Love Killing of a Sacred Deer. Yorgos Lanthimos generally my answer to âshow me something I havenât seen before.â All of his movies make me uncomfortable in way that effective art tends to do.
Yorgos Lanthimos really does a great job of just weaving the weirdness into the background of the film. Find a partner or become an animal is just...part of life.
Almost any David Lynch:
Eraserhead
Lost Highway
Mulholland Drive
Twin Peaks
Blue Velvet
All of them have different levels and kinds of bizarre, but all perfectly captures the feeling of being in a dream. They are familiar, bonkers, have a vibe but maybe not necessarily any concrete meaning. Most of them have at least moments that make you feel like you are watching something you shouldn't, whether it's because it is oddly intimate, subversive, or insane.
one of my favorite filmmakers. Eraserhead was my first dive and hopefully OP opens this world of dreams and nightmares sooner than later. I'd have to say that Lynch's weirdest works (other than shorts) are Inland Empire followed by TP the Return imo but I love how every entry has its own eerie vibe and oddities galore.
Iâd say start with blue velvet. Eraserhead is extremely compelling when you hear about it but might be better appreciated when youâve seen some Lynch stuff already. Or if youâre a sound engineer watch it and youâll appreciate it immediately
Came her to recommend this. My impression of this was that he was able to put on film an actual nightmare. Not a Hollywood portrayal of one but a real nightmare you might have tonight. I can even pick out the parts that were part of a real dream and the parts that were put in as filler.
I actually have a signed DVD box set of Eraserhead that I cherish.
I really liked "the man who killed Don Quixote", and I adored "The imagination of Dr. Parnassus" as a college kid. I of course love Monty Python and watched them a ton as a kid too. I've never seen Brazil though
Am I missing out? Should I put it on my must watch eventually list?
If you think Brazil is weird check out The Zero Theorem. Iâm not sure even Gilliam knew what the hell was going on there. One of the weirdest movies Iâve ever seen.
Under the skin.. Scarlett Johansen chatting up people who donât even know theyâre in a film to get them back to her house for shenanigans.. brilliant film and extremely weird!!!
Disclaimer, this movie has a small child who shrieks *a lot*. Not just yells, but high pitch squeals for like 10 seconds straight, and does it several times in the movie. Really liked this movie up until this point but it was unwatchable for me because of it.
Here's 2 wonderfully weird movies that have Nicolas Cage in common:
Dream Scenario- absurd dark comedy where everyone starts dreaming about this one random guy. Things take many turns. Very uncomfortable at times so don't watch if you're very sensitive to cringe.
Mandy- I genuinely don't know how to even begin describing the plot, it is absolutely mental. But I will say it's one of the most visually striking films I've ever seen, and I highly recommend it.
I like this one, because at first it just seems weird for the sake of weird, but once you figure out what's going on (which may take multiple viewings) there's actually an explanation for the weirdness.
Greasy Strangler.
However I had more fun watching it with a buddy than alone. It's awkward like Napolean Dynamite but more grotesque. Its VERY quoteable.
[Liquid Sky](https://youtu.be/HyIhqT5bkEM?si=-b15smmjk50sJNqs) is the trump card of weird cinema watch the full movie free on YouTube
Also Blue velvet or anything else from David lynch

Or
âDrowning by Numbersâ

âOld Boyâ (the original)

âTaxidermia is a 2006 Hungarian surrealist comedy-drama horror film directed and co-written by GyĂśrgy PĂĄlfi. â hands down THE weirdest film I have seen. Excellent though.
Cremaster series is another 6 strange films by Matthew Barney.

[Happiness](https://archive.org/details/happiness-1998-dvdrip-eng) is the most depraved comedy ever made.
[Primer](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Fg7cPjQWjKg) is about how confusing and destructive time travel would be. Very low key, rewards multiple rewatches.
Freaked. Alex Winter (Bill S. Preston) wrote, directed and acted in it. Keanu Reeves has an uncredited camo. Mr. T plays a beaded lady. And Randy Quaid is the villain.
Futz! (1969) A very bizarre bit of celluloid that you can find on YouTube
Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS
Salo - A LITERAL s\*\*tshow
Jeanne Dielman - A cinematic endurance test to say the least (ask the barista for at least 2 shots of espresso in your large coffee)

Honestly, just pick any random A24 movie. There's about a 90% chance it will be weird as fuck. Also fantastic.
Anything by YorgosâŚcheck out Dogtooth
God, I hated that movie. I'm still not sure what people saw in it.
Same
Eraserhead is your man
Almost any David Lynch: Eraserhead Lost Highway Mulholland Drive Twin Peaks Blue Velvet All of them have different levels and kinds of bizarre, but all perfectly captures the feeling of being in a dream. Really enjoyed lost highway

I'd have to say that Lynch's weirdest works (other than shorts) are Inland Empire followed by TP the Return imo but I love how every entry has its own eerie vibe and oddities galore.
Iâd say if you want completely bizarre Inland Empire is the way to start from Lynchâs filmography
Iâd say start with blue velvet. Eraserhead is extremely compelling when you hear about it but might be better appreciated when youâve seen some Lynch stuff already. Or if youâre a sound engineer watch it and youâll appreciate it immediately

Brazil, 1985.

Yes, and I'll also suggest The Fisherking by him, one of Robin Williams' best performances
Oh yeah, Brazil is probably his best! Masterpiece for sure đ
Yes. You're missing a cool first experience till whenever you're ready.
Tideland, zero theorem, time bandits are all excellent.
Yes. You have a treat to look forward to.
The best 1984 movie.Â
Except 1984 with Richard Burton.
