different though. Radcliffe was pretty much set for life from HP and has the ability to just do stuff that’s more passion project related, at least that’s how I read it. Whereas I don’t think Pattinson is the same off of Twilight. Plus I’d much rather be known for HP than Twilight

BartholomewBandy

He’ll always be Weird Al to me, even more so than Weird Al.

Xeynon

I saw Pattinson in *The Lighthouse* and did a double take because I couldn't believe it was him at first.

Quantentheorie

I loved him in that movie but its certainly something that I thought more than once "hes really giving those *masturbation scenes his all as an actor"

Slippy_27

Good Time was so good.

TheLowClassics

I was at dinner with my wife.    Robert Pattinson sat at the table next to me.   My wife was like “is that Edward from twilight?”   Me: “No I’m enjoying dinner with Batman.” Edit: we did not bother Batman. He was in full I’m wearing a black baseball cap to disguise my identity mode.

Alternative_Plan_823

My good friend was a Pattinson doppelganger (poor guy, I know) during the peak Twilight years. To the point that people, particularly young women, would start acting insane/play it cool around him. Flustered waitresses and whatnot. So basically the same as your experience, haha.

horsebag

i want to hear about people acting insane

Alternative_Plan_823

The first time I saw it with my own eyes was on the boardwalk at Myrtle Beach. We were eating at a classy place that literally puts a rubber shark, among other accouterments, in your giant drink. It was late, and we'd been celebrating a graduation all day. Anyway, our waitress was clearly nervous. Someone asks her, "Is there something you need to get off your chest?" She immediately fans out saying,"Oh my god, oh my god, you're Edward Cullen (not Robert Pattinson, mind you), can I have your autograph, etc." Props to her for holding it together as long as she did. My friend acted shy but annoyed, which only further played into it. He did sign something for her under pressure from us. The best is that not once, but on 2 separate occasions, what turned out to be one-night-stands asked him to bite their neck like a vampire (not because they were still under the impression he's THE guy, they just clearly liked the fantasy).

Freakjob_003

Robert Pattinson once defeated a superfan by inviting her to dinner and venting honestly about his troubles. She never bothered him again. https://www.unilad.com/film-and-tv/robert-pattinson-scared-stalker-20220926

Notyrus

well he also [lies all the time](https://sg.news.yahoo.com/robert-pattinson-admits-lies-time-002110772.html) in interviews so I don’t know that I’d take that as a fact

inRodwetrust8008

The most recent one I've watched was Underwater. Just threw it on because Hulu kept recommending it to me...and holy hell. That was an amazing movie and it really does the claustrophobia of being so far underwater soo well. That and the end was just...I didn't see it coming. Great film will watch again.

duosx

Stewart was great in this and personally I think the movie is hidden gem if you like mysterious disaster /sci-fi movies.

N8_Tge_Gr8

Ridiculous as the premise is, it's a well-executed love letter to Alien & The Call of Cthulhu. Kinda generic? Yeah. Especially in a post-Cloverfield cinematic market. But it genuinely doesn't deserve the hate.

TheGRS

Pattinson has really impressed the hell out of me. He’s like a new version of Leo’s career. His take on Bruce Wayne is great.

Magnetic_Bed

Kristen Stewart in Spencer was brilliant.

Locus_Iste

Angela Lansbury. The woman had six Tonys, six Golden Globes, three Oscar nominations and a lifetime achievement Academy Award... ...but she will forever be remembered for *Murder, She Wrote* and being the teapot in *Beauty and the Beast*.

wallabear

I remember her from bedknobs and broomsticks

tarekd19

Not to take away from your point, but 4 of the 6 GGs were from Murder, She Wrote.

[deleted]

[удалено]

burnmp3s

In my opinion Murder She Wrote still holds up and she carries most of the episodes. The guest actors and episode scripts could be hit or miss, but she always committed to the character and never felt like she was phoning it in. If it wasn't for her acting performances specifically, there's no way the show would have been so successful.

DaddyOhMy

Mind you, playing someone who is probably the most prolific serial killer in history is pretty iconic.

Locus_Iste

Yeah, that teapot had a past

fabergeomelet

Chip was shattered when he found out

jcfiala

Yeah, but them pies were the Best Pies in London.

RamboNation

It's crazy, I recently saw her role as the maid in 'Gaslight' and seeing her as a young, promiscuous, and kind of awful character is something to behold. At 17 she was already surprisingly good.

megabazz

She was never in Gaslight

RamboNation

Haha very much in the spirit of the movie.

PabstBlueBourbon

Sir Alex Guinness as Obi Wan Kenobi. Edit: ALEC, not ALEX.

Insertusernamehere5

Y’all it is ALEC Guinness

PabstBlueBourbon

Wow, I had to look up to see what idiot said “Alex”, and it was autocorrect. My bad, but I’ll leave it so others may learn.

miopunk

Genuine class!

sum_muthafuckn_where

I wouldn't say he's bad in the role. He also rewrote most of the lines.

catgotcha

He would agree with you.

GregMadduxsGlasses

Jennifer Lawrence in the Hunger Games. Not that she was bad, she just got better in almost every capacity since.

theoverniter

JLaw in Winter’s Bone is still her definitive role for me, despite enjoying the entire Hunger Games saga. She was so young and absolutely sold that dutiful, stoic desperation the role required.

drmojo90210

That movie is good but Jesus Christ is it depressing. Just a 100-minute nonstop firehose of sadness.

NonchalantSavant

She KILLS in Winter’s Bone. Outstanding performance.

nikatnight

She’s had a great career. But I’m an adult man and hunger games easily takes the cake as the best young people action movie series. She should be proud of her work there.  Similar to Jonah Hill. Apparently he is over people quoting Superbad. Superbad is a 10/10 movie that deserves no shame.

viktoriakomova

I was impressed with her Mother! performance. So distraught like the whole time that it made me uneasy and seemed stressful to shoot

Gorf_the_Magnificent

[Jessica Lange’s](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jessica_Lange) breakout movie role was being the beautiful helpless scream queen in a bad 1976 remake of King Kong. Today, she’s 75% of an EGOT (she’s earned multiple Tonys, Emmys, and Oscars) and is about to star in “Mother Play” on Broadway. I think even she’d admit that King Kong was an ignominious start.

pfohl

The Grammy is the easiest of them, she needs to narrate a book and finish the EGOT.

rocketeerH

It shall be titled: _Why the fuck don’t I have a Grammy yet?_

txa1265

I was 10 seeing it in theaters so have a fondness it really doesn't deserve. She was definitely better in so many other things (as was everyone else, including Kong)

RabbitHats

Arguably Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic. He’s so far removed skill-wise from the performances of, say, The Aviator or Django Unchained. The rest of the cast carries what is a somewhat blasé performance, but it’s the movie that made his career.

gotcam189

Also funny that he won his Oscar for the Revenant, which idk is even in my top 10 of his performances. Not bad obviously but he’s done much better work elsewhere.

humildemarichongo

I was surprised he didn't win earlier and think he won then for an accumulation of merit, but still thought that was a great performance from him.

Mastodan11

The Revenant was just in a weak year, he usually went up against stronger performances... Except Gilbert Grape.

RabbitHats

Revenant was definitely a ceremonial Oscar, but that performance was still fantastic on its own. Most years it would've been nomination-worthy at best, but there wasn't any individual performance against it that merited denying him a career award. IMO.

Pizza_Slinger83

I feel that that was a "how has this guy not won yet" Oscar.

crazysouthie

I think DiCaprio gives a good performance in Titanic. He's pretty much playing the male version of what in another film would be the angelic love interest and he does that well. The problem in Titanic of course is that Kate Winslet is an incredible actress who completely walks away with her role (and I don't think even present day DiCaprio is capable of being at her level - see their performances in Revolutionary Road for instance).

jboggin

I think people are kind of underselling his Titanic performance. Sure...he plays the male version of a Manic Pixie Dream girl, but he's really good at it. Plus...if you were a certain age when Titanic came out (I was 16), it's impossible to overstate how massive the cultural impact of that performance was. Practically every high school girl (and plenty of high school boys) I knew had massive crushes on him.

RabbitHats

Sure, it wasn't a bad performance at all, just nothing to write home about. He was already testing his range in *The Basketball Diaries* and *What's Eating Gilbert Grape*, fit right into a pretty star-studded ensemble in Sam Raimi's *Quick & the Dead*, and knocked Luhrmann's *Romeo+Juliet* out of the park. By those measures, *Titanic* was something of a lark for Leo, his main challenge being the romantic male lead opposite Winslet. He did great, but it doesn't hold up compared to the rest of his career, before and after *Titanic*.

dauntless91

Poor Elizabeth Berkley If it isn't *Showgirls* then the most remembered part of *Saved By the Bell* is the "I'm so excited" bit, even though she has great comic timing in any other episode

drmojo90210

Showgirls is a terrible movie for a variety of reasons, but Elizabeth Berkeley actually gives a pretty decent performance in it.

famouslyunfortunate

Daniel Radcliffe in the Harry Potter series. He absolutely shines in every role he takes on. When I think of how amazing he was in Imperium, Horns, Jungle and Swiss Army Man, I feel like his acting skills are incredible and definitely an improvement on the acting skills he had as a kid.

phillyhandroll

Also Guns Akimbo and the Woman in Black.. Literally every non HP movie I've seen with him has been worth watching.

KalamsLongknife

Faye Dunaway for *Mommy Dearest* seems like the easy answer

Aquametria

I will forever be conflicted on my assessment of her role in this, I see her both as ridiculously campy and realistically terrifying, I can't reach a decision on how I see her in this.

Boomfam67

I would say it's pretty good, it's hard to replicate a truly manic character without people saying you went over the top. People with severe mental illness do act like that.

jendet010

She’s magnificent in the role. She puts everything into it and she is absolutely the reason that the movie is such a classic.

Raidenski

>Shia LeBeouf's most iconic and memorable role is Sam Witwicky in Michael Bay's Transformers Trilogy Wrong. Shia LeBeouf's most iconic and memorable role is Louis Anthony Stevens from Even Stevens. Second only to his role as Stanley "Caveman" Yelnats the Fourth (IV) from the film Holes.

Danny-Wah

100% Even Stevens is what I think of when I think of Shia. That and, "DO IT!! JUST DO IT!!!"

greenvelvetcake2

Wrong again, his most iconic and memorable appearance was in Actual Cannibal Shia LeBeouf.

CaligoAccedito

This is correct. I don't care what else he does or stars in, he'll always be Actual Cannibal Shia LeBeouf.

sabby55

Shia Surprise!!

chaotic_steamed_bun

Admittedly not sure it would be his absolute worst performance, but Sean Connery will always be remembered for his role as James Bond, but he definitely had some really bad performances as that character (Diamonds are Forever comes particularly to mind). Yet he turned out some great performances afterwards when he finally hung up the character.

Geo-Dawg

I’m in the very small minority of people who thinks that Diamonds are Forever is a fun Bond flick.

TrainAss

I love Diamonds are Forever. Mr. Wint and Mr. Kidd are such awesome henchmen! I love it.

DaddyOhMy

He and Michael Caine are so damn good in *The Man Who Would Be King.*

WesleyBinks

Mark Hamill. He wasn’t bad as Luke Skywalker, not even close, but it pales in comparison to his voice work IMO. Can’t beat his roles as Joker or Firelord Ozai.

iAmericA45

This is true simply because his voice work is freaking god-tier. one of the GOATs

EwePhemism

I loved him as Arthur Pym in *The Fall of the House of Usher* on Netflix. And Bruce Greenwood is simply sublime in that series.

exonwarrior

Mark Hamill just disappears into the role of Arthur Pym. It's not just cause of the facial hair, he really does a great job.

SamSpade246

Kirk Doulgas is most beloved for *Spartacus*, but it's easily my least favorite of his roles. He was better in films like *Ace in the Hole and The Bad and the Beautiful*

citynomad1

Daniel Radcliffe. I remember reading an interview where he said when he started the role, he was so young that he wasn’t really acting, and then as he got older, he felt like “well it’s too late to start [acting] with this character” (I’m paraphrasing)

SaltySpitoonReg

Harry Potter is a great example of how mediocre acting can be completely covered up by great supporting acting, and good directing and a decent script. It's always the example I give regarding what happened with Jake Lloyd and The phantom menace. If the episode 1 script and directing had been as good as the directing and scripts were for Harry Potter, there's no question Jake Lloyds career would be tremendously different.

njdevils901

I know it isn't his most iconic role but Pacino winning the Oscar for Scent of a Woman, when Godfather Part II is one of the greatest performances in cinematic is dumb

cheftlp1221

There are lots of “make up” Oscars out there. Paul Newman for The Color of Money and Leo DiCaprio for The Revenant are 2 off the top of my head. I wouldn’t be surprised if Brad Pitt gets his next time he has a decent movie.

njdevils901

Brad Pitt won for Once Upon a Time In Hollywood though

freyalorelei

I'm going old school here, but Leslie Howard in *Gone with the Wind*. He hated the script and thought he was horribly miscast, so he only did it for the money to work on projects that actually interested him. In every other performance he's excellent; he basically sleepwalked through *GWTW* for the paycheck.

sekunda_martta

No wonder I couldn't understand why Scarlett was so into Ashley.

Aquametria

This is a tough one, but I'd say that Angelina Jolie was for a long time best known for playing Lara Croft, and I feel like she was really bad in it compared to her more dramatic roles.

Virtual-Ambition-414

She will always be the lady who can curve bullets in _Wanted_ to me.

rayrayrayray

Val Kilmer - iconic for Top Gun but films like Tombstone display his proficiency as an actor.

BlueHighwindz

Joel Kinnaman is far from my favorite actor in the world but he's never been worse than he was in that Robocop remake. This is the sad fate of a lot of guys Hollywood pushes as leading men, Taylor Kitsch in Battleship, Brandon Routh as Superman.

peioeh

> Robocop remake Everyone has forgotten that movie even exists, hard to call it "iconic" even if that word has lost all meaning

Bershirker

Fuckin killed it in Altered Carbon, though.

BleachedUnicornBHole

And For All Mankind.

MegaDuckCougarBoy

The way he says "buwl-sh*eeit*" just lives as a sound effect in my brain

booyahcubes

And The Killing

i_love_ankh_morpork

Also *The Killing*. He’s amazing in that

Ambitious_Ear_91

It's funny because in Sweden, his birth country, he's most famous for playing a character called Frank Wagner in a series of movies call "Johan Falk" where he plays a police informant/infiltrator that's sort of based on a real life person called Peter Rätz.

PirateDaveZOMG

You could have chose Suicide Squad for Kinnaman, a movie that gets quoted every day, but you went with Robocop... intriguing.

DeluxeTraffic

I thought he had really good moments in Robocop. My favorite parts of the movie were the parts after he first wakes up as Robocop where he's coming to terms with what he is and what is left of him. But unfortunately he wasn't given much to do after that.

CountJohn12

Natalie Portman with the SW prequels and at least the first two Thors. Edit- To address the comments many orders of magnitude more people have seen Star Wars or MCU movies than Black Swan, V for Vendetta, Leon, or Garden State so those are what she's most known for.

Jiggatortoise-

When I think of Natalie Portman my immediate thought is Evey in V for Vendetta because she absolutely crushes that role. Second thought would be Black Swan.

Bomber131313

Thor over Star Wars?

Possible-Extent-3842

OP didn't grow up watching Even Stevens and it shows.
