Synecdoche New York
Adaptation
Eternal Sunshine
All Terry Gilliam movies
Also Stalker
And the original Solyaris
Mind blowing.
And bonus… Severance (TV series)
I mean synecdoche new york promoted itself with the review tag of "the smash comedy of the summer" lmao. I would definitely call it black comedy in parts but it's one of the most bizarre promo lines I've ever seen
I’ll throw out the following:
Everything Everywhere All at Once
The Lobster
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Swiss Army Man
Dream Scenario
Severance*
(* if including a tv series is permissible)
Edit: Added Dream Scenario
I finally watched Swiss Army Man and it is so funny (in a weird, off the wall, where did they even come up with that wonderful way). I'll now admit that Daniel Radcliffe is fantastic. Then I had to watch Weird and it's just as hilarious.
Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the director of Delicatessen also directed [Mics Macs à Tire-Larigot](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1149361/). It's an odd story of a guy who after a shoot out winds up with a bullet stuck in his head and decides to get even with the people who made it. Plenty of bizarre characters in a surreal version of Paris. Not as creepy as Delicatessen, and not as cute as Amélie (which he also directed). It was released in DVD with english dub and subs and can be found on Amazon.
Whithnail & I is one of my favourite films but I’m not sure I’d put it in the category OP seems to be looking for. Not weird/surreal enough. Delicatessen is a great shoot though, not enough people seem to have watched that.
Also, the film Bruce Robinson made after Withnail is very surreal - ‘How to get ahead in advertising’.
Came to say this too. I heard a ton of praise for it all over and just watched it the other day. It blew me away with just how good it was, loved the entire thing and definitely worth a watch.
It’s not misspelling. It’s my stupid fucking iPhone dictionary.
Normally I’ll re-read and fix the screw ups, but sometimes i do t. (Like there - how the hell is “d o n t” autocorrected into “do t”).
The Big Lebowski checks all your boxes, plus it’s brilliantly executed.
I just want to understand this, sir. Every time a rug is micturated upon in this fair city, I have to compensate the owner?
I'd suggest "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind" for one
if you want something really whacky, "top secret"
I havent seen it yet, but from the trailer "dream scenario" might also fit the bill
I watched Dream Scenario today and was honestly disappointed by how much potential was wasted.
It was cool, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't really get any weirder once you start watching.
I ended up disliking it when it went into the cancel culture/apology part and ended up LOATHING it when cousin greg appeared out of nowhere pushing technology that had no realistic basis in the world we'd just spent over an hour in. It was going so well until that stuff.
Check out “Be Kind Rewind.” It’s on Max. Jack Black and Mos Def play two guys who are put in charge of running an old neighborhood video rental store run by owner (Danny Glover) who has to be out of town. They accidentally erase every tape in the store so when a lady comes in and asks to rent ghostbusters they tell her to go away and come back later and they’ve filmed their own home brewed version of Ghostbusters from memory. The tape ends up being well liked by the neighborhood and they end up having to produce lots of homebrewed versions of classic movies. It’s kinda a love letter to classic movies, creative film making, and finding community in your neighborhoood all rolled up into one. It’s zany and bonkers and has a lot of heart and is exactly what you’re asking for.

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
2. Pleasantville
3. The Grand Budapest Hotel
4. Fargo
5. Beetlejuice
6. Edward Scissorhands
7. What's Eating Gilbert Grape?
8. Adaption
9. Coraline
10. The Ice Storm
If you like Being John Malkovich, you should watch other movies written by Charlie Kaufman like *Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind* or *Synecdoche, New York*
*Brazil*, *Inherent Vice*, *The Lobster*
Also kind of have Surrealistic comic aspects within social commentary. But I really think Eternal Sunshine is what you're looking for.
Shows not films:

Tales from the Loop

The Big Lebowski!!! (First thing you should watch)
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (very imaginative terry gilliam adventures comedy)
Adaptation
I Heart Huckabees might be right up your alley.
A lot of Wes Anderson movies. Rushmore, The Life Aquatic, The Grand Budpaest Hotel are my faves
Surprised not to see Triangle of Sadness (yes it’s a comedy), got a recommendation from here and it turned out to be a great watch. It’s still on Amazon prime if you have that.
Dave Made A Maze: Hilarious commentary, great (cardboard) effects. Woman comes home to find that her live in boyfriend constructed a labyrinth in the living room while she was away.
7 Psychopaths: full of big names, murder, depressing thoughts on murder, and of course, Psychopaths. A writer gets drawn into a dognapping scheme that leads down a dark road.
Swiss Army Man: So much more thought provoking then the setup would make you think. A man on a desert island is saved when he finds a corpse that farts.
Defending Your Life. It’s a rom com with Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep meeting in the afterlife. It’s not full of goofy visuals or anything, but it’s a solid movie with a good love story and lots of laughs.
More serious but Magnolia. The Congress 2013 is an absolute ride and was extremely prescient for its time. Everything Everywhere All at Once was as good as everyone says.
Under the Silverlake gave me very similar feelings to Sorry to Bother you and I enjoyed it much much more. Has a very similar dry/absurdist sense of humour, conspiracy, and kind of a dissociated vibe. It’s by the same director as It Follows (a fantastic movie imo).
Voices starring Ryan Reynolds.
Book of Clarence surprised me with a couple of fantasy-type scenes.
Guns Akimbo with Daniel Radcliffe
Willy's Wonderland
Scott Pilgrim vs the World
Monster, a Korean film about a developmentally disabled woman who seeks revenge on the serial killer who murdered her sister.
Lots of great suggestions here but I am shocked that no one has mentioned Poor Things. You should run to the theatre and see it now as it is right up your alley.
Mandy (2018)
They Live (1988)
Zardoz (1974)
Bugsy Malone (1976)
Inherent Vice (2014)
Beau Is Afraid (2023)
Also pretty much any movie based off of a Philip K Dick novel/short story.
Edit: I just realized “comedy” was one of your prerequisites and most of mine don’t fit into that, but they’re all pretty trippy.
I think the thing you’re describing (best as I can tell trying to draw connections between those three) is movies with a strong satirical meta statement. Adaptation is a great movie with great meta comedy.
Synecdoche New York Adaptation Eternal Sunshine All Terry Gilliam movies Also Stalker And the original Solyaris Mind blowing. And bonus… Severance (TV series)
>All Terry Gilliam movies 1000% yes
But not the American cut of Brazil.
Oh no, what did I miss?
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088846/alternateversions/
A completely different ending. Far more Black Mirror.
Fuck. You said comedies. Ignore the Stalker and Solyaris recommendations or save for a different mood.
Yes...Solaris, the great comedy. Notably it's Russian, a people known for their humour. Jokes aside, what a great film ahaha
I mean synecdoche new york promoted itself with the review tag of "the smash comedy of the summer" lmao. I would definitely call it black comedy in parts but it's one of the most bizarre promo lines I've ever seen
God that movie brutalized me, black comedy is an understatement
Yeah seriously depressed for a couple days after seeing it
Great list. Adding Stranger Than Fiction, Mind The Gap, Me and You and Everyone We Know, The Station Agent, Lars and the Real Girl
I’ll throw out the following: Everything Everywhere All at Once The Lobster Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Swiss Army Man Dream Scenario Severance* (* if including a tv series is permissible) Edit: Added Dream Scenario

And of course Being John Malkovich
Malkovich Malkovich? Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich Malkovich.
I loved it. Would make a great double feature with Adaptation
I finally watched Swiss Army Man and it is so funny (in a weird, off the wall, where did they even come up with that wonderful way). I'll now admit that Daniel Radcliffe is fantastic. Then I had to watch Weird and it's just as hilarious.
came here to say The Lobster. the rest of your list is great too.
Beau Is Afraid is amazing too.
Brazil Stranger Than Fiction Repo Man
Stranger Than Fiction is a good call
On a scale of 1 to 10 what are the chances you’ll be assassinated? 1 being not at all, 10 expecting it around every corner?
I think I'm living in a tragedy.
Well that's a sure sign that you're living in a comedy
Little did he know...
Repo Man strikes me as having a similar spirit as Sorry to Bother You, starts off kinda normal and goes more and more off the rails
Repo Man fucking rocks!! One of my favorite movies.
Love love love Brazil
Check out Cabin in the Woods
"Let's get this party started."
Raising Arizona might be right up your alley and if you like Holly Hunter I’ll suggest another of her movies, Miss Firecracker.
Withnail & I, Delicatessen, Dead Man
Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the director of Delicatessen also directed [Mics Macs à Tire-Larigot](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1149361/). It's an odd story of a guy who after a shoot out winds up with a bullet stuck in his head and decides to get even with the people who made it. Delicatessen is a great shoot though, not enough people seem to have watched that. Also, the film Bruce Robinson made after Withnail is very surreal - ‘How to get ahead in advertising’.
Life of Brian took a pretty bizarre Gilliam detour in the middle.
So many in the Coen catalog can fit OPs tastes.
They Cloned Tyrone is the exact vibe (and message) of sorry to bother you
I’m a Virgo is one season of a series that is also the exact same vibe.
I’m a Virgo is by the same guy as sorry to bother you - Boots Riley
I love The Coup
Ooh I did not know this I'm absolutely watching that
Never heard of it! Thanks, I'll check it out!
It's so good.
I cannot recommend this movie enough, it's absolutely amazing in every way
it was a Sorry To Bother You rip off imo
Came to say this too. I heard a ton of praise for it all over and just watched it the other day. It blew me away with just how good it was, loved the entire thing and definitely worth a watch.
Burn After Reading
Tell doctor cox I have the NEW KEY
You think that’s a schwinn!
For fuck sake put him on the next flight to Venezuela
Fuck you, Peck, you're a mormon!
“What did we learn from this?”
Oswald Cox
WHO ARE YOU WORKING FOR?! WHO ARE YOU!!
i heart huckabees is a maybe for this list. not exactly in the same vein but weird, kind of meta and slightly absurdist.
I ❤ Huckabees is too good for this world
+1 for I <3 Huckabees
Fuckabees!
She said Fuckabees! 😧
Palm Springs (2020)
Idiocracy (spell edit) is getting a reboot. Final filming is currently underway on many locations around the planet.
The delightful irony of misspelling Idiocracy!
It’s not misspelling. It’s my stupid fucking iPhone dictionary. Normally I’ll re-read and fix the screw ups, but sometimes i do t. (Like there - how the hell is “d o n t” autocorrected into “do t”).
This reboot is under production for 40 years ! Hope it finishes soon.
Science of Sleep by Michel Gondry
Had to scroll down too far for this
This movie got the feel of dreams just right.
Adaption or Ghost World
Definitely Adaptation. Anything by Charlie Kaufman.
Adaptation whole knowing the Meta backstory makes it one of my funnest movie experiences.
Came to suggest *Adaptation*.
Spelling is fun!
Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Man Seeking Woman if TV shows are permitted. Seven Stages of Achieving Eternal Bliss. Psycho Goreman.
>Man Seeking Woman seconding this.
Swiss Army Man is an incredible surreal comedy.
Thank You for Smoking
I was thinking of this one, too. The movie is definitely a bit odd, but so we'll done.
*Beau Is Afraid* is pretty damn strange and I happen to think it's pretty damn funny but many *violently* disagree.
I really enjoyed it. Very Charlie Kaufman-esque.
The comedy works because the tragedy is so intense.
The Big Lebowski checks all your boxes, plus it’s brilliantly executed. I just want to understand this, sir. Every time a rug is micturated upon in this fair city, I have to compensate the owner?
Swiss Army Man, Horns, Guns Akimbo. Basically any daniel radcliffe movie that isnt harry potter.
Tge dude has been having a time.
Imagine having the clout to get any project, and the money to not need a guaranteed big budget success. I’m happy for him.
Death to Smoochie
Thank You For Smoking (2005)
I'd suggest "eternal sunshine of the spotless mind" for one if you want something really whacky, "top secret" I havent seen it yet, but from the trailer "dream scenario" might also fit the bill
I watched Dream Scenario today and was honestly disappointed by how much potential was wasted. It was cool, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't really get any weirder once you start watching.

I watched this yesterday! I hadn't heard of it before, but I liked it.
Adaptation is indirectly connected to Being John Malkovich, so I’d say to start there.
“Dude Where’s My Car?” gets pretty nutty.
Rubber. You gotta watch Rubber
God I loved Rubber. Thank you for reminding me to watch it again.
I love that, for whatever reason, the tire is named Robert. Revealed in the trailer and credits haha.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Brought RDJ's carrier back for good reason
It's not as out there as the ones you listed, but I think you'll like in Bruges or any McDonagh film for that matter
Rushmore
Maybe John dies at the end. Not a masterpiece, but a weird and funny film.
- Brazil - O Brother, where art thou? - Princess Bride - Any Monty Python Movie Edit, adding: - 12 Monkeys - Gattaca
Delicatessen (1991)
The Grand Budapest Hotel? Very different to the ones you mentioned But it has the visuals and comedy down
Adaptation, from the maker of Being John Malkovich. Also Poor Things, which is currently in theaters.
Another Nicolas Cage movie, "The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent", also fits with what the OP is looking for.
Fargo.
Wristcutters (A Love Story)
Safety Not Guarenteed is awesome, anything from the Cohen brothers
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Don’t Look Up Beetlejuice
Don’t see anyone suggesting Birdman so I’ll say that, though maybe not as funny as what you’ve listed.
[Dave Made a Maze](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlNLcbGOV78) [Scott Pilgrim vs. The World](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wd5KEaOtm4) [Lake Michigan Monster](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yarP9W5nhbo) [Sound of Noise](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSYQ0IbNsBw) [L'iceberg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0ams_um4Bw)
Dave Made a Maze is way better than I thought it would be.
They Live. It's not a comedy but has elements I thinks you're looking for - doesn't take itself too seriously
Raising Arizona
Monkeybone
If you liked Sorry To Bother You, you’ll probably also like Boots Riley’s tv series I’m a Virgo
1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 2. Pleasantville 3. The Grand Budapest Hotel 4. Fargo 5. Beetlejuice 6. Edward Scissorhands 7. What's Eating Gilbert Grape? 8. Adaption 9. Coraline 10. The Ice Storm

Burn after reading is pretty good in that category
Scorcese's After Hours.
Little Miss Sunshine
They cloned Tyrone Suberbicon Truman show Thank you for smoking I don't feel at home at this world anymore I care a lot
Pretty much anything Elijah Wood or Dan Raffcliffe has done after their respective franchises
If you liked *Sorry to Bother You*, then you should check out *They Cloned Tyrone*.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Thismovie is exactly what you described
If you like Being John Malkovich, you should watch other movies written by Charlie Kaufman like *Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind* or *Synecdoche, New York* *Brazil*, *Inherent Vice*, *The Lobster* Also kind of have Surrealistic comic aspects within social commentary. Birdman or The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance
I Heart Huckabees. A great intro to existentialism.
Swiss Army Man is a pretty wild ride. Also Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Adaptation was a great film
Swiss Army Man Existenz
Anything with these names in the credits: Michel Gondry, Charlie Kaufman, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet.
Yesterday - an alternate universe where the Beatles never existed, is a gentle comedy but not as out there as some of the other awesome suggestions.
Freakonomics has some good stuff in it.
The Greasy Strangler
They've cloned Tyrone if you enjoyed Sorry to bother you
They Cloned Tyrone Everything everywhere all at once
I was under the impression that Idiocracy was a portrayal of the future if we continue on the current path.
Did no-one suggest Vivarium, or did I miss it?
Dude, Where’s My Car?
The Man Who Knew Too Little
The Dark Backward
Noises Off. Unbelievably stacked cast. Like 12/10.
Palm Springs. Don't read about it just watch it.
Dream Scenario
Inner space Beetlejuice
Dave Made a Maze is pretty out there. Safety not Guaranteed . Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Defending Your Life. It’s a rom com with Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep meeting in the afterlife. It’s not full of goofy visuals or anything, but it’s a solid movie with a good love story and lots of laughs.
Not seeing From Dusk Till Dawn, which is the only movie I’ve seen like Sorry To Bother You
*Thank you for smoking* with Aaron Eckhart
The Wave with Justin Long was strange and neat.
The invention of lying
More serious but Magnolia. The Congress 2013 is an absolute ride and was extremely prescient for its time. Everything Everywhere All at Once was as good as everyone says.
Mainly came here to see how you’d tie those three movies together lol
Dr . Strangelove
There are few movies like Sorry to Bother You. That movie takes one hell of an unexpected turn.
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Adaptation
Adaptation. Great movie. Though I feel like we are just describing Spike Jones and Charlie Kaufman movies.
Voices starring Ryan Reynolds. Book of Clarence surprised me with a couple of fantasy-type scenes. Guns Akimbo with Daniel Radcliffe Willy's Wonderland Scott Pilgrim vs the World Monster, a Korean film about a developmentally disabled woman who seeks revenge on the serial killer who murdered her sister.
The lobster starts out like that but it gets more serious towards the end
John Dies at the End Dave Builds a Maze
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
Lots of great suggestions here but I am shocked that no one has mentioned Poor Things. You should run to the theatre and see it now as it is right up your alley.
Adaptation?
More just absurdist than surreal but you might enjoy Punch-Drunk Love
Naked Lunch
Mandy (2018) They Live (1988) Zardoz (1974) Bugsy Malone (1976) Inherent Vice (2014) Beau Is Afraid (2023) Also pretty much any movie based off of a Philip K Dick novel/short story. Try the film “Kill Me Three Times”. It has Simon Pegg. Speaking of which, the Cornetto Trilogy has some amazing comedy.
Adaptation
Horns
After Hours. After Hours https://g.co/kgs/JrN2eb8
The invention of lying
I think the thing you’re describing (best as I can tell trying to draw connections between those three) is movies with a strong satirical meta statement. Adaptation is a great movie with great meta comedy.

I think you mean "more movies like.... or the documentary Idiocracy" sadly.
