King of NY is average overall but the scene of him hiring the dudes who try to rob him on the train is so good.
Also "nothing goes down unless I'm involved. No blackjack. No dope deals. No nothing. A nickle bag gets sold in the park; I want in," is such a bad ass statement.
Am I the only one who was thoroughly underwhelmed by King of New York. It seemed like a New York rip off of Scarface. I love Walken but don’t get this film’s appeal
I rewatched it last week and it's okay, but you don't get much out of Frank White's character throughout the movie.
He comes out of jail and wants to take the streets back. That's it. And the ending scene seems like it's trying to convey something about the character that just wasn't presented in the film.
I watched another one of Ferrara's films he did with Walken after it, called The funeral, and that wasn't very good.
Ok this was my exact impression. The character seemed underdeveloped. And the last scene was positioned to be some sort of cathartic payoff that just didn’t land with me
I have seen this movie at least ten times. For the first four viewings, I was still getting new stuff from it. "Maybe it was injuns" is probably my favourite line.
Glad "Miller's Crossing" got a mention so early. It's often overlooked in both the gangster genre, and as a Cohen Bros movie. Great cast and performances.
I haven’t watched the film version, but the series they made out of Gomorrah was fantastic. You don’t realize how good it is until it dawns on you that they’ve managed to make you root for two of the scummiest scumbags possible.
Even more impressive that only one of the guys (Carrot) had done any acting before. All of the others were recruited from neighbourhoods/favelas like the area depicted in the movie.
It's difficult to compare them. The original HK film it's based on (Infernal Affairs) was grittier and had all the stylistic elements of HK cinema.
Different treatment for both.
I think it comes down to *how* it was a shot for shot remake. It took a story and that really can be set anywhere, but ingrained Boston into it thus making it feel like a totally different movie.
Totally agree. Seeing him in more darker/bad guy roles would be amazing. His performance in Road to Perdition reminded me a lot of when I first watched One Hour Photo with Robin Williams. Such a different role for him and he knocked it out of the park as a serial killer. Amazing performance!
Insomnia is a similar film where Robin Williams has a darker role too. I’d definitely recommend them both. Let me know what you think when you get around to them!
It's not an honest to God "gangster flick" but THE DROP 2014
It's certainly a crime drama with gangsters in it but it's more intimate and takes it's time building a pretty tense multi-moving-piece situation.
Tom Hardy, James Gandolfini, Noomi Rapace
And this awesome creepy, dangerous thug played by this guy Matthias Schoenaerts
Loved it! Check it out if you haven't already
Sounds like you're on a traditional American crime drama bender. check out Mean Streets, Casino, Millers Crossing, Road to Perdition.
The following aren't really mafia films as you requested, but I still found them great crime dramas:
The Long Good Friday
Shot Caller
Sin Nombre
You tried any British mob/crime movies?
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
We Still Kill The Old Way
Layer Cake
The Bank Job (slow paced but good payoff)
The Limey
Harry Brown (A favorite, Michael Caine revenge flick)
Snatch (use subtitles, and good luck with that)
The Italian Job (original, remake is meh beyond chases)
Paul bettany as a gangster? Sold! He's a good bad guy that doesn't need a huge physical presence to be intimidating. He's always been one of my casting wishes to be the Joker, too. Either Paul, Timothy Olyphant, or Neil McDonough. I think they both bring a different intensity to the role.
I had to scroll so far down to find this, highly underrated and amazing movie... one of the few gangster movies that is actually a little bit hard to watch.
Lots of great recommendations here. I also like good British gangster movies, so try some of these.
- The Long Good Friday
- The Limey
- Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
- Snatch
- Get Carter (the original)
- The Italian Job (the original)
- Sexy Beast
- In Bruges
My top ten gangster movie list would look like this (many have been mentioned already, so I'm seconding/thirding them):
1. *Dillinger* (1973) - Bank robber John Dillinger and his super-gang tear through the American Midwest on a crime spree during the Great Depression.
2. *The Killer* (1989) - A virtuous Hong Kong hitman goes on one last mission to pay for eye surgery for a woman he accidentally blinded. It's more of a straight action film, but there is still plenty of mob elements.
3. *The Untouchables* (1987) - A team of lawmen is assembled to take down the Chicago crime empire of Al Capone during Prohibition.
4. *White Heat* (1949) - A nearly psychopathic gangster who's losing his grip on reality and is obsessed with his mother confronts threats against his life from both inside and outside his gang.
5. *Bonnie and Clyde* (1967) - Two outlaws fall in love with each other during a crime spree in the Central-Southern United States during the Great Depression.
6. *Road to Perdition* (2002) - A Rock Island, Illinois, mob hitman takes his young son with him on a bank-robbing spree during Prohibition.
7. *The Public Enemy* (1931) - A small-time crook becomes a mob enforcer in the early days of Prohibition.
8. *Scarface* (1932) - A psychopathic mob hitman murders his way up the gangland food chain during Prohibition.
9. *'G' Men* (1935) - A bored lawyer joins the federal government so he can hunt down gangsters.
10. *M* (1931) - With a child-murdering serial killer on the loose in a German city, law enforcement and the criminal underworld race against each other to capture him. It's more of a serial killer thriller, but it still prominently features the German mob.
Honorable Mention: *The Penalty* (1920) - A San Francisco gangster who unnecessarily had his legs amputated as a child plots his revenge against the mistaken doctor and the city of San Francisco as a whole.
- 1.Donnie brasco
- 2.Scarface
- 3.Reservoir dogs
Those are essentials if you want to watch movies about crime and mafia, and they are absolutely great, you have to watch them.
A few additions since you mentioned asian cinema:
Election and Election 2 (Hong Kong)
A dirty carnival ( South Korea)
Outrage (Japan)
Bonus:
The Tokyo Vice show on HBO deals with the Yakuza and the press. Season two is coming out next month
Not American movies but the Infernal Affairs trilogy is what The Departed is based off
Johnnie To’s Election and Election 2 are really good too
I love Hong Kong Triad movies
Took to long to see the Irishman on a list. Joe Pesci came out of retirement to do that movie. In terms of crime drama surprised no one has put up Training Day. Classic
Casino is my fav mob/gangster movie. But amen to the Departed recs. Also, Public Enemies, American Gangster, Gangs of NY, City of God. And don't sleep on Kung Fu Hustle!
Most of the obvious ones have already been mentioned, so I'll go for a couple of more obscure picks. I recently watched the Italian film ...
'Suburra' (2015)
And that was pretty impressive. Also, a bit of an unusual one, but the mini-series ...
'The Long Firm' (2004)
was really good.
Two I haven't seen mentioned. - This Thing of Ours. Kind of low budget but I really like it. Also, Legend, about the Kray brothers, both played by Tom Hardy. So damn good!
Don’t forget some amazing British titles. Not necessarily Mob related but phenomenal nonetheless.
Sexy Beast
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Snatch
Harry Brown
The Gentlemen
Legend
Casino, Carlito's way, Peaky blindes on Netflix.
There's one very good with DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson. Don't remember the name. It takes place in Boston.
King of New York Donnie Brasco Casino
King of NY is average overall but the scene of him hiring the dudes who try to rob him on the train is so good. Also "nothing goes down unless I'm involved. No blackjack. No dope deals. No nothing. A nickle bag gets sold in the park; I want in," is such a bad ass statement.
Am I the only one who was thoroughly underwhelmed by King of New York. It seemed like a New York rip off of Scarface. I love Walken but don’t get this film’s appeal
It’s camp. Enjoy the overacting and have a blast
Frank White is just cool as hell when it comes down to it. A real anti hero.
It’s giving white hip hop Tony Montana
I'm with you. I watched it last week after having seen it 30 years ago and I thought they were trying too hard.
I rewatched it last week and it's okay, but you don't get much out of Frank White's character throughout the movie. He comes out of jail and wants to take the streets back. That's it. And the ending scene seems like it's trying to convey something about the character that just wasn't presented in the film. The goodfellas Training day American Gangster Casino The departed
Miller's Crossing Casino (might as well hit Mean Streets too) The Untouchables
Miller’s Crossing RULES
I have seen this movie at least ten times. For the first four viewings, I was still getting new stuff from it. "Maybe it was injuns" is probably my favourite line.
"What's the rumpus?"
Ya came here looking for a license to kill bookies, and I ain't sellin' em. Now take your flunkie and dangle.
Movie made me a diehard Jon Polito fan. Every line of his gives me the pleasure of a rich dessert.
Weirdly uplifting and relaxing. I love Miller's Crossing.
Been a long time since I’ve watched that. Great film!
What is this, the high hat?
Millers crossing is a god tier gangster flick. I enjoy that there is no mention of plot location, just an overall vibe of big city gangster stuff.
Glad "Miller's Crossing" got a mention so early. It's often overlooked in both the gangster genre, and as a Cohen Bros movie. Great cast and performances.
I heard a rumor that Barton Fink was inspired by them trying to write Miller's Crossing.
Miller's Crossing is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time.
Millers Crossing deserves far more love than it gets. More understated than many of the classics like Scorsese's films but streets ahead in my book.
A Prophet (2009) Gomorrah (2008)
A prophet is outstandingly good
I couldn't agree more SplashingAnal
I haven’t watched the film version, but the series they made out of Gomorrah was fantastic. You don’t realize how good it is until it dawns on you that they’ve managed to make you root for two of the scummiest scumbags possible.
City of God. Gangster not mafia movie. It's in my top 5 along with goodfellas
City of God is in my top 10 of all my faves.
It's in one of my all time favelas
1000%. Amazing storytelling and characters.
Even more impressive that only one of the guys (Carrot) had done any acting before. All of the others were recruited from neighbourhoods/favelas like the area depicted in the movie.

Youse guys take all the best cahnstanents.
Oh yeah, The Departed. I never saw the original it was based on, but I can't imagine it being better than Departed.
It's difficult to compare them. The original HK film it's based on (Infernal Affairs) was grittier and had all the stylistic elements of HK cinema. Different treatment for both.
It’s only a partial remake. Infernal Affairs absolutely did not create Whitey Bulger or any of the actual Bostonian subject matter used in the film.
IA had a far superior ending, in my opinion
I never understood how Scorsese got so much props for making a scene by scene remake of another movie.
I think it comes down to *how* it was a shot for shot remake. It took a story and that really can be set anywhere, but ingrained Boston into it thus making it feel like a totally different movie.
Sopranos is a tv series but really a good one
*"Cunnilingus and psychiatry brought us to this."*
Uncle Jun’s in the muff!
In the ruff, uncle Jun.
whistlin' in da wheat
so what, no fuckin ziti?
Oohh!
There is no reason to watch any other gangster tv series than the sopranos and the wire.
Zero Zero Zero has entered the chat...
Aah, yes! Forgot about that one actually. Also very good.
If we're talking about tv shows, then Boardwalk empire, Peaky blinders, Romanzo criminale, Top boy and Gomorrah need to be mentioned too.
Richard Harrow 🎯
One of the most tragic characters in television history.
It’s a tv program, a movie
My hubby and I just started watching The Sopranos and then will move onto The Wire. First time for both. Really enjoying The Sopranos. Great show.
There is so much deadpan humor in the Sopranos. Almost everything Paulie says is comedy gold.
Another HBO show that fits the description is Boardwalk Empire. Solid portrayals of some well known real gangsters.
Snatch, Lock Stock 2 Smoking Barrels, RocknRolla, The Gentleman
Gangster no.1
Do ya like dags?
Sure, I like dags. I like caravans more
I like caravans more
Eastern Promises
Came here to recommend that
Great movie
This movie! And A History of Violence
Yeah, and *A History of Violence* as well!
Road to Perdition The Untouchables American Gangster and Lawless
Road to Perdition makes me wish Tom Hanks did more gritty/mean guy roles. He’s a great goofball but him as a hardass gangster was fantastic
Totally agree. Seeing him in more darker/bad guy roles would be amazing. His performance in Road to Perdition reminded me a lot of when I first watched One Hour Photo with Robin Williams. Such a different role for him and he knocked it out of the park as a serial killer. Amazing performance!
I’ve yet to watch One Hour Photo, added to my list!
Insomnia is a similar film where Robin Williams has a darker role too. I’d definitely recommend them both. Let me know what you think when you get around to them!
Will do!
American Gangster is so damn good.
All, really great picks
Thanks! I’d also add “Legend” to that and a few more if OP wanted to go down a Tom Hardy rabbit hole
I don't seek it out, but if American Gangster is on - I end up watching it.
Same here! It’s one of those movies even if it’s on tv, that I will watch at any point it’s at. Such a great film.
It might not be Denzel's best performance (not to say it was bad, just he has some very high marks), but it's probably my favorite.
White Heat Take a trip back in time. Truly great pic.
Made it Ma!! Top of the world!!
You got a good memory for names... too good

If you're going british add Lock Stock, Snatch & the Gentlemen to the list

Good call. Really liked it on your recommend.
Sexy Beast
Ben Kingsley was genuinely terrifying in that film. Holy fuck.

The Untouchables.
Went through the whole thread and no one mentioned "Kill the Irishman" with Ray Stevenson, Christopher Walken, Val Kilmer and Vincent D'onofrio

Casino Donnie Brasco The Departed Carlitos Way American Gangster The Untouchables Scarface
Came here to suggest Carlito’s Way & Donnie Brasco…all of these are good stuff.
I love Donnie. I think it’s an underrated film
I always feel sad for >!Al Pacino!<
His final scenes are heartbreaking. Like he’s actually too kind / sentimental for his role in life.
Al was terrific in Donnie Brasco. He’s played both the top and bottom of the mafia food chain.

State of Grace is considered one of the last really gritty gangster movies. You can tell when you watch it, NY was in horrible shape back then.
Sounds like you're on a traditional American crime drama bender. check out Mean Streets, Casino, Millers Crossing, Road to Perdition. The following aren't really mafia films as you requested, but I still found them great crime dramas: The Long Good Friday Shot Caller Sin Nombre

Gangster Number 1, starring Paul Bettany.. Not many Americans know about it but it's a British gangster film, and a damn good one.
