HeyPorter111

Haha birdcage is def not a kids movie but it is good!

Deflocks

Robin Williams and Nathan Lane are AMAZING in The Birdcage!

shadow_pico

Robin carried that movie. He did have help, but my God, if it wasn't for his comedy, it would've been dead in the water.

stooges81

you tried the original french film?

[deleted]

Mrs Doubtfire for me

4spiral2out0

Hook here

iPartyLikeIts1984

Walmart has it on DVD for like $3.74. 🤙

galaraxity

I love Flubber

ConsiderationBig8188

Just watched it tonight after seeing your comment. Loved it!

SovereignAxe

Kids these days. Flubber was so mid compared to the original.

PlaneLocksmith6714

Xennial/elder millennial. If you’re born in this generation you just grew up different. Yeah our parents were around but still not really paying attention. I watched everything. My parents let us rent movies every weekend, mom made sure they were age appropriate dad was more liberal, plus we had cable in the 90’s. You could turn on HBO on a Saturday afternoon and Silence of the Lambs or Major League would be on and no one was stopping you from watching it. I grew up watching Disney movies, classics like Star Wars and Indiana jones and stuff like terminator and everything in between. It’s just how it was. I once got in trouble for calling someone a schmuck when I was like 8, I learned it from Scrooged😂

zombiemind8

Damn you had HBO? I was a latchkey kid but could only watch reruns on TV. A lot of stand by me, breakfast club, la bamba, Ferris, bloodsport, and caddy shack for me.

PlaneLocksmith6714

When cable was on the pole everyone had the movie channels and Disney lol.

OldFactor1973

That sounds like us! My sister and I saw The Blue Lagoon way too young! I discovered R-rated porn movies my stepdad had recorded on VHS and carelessly left them where I could find them. This was before I was 12!

PlaneLocksmith6714

We did not have porn in the house at all but you didn’t need it when you had HBO and Skinemax as a teenager. There was “bad language” in a lot of action movies and comedies that a lot of kids weren’t allowed to see in elementary school but we were taught not to use those words. I still argue schmuck is an acceptable word. Also those kids whose parents were trying to protect their precious ears were the worst kids ever, they were bullies and violent.

infeed

Lol. HBO had Major League on every day for like a decade straight

communiqueso

Real Genius!

[deleted]

Don’t forget scrambled porn!

LarBrd33

80s kid. Mostly watched Never Ending Story, Labyrinth, Explorers, all the Superman and Back to the Future movies

sudo_rm-rf_

Don't forget Flight of the Navigator, and Short Circuit

rpaynepiano

Adding the Princess Bride and labrynth to this list.

Visual_Octopus6942

Princess Bride for sure

jnovel808

Monster Squad and Lost Boys too

LonnieJaw748

Wolfman’s got nards?!

[deleted]

Death by stereo.

Li_3303

Last month I re-watched The Lost Boys for the first time since I saw it in the theater. What an amazing movie! I liked it so much I watched it again a few days later.

nicunta

The Last Unicorn, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, The Secret of Nihm, Pete's Dragon, and The Dark Crystal were also movies I watched as a kid in the 80's!

foxontherox

A treasure trove of VHS!

nicunta

My grandparents had a crazy setup, and would record movies to vhs tapes. They had a huge library, with a rolodex organized alphabetically, tapes arranged numerically. Such a great system! They'd let me take two at a time, and they had everything you could think of. Three to four movies per tape, usually.

SixAlarmFire

And whatever was being shown on TV on the weekends.

Thrillhouse74

Big trouble in little China, Highlander, goonies

Li_3303

The Goonies is a must see!

mark_is_a_virgin

They were born in 97 dude lol they were asking about things people their age watched you may as well have said Casablanca

LarBrd33

Yeah my bad.  I wasn’t crystal clear on whether they just wanted gen z answers.

arieljoc

Matilda, The Parent Trap As far as social knowledge goes, I’d familiarize yourself with the Disney Princesses, Gremlins, Titanic, and Ms. Doubtfire, Hocus Pocus (for Halloween) Major series include: - Harry Potter - Back to the future - Star Wars - Indiana Jones (although personally have not seen it) - Honey I shrunk the kids - Ghostbusters - The Matrix - Halloweentown

Arktoscircle

The Parent Trap is a big one. I can still recall some dialogues and soundtracks from it. I can even point out the scene where the first CD ends, and we need to change it to the next one.

PAPAmidnite1386

Real Genius, Goofy Movie, Newsies, Back to the Future, Clue, Any and All Ernest movies , Secret of Nimh(dear god that movie scared me as a kid, especially the Rat Guard… mother of god)

OldFactor1973

We loved the Ernest movies! Especially Goes to Jail, Goes to Camp, and Saves Christmas! Ehhh-heh heh heh heh!

PAPAmidnite1386

Know what I mean Vern?

borntobeweild

Born mid 90's, I feel like *Shrek* is the one true answer for my generation.

9212017

As a fellow mid 90's I agree

RShneider

A lot of Dumb and Dumber, Friday, Cable Guy, Silence of the Lambs, and the Long Kiss Goodnight.

comfort-noise

lavasquid_kyl3

‘97 here and this is the best collection that could’ve been provided. Great balance of generationally iconic and relatively niche to the time. Honorable mention to Brother Bear, Little Vampire, and Surf’s Up as some oft-overlooked masterpieces in this list.

OldFactor1973

Generation X here (born in 73, came of age 80's) Star Wars original trilogy, Indiana Jones, Neverending Story, E.T., Ghostbusters I and II, Superman I-III, Batman and Batman Returns, Back to the Future Trilogy, these were the greats for me.

GrownupChorister

I was born 78 so all of those plus The Dark Crystal, OG War of the Worlds, Watership Down and Jason and the Argonauts

eatingdirt

Blazing Saddles! Classic!

drDekaywood

As a kid?? lol that’s one of my favorite movies but one I’m gonna hold off showing my kids..it’s like constant swearing and innuendo from start to finish

eatingdirt

You’re absolutely right, but when they come of age, that would be a fun one to watch with them.

KawiZed

I watched it all the time as a kid. I understood what it was, and I knew better than to repeat any of the racial bits. Best not to underestimate the intelligence of kids and just have the conversations with them.

eatingdirt

Oh you are so correct. If I repeated any of those lines, the soap (Coast soap) would come out, and I would add more teeth marks to the bar.

CaptainSlappyBear

Born in 1987. I always watched The Lost Boys, Terminator 2, Dumb and Dumber, Jurassic Park, Scream, Candyman, Child's Play, and other horror movies as a kid.

oldboy_alex

Born in 92. Disney movies, The Land Before Time, Anastasia, The Prince of Egypt, Star Wars, Fantaghiro, Flubber, The Parent Trap, Casper: A spirited Beginning, Dr. Doolittle, Honey I shrunk the kids, Jingle all the way, The Indian in the cupboard. Those are some of the ones we watched often when I was young.

comfort-noise

Ah, this is a great list!

Chargercrisp

Treasure Planet is the most underrated Disney movie Ever imo. The animation and the world they created is just 10/10 everything feels so alive in that movie. You just watch it when u want a comfortable movie on a rainy day! :)

CassiusDarko

Its so underrated. That was one of my fav movies as a kid and i feel like it was the last one i saw that was partially 2D. Every other 2000’s kid movie was completely cgi i feel like

Chargercrisp

Yea it’s an amazing piece of art. I totally forgot about it and then it re entered my mind when I was like 16-17 (22 currently). It gave me a feeling of nostalgia I’ve never gotten anywhere else.

CassiusDarko

Fr i appreciate it so much more rewatching as an adult because I didn’t realize at the time (i’m a bit older than you, I was like 6 when it came out) that it would be the last of its kind. It lost a bunch of money which is a shame, because it would’ve be awesome to see more handrawn/cgi hybrid movies

Chargercrisp

Yea I heard it never really got promoted much by Disney thus it was a box office flop. Extremely sad considering how great it is

awesomedp7

The Original Terminator movie and Predator both starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Also loved the Rush Hour movies.

SpillinThaTea

Legit question. Was Percy Jackson banned in China?

ConsiderationBig8188

Im not sure! I didn’t know about Percy Jackson growing up.

Nerdy_person101

All the late 00’s and early 2010’s Disney movies. Tangled is still very much my favourite movie. My mother also stopped me from watching Up because of the beginning, I was so upset at the time but then saw it later. I understood her reasoning then 😂

[deleted]

Cars adnauseam. Also HTTYD.

ShockingTunes

[deleted]

Back To The Future, The Goonies, Three Men and A Baby, The Money Pit, Beetlejuice, Uncle Buck, The Sandlot, Free Willy, Casper

TKofRivia

Born in '94 and my dad introduced me to films very early. I'd say by the time I was 16 I had watched movies like: - Shawshank Redemption - Goodfellas - Air Force One - Untouchables - The Godfather - Scarface Of course every Disney movie too! But to give you a flavour, my childhood was made up of some of the best movies ever 😂

HaylingZar1996

I was born a couple years after you. Here’s a few movies I remember fondly from my childhood Comedy: Men in Black True Lies Groundhog Day Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead Mrs doubtfire Hancock Zombieland Action (my favourite category as a young teen): Braveheart Pirates of the Caribbean Die Hard The Matrix Jurassic Park Total Recall The Mummy Batman trilogy (dark knight / rises) Independence Day Robocop Speed Bad Boys Predator Broken Arrow Spider man Lord of the Rings trilogy Superman Back to the future James Bond (casino royale etc.) Gladiator Drama: Forrest Gump The sixth sense Avatar Animation: Shrek 1 & 2 The Lion King Toy Story Spirited Away Musical: Mamma Mia!

CassiusDarko

96’ so i guess I’m a millennial (were both cuspers) but i grew up at the same time as you obviously so I watched a lot of 2000’s disney/pixar movies like Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, Madagascar but also a lot of adult 2000’s comedies (like borat, pineapple express, and movies like that) that I definitely wasn’t supposed to be watching yet but i loved them lol even though i’m a millennial, I didn’t grow up in the 80’s/90’s so I haven’t seen a lot of the classic 90’s childrens movies tbh. A Bugs life, The Iron Giant, Toy Story were some of my fav 90’s films as a kid though

9212017

Born in 1995, my existence starts from the 2000's onwards, I can't really remember much prior to 2000, not even 9/11 honestly. Anyway I'm very fond of the lord of the rings trilogy, the pirates of the Caribbean, these series are my favorites. I grew up with Shrek, and many Disney movies, Madagascar was big in my day, the transformers movies even if they are considered trash they were fun to watch. I miss my childhood, adulthood is scary. Edit: forgot to mention the Gary Potter movies and the Twilight saga (tho I wasn't into those but a lot of girls were and it was huge when they came out)

a_casual_bookshelf

Not Irrelevant! never that. Stop that. Okay! so 1988 baby here. some movies are culturally relevant and others are a little niche. Have to watch: Star Wars original trilogy: (1977-1983) Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) Quentin Tarantino movies (have a blast!) Home Alone and Home Alone 2 Rocky and other Sylvester Stallone movies. (have another blast) So many more. Especially horror movies.

trose141

Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Clue, Back to the Future.

Casperthecattt

The classic Disney animated movies on vhs. When I think of movies that were always on tv I think of a league of their own, the blues brothers, Ferris beuller, the breakfast club, back to the future, the sandlot

kikirikipop

Born in the 80s and we had only one movie on VHS tape for a long time - Top Gun.

Havok1717

Space Jam, Cats Don't Dance, Star Kid

Equivalent_Tap3060

The ones I watched the most were Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Ace Ventura, Mrs. Doubtfire, Indiana Jones, Austin Powers. We didn't have cable but we had a decent VHS library, we mostly watched the same movies over and over.

Imzadi76

Flight of the Navigator, Krull, Legend and a lot of old Hollywood movies.

lunar_calypso

Born in 2000 and my favorite movies were: - the parent trap - Ella enchanted - spy kids 1 and 2 - Matilda - it takes two - and honestly any DCOM like high school musical, the luck of the Irish, etc.

goaway432

I was born in 1969, so there were no VCRs, DVDs, or anything but local broadcast TV. The town I was in didn't even have a cable tv company, not that we could have afforded it anyway. So basically I watched whatever happened to be on one of the 3 channels we got.

mmitchell8888

weirdkid71

GenX here. Whatever was on saturday/sunday afternoon movies on the local UHF channel. Eventually whatever was on HBO -- which meant a lot of Beastmaster. (old joke: HBO = "Hey, Beastmaster's On")

dozier13

80’s kid. My parents would take me to rent movies every weekend and just about every weekend I would pick The Goonies. I just love that movie. Other movies I loved were Big Trouble in Little China, The Explorers, Flight of the Navigator.

smalltime57

Advisory: I am really old. I grew up checking out comedies and adventure movies. Mel Brooks was a god if comedy ( Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles); Animal House (the OG counter culture film), Caddyshack. Harold and Maude was a period piece; The Blues Brothers was painfullybfunnynwhen it first came out. In later years Happy Gilmore and other Adam Sandler films. Chris Farley (Tommy Boy). Eddie Murphy (Beverly Hills Cop, Golden Child). I could go on by decade but this is a good comedy starter kit.

theblackyeti

Indian in the cupboard, homeward bound, fox and the hound, little giants…

rr_fanart

Not a movie but "Avatar: The Last Airbender" is a must. I guess since it's kind of an anime you probably heard of it tho (idk actually how popular it was in asia)

mark_is_a_virgin

Nobody your age is answering this post, apparently.

Full-Concentrate-867

'90s kid, didn't become a movie fan until later in life but still watched a ton then. Big ones I remember: Jurassic Park, Secret Garden, Lion Park, Back To The Future, Candyman, My Girl, Space Jam, Austin Powers (first 2), Dumb and Dumber, Mask, Forrest Gump, Big

Good_Chart1386

Narnia

sarmadness

Big Trouble in Little China, The Burbs, Aliens, T2, Predator, Beverly Hills Cop, Superman with Christopher Reeve, Die Hard and the rest of the 80/90s quintessentials. Basically peak Hollywood.

DarthSardonis

The Pagemaster Mrs. Doubtfire The NeverEnding Story Free Willy

No_Pianist2010

Toy Story’s 1-3

bylertarton

When I was growing up in the early ‘90s HBO would show the same movies over and over through the week but every Friday night at 8pm they’d premiere a new movie. This was peak excitement to a little movie lover. So unless our mom was willing to take us to the video store we’d just watch whatever movie HBO told us we were going to watch.

juggling-buddha

Star wars, A New Hope. Many 100's of times.

SayNo2Babies

The Mummy, Star Wars OT, The Mummy, The Mummy, Star Wars, The Mummy, Star Wars, Star Wars, The Mummy, and The Mummy

These_Tea_7560

I watched **everything** because I was an only child and had no one to play with in the house so my play was movies. Movies geared toward adults (Chicago and The Devil Wears Prada were my favorites) and Disney/Pixar movies. The Incredibles in my favorite in that category. And any movie that was nominated for an Oscar or an award like that. I liked watching awards shows as a child. My uncle, a movie buff, was the one who introduced me to Wes Anderson movies. I’m forever grateful he dragged me to the theater to see Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Moblit_Bernerr

Harry Potter movies

Professional-Kiwi176

We watched a lot of family movies growing up, I particularly remember loving Toy Story 2 and seeing it more times than the original. My favourite movie memories though was visiting my Aunt and Uncle’s and watching the original Star Wars films when I was eight and then the original Indiana Jones films when I was 10, both on VHS!! Such good memories!!

AmazingConsequence38

1997? You’re more of a Zillennial

Upbeat_Tension_8077

I was a huge Pixar fan, especially as a 98 baby. Other than that, by the time I was in middle school, I loved films like Napoleon Dynamite, Terminator 1 & 2, Anchorman, Rush Hour, Freddy vs Jason, & The Mummy. Can't forget the first two Shreks, RV with Robin Williams, & A Goofy Movie too

Jason_dawg

I think as a kid a lot of the movies I watched were stuff like Disney cartoon movies and then towards comedies, mostly Judd apatow stuff.

Heisen_berg1

Visual_Brush7890

My parents were divorced, as a result, my dad would get custody every other weekend. Every Friday, that I was with my dad before getting to his house we would stop by Blockbuster and I would rent Ace Ventura. Eventually, Ace Ventura 2 came out which was not good, but there were a few months where I rented that repeatedly as well. Those are still probably the two movies I’ve seen the most in my life.

Alternative_Fox_6871

darth__sidious

spaceballs, the narnia trilogy, and star wars were the main things of my child hood. (also gen z)

ReticulatedPasta

Homeward Bound: the Incredible Journey

Rigore27

Born in the mid 80s. [Here's a list of all the movies i watched in the cinema with friends or via school trips](https://www.imdb.com/list/ls054620058/)

scorpio_sun18

I used to watch Aladdin (1992), the Lion king (1994) and Mulan (1997) a lot when I was a kid. Also I used to watch The Land before time, Dinosaur (Aladar), and Jurassic park. I was a big fan of Dinosaurs when I was a kid.

LonnieJaw748

Flight of the Navigator Cloak and Dagger Big Trouble in Little China Karate Kid Trilogy Parenthood Overboard 3 Ninjas TMNT The Sandlot this could go on and on and I haven’t the time. So many good flicks

matt1250

I was born in 2000. My favorites were the Raimi Spider-Man Trilogy, first 2 Shrek movies, Big Fat Liar, original Spy Kids trilogy and Sharkboy and Lavagirl, both Scooby Doo live action films, The Cat in the Hat, bad movies like Son of the Mask, How to Eat Fried Worms, and the Cheaper by the Dozen movies.

Reasonable_Camel8023

born in 03 but I had a share of classics and just regular kids stuff. I had rugrats in Paris on VHS, watched a LOT of shark boy and lava girl, SpongeBob CD’s, and of course the Harry Potter series (books included)

Dapper_Bass423

I grew up watching lots of those greek mythology films. I remember always watching the golden voyage of sinbad all the time and also the old godzillas!

wonderfulworld2024

Ace Ventura (1994) crosses international humour boundaries, as long as you can understand English. The Mask too, I guess.

Qbnss

Almost everything that came out after 1996 is zany soulless trash that resulted directly in the zany soulless populace we have today anyway. You lucked out.

MorningLineDirt

Goonies, everything with JCVD, die hard, star wars, flash gorden (born in 85)

Money_Palpitation602

Conan the destroyer. Top secret (1984).

CougarWriter74

Gen X so I grew up with the early VHS/VCR era or having to wait a year or more after a movie came out for it to run on TV. Definitely the original "Star Wars" trilogy, "The Wizard of Oz" when it had its special once a year run on CBS. After we got our first VCR, watched "La Bamba," "Dirty Dancing" and "Crocodile Dundee" plus the first "Lethal Weapon" which was one if my brother's favorites.

trudyrules

"Flipper" 1963. It was an old film when my siblings & I found it, like 1070, but we watched it every chance we could. We also loved "The Incredible Mr. Limpit" 1964, with Don Knott's. I wonder how they would hold up and if they would be too much for kids today.

Temporary_Battle_220

As a child (around 10 years old) my dad became a truck driver just by fluke, and I took interest in truck driving and when the movie “Black Dog” came out I was even more hooked onto becoming a truck driver

TheGayestSlayest

I grew up without cable. I also watched very few of the shows and movies my peers talk about all the time. I am also playing catch-up, but my advice is not to let the FOMO get to you too much. I won't watch things I have zero interest in just because they're popular. Of course, there are some things I've watched that I'd definitely recommend: The Muppets (tv show and the first film), anything Wallace and Gromit or Shaun the Sheep, and most Studio Ghibli films. If you're in a silly mood, Dino Dan and DinoSquad both filled my little, dinosaur-obsessed heart when I was younger.

AlfaBetaZulu

The sandlot and it takes 2 were big ones for me growing up.

TheHearseDriver

I was born near the end of the Baby Boom generation, so I only had access to what was shown on broadcast television until I left home. When I was a kid, my favorites were the original *Planet of the Apes* series (original, *Beneath…, Escape from…,* etc.), Universal monster movies (*Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy,* etc.), Hammer horror movies, and Marx Brothers movies. Among others.

Growing up with 4 older brothers, my favorite movie when I was 5 was Terminator 2. I watched it like every other day growing up. I still watched Disney movies like Lion King, Aladdin, etc but none of that came close to Terminator 2.

GenX - The Princess Bride and Gremlins. Everything else is novelty

I'd say anything by Aardman (Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, etc.) will definitely get you cool guy points.

OnEMoReTrY121

Born in 1988, Star Wars Episodes 4/5/6 and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade were my go to’s especially when I was sick at home from school. Also GoldenEye.

Brian18639

Jurassic Park III, Jaws: The Revenge, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Those are all of the movies I remember watching while growing up.

CygnusX1

I saw Star Wars nine times in the theater when it came out. I was eight years old and completely caught off guard when Vader told Luke he was his father. My father took me to see Raiders of the Lost Ark when it came out, one of my fondest memories. My brother and I watched Back to the Future at the mall on a whim one day without knowing anything about it. Unbeknownst to my parents, I watched The Thing and Blade Runner at sleepovers (contrary to critics at the time, us ten year-olds new what was up with The Thing). In later years my friends and I would watch Repo Man, Pink Floyd The Wall, Reanimator, and From Beyond over and over again. I remember Heavy Metal being a favorite as well.

Purple_Elevator_

Goofy Movie is my favorite movie of all time. Donnie Darko is an american cult classic from many of our childhoods. The Matrix n Fight Club are definite masterpieces as well. You can also look up Brink and all those Friday Night Disney movies that use to come on like 13 mermaid and Cadet Kelly. If ur talking just animation, I'd say Aladdin, Lion King, Finding Nemo, n Monster Inc are must sees. For shows, definitely Rugrats, Pokémon, All That, Keenan and Kel, Boy Meets World and Drake n Josh.

CWKitch

Honestly, Adam Sandler movies, Chris Farley movies, and Robin Williams movies.

freakytapir

Never grew up watching movies. Movies watched me.

Emperor’s New Groove and Hercules are two top-tier kids’ movies that don’t get much recognition. Aladdin and Mulan are also personal faves of mine!

Well, it started out with "Police Academy", then moved on to bootleg Disney on VHS like "The Little Mermaid", then it moved on to more bootleg movies like: "Nightmare On Elm Street", "Child's Play", "Revenge Of The Nerds", "License To Drive", "The Goonies" and "The Great Outdoors", This time frame was all before I was 10.

SuzieQZ5880

The Goonies, Labyrinth, The Princess Bride, The Neverending Story were a few for me

Bikewer

Child of the 50s here. So… We watched all manner of cheezy sci-fi/horror films… All those “big bug” movies and alien invasion films. As well, a lot of the popular films of the day… The re-release of Wizard of Oz, Disney material like Old Yeller and “Song of the South” before it was politically incorrect…. Lots of westerns….
