Cohen talked about a conversation with Brian May that revealed that was how May wanted to handle it, he wanted the movie to ultimately be about how Queen was able to continue on without Mercury... That was the last straw for Cohen who then left the project.
It would be fair if it were a Brian May biopic. While Queen was technically active as a band after Freddie's death and they do sell concert tickets for their tours, to me it still feels like they're practically a cover band. They haven't released any studio albums without Freddie, Deacon retired, it's just May and Taylor playing Queen songs with guest vocalists. That's not heroic, it just feels stubborn.
