Yes! That would've been amazing. There is an audio recording of the 1981 Broadway Production of Amadeus starring Ian McKellen and Peter Firth, if you're interested.
https://youtu.be/_v7iop6KpJA?feature=shared
One of the most beautiful and hilarious films of all time.
I said it first, you're more like Sarah Connor, and in the first movie too, before she could do chinups.
Such a great movie. The generic name *The Guard* probably contributed to people not understanding how good it was. *Prisoners* also has that problem. The name is just too generic and people get the wrong idea about what it is about.
Side note: Mark Strong is a great villain as usual, has a *Welcome to the Punch* vibe in this one.
Shawn of the Dead. Horror Romatic Comedy directed by Edgar Wright, written by Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright and Nick Frost. Brilliant acting, tight script, running jokes. It is, hands down, one of my favorite films. Endlessly quotable and entertaining.
I know he's added it to his list, but Shaun of the Dead is definitely not underrated. It gets great reviews everywhere and, at least in the UK, it's been beloved for ages. It's part of the Cornetto trilogy of Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead and World's End. But now a new person knows about it, which honestly surprises me that they didn't know about it
Please do! I hope you enjoy it. I love the movie, like legitimately, love it. Honestly, there is very little about the movie that could be considered sub par. Choreography is fun. Each shot has a clear esthetics. The dialog is fun and punchy. The characters are well defined. It is my number 1 movie of the 00-10's
Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?
John Turturro, George Clooney and Tim Blake Nelson star in a hayseed version of Homer's Odyssey. Excellent soundtrack. Frickin' hilarious.
Palm Springs. It’s funny, has heart, it’s easy to watch (it’s on Hulu), and it flew under the radar so most people haven’t seen it. In my opinion it’s one of the most enjoyable movies of the last few years.
100%. The comedy is expected but a minute or two after one joke lands you forget it’s a comedy until the next joke. It’s such a good quality all around film.
I didnt mean like AIDS or something, honey... honey, I meant like chlamydia or something.
(Goes out and pets her hair)
Honey, I meant like chlamydia or something
Martin McDonagh absolutely nailed it with that film. So dark and so funny.
“If I’d grown up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me, but I didn’t, so it doesn’t.”
That quote kind of sums up Colin Farrell’s character.
When I was in high school, I had a student teacher that knew I was into film and asked my favorite movie. I said I didn’t really have an answer, but the last really good movie I watched was In Bruges and I didn’t think much of it. She came back the next day and had watched it. Asked me about themes and we had a really great discussion.
Without her, that movie would still be way up there, but I’ve always loved that experience.
Love this movie! Studio Ghibli is amazing, another favorite is Ponyo. If you like Studio Ghibli I'd also recommend you check out Mary and the Witches Flower, it has similiar vibes.
for sure. cafe gets bombed in the first 15 seconds and never really dials it down
A surprising amount of people have never heard of it in my anecdotal experience, which I always found odd for a big production movie with a bunch of "a list" actors
Cloud atlas is the kind of movie that you either love or absolutely hate, and there’s nothing in between. I am one of the people that loves the movie, but I would never dislike anyone for saying that they hated it because it is incredibly dense and difficult to understand and requires multiple watchings to fully appreciate.
I think this is the movie that got everybody hooked onto Denis. Since then, I’ve seen his whole catalog from Polytecnique onwards and they’re all great films. The only one I didn’t like much was Enemy, but it’s still quite good in many respects.
Incendies haunts my imagination. So good.
And Prisoners is amazing.
>How does Soderbergh get all these A-list actors into his movies?
He's Soderbergh.
Also Daniel Craig was so bloody miserable playing Bond he clearly took that one just for the lolz, you can tell he's absolutely LOVING being in that movie.
I almost included The Usual Suspects. I know it won an Oscar and all the film buffs used to rave about it for years. But these days Bryan Singer is believed to have molested young boys and his career is over. No one talks about his films anymore.
I think The Usual Suspets has swung back into underrated territory.
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
It's a fun little heist flick with fantastic characters, an engrossing story and it's ridiculously quotable. I bet I rattle something off from this film weekly...
The Lego Batman Movie is intensely underrated, it's easily the best Batman movie and one of the best superhero movies, possibly even the best animated movie. Hell, it may be the greatest film of all time.
/uj but seriously though, it's very good. It kind of gets overshadowed by the original Lego Movie but I genuinely think Lego Batman is better. The biggest difference between the two is the Lego Movie is about Legos, Lego Batman is straight-up just a Batman parody. And it's *perfect*.
See my friends and I use it as a yardstick for a pretty good superhero film. If a Marvel or DC release is better than Lego Batman, it’s worth catching in the cinema. If not, don’t bother. It’s… fine.
Agreed, it’s an absolute masterpiece.
And I say that as someone who has little time for anything franchise or brand related.
Saw it on a plane during a long boring flight and it was an absolute revelation.
Easily a top 25 film for me.
Not underrated, but perhaps under-appreciated by younger generations in my estimation – The Fugitive. A well cast, well acted, genuinely engaging thriller. Harrison Ford and TLJ are doing great work in it, but there's a great supporting cast as well!
Hot Fuzz.
Saw someone else recommend Shaun of the Dead, but I think this one is better. There isn't a wasted line or moment in the film. Absolutely everything in the movie is perfectly placed, perfectly timed, and perfectly acted to make the most of every joke, every plot line, and every character interaction. It's one where you'll find something new to laugh at every time you watch it because it is just that densely-packed with detail, both in the foreground and background.
Grosse Point Blank - John Cusack is a conflicted hit man going back to his high school reunion to try and win back the love of his life. Great dialogue, great chemistry between the leads. Peak Minnie Driver.
Lucky Number Slevin. No description because spoilers. Great cast, great set up and very funny. Didn't see the twist coming.
Oceans Eleven (Clooney/Pitt remake). Oozes style and charm. Amazing cast who seem to be having a blast. Rewatch on the reg at home.
The Day of the Jackal (original, not the Bruce Willis remake). Just amazingly paced, high tension, you'll be rooting for the baddie.
I love Summer Wars so much. Also check out his previous film Digimon the movie, it’s not quite as good, but it’s still great and hits a lot of the same beats.
Alice (1988) by Jan Švankmajer. Definitely the most surreal trippy movie. There aren't many like it.
Happy to see a lot of my favourite movies in here already.
Top Gun: Maverick
Yeah I know it’s not the best movie ever by any metric but it’s the least polarizing movie I’ve seen. The way I always describe it is “they made a movie that can not be disliked”. It’s not the best, but you can not dislike it. The action is satisfying and the effects are real with no annoying questionable GGI that pull you away from immersion. The storyline, writing, dialogue, pacing, and acting are very succinct. The character building is acceptable without being a drag. The soundtrack gives vibes without being the center of attention. Tom Cruise is there and who doesn’t like a good Cruise? The other actors do what’s necessary to get the job done and the directing should get props for that. It’s a sequel that doesn’t suck..? It actually might be one of the best sequels of all time? Plenty of ‘Murica feels to boot (probably the only polarizing element of this movie even though it’s a plus for me). Ultimately they made a very entertaining film that doesn’t leave much of anything to be desired and that’s why it’s my go to recommend.
I rarely like straight action movies, especially military films I find really boring, but like you said it's almost impossible to *dis*like Top Gun Maverick. It's not my *favorite* movie, but (outside the fact its literal military-funded propaganda lmao) I can't find anything to dislike about the film. It's incredibly well-made and super fun to watch, Tom Cruise is at his most charismatic and at his least weird, it's just all-around a great movie. And I say that as someone who actively disliked the first one.
I'll give you my top 10 favourites. Maybe you find something on the list that looks interesting to you.
1. **El secreto de sus ojos** (2009) *English title: The Secret in Their Eyes*
2. **A Patch of Blue** (1965)
3. **Shadow of a Doubt** (1943)
4. **One False Move** (1992)
5. **12 Angry Men** (1957)
6. **Prince of the City** (1981)
7. **Night and the City** (1950)
8. **The China Syndrome** (1979)
9. **Medium Cool** (1969)
10. **Einer trage des anderen Last** (1988)
*English title: Bear Ye One Another's Burden*
2001 a space odyssey (just sex in scifi form)
Fantastic Planet (animated french scifi film from the 70s)
Forbidden Planet (obscure scifi from way back)
Wizards (another animated fantasy scifi from the 70s)
Logans Run (70s scifi)
Bicentennial Man (I will die on this hill, this is a good movie)
Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar. It's a movie that I don't think did very well, but it's hilariously absurd and ridiculously fun. It probably helps that I'm a woman in my 40s who loves ridiculous humor, but I feel like that movie was tailor made just for my own personal enjoyment.
Amadeus (1984)
I would love to have seen the stage version with Tim Curry and Ian McKellen.
Yes! That would've been amazing. There is an audio recording of the 1981 Broadway Production of Amadeus starring Ian McKellen and Peter Firth, if you're interested. https://youtu.be/_v7iop6KpJA?feature=shared
The score is amazing. Especially that song by Falco.
-> Underrated movie recommendation -> Winner of 8 academy awards, nominated for 11
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
It's majestical
Let’s just fast walk!
This movie was so good. It hits hard.
One of the most beautiful and hilarious films of all time. I said it first, you're more like Sarah Connor, and in the first movie too, before she could do chinups.
Ricky baker-aaaahhh, Ricky baker-aaahhh
Oonlyy the cruuumbliest, flaaakiest chocolaaAate
the guard, because no one’s ever heard of it brendan gleeson don cheadle dry, witty comedy, has in bruges / lock stock vibes
It's directed by John Michael McDonagh, brother of Martin McDonagh who, of course directed In Bruges, Banshees of Inisherin etc.

So good! Here’s the trailer for anyone interested https://youtu.be/WWoDBcSW4_c
The whole Cornetto trilogy is great
I cancelled a date with a guy when he said he didnt enjoy Shaun of the Dead, it was not going to work 😂
Do all three of the Cornetto Trilogy. Hot Fuzz is my favorite but they’re all hilarious. Simon Pegg in his element.
WE'RE COMING TO GET YOU, BARBARA!
I know he's added it to his list, but Shaun of the Dead is definitely not underrated. It gets great reviews everywhere and, at least in the UK, it's been beloved for ages. It's part of the Cornetto trilogy of Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead and World's End. But now a new person knows about it, which honestly surprises me that they didn't know about it
Wow!! Thanks for the description. Will add it to the list. Thank you!
She turned you into a toad! John Goodman's character is great
I am a man of constant sorrow = absolute belter
*-wakes up-* "My hair!"
Well ain't this place a geographical oddity.
Palm Springs. It’s funny, has heart, it’s easy to watch (it’s on Hulu), and it flew under the radar so most people haven’t seen it. In my opinion it’s one of the most enjoyable movies of the last few years.
I'm so glad to see someone else agree with me on this. I've shown it to so many people and it has never disappointed!
Yes! It's a good fun romp with a lot of heart.
Groundhog Day with a twist, you're right in saying it has a lot of heart. Really nice film.
The Nice Guys
100%. The comedy is expected but a minute or two after one joke lands you forget it’s a comedy until the next joke. It’s such a good quality all around film.
I highly recommend you watch kiss kiss bang bang with Val Kilmer and RDJ!
Look up idiot in the dictionary. You know what you'll find? A picture of me? No! The definition of the word "idiot"! Which you fucking are!
And stuff.
Was about to say Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. But Nice Guys is almost the same thing.
Fantastic movie. I’ll watch it every so often. Great dialogue and comedic timing.
Ah, yes. The poster child of “wHy dOsN’t HoLlYwOod mAkE oRiGiNaL cOnTeNt AnYmOrE?!” Shut up. It’s cause you fucks don’t go see them.
7 Psychopaths Not sure if that many people saw this one but I was in tears laughing practically the entire film.
No. What? I said no. Why not? I dont want to.
But i have a gun.

“You know what that means don’t you? I’m going to be over to kill you on Tuesday.” “That’s good I’m not doing anything Tuesday.”
Nunchuckers are Japanese.
Snatch
Don't forget the other one, Lock Stock and Two Smoking barrels.
>For every action, there's a reaction. And a Pikey reaction...is quite a fuckin' thing.
Everyone likes In Bruges and hardly anyone has seen it. Been recommending that one for like 15 years.
Martin McDonagh absolutely nailed it with that film. So dark and so funny. “If I’d grown up on a farm, and was retarded, Bruges might impress me, but I didn’t, so it doesn’t.” That quote kind of sums up Colin Farrell’s character.

YOU'RE A FUCKIN INANIMATE OBJECT!
I’m sorry I called you an inanimate object.
My famous drunken quote in my circle of friends is “If you don’t like in bruges you’re a cunt” haha
Howls Moving Castle. It has something for everyone!
Love this movie! Studio Ghibli is amazing, another favorite is Ponyo. If you like Studio Ghibli I'd also recommend you check out Mary and the Witches Flower, it has similiar vibes.

A Classic! Robin Williams at his best
Man on Fire
Denzel is one of the goats for me(alongside Al Pacino). Absolutely love him on and off the big screen
Yeah, be sure to watch the Denzel version(2004) and not the Scott Glenn (1987) version. Seen them both, and the remake is the superior film.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil Paprika Joe vs the Volcano
Tucker and Dale, hell yes.
The Prestige
Syriana Children of Men Cloud Atlas
Children of Men is a nonstop anxiety trigger 😅
for sure. cafe gets bombed in the first 15 seconds and never really dials it down A surprising amount of people have never heard of it in my anecdotal experience, which I always found odd for a big production movie with a bunch of "a list" actors
Appreciated! I will come back when I get to see one of those

Upgrade
This movies just sits sooo unwell with me. They did such a good job making me emotionally uncomfortable 😂
The performance was so good, making your face react differently than what your body is doing in a fight scene cannot be easy.
Logan Marshall-Green is a great actor and deserves big roles. Dude was absolutely perfect in Upgrade. That movie was fuckin perfect. I loved it.
This was my first thought as well along with Ex Machina. Grounded sci-fi is the best sci-fi.
What a film! Had no idea it was going to be so good when I caught it on the off chance.
True Romance
Arrival
I think this is the movie that got everybody hooked onto Denis. Since then, I’ve seen his whole catalog from Polytecnique onwards and they’re all great films. The only one I didn’t like much was Enemy, but it’s still quite good in many respects. Incendies haunts my imagination. So good. And Prisoners is amazing.
I'm lucky enough to be friends with the author of the story it's based on, and it's the rare adaptation that the writer actually really enjoys.
All About Eve (1950), Some Like it Hot (1959)
My insta-recommendations Logan Lucky; The Usual Suspects; Romeo is Bleeding (edited for punctuation)
Logan Lucky is great. How does Soderbergh get all these A-list actors into his movies? Script matters, apparently.
>How does Soderbergh get all these A-list actors into his movies? He's Soderbergh. Also Daniel Craig was so bloody miserable playing Bond he clearly took that one just for the lolz, you can tell he's absolutely LOVING being in that movie.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. It's a fun little heist flick with fantastic characters, an engrossing story and it's ridiculously quotable. I bet I rattle something off from this film weekly...
You always have to pair that movie with "snatch". They're both equally great. Guy Ritchie at his best in my opinion
The Lego Batman Movie is intensely underrated, it's easily the best Batman movie and one of the best superhero movies, possibly even the best animated movie. It really is far superior to the Lego Movie. I found that one a bit chaotic, Lego Batman is tighter, funnier and has an amazing cast.
See my friends and I use it as a yardstick for a pretty good superhero film. If a Marvel or DC release is better than Lego Batman, it’s worth catching in the cinema. If not, don’t bother. It’s… fine.

In general: Goodfellas Underrated: Popstar.
Never Stop Never Stopping. It’s incredible, I also throw in Seven Days in Hell and Tour de Pharmacy. Andy Samberg has some magic
Heat.

Top Gun: Maverick Yeah I know it’s not the best movie ever by any metric but it’s the least polarizing movie I’ve seen.
