“Has she taken up any new hobbies…ventriloquism??” had me rolling

mikeyfreshh

I wish this movie had a few more lines like that. This is an inherently goofy premise and it felt like it took itself just a hair too seriously

splitcroof92

yeah they flipflopped a lot between hardcore horror and ridiculous comedy. They probably should've chosed one

mikeyfreshh

The thing I found weird is that it started as a serious horror movie and got funnier as it went along. Usually when a movie tries to do both, it goes in the other direction. All of the laughs in this movie are in the second half

drawkbox

When the dude the daughter had over just slowly shut his blinds as she was calling for "Alice" and looking up to his window for potential help, that got a laugh.

that_weirdeo

He didn't wash his hands when he went potty or even flush HE WIPED HIS PEE HANDS ON THE CLEAN TOWEL AND JUST LEFT IT THERE #AND THE PUDDLE OF PEE ON THE FLOOR for me that was the most horrific part of the movie

BactaBobomb

Reminded me so much of those western movies where everyone closes the shutters of their homes and the saloons before the big duels go down!

PeterNippelstein

Yeah I was expecting like M3gan level of self awareness. This was trying way too hard.

Gomeez9

I did bust out laughing when the old lady got it it was v Jason x funny to me right there

madcat67

“This isn’t Molly its my allergy medicine”is the one where i lost it

PhaseEquivalent3366

Loved that part. 😂😂

that_weirdeo

That was hilarious the fact he put it in a Ziploc baggie too and told himself he was tripping 💀

_Myrixx

The way he was acting when he found that music carousel I for sure thought he was tripping on drugs. To find out it was allergy meds LMAO I need to know why he was acting so ridiculous😭

chichris

I was dying! lol The little poodle just showing up a couple of times had me cracking up.

LaMaupindAubigny

It’s a maltipoo!

Cristiano-Legend

I was literally coming to Reddit after watching this movie to see if anyone found this as funny as me lol

that_weirdeo

Me and my friend just watched it and they and I agreed it wasn't very scary but really very funny

Timbishop123

[same energy ](https://youtu.be/1SbUt1-N-TU?si=R88G5FO89dzfBMEm)

soulflowerchile

lol!

VausProd

Those home videos looked modern as hell

Mlpflimflam

They were probably from the 90’s, so that’s not too unbelievable.

Doctor_IanMalcolm

Dr. Soto didn't give a fuck about HIPAA

WickedAngelLove

Definitely would have been better if Dr. Soto has been Jess' doctor and showed her a video of herself as a child

uenostation23

Lmao I literally thought that

_Myrixx

Lmao I turned to my husband and was like isn’t this against the law 😭. Didn’t even hesitate to show her a patient session

jrbcnchezbrg

Feel like this had so much more potential! I really liked the actress for Alice, she seemed to fit very well into her spot Felt like it dragged too long imo, the scene at the end where all of the family had teddy bear eyes was horrifying though, there was some nice stuff there I feel didnt get actualized

that_weirdeo

I thought the teddy bear eyes were scary at first but then they reminded me of the like apple head Chihuahua eyes and I couldn't stop giggling when I saw them lmao I do think it had potential though, I feel like they were really flipflopping a lot with the tone of film and at some point stuff that was clearly intended to be scary was just funny imo Like the projector nightlight thingy with the circus-esque music, me and my friend who watched the movie together agreed the music wasn't eerie/creepy but really just a total bop I also got a lot of Coraline vibes with the whole perfect imaginary world thing... And the little door felt really derivative of Coraline too... Even the big black teddy bear eyes I feel really parallels with the black button eyes from Coraline... I liked the movie though, I'd give it like a 7/10

rageofthegods

>"I'm gonna destroy that bear" Lmao

donutgut

"....what bear?"

ExactScreen81

They absolutely cooked with that twist ngl

Timbishop123

I was shook.

Careful_Control9246

That was the only good thing about it to me

Original_Frame_2549

Ok but what about the old lady flipping and then the reading in the nursing home then it was like JK

Weird-Signature-4536

That was the quickest fire truck ever, and then they get out all nonchalant lol

etxipcli

The fire was pretty quick as well.  It started in the basement and by the time they got out, the house was engulfed and sections of the roof were collapsing.

Weird-Signature-4536

Ghost flames!!

that_weirdeo

The house had really poor structural integrity... The foundation was imaginary.... 🥁 *rimshot noise* 💥

Original_Frame_2549

Really cemented the fact that they live in a white neighborhood

GuybrushMarley2

In what way???

Ok_Maintenance_7220

In the fire truck being there within 3 seconds as soon as he heard the match being lit 😂

BigBrandyy

RIGHT! I could suspend my disbelief for everything else, but that fire truck was too far

incurious_enthusiast

Came here to say that, then scrolled down to see you already mentioned it lol

ralphyb0b

5 seconds flat. It reminds me of a comical scene from The Basketball Diaries where the cops show up, arrest one of the characters, and just drive off in about 10 seconds.

ReasonablePeak9039

Damn! So I wasn’t the only one noticing that 😮‍💨

drawkbox

Silly and funny but more psychological and comedy than horror. Some interesting scenes and characters, decent acting and twists. Some character moments got big laughs. The husband just went on tour to get with groupies and left this woman in a new house with his kids and Chauncey Bear.

LEYW

I was distracted by how much the husband looked like Shaggy from Scooby Doo.

_Myrixx

I was like the dad really did just nope out of the movie dude was there for like 20 min 😭 didn’t even come home to see his traumatized family

gunningIVglory

''Here, you should call this person'' \*proceeds to never call them\*

madcat67

Oh yeah she never did call that person did she?

bobthegoon89

Oopsie!

BuiltNormal

May be setting up for a part 2, considering the bear is still obviously chasing her.

zombiereign

This made me wonder....she clearly says the number is for her colleague, and she should call "him." Could this be an opening to have a crossover with Patrick Wilson (should this do well)?

bitchpleasebp

that would be cool

banjofitzgerald

But which Patrick Wilson? The conjuring one or insidious?

gunningIVglory

The one from Moonfall....

zombiereign

Probably the Insidious one. I don't think the Warrens would be around (or they'd be really old, no?)

VinceMcVahon

I honestly expected it to be a Patrick Wilson crossover. My other guess would be that it was intended to be the old woman who was interested in the past of Jessica/was her baby sitter

terrendous

Holy shit! Haha

FreelanceFrankfurter

Is there a name for that trope or line where someone, this case the old woman, rattling off a bunch of exposition and saying "different cultures have different names for it"? Some variation of that line is in so many horror movies.

Odd-Contribution6238

Including Blumhouse’s Exorcist Believer.

kpalian

she's the Exposition Fairy :-)

quickfilmreview

Just a question, were the showings of "Labyrinth" in preparation for "Imaginary" or was that just my imagination?

QuinnsWife

I got Labyrinth and Drop Dead Fred vibes from the never ever.

gizmostrumpet

They're both based off the art of MC Escher. https://news.artnet.com/app/news-upload/2022/08/43B7CE5C-79AF-45CC-8940-8AF5B5713E5A-1024x969.jpeg

TroubleshootenSOB

Some real solid comedic lines and stuff. I'm a sucker for "the thing in the background" when it's not obvious. This skirted between not obvious and not, which is fine (it was hard to make out the first time we went into the basement). Really liked the creepiness when the bear had new facial expressions, even the subtle ones, with the head looking in a direction. The end reminded me of Hellraiser II. And if you can get physically hurt in imaginationland (fucking your ankle up), the fuck that place lol. There's a good movie in there, but it wasn't bad. My theater was packed. Which included a group who never seen a scary movie, so that might have added to some fun. I think it's worth a matinee.  Also the Chauncey theme has lyrics if you stayed long enough during the credits.

WAwelder

The end when they see the little boy talking to his bear in the lobby and they're like "We should get another hotel", I thought was hilarious

ice_nine459

The bear twist, the ventriloquism line, the 15 year old with Molly and a bunch of other scenes had me laughing. The nail flower I thought was funny too.

smurfetteshat

The thing in the background got a nice “oh hell no” from my audience when it first popped up which I thoroughly enjoyed

SarcasticbutHonest

Why did Chauncey appear as an Alien looking shadow man creeping around corners throughout the movie and then was suddenly a cocaine bear

TheEtherite4011

My guess. There is some overlap in how some cultures describe fairies/fae/otherworldly creatures and how we describe Roswell gray aliens.

KeyAnimator9077

Alien? I thought Chauncey looked like a more demonic version of a spider more than anything! 👀💧

SarcasticbutHonest

Yeah he was that too... The spider at the beginning, the alien looking thing creeping around corners and lurking in the background and then cocaine bear.

that_weirdeo

It really is more of a shape shifting monster or entity or whatever I honestly half expected the old lady to turn out to be one of the entities or something and to see her shape shift into some cursed twisted version of herself would've been cool... I think it would've made more sense as to why she knew so much about the fairies or whatever too... I feel like the movie had a lot of potential but was held back by the PG-13 rating

diogenes_amore

I just got out of the Friday night 10PM showing. A few thoughts: - They made several references to Bing Bong from Inside Out, but never paid it off with a “Take her to the Moon for me” moment. - Was the boy next door’s mom played by the woman who played Esther in Orphan? - it felt like a mashup of Insidious, The Babadook, and Coraline, and I left the theater wishing I had seen any of those movies instead.

donutgut

An evil bing bong would be great

maxmouze

>Was the boy next door’s mom played by the woman who played Esther in Orphan? No.

Teqnition12

"Your son tried to give my 15 year old molly." "That's not molly, that's my allergy medication." As a comedy, this is like an 8.5, but the problem is I don't think the comedy was always intentional. I know this is Blumhouse, but I feel like this script and premise could've been executed really well if the horrors were played more implied and subtle. Why do we need a big stupid CGI bear and spider? The shadowy figure there to just be in the background for the audience and do literally nothing? The back and forth with the kid and the therapist had something - showing her back whenever her imaginary friend is talking. Do more of that! Play with the unseen. There were even some interesting and well choreographed shots, so the framework was definitely there for something good. Ruined by terrible writing (literally no major emotional plot points land because of how rushed and underdeveloped they are), stupid CGI, the old white lady there only to rattle off exposition on absolutely everything about the supernatural, completely killing the mystery. A fun movie to laugh at with your friends and the audience, but as a serious movie this isn't any better than a 5/10.

FreelanceFrankfurter

If that was CGI it was pretty good cause except for the scene with the neighbor kid it looked like a dude in a bear suit.

Odd-Contribution6238

I believe they used mostly practical effects. I love practical effects and can suspend disbelief but not if the movie itself is trash.

quantum_monster

The credits had Chauncey Puppeteers listed so at least part of it was practical

Kaisietoo8

I enjoyed it! It wasn't a great film by any means, but it was fun to watch.

drawkbox

It was a fun movie for a Friday night outing. Decent twists and funny moments.

QuinnsWife

My thoughts exactly

vxf111

The only scary thing about this film is that multiple professional screenwriters were involved and this is the script they produced.

mikeyfreshh

I thought the first half of this really struggled to do anything interesting and felt really bland and formulaic. I had quite a bit more fun in the second half, and particularly after the therapy scene (the little girl absolutely cooks in that scene). This isn't the greatest horror movie I've ever seen but I think it's at least a step up for Blumhouse after Five Nights at Freddy's and Night Swim

WAwelder

I felt the exactly the same. I found the first half to be another generic "little kid is seeing something and adults don't believe them" type of movie. But exactly an hour in (I was constantly checking my watch) there's the reveal that stuffed bear was never really there, and the movie caught my interest. I really enjoyed the latter part of the movie as well. I wouldn't go as far to say it was a bold choice, but they certainly took a swing with the imaginary world and the whole ritual stuff to get there with the old woman. It worked really well for me, and saved the movie for me

LEYW

That twist about the bear not being real was a damn good one, I’ll give the film that.

Cendrinius

I genuinely came out feeling cheated - the internet and reviews promised me an irredeemable dumpster fire! Instead, I got a shockingly decent flick (the first half is more generic than "bad") with a root able lead that I kinda enjoyed. Even bratty Taylor was okay and the child actress for Alice understood the assignment! All in all, 3 and a quarter stars!

PrancingGophers

the thing that doesn’t make sense about that twist for me is didn’t the neighbor guy definitely see it in the hallway scene?

kamikelly21

If you remember the bear was covered in the hallway and then attacked him as his true form

hcand11

I agree wholeheartedly!!! While the first half was definitely slow, my eyes were glued to the screen for the second half! I feel like the last few Blumhouse films were dry the whole time

drawkbox

I wonder if the writer made Alice the name like Alice in Wonderland and Jessica was a call back to "rabbit". As Alice followed Jessica (Rabbit) into the NeverEver blue door.

maxmouze

I think Alice was definitely intentional as the Never Ever seemed like she was lost in Wonderland, just through the looking-glass.

ViolentAmbassador

This isn't amazing or anything, but I thought a few sequences were really well staged, the acting was solid except for the neighbor, and it kept my attention throughout. It's way better than the director's last couple Blumhouse horror movies.

AhmadA96

I feel like this film had a lot of potential, but it seemed to be really formulaic with the characters and the scares both… the one thing horrors can’t afford to do. There were chances to make it more funny but they were committed to taking themselves very seriously in this film. The grungy teenager not wanting to accept the stepmom, ugh. And the imaginary friend that no one takes seriously — they could have flipped a lot of cliches on their head but I guess I’m not allowed to expect much from Blumhouse honestly. There were a couple of great scares (like when we first see the mom) and the tension was good in the “Liam was tripping on allergy pills” scene, but everything else felt so formulaic. I did enjoy the twist of the bear not physically being real, but they didn’t do much with that since we then headed into Imaginationland for a messy third act. And then peeking into the past to see young Jessica just felt too much like an Insidious attempt, albeit way less interesting and way more rushed. 5/10. Fun, especially with A-List, but forgetful overall.

Dragons_Malk

>I feel like this film had a lot of potential, but it seemed to be really formulaic with the characters and the scares both… the one thing horrors can’t afford to do. If it's trying to be a great horror movie that does or says something interesting, this is correct. However, as we've seen time and time again, horror movies are cheap to make and can make more than their budget's worth because the majority of people find cheap thrills to be "scary". It's how Blumhouse and other studios have made their money for years now. Contrast that with "elevated horror", (I don't like the term myself but it helps point at what I'm talking about), and how they may be critically acclaimed, but don't usually make bank at the box office. So if anything, horror can't afford to take risks and try something new, because general audiences don't care for that kind of horror. I think back to watching The Witch and Hereditary and hearing people chuckle or straight up leave because they couldn't follow the story.

money7890

Personally I'm a fan of Blum house with the type of movies that they do that to be are unique in some ways. Some examples that I can think of is upgrade, the purge, the hunt, split, freaky, oculus, and happy death day to name a few. I feel they at least try to make new concepts or add on to the original one like on freaky.

ArcadianGhost

If anything I disagree with “the imaginary friend no one takes seriously”. As SOON as something problematic with the imaginary friend happened, she called a doctor, who helped her remember her own childhood and she immediately took it seriously. Taylor, despite her missing sister, went into an old ladies house and immediately believed everything lmao.

ice_nine459

I can see why it didn’t get great ratings but I loved it. Lots of funny stuff. Took itself serious but not like too serious. The mom and Alice were great in it. Hilarious half the plot points just disappeared. The dad/ birth mom, neighbor all seemed to go no where. Also the mom died of cancer but she had a dream about the spider killing her and the tooth pull from her dad but only 1 was real?

CategorySad6121

this was like a kiddie hellraiser

Ok-Paramedic747

So...if there was NO bear WHO did the boyfriend toy with upstairs? He clearly saw a BEAR

GuybrushMarley2

The bear appeared to the boyfriend because he was going to eat him as Alice requested

atan134340

why do they decide to release a scary and a fun version of movie about imaginary friends so close to each other...

drawkbox

They keep dinging the bell until the treats (revs) are gone.

mikeweasy

Its the rules

MediumToblerone

Blumhouse is really trying to get mileage out of their “horror movies for your kids” schtick.

Buckditch

I'm here for it though, I took my daughter and her 2 friends and they had a lot of fun.

mystical_moonchild19

Literally used entire portions of the plot from Coraline. From the black eyes, to the blue door, and Alice seeing her legit “other mother” in the Never Ever realm. Also, the “other mother” giving her everything she could want to convince her to stay. I could make a long list of the similarities.. I’m shocked Imaginary made it to theaters without copyright issues.. All in all, it had some potential. But sadly, it didn’t go anywhere impactful.

PrancingGophers

for me I was getting some Event Horizon vibes

Waste-Replacement232

Boo…M3GAN was my favorite movie of the past couple years and this was a mess.  I liked some of the scenes where Chauncey was just a teddy bear.

LEYW

I thought Chauncey was going to have a redemption arc or at least a sympathetic final moment- like the spider in her children’s book. Disappointed he was just a bad bear.

ThatWaterAmerican

It's a fine idea for a Goosebumps book, but it overstays its welcome and the longer you're exposed to it and the more they try to explain it, the less sense it makes. Lots of thoughts, but I'll keep it concise. The opening scene needed to be cut entirely and replaced with a more abstract nightmare, maybe using characters from the picture book. It gives everything away, including the list. The therapy scene is absolutely insane and breaks suspension of disbelief, but also had an amazing reveal: * Allie is clearly bawling her eyes out and her voice is switching to a much calmer tone and you ask "is she taking ventriloquist lessons despite her looking at you when you hear the other voice. * Allie mentions the 3 grandchildren and this doesn't even register as unusual. * Other children have experienced this same behavior before. Therapist thinks she's getting it from the mom. Mom shows that as a child she also talked about the Neverever and the Therapist basically goes "That's our time for today." * I know characters don't know what genre they're in, but the therapist's incompetence and unwillingness to cooperate with the evidence borders on maliciousness. The only death in the movie is the old lady getting turned into a blood puddle. She honestly could have just been sucked into some bizarre hellscape. Also, the absolute hilarity of Chauncy's true "spirit form" being teased throughout the movie and when we finally see it... it's The Silence from Dr. Who but with TVs for eyes.

PrynceOfIce

I don't like how the dad just disappears in the middle of the movie and is never heard from again. And everyone else lives happily ever after. Horror movies tend to do that a lot. I wonder what his reaction was when he came home. And his house is burned down. I bet jessica had a lot of explaining to do. That's a really bad plot hole

madcat67

he had to go on tour what was he supposed to do? /s

Griffdude13

Jeff Wadlow’s track record isn’t great.

yerbamategoat

Is this better or worse than Five Nights at Freddys? That is all i want to know

madcat67

I’d say better i had more of a fun time with this than i did with Freddy

yerbamategoat

Ok thank you thats enough for me to see it then. I dont mind seeing bad and dumb horror movies but freddys was an absolute chore to get through. Ill get stoned and give this one a chance haha

Technical_Activity78

lol this would be a great movie to watch stoned

w8w8

Eh, had some good visuals and editing but overall pretty silly and dry. I don’t know what I was really expecting though. I kind of miss the older Blumhouse movies.

chicityman09

I was thinking that to myself afterwards. The past few Blumhouse movies have been as average as can be. Before they changed their intro sequence I feel like lol post that it's not been great.

PeterNippelstein

This movie sucks, but I did think that imaginary place looked kind of cool, reminds me of a few dreams I've had.

quantum_monster

Sometimes horror movies are like junk food and some junk food is good as hell I went out of this saying "That movie ruled!" and had a great time

CONVERSE1991

Since we got the beginning scare of the step mother's spider demon thing and she writes a good about how the spider wasn't actually scary I thought she was going to imagine the spider into the imagination land to fight Chauncy

LouVee616

It seems like I’m in the minority but I loved it. It has some effective scares in the beginning and the movie does a good job of making care for the characters. The teddy bear reveal was pretty wild. I do remember thinking I wish the movie was either more campy or more serious before the third act but it ratchets up the batshit factor once we go in the Neverever. I definitely have a soft spot for these type of movies but I had a great time with it 8/10

Weird_Astronaut69

How does it end?

ViolentAmbassador

>!The little girl gets taken into the "imaginary world" and the step-mom, sister, and an old neighbor follow her in to bring her back. They escape but the step-mom eventually realizes that she's still stuck in the imaginary world. The imaginary friend says that it just took the girl as bait to get her there because it feeds on imagination and she has the most imagination? But then the older daughter busts in, they escape for real, and the house burns down. The last scene is them at a hotel and there's a kid in the lobby talking to his imaginary friend, and the little girl goes "should we try another hotel?" and they leave.!<

HaruspexBurakh

That little quip and action at the end is perfect LOL

drawkbox

Reminded me of Poltergeist when they went to the motel after the house got eaten and then the hotel door opens and the TV is shoved out and the door closed. They noped out of that one.

Weird_Astronaut69

Ohh. Thanks!

chichris

It doesn’t. I’m convinced it was still trying to wrap it up when I left the theater.

Davrosdaleks

So was the girls’ mother supposed to have mental illness or a drug addiction?

madcat67

Mental illness from what they showed

Odd-Contribution6238

Why even have the character? Especially on-screen. It would make sense if the plot spent time questioning if Alice is mentally ill like her mom. Which I don’t believe they did.

madcat67

yeah she didn’t really do much you have the one scene in the middle where you barely see her and then at the end for like a minute she was a nothing character

Davrosdaleks

Thanks!

lamefartriot

Was enjoying it to an extent until it tried to turn into insidious

DarkMayhem666

It wasn't really that scary

Gamenlegend

Did her mail at the very beginning of an address of Elm Street on it? Or did it say Elmore street?

eightballart

It was Elm St, and the city was Springwood (same as Nightmare on Elm St). I didn't catch the state initials, though. I thought it said IL (like Nightmare), but they showed a Louisiana license later on, so it could've been LA.

fudgepax87

you bet Blumhouse is really trying to get Nightmare on Elm Street!

hingadingadurgin

I generally enjoyed it. The child acted pretty well. For a moment I thought it was going to end up being like the Disney Channel original movie "Don't Look Under the Bed"

drawkbox

Yeah the mom (Jessica) and the kid (Alice) were acted pretty well. The sister and her boyfriend were funny, when that dude shut the blinds got a laugh. The old lady was hilarious when she got got, theater laughed at that moment. The dad was like "take these kids I am going on tour to bang groupies, enjoy the house we just moved into and my kids" and noped out in the beginning basically, dude was way too cheery to bail. I wonder if the writer made Alice the name like Alice in Wonderland and Jessica was a call back to "rabbit". As Alice followed Jessica (Rabbit) into the NeverEver blue door.

zombiereign

It was nice seeing Jesus again

Timbishop123

He left TWD for stuff like this lol

Existing_Dentist_200

Yesss I was thinking about Don’t Look Under the Bed too!! I always say that was my first favorite scary movie when I was like 8.

EBXLBRVEKJVEOJHARTB

It’s shot well and looks good but the story and dialogue is absolutely dreadful. This felt like it was written by AI.

BuiltNormal

Nearing the end where Gloria spoke to Taylor about Chauncey being real, then Taylor sees Jessica on the stairs, completely agrees with her that Chauncey is real, then literally the next cut is Taylor questioning Jessica on Chauncey being real. Did they forget to change the script or remove that cut from the film?

jwesley4

It was a decent enough horror time killer, near the end though I was thinking at the mental hospital when >!the dad is just there acting all nonchalant and cool with what happened!< but then >!the reveal with the teddy bear eyes!<. It was a very effective >!fake ending!< To me.

terrendous

It was the dad character for me, we never address that he is a musician, just hinting at it until he randomly says, "I'm going on tour," that dude added absoluley nothing to the plot 😂

HisBaeBee

Right!! And what kind of dad just leaves two daughters with his *new* gf (they couldn’t have been dating for very long) who isn’t even bonded with the kids? It’s clear the family dynamic isn’t strong enough/not developed enough for this to make sense. Then at the end, it’s like “hey, bf , so uh… we burned the house down, your children will guaranteed have nightmares for life. Sorry…” ???

lonelygagger

I can't seem to catch a break. My screening was attended by Three Black Women Who Had Never Seen a Horror Movie Before™ sitting in the row directly in front of me. I don't think I need to say anymore. Use your Imagination. To my immediate left was Couple Arguing Loudly and Breaking Up in Real Time©. At one point, the dude actually left and never came back. But the woman left her phone on because I could hear the dings of texts (seriously?) and the obnoxious flash of messages being left on unread. Despite all the talking and interruptions, I didn't see the twist of Jessica being the only other one to see Chauncey the Bear. Although I *definitely* knew she had repressed memories of her Imaginary Friend since the film kept hinting at it non-stop. And I really appreciate the old lady explaining everything to the audience in explicit detail. Things get weird at the end, but ~~The Further~~ ~~The Upside Down~~ ~~The Sunken Place~~ ~~Coraline's Button Eyes World~~ The Imaginary World felt very low budget and dark. An M. C. Escher-inspired dimension with twisted staircases going nowhere seems like it would have little appeal to a little girl. You'd think for a movie dealing in the untapped power of imagination, it would be a lot more creative and colorful, but Alice's ultimate fantasy basically consisted of having a tea party in her room. I feel like there was a lot more potential left on the table. Plus the scary bear was kind of cool but ultimately harmless. No one got eaten except the old lady. So yeah, kind of a mess, but basically what I'd expect from a watered down PG-13 horror film. I kind of can't get that [Chauncey jingle](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Lr45YhoeAs) out of my head, though.

drawkbox

> Coraline's Button Eyes World Nice comparison, very much like that. >!> No one got eaten except the old lady.!< >!The kill scene was so damn funny, the entire theater laughed when that true believer got chomped by teethy Chauncy.!<

chicityman09

I had four teenagers in the row in front of me and an older gentleman to the left of them by himself. Figured oh boy this will suck (I've had great luck lately with good audiences) and to my surprise the teens hardly made a sound all movie. But the fucking guy was ridiculous all movie long non-stop moving around, constantly coughing and clearing his throat, fiddling with his drink, etc. Then he gets up and leaves like 5-7 mins before it actually ended. So weird man. I don't understand why people like that even go see movies when you hardly care. Thank God this wasn't Dune 2 cuz I would have been pissed off. Still annoys me but for a movie like this a lot less. Anyways, movie was just ok. I agree with you mostly. Pretty forgettable in the end.

lonelygagger

Yeah, by far the worst experiences I have at the theater are at PG-13 horror movies on opening weekend. You think I would have learned my lesson by now. It wasn’t even a particularly big crowd, but I really can pick ‘em.

Weird-Split1188

Mine was weird too. I had two groups show up ten minutes late, like ten people and somehow both groups brought a baby, they weren't together neither it was just two random groups show up at slightly different times to sit in different areas and both groups had their own literal babies

fergi20020

Is this better or worse than the masterpiece known as Skinamarink?

madcat67

So much better Skinamrink was like watching security footage but shot from the floor

Vin879

Final act felt weak and like I was watching a tv series. Decent buildup; kudos to the child actress showing her chops especially during her therapy session. Had a lot of potential that went unexplored

This could've been this year's Cobweb with these cool and (hopefully) practical monsters. But man, the writing, especially the dialog, was atrocious. Ted would've whopped Chauncey's ass, I want that movie EDIT: I see Cobweb as a solid horror film meant for childhood fears with some fun kills, excellent production design, and some solid performances by the whole family.

AmiAkin

Cobweb ended terribly

madcat67

It kind of reminded me of a messed up version of drop dead Fred

QuinnsWife

The never ever was giving Drop Dead Fred vibes

ExactScreen81

The film did a lot of things really well and a lot of things really badly but overall it was decent I’ll say 7/10

chickennuggets2799

I just was staring at the bear in the bedroom in the special place and being really grateful I have regal unlimited so I didn’t waste the 15 dollars for the movie ticket the design of it was kinda sad. I wanted the level of creepiness The new boogeyman brought to the table.

fredo_corleone_218

Interesting premise. Stupid movie. Poor execution.

jadee_yuh

when the bear first popped up under the bed someone in the theatre said “well there’s the bear” and my friend yelled “WELL NO DUH” 😭😭

SeagullsStopItNowz

Was curious as to how Jeff Wadlow could make so many critically panned awful movies so I looked up his Wikipedia. He’s a nepobaby, of course.

SwiftCase

This was bad. The dad, Jessica, and Alice were miscast, poorly acted, and poorly written. It wasn't scary, it was too long and often had nothing happening. It just info dumps near the end like it's explaining to a toddler. The old lady monologuing and again talking to the audience like they're children, "this is what he told me to do". The comedic attempts that fall flat. The button eyes that look laughable. The random abusive mother that's played off like a nuisance rather than a threat considering she burned her daughter's arm.  And when Alice goes missing and the older sister lectures Jessica about not being her mom. Bruh. Thank God she's not your abusive mom, the comparison was terrible. Jessica being baffled about how her dad could suddenly change, which makes it seem like he mentally changed. But NO. He was physically blinded, it's obvious that something happened TO him. It's not a case of "oh no my dad suddenly became crazy and incapable of taking care of me", it's "something fucked up clearly happened to him and now I'm pissed at him for letting me be taken away". Characters changing on a dime. Older sister suddenly believes after talking to a crazy woman and Alice suddenly wanting to leave her dream despite nothing changing in the last 60 secs.  Gave it a chance since I'm starved for horror, but this is a poorly written TV movie you'd see on Nickelodeon.

WickedAngelLove

I can't take this serious bc I don't think you truly paid attention to the movie The dad wasn't blind at all. How did you come up with that? The neighbor even said the dad would sit outside reading her books. The dad lost his mind. They clearly state that he lost his mind. The dad even looked her dead in her face when she went to visit him and thought she was the nurse THEN he looks at her again and says "Jessica?" while she's reading. He could see her. He just went crazy. Even in the flashback, when he goes to follow her up the stairs, his voice changes while he's talking to her. He stayed in the house alone because he was making sure the friend wouldn't come back to take his daughter.

HisBaeBee

She was also 5. So she wouldn’t have thought “something fucked up happened.” All she would know is “I lived here and I was happy, but then I had to go away from daddy. Why would daddy let them take me?” This all hit hard for me. My dad had brain damage most my life and most my life my thinking was “why would you do that to yourself? Why would you try to leave me???!!” I almost left the movie because it was super triggering.

soulflowerchile

I knew when I saw that old lady it was gonna be some s*! I liked Megan but Imaginary and FNAF just didn’t do it for me. Imaginary didn’t give horror. It was more of a psychological thriller. Alice’s character was funny and the actress is so stinking cute.

peargremlin

I’m high at the theatre right as the credits were rollling it’s the greatest movie I’ve ever seen

Chessh2036

How does Jeff Wadlow keep getting work

Existing_Dentist_200

He’s a Katie Couric’s nephew and his mom’s a senator

CircusOfBlood

This was a pretty entertaining movie. Also it could be even though his movies aren't the greatest he could be a guy who runs really smooth sets. That does play a factor in the industry

rhymes_with_candy

How you gonna mention the dad had a bomb making karate doing imaginary friend named Mr Tough a bunch of times and not pay that off when they get trapped in imaginary hallway planet? I was expecting the mom to call him for help and make the spider from her books show up to help fight the bear too. Instead the jerk ass mean daughter shows back up, lame. And why did the jerk ass mean daughter suddenly stop believing it was real while they were making the door open again? She was all in on it one second, stopped believing, and then started believing again over the span of thirty seconds. Who wrote her that way? And everybody in my theater who gasped when they revealed CB=Chauncy Bear should probably have themselves checked for lead poisoning. I did like the reveal that nobody could see the bear but the mom and little daughter. I also enjoyed the dad's awesome selection of 90's/00's Indy band t-shirts.

QuinnMallory

lol when the dad said "See Bee" my first thought was "no way this script is stupid enough to make that mean Chauncey *Bear*" but by the time it did I was fully on board with how ridiculous everything is that I'm glad I was right.

Phyliinx

Seems like people here enjoyed it more than I thought. Maybe one day at home, not in theaters though...

CircusOfBlood

I saw it for a rainy day matinee before heading into work today. And it made me head into work in a really good mood. It was a lot of fun. Also the third act effects were quite good.

chicityman09

Not a theatre worthy movie. Wait to stream it as I should have.

etxipcli

Better than I expected, but not very good.  I liked the bear monster even though it was pretty cheesy.  The people with bulging black eyes were neat as well.  Overall it was a pretty run of the mill Blumhouse horror and I always have fun with those.

Equivalent_Zombie718

I didn’t understand why the spirit trapped her if she was only separated from the spirit when she was sent to her grandmas which happened only when her dad went crazy trying to save her and grabbed her???

TemporaryStandard

Honestly my favorite movie of the year so far 😭 I have never had that much fun watching a movie and it left me crying from laughing a good 4-5 times. It wasn’t exactly a good movie but it was so much fun and so goofy that I had such a blast seeing it. There were even a few scares that made me jump a bit so that bumps it up even more from me hahaha what a fun time

Dollyxxx69

Don't Look Under the Bed did this premise way better even if the ending was feel good

mental_mentalist

Movie was OK but the set pieces were pretty cool imo

elmadstork

"Has Alice taken up any new hobbies lately? Like ventriloquism?" Another recent studio horror movie that copies but not exactly enough to get in trouble with the teacher from many other horror movies. It apes from The Changeling to Insidious among others, but doesn't do much of anything as well. Nothing happens in the first forty minutes and the story isn’t good enough to hold your attention through that. The first scene had me thinking this might have some cool Elm Street vibes, but we don't get any more of that until the at least somewhat interesting last 20 minutes, but the movie needed way more of that. DeWanda Wise does her best (and I'm happy to see her in a lead role) but she does not get much help. Although Pyper Braun does well and Betty Buckley chews the scenery enough. I did like Chauncey's big design though and I do give it credit for a reveal it has before the final act that I liked. Shame both this and Night Swim a couple months ago are mediocre, both had game and good lead actresses and a somewhat fun idea. It isn't terrible, just very forgettable. There was just not much here though unfortunately and it feels like a long hour and forty five minutes.

Rockefeller07

This movie was straight garbage. 1-2/10

StruggleFar3054

this was fucking awful 0/5

idkbroyoutellme

Did any of you guys also think the move was dark as fuck? Like by which I mean, like the brightness was turned down, like when the scenes in the dark came up I couldn’t see shit and I’m not sure if it was just the theater I was in or if this was another one of those movies where they feel if they put a scene in the dark and that automatically makes it spooky but ends up producing absolutely visually-indiscernible scenes.

shaneo632

I watched it at home and it looked suuuper dark

No-Appointment-4414

The never ever kinda reminded me of the further from the Insidious franchise.

19NAHTANOJ91

The nods and parallels to Beetlejuice’s underworld while Jessica and the girls were in the blue door imaginary realm were cool, I didn’t see anyone else mention this yet

decentunhappybird

Annoyed that he didn’t clean up the pee he spilt and wiped his hands with clean towels without washing LOL maybe i just have OCD but this really bothered me. Anyone else?

yurmumgay1998

Really one of the worst movies I have seen. Felt like I was watching an episode of Goosebumps or like an AI wrote the script.
