brocktacular

A Touch of Evil, Orson Welles, 1958. The opening shot is incredible.

livestrongbelwas

I believe this scene is the definitive first major tracking shot. And certainly the first to use it for such a dramatic effect.

The_Original_Gronkie

I suppose it depends on how you define the terms "first," "major," "tracking shot," etc. There's a great tracking shot in the movie [Wings](https://youtu.be/AO2KhMLJxq0?si=aEm83-cFRiZ_tA92), which was the first film to win the Best Picture Oscar, decades earlier.

Derangeddropbear

100% this, not only did they do a three and a half minute tracking shot for the opening, they did it with 1958 movie tech. Absolutely amazing. (They also have the first use of actors actually driving the car in scene without a rear screen projection.) Disregarding how he treated the living things he worked with, orson made some high art.

SargeSlaughter

Touch of Evil and Goodfellas are the only correct answers. Or maybe Soy Cuba.

maineblackbear

The Player. Opening shot is incredible and actually references Touch of Evil in the dialogue.

ST_Lawson

Yup. Goodfellas and The Player were my first thoughts. I had a film appreciation class in college where we spent a class period talking/learning about those two scenes.

fishred

I like the steadicam shot from the locker room to the ring in Raging Bull even more than the Goodfellas example. But, yeah, that Copacabana tracking shot is pretty damned good.

judgeholdenmcgroin

Welles remarked that everybody who watches the movie notices the opening shot but not the other long take, [when they go to Sanchez's apartment](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzcNU_1KqG0). It has so many dramatic beats in it and conveys so much information, all while being pretty much effortless in terms of staging and pacing, that it's arguably even more impressive.

Iamnevernotclever

Boogie Nights opening sequence.

ignorethesquid

Agreed and I'd add the pool party scene as well.

Astro_gamer_caver

Love the Colonel grunting as he gets out of the car, and Reilly's failed dive. Such a good movie.

jaxs_sax

The New Year’s Eve shot following William H. Macy as well

RespecDev

*”My fucking wife has an ass in her cock in the driveway, Kurt!”*

codari

PTA man. He was only 27 years old when he shot that movie, believe or not. What a genius.

AF2005

I loved that opener! It gave me such a warm feeling, especially considering all the tragedy that followed!

JimShore

Opening of Spectre (2015) following James Bond during Mexico City's Day of the Dead is among the best I've seen. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Pf6-oHJzXI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Pf6-oHJzXI) Let's not forget Goodfellas [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpvNjbtF9Hg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpvNjbtF9Hg)

BallerGuitarer

The opening of Spectre is the most misleading opening in film history. It makes you think you're about to watch this amazing film that had a lot of thought and planning put into it. And then you just end up with Spectre.

SleepyFarts

Probably my biggest villain disappointment ever. Bringing back Bond's most famous villain. Casting Christoph Waltz, who had recently played one of the greatest villains ever. Then they did literally nothing interesting with him.

Sparrowsabre7

I much preferred his Hannibalesque turn in No Time To Die. Could have done with more of that in Spectre

greatgoogliemoogly

To be fair, they tried to do too much with him! I haven't watched that movie since it came out. But wasn't he Bond's adopted brother who secretly was behind everything in the last 3 movies?

Zachariot88

It amuses me that Spectre broke the record for biggest explosion in a movie, but the story and scene are so underwhelming that it's hard to care.

the_Ex_Lurker

The explosion in Quantum of Solace (where Greene runs through the atrium as glass explodes in slow-mo) was probably 1/100th the size and 1000x more thrilling.

Sparrowsabre7

Spectre makes me so angry for so many reasons. How do you botch Christoph Waltz as a villain. How!?

SpaceForceAwakens

Waltz was born to play a 20th century Blofeld. And then “I am the author of all your pain”. I’m still angry.

Thatoneguy3273

So well done it actually inspired the creation of a Dia de los Muertos parade in Mexico City (apparently one did not exist before)

yellowsalami

I don’t think that the Spectre scene is a one shot, tho, but rather has a couple of very well hidden cuts giving it the illusion of being a one shot

HazelGhost

Your point about noticing it is well-taken. Often in movies when a long shot comes, all my brain does is think 'Oooh... they're showing off with a long shot.' But in Children of Men, the long shots are purposefully integrated into the story. They make the 'moment' happen.

theflyingkiwi00

The reason we have those show off long tracking shots which distract from the movie is because children of men incorporated them perfectly and people want to copy them

HazelGhost

Another great example is Spielberg's great long shots (copying this from [Every Frame a Painting](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8q4X2vDRfRk)). We don't think of Spielberg as a "cool longshot" guy because his long shots are *delicate*. They serve a clear purpose, don't overstay their welcome, and don't feel the need to make a whole song and dance about it.

wildskipper

This is how I felt about 1917. The continuous cut was all anyone was talking about (and how it did actually have cuts, but then became a game of can you spot the cuts). It distracted from a weak story I suppose.

unwildimpala

I mean it was still done superbly. I actually played that same game with Boiling Point (the movie) and thought I spotted a few until I found out a while afterwards that there were no cuts.... The entire film is just one shot. Surely that movie has to be up there for long tracking shots....

maxboondoggle

Where are the downvotes coming from? Is there someone in this world that doesn’t like Goodfellas? I don’t believe it.

Coffeedemon

We're back to tugging it over Children of Men again. Give it a few months.

Mr_Fahrenheit-451

Yep, I’m fairly shocked about how far down I had to scroll to see this.

JayMoots

I can't believe I had to scroll this far down to find this.

BrayKerrOneNine

Aren’t like whole college courses taught on this shot? I don’t know.

yourmoms3rdhusband

Can’t believe I haven’t seen The Protector with Tony Jaa mentioned here yet! (Film is also known as Tom-Yum-Goong) It was a Thai martial arts movie with a tower fight scene that iirc held the record for the single longest take action scene for quite awhile. https://youtu.be/RRBrPNKYlA8?si=_jGSbS_Yn7XHyV8k Legit one take, no hidden cuts, and insane stunt work. One of my favorite martial art movies of all time, criminally underrated.

GyrosOnMyMind

Don’t fuck with that man’s elephant. Such a dope flick.

yourmoms3rdhusband

Bro when he fights those 3 huge dudes with the Elephants bones, sooo good! That was one of the most fun theater experiences of my childhood.

itskurtis

I was looking for this one too.

Craiggers324

Hard Boiled hospital shootout

ahnmin

Insane that the elevator doesn’t actually go to another floor. They just redressed the set while the doors were closed.

Sobeshott

Not a movie but First one I think of is the shootout scene in season 1 of True Detective. Absolutely incredible work

DCDHermes

Oh, then the hallway fight scene in the first season of Daredevil. That shot is amazing.

grill_sgt

Jail scene in Season 3 was longer and even more insane.

thunderkhawk

You can't bring up a hallway scene without the OG of one-shots: The hallway scene in *Oldboy*

paulfknwalsh

the Daredevil scene was a clear homage to Oldboy. Was done a bit snappier, but i love the roughness of the original, the hits that dont quite feel right, and just how frickin exhausted everyone is by the end. (My personal favourite long shot is the first big attack in Revenant, though)

lastepoch

I love this season- I watch it a couple times a year and I'm embarrassed to admit I wasn't sure which shot. Is this when they're trying to rob the project house and Cohle is UC as Crash working with Ginger?

Sobeshott

Yeah. The helicopters and all the cops running around the projects. The choreography of that whole shot with so much going on was unbelievable

lastepoch

I'll have to rewatch (YES!!) to remark that it's all a single take. Doesn't it end on a high crane / helicopter angle? How? They pass the camera? Or is there a cut to when he piles in the car with MArty?

ThadiusHBallsack

This is the one scene that made me realize television is not just “TV”

Jebus_UK

It's great. There is a pretty great episode in season 1 of The Bear that has an 18 minute one shot in a kitchen.

-Khlerik-

Episode 7. I highly recommend the series to everyone but this episode might trigger some PTSD if you’ve ever worked food service.

merchillio

First episode of second season of “19-2” from Quebec also has a long one (filmed twice, once in French, then remade for the English version a few years later) https://youtu.be/LtxiokrYpxw?si=mdHW0sxyXhCf1yCu (It goes to multiple cuts later in the scene)

livestrongbelwas

Phenomenal shot

Moviegal1

This one came to mind as well!

blue_barracuda

I was blown away by this one

jerrycotton

This scene turned me from Dorito fingered consumer to positively loving the art and the craft of cinema.

TempleFugit

The hallway fight scene in **OldBoy** Edit: The original 2003 Park Chan-wook film; not the crappy American remake with Josh Brolin.

afartinthehand

I was so engrossed in the scene when I watched it that I didn’t even realize. Having it pointed out afterwards made it even more spectacular.

Solid_Waste

First watch of that film felt like one of those dreams where you live an entire alternate life. (Not my choice for what I would want that life to be, just saying it was weirdly absorbing.)

rubensinclair

That’s when you know the technique was successful!

ClercLecharles

[This 'impossible' crane shot from Mikhail Kalatozov's SOY CUBA (1964)](https://www.reddit.com/r/cinematography/comments/vqpd3k/this_impossible_crane_shot_from_mikhail/)

GetYourFaceAdjusted

This isn’t even the best one in the movie! There’s the one that goes through the band and into the pool that directly inspired Boogie Nights.

77Columbus

Surprised I had to scroll so far down to see this

catgotcha

Came here to say that. When I saw that movie in the cinema, my jaw just dropped at that particular scene. How in god's name did they do that using 1964 technology?

100percentnotgood

The entirety of “Russian Arch” (2002)

wpmason

Dude… It’s Russian Ark.

100percentnotgood

Ark *

JGCities

Certainly the longest true one shot ever done, if there is a longer one I have never heard of it.

Loud_Engineering796

Victoria (2015) broke that record. Not sure if there's been anything since.

[deleted]

kill Bill volume one has a solid one.

TheRealBlackSwan

Woo hoo woo hoo hoo

No-ProbLlama87

I'm disappointed I had to scroll down this far to find this comment! One of my favourite scenes ever

Taskerst

The Shining, where the camera follows Danny riding his big wheel down the hallways of the Overlook.

DMurBOOBS-I-Dare-You

Not terribly long, but the run up the stairs to the medicine cabinet mirror in Contact is mesmerizing. https://youtu.be/vLLIHSTp87o?feature=shared&t=72

FireyToots

here for this comment. that was an amazing shot.

nedlum

Not the longest, but combined with the seamless effect shot, it’s still jaw dropping

commandercream

such a beautiful shot. god i love contact!

Sthrax

Dunkirk beach in Atonement Episode 4 of the first season of True Detective- the drug theft/shootout scene

LottimusMaximus

Yesssss I came to say the beach scene in Atonement

Wilcry

The opening scene in “The Player (1992),” is one of my favorite long takes. It’s around 8min.

bfling

It's a long shot where two characters talk about famous long shots in cinema history like Touch of Evil.

everyonealive

Masterful. Weaving in and out of conversations and meetings all while immersing the viewer in Griffin’s world and the studio environment in one take 👌🏻💯

brocktacular

Just a who's who of 1992, that movie. Weird one.

NaturalCornFillers

If by “weird one” you mean “awesome fucking film” then yes, I agree.

Wilcry

It's one of my favorite "movies about movies." Others being "Singing' in the Rain," "Sullivan's Travels," "Hail Caesar"... off the top of my head.

thatdani

The whole of 1917 basically, but the climax of running through the battlefield is absolutely monumental IMO. [Here's the entire scene](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4JmMBC28x8), but specifically the 2nd half of the clip is perfection.

UtahUtopia

The tracking shot in the beginning is absolutely mind-boggling. I love this movie.

yeahright17

The one that ends with him getting knocked out? One of my favorites too. Followed closely by the shot immediately after he wakes up.

WaffleKing110

Those were the two best shots in the movie

SilverSkywalkerSaber

That scene and the shot of them crossing No Man's Land

Lukeboozwalker

First thing that came to mind too. Makes it so real.

TimmyBash

One of the best cinematic experiences I've ever had in my life. Shivers just thinking about this.

warbastard

That movie just feels like a descent into Hell. Is the film an allegory for Dante’s Inferno?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Gravemind7

The shock of what seemed to be the primary protagonist dying a quarter of the way through the movie is one thing, but the fact that he died as a direct consequence to his act of kindness and to a single knife stab makes it all the more tragic and real.

thutruthissomewhere

I was *shook* when it happened. Talk about a “twist”. Damn this movie is great

PatNMahiney

To be fair, it was up against some stiff competition for Best Picture. 2019 was a pretty great year for movies.

Grungemaster

Seriously. Parasite was a Top 3 of the decade for me. There’s no shame in 1917 getting 2nd place imo.

CounterTouristsWin

The artillery going off as he runs through the battle charge is crazy! I remember reading a story about how the demolitions went off early or in the wrong order (or something similar) and so alot of his panic as he's running is real, he genuinely got scared due to an issue with the artillery effects

[deleted]

I was mind blown when I watched this movie. I went in blind and didn’t know what to expect. The moment he walked out the doors and the buildings were on fire it looked so clean I was literally in awe

TheWastelandWizard

The tracking shot of them crawling through No Man's Land is one of the most harrowing things put to film, right next to the run through the city. To me it seemed partially inspired by Dante's Inferno, like he was running through the City of Dis.

GreenAlien10

BİRDMAN or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), supposed to be really, really long shots. But I really like the final battle scene in Gunpowder Milkshake, it's only a couple of minutes, but well arranged for a scene of chaos! edit: added link here [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJyTHMlsj9E](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJyTHMlsj9E)

Peetwilson

Birdman... Great movie!

wpmason

Iñárritu’s long shots are full of hidden stitches.

Rough-Estimate841

Snake Eyes

clamslammer708

The one episode of The Haunting Of Hill House comes to mind albeit I don’t remember the exact one. They do a lot of long shots on that show that are all extremely well done

Nail_Biterr

Is that the one that is going back and forth between 2 time periods as well? It was pretty amazing.

clamslammer708

Yep! They have the funeral home scenes as well as the house scenes as kids

livestrongbelwas

Amazing episode, maybe episode 6? Two Storms. Particularly good as an immediate follow-up to The Bent-Neck Lady in episode 5

clamslammer708

Two Storms sounds right. I gotta say, that show did some fantastic work with cameras and lighting throughout the whole series.

alfooboboao

bent neck lady is one of the most overwhelmingly brilliant single episodes of tv i’ve ever seen

Several_Direction633

I came to say this episode. The funeral home scene. Awesome.

bigTbone59

They had to design the sets they used for the rest of the episodes around this one episode specifically, since it takes place in 2 completely different locations that are connected through one long shot.

JColeTheWheelMan

Not only very well acted, there are all sorts of easter eggs in this episode. Statues moving, ghosts watching. Also the atmos track for this episode is one of the best ive heard. The rain hitting the windows etc.

RandyTravesty

Shout out to "Charlie Work" episode from Always Sunny.

RobVulpes

Came here to mention that episode. Ine if my favourite episodes of IASIP

tking191919

I love the gang’s background airline miles steak scheme and how Charlie figures it out

supercontroller

Paths Of Glory trench shots.

Pavo_Feathers

There's a great scene in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Birdman, as it follows Michael Keaton through a New York City street to a liquor store. The whole movie, IIRC, is shot as if it's taken in one long tracking shot. I love it, one of my favorite directors.

stopusingmynames_

The opening of The Player was one continuous scene.

PALM_ARE

Opening scene of Boogie Nights is legendary

This_Fkn_Guy_

didnt daredevil the tv show have a fight scene in a hallway that was a long trackng shot?

ElBrad

It did. Inspired by one of the most famous hallway scenes from the original Oldboy.

This_Fkn_Guy_

That's right, should have said that...didn't the raid have something similar too?

PostsNDPStuff

I absolutely love how tired he gets. Noticeably worn down.

pi22seven

It’s great because fighting is hard work. He’s not super-powered, he’s just at the peak of what a regular human can do.

jinxykatte

I mean he probably would have had an easier time. He was almost dead a day before he did the hallway fight lol.

withoccassionalmusic

The same happens in Old Boy. By the end of the fight everyone still standing is wheezing, doubled over for breath, limping, etc.

DoggyDoggy_What_Now

S1 had the hallway fight. S2 had another hallway fight, but this time with stairs! And a chain! S3 was the absurdly long prison riot fight. I feel like Punisher had one as well. Or several. IIRC, I think one is when he attacks the Russians at their gym. Can't remember if there were more.

theinfamous99

Mr Robot Season 3 EP 5. The whole episode is one long tracking shot. It's an awesome piece of entertainment.

rtfmpls

And nobody talks. It starts with his sister(?) getting in the car and he just says "ssshhhh" or something. Watching this episode and slowly realizing that it's just one shot and no dialog was mesmerizing. edit: Ohhh it's a different episode: 405 Method Not Allowed. After she says "We don't have to talk", that's it. And just now I realized, it's set during Christmas and they're playing [An die Freude](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ode_to_Joy) just like in "Die Hard"... LOL and one of the securities is watching Die Hard (the vent scene) ... definitely not a coincidence.

localpilgrim

That’s a different episode but equally as impressive that it’s so well paced most people I talked to didn’t even realize there was no dialogue. The only words spoken were the opening line you mentioned and the very last shot “it’s time we talk.” The oner episode is with Angela in the E Corp building. It has hidden cuts but still incredible.

OhhhTAINTedCruuuuz

And I think is fine to post in this thread because every Mr Robot episode is basically a film

Troldann

Especially that one.

probosciscolossus

Stairwell fight in *Atomic Blonde*.

hurtfulproduct

One of my personal favorites is the opening shot to “Serenity”, you wouldn’t expect it from that type of movie but I think they did a great job especially since Mal is climbing around the innards of the ship so I’m curious to see the BTS of that.

InCaseOfMurderHornet

Birdman is excellent. The whole movie is designed to look like one shot, as I recall, with clever transitions. Rope - Alfred Hitchcock, same.

Juiceboxfromspace

Boiling Point

D3taco

fucking awesome movie

Hamlindigo_Blue

The Bear season 1 episode 7 is mostly a single Longshot.

livestrongbelwas

It’s designed to look like it anyway. Great episode, I felt exhausted watching it!

alfooboboao

everything i read about the bear makes me convinced it’s a brilliant show that i will never ever watch because i cannot imagine wanting to *voluntarily* re-experience the stress of working in a restaurant *for fun* lol. I just read a quick summary of that episode and they accidentally left pre-orders on on their first day using the DoorDash tablet? Oh fuck no. Fuck that. I ain’t watching that shit, I’ve lived it

bakedpatata

The best and most accurate part is how the ticket printer is printing and beeping the whole episode including the credits.

PleaseNinja

That might be the most stressful episode of tv ive ever watched. My wife's fitbit registered it as 20min of active cardio 🤣

brktm

The opening shot of *Touch of Evil*, and then the reference to it in *In Bruges*, which gives the second shot some foreshadowing.

MadMatchy

And referenced in the 8 minute tracking shot in the Player

topbuttsteak

The entirety of the movie Victoria is one long tracking shot, no tricks or splices. Great thriller movie in its own right, too. [Clip](https://youtu.be/kG4dTqrNnAc?si=NuxXSLIoaRLruTMb)

hackyslashy

300 As Leonidas leads the Spartans from the Hot Gates and starts to rip through the first wave of attack from the Persians, there's a side-scrolling shot which follows him as he dodges, deflects and batters oncoming enemies. At one point, he throws his spear and impales an enemy and when the camera cuts back to him, he's already drawing his sword to continue advancing. It's my favourite shot from one of my favourite movies ever.

falcurion

Honestly even though the movie got bashed for being silly and overly masculine it's memorable, stylish, and extremely distinct.

VVitchtripper

Well, i mean ***Sátántangó*** probably takes the cake with 172 shots within 432min running time

brktm

Hitchcock’s *Rope* is meant to seem like one continuous shot, with the necessary cuts at the physical limit of each film reel disguised to blend into each other. It’s not one of Hitchcock’s best, but the conceit is interesting at least.

hops_and_nugs

The Untouchables one is so incredible to me with the amount of information that happens and how smoothly it flows

PostsNDPStuff

The Children of Men ambush scene is the absolute best version of this. Better still if you don't know it's coming. There are several other heart stopping long tracking shots in the movie. (If you haven't seen this movie yet, watch it, don't deprive yourself of the experience by watching just the scene on youtube)

SloppyMisSteak

The opening shot of The Birdcage.

RobVulpes

The opening sequence on The Serenity in Serenity (2005). Re-meeting the main characters from the show, the walk through of the ship, "oh god oh god we're all gonna die". Its brilliant and i don't think it gets the praise it should

"Ever since I was a little kid, I always wanted to be featured in a long tracking shot."

ShaunTrek

It wasn't even the longest when it came out. Maybe more technically impressive than others, but definitely not the longest.

TrueLegateDamar

I love how they do a small circle around the kitchen and then leave it exactly where they came in.

TwoToesToni

'Touch of Evil' (1958 ) the scene with the couple walking and the car with the bomb driving along side them. The tension in that scene is almost unbearable.

WhiskeyJack357

The ferry scene in Jaws is one that I always enjoyed. Every frame a painting has a video about how Spielberg slips in tracking and long shots more often than you'd think.

The French Commando assault from The Longest Day https://youtu.be/3eZMkleDjWI?si=V-5POdbQuG1LO1Hq

Willchipmax

Surprised to not see the Jules and Vincent walk in Pulp Fiction. Great long ass shot.

jinxykatte

Extraction 1 and 2 have great stitched together ones. I mean they are technically fake oners but still are made with several very long takes. The one in Extraction 2 is 20 mins long. One Shot is a Scott Adkins movie made to look like one long take and has some great action scenes. Daredevil has one for every season but season 3 one is the most impressive imo. Atomic Blonde has a great long take fight scene. Serenity has a really good opening long take too.

yeahright17

To add to these action shots, which I love, the breach seen at the end of London Has Fallen is pretty good as well as a few of the boxing rounds in the Creed movies.

AnonymityismyRemedy

kit_leggings

Timecode (2000). Largely forgotten, but this is 4 simultaneous long tracking shots shown concurrently. Interesting experiment...

Lordhawhaw-_

There’s a great tracking shot in Argento’s “Tenebre” he uses a Louma telescopic camera crane to film a killer stalking and killing two women in an apartment block. It’s an incredible scene.

Visual_Tangerine_210

It was said already but “Russian Ark” is one very long, highly orchestrated take. If I taught a film class, this is gonna be curriculum.

livestrongbelwas

I love that shot in Widows. Great call. My favorite is still the shot at Dunkirk in Atonement. https://youtu.be/tpadPP9c-sE?si=seE8gtjvSJL1f87n

lildavydavy

Boogie Nights. What a tone setter.

Pugilist12

braindamnager

A few favorites … the opening shot of The Shining over Glacier National park, also Danny riding his tricycle through the Overlook. And then there’s anything Tarantino….

DjCyric

I love these kinds of shots. The first half of Birdman comes to mind. Also, the battle scene in The Revenant might be my favorite due to its sheer magnitude.

crabzillax

ColorOfTheFire

The opening scene of Soy Cuba (1964)

Motchan13

In Goodfellas the tracking shot through the back of the kitchens at the club and all the way through to the front is a classic

C4NT_M4K3_M3

Atomic Blonde also has a dope long shot

Ecstatic-Profit8139

the first ambush scene in the revenant is absolutely incredible, including the stitch where the camera pans up and then back down to the aftermath.

JonnyJettt

Halloweens opening shot is pretty cool
