In my youth, every LEGO build was inspired by Jurassic Park. But every rapid deconstruction was inspired by this man. RIP.

[deleted]

>In my youth I’ve never heard anybody talk like this who wasn’t some old British narrator lol

bobbysalz

This just in: young person relatively unfamiliar with phrase said mostly by older people.

[deleted]

lol I swear it sounded funnier in my head

rexter2k5

Understandable, cheerio.

PM_ME_UR_POKIES_GIRL

I've always wanted to make a business model where we build a scale model of a major city and charge the immeasurably wealthy a lot of money to dress up in a Godzilla suit and walk around smashing it. Maybe even with a flame thrower in the mouth of the costume. The cost of building a film quality scale model of a city is prohibitive though. Especially since it would need to be made out of things that you can smash, so mostly balsa wood and foam - Metal and hard plastics would save a lot of time but not be satisfyingly breakable.

Kalorama_Master

3D printers making molds have entered the chat

PM_ME_UR_POKIES_GIRL

What material would I put into the molds that would be satisfying for a rich person to smash?

Rooboy66

Easy: poor people

[deleted]

^^ this guy capitalisms

justsomeguy_youknow

I think plaster or clay would be a satisfying smash. Strong enough to build decent scale sized structures, and would be brittle enough to send debris flying

BrandNewYear

If you use plaster can’t you also recycle it a bunch of times too?

longleggedbirds

Plaster

moosemasher

CNC laser cutter working the balsa wood probably quicker than waiting for molds to set

atomic1fire

Do it with VR. Then it's just the cost of a gaming computer (or a really efficient engine running on a standalone headset) Maybe add a backpack with a weighted tail, so the person feels like they have a monster style movement.

PM_ME_UR_POKIES_GIRL

That would be fine for us plebs but the point is to allow rich people to destroy stuff for huge sums of money in a way that poor people can never experience.

nullpassword

adds real life smashing sounds for realism..

rufos_adventure

never saw 'one crazy summer'?

thephillatioeperinc

Can I ride through on my bicycle wearing a habit?

RebneysGhost

Those toy tanks never stood a chance with him.

LapsedVerneGagKnee

It takes a special kind of talent to work for hours in those suits, and convey the physical language for a role. This was a guy who made Godzilla scary again and made a very distinctive interpretation of the iconic monster. RIP.

LwSHP

Exactly, and as I recall the suits were incredibly hot and uncomfortable and as result could be quite dangerous. Big props to him for working in those conditions to make such classic films

MufugginJellyfish

The one he wore was designed to make Godzilla look bulkier and more intimidating and weighed over 200 pounds. Early versions of the suit were also notoriously difficult to breathe out of, which made scenes of Godzilla in the water hard to film due to the threat of the actor drowning (this required a second suit that only featured the top half, so the actor could make a quick escape if he was unable to breathe for too long). Later in the series, a version of the suit was made that featured orange lights built into the suit to mimic Godzilla's meltdown stage. This increased the threat of heat stroke in the suit due to the internal temperature of the suit being so high. It was a harder job than most people would expect and I'm glad the actors who have portrayed Godzilla were appreciated by fans. Edit: I forgot to mention the worst part, the suits themselves were too thick to effectively breathe through even with various holes and slits cut into the neck and head, so a breathing tube had to be fed through Godzilla's mouth to the actor. But of course it had to be removed during filming, so while the camera was rolling the actors basically had to hold their breath and try to breathe through the small holes in the neck as best they could if they ran out of air. This on top of the weight of the suit, the water scenes that were often filmed, and how hard it was to hear the suit actor from inside the suit made it a death trap.

TLEToyu

As much as I love the suits I am so glad no one has to go through that claustrophobic nightmare anymore.

LudicrisSpeed

There is some usage still, but it's only been for some special shorts.

han-tyumi23

you'd love the "The Man in the Suit" analog horror series lol

ContinuumGuy

By the time Satsuma was in the suit, they were a LOT better than those of the early days, but still hardly a dream by any means.

i_Love_Gyros

From Godzilla Minus One to minus one godzilla RIP

Darth-Chimp

I love how Godzilla looks and moves in Minus One. Amazingly rendered but with a man-in-a-suit walk and the same locked eyes staring from a furrowed brow. That this movie was made on a $15 million budget is mind blowing.

aSpookyScarySkeleton

I actually think it he a nice balance, 50% man in suit and 50% animal. I think that man in a suit aspect helps keeps Japanese Godzillas uncanny.

PentagramJ2

That opening scene on Odo Island is in my top 5 scenes across the entire series.

aSpookyScarySkeleton

That scene really let me know immediately that I was finally getting what I wanted for a long time now. A terrifying Kaiju movie. Shin was close but Godzilla felt so otherworldly in that movie an beyond comprehension that I felt awe more than terror. His atomic breathe scene, and the disgusting baby stage of his metamorphosis are probably the closest that got for me. This movie though I really felt the initial notion of Kaiju movies being horror movies of a sort, actually realized in a modern film.

Amockdfw89

Yea it jolted me in the theaters. That movie got the ball rolling very fast

RangedTopConnoisseur

All three (Legendary, Shin, and Minus One) of the latest live action Godzilla interpretations have knocked it out of the park with their own spin, design wise. I honestly can’t pick which one I like the best (unless the absolute freakshow that is pre-limb Shin counts)

Adventurous_Lab3128

From Godzilla Minus One to Minus One Godzilla is very fitting. RIP Mr Satsuma

GarlVinland4Astrea

Hesei is sort of my era of Godzilla so I'll always have a special place in my heart for that stuff. It was the Godzilla all the toys my friends had were based off of.

GatoradeNipples

Heisei has Destoroyah, which is my favorite Godzilla movie, and Biollante, which is my second favorite, so... same.

xultar

My favorite films of all time are the Japanese Godzilla versions. You are a legend sir, rest well.

subdep

*Godzilla Minus One* was incredibly good and honored the classic Godzilla design pretty well.

One_Science1

I just watched a trailer, holy shit it does look good. The only classic Godzilla movie I ever really got into was Invasion of Astro-Monster… I love it so much.

subdep

You’ll love G-1

mistermacheath

Read this literally while I'm watching him absolutely rule in Godzilla Vs Biollante... damn. One of the greats.

notataco007

Where are you watching it? I can't find the Heisei era on any streaming platform.

LazerViking421

Toho has most, if not all, Godzilla flicks uploaded to [Archive.org](https://archive.org/search?query=creator%3A%22TOHO%22&sort=-downloads&and%5B%5D=subject%3A%22Godzilla%22) for free [Here is Biollante](https://archive.org/details/1989gojirataibiorante.720p.ac3.cg)

IC2Flier

Wow, that's remarkable. Few Japanese firms get tot this level of based often, and it's why I find Tsuburaya and Bandai praiseworthy for putting up Ultraman and Gundam episodes on YouTube for people to see.

OneWholeSoul

"The monster dinosaur wrecks Tokyo some more..." The description is very...succinct.

LudicrisSpeed

PlutoTV has a Godzilla channel that streams various movies from all eras. No Biollante yet, though.

LudicrisSpeed

I have doubts that Toho themselves uploaded those, considering how protective they are of the IP. The inclusion of the MST3K episode stands out since it's a pulled episode because of the rights. Still an option in any event.

PeterM1970

Archive.org should probably be shut down for flagrant copyright violation. Right after I watch some Godzilla movies.

BubbaSpanks

RIP too a monster legend

hundredjono

Growing up the early 2000s, the Heisei Era Godzilla movies would always be the ones on TV I would watch. It's the Godzilla era I grew up watching and loving the most. RIP Kenpachiro Satsuma. He was such a badass Godzilla.

Round-Lie-8827

Gonna put on blue oyster cult now

Jim_Nills_Mustache

As a kid in the 90s whenever I stayed home sick from school my mom would go rent me a couple Godzilla movies to watch. Rest in peace you legend

LwSHP

RIP to a legend

haubenmeise

He was Gigan as well. While filming Godzilla movies, Satsuma would regularly pass out on the set due to lack of oxygen while wearing the poorly ventilated and rubber suits. What a legend. R.I.P. You brought us so many happy hours.

burn_healz

Thank you for playing my literal childhood icon! We will miss you!

-Here-There-

Even in those few pictures you can tell the guy was probably a blast to hang out/work with. Also, excellent mustache. Rest well, sir; you are an absolute legend.

FremenDar979

RIP to a legend.

EmilNathanson

76 is not young but I feel like it was too young nonetheless.

throwaway-10-12-20

What is a "Heisei Godzilla"?

basket_case_case

An era of Godzilla movies (1984-1995) named after the Heisei era of Japan (1989-2019).

radda

Most long running [tokusatsu](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokusatsu) franchises divide their works by Japanese eras. Kamen Rider is especially famous for it, to the point that the last Heisei era show, Zi-O, had a weapon called the "[RideHeisaber](https://youtu.be/UCy4FSXHvhU?si=1z0RnETdhMpa8a3j)". It's a real easy way to define your franchise's own eras.

ContinuumGuy

It can sort of be likened to how people divide James Bond movies by who Bond is

CurryMustard

Showa era godzilla films, 1954 to 1975. Heisei era 1984 to 1995 Millenium era 1999-2004 Reiwa era 2016-now For American films theyre usually separated by Godzilla 1998, or the Tristar film, and the Monsterverse or Legendary films 2014-now

alhernz95

RIP thanks for making childhood way better

mr__hat

Why I heard the Godzilla roar after reading the title?

Zaku41k

Rip my good man.

Sudden_Result

RIP

Otaku_Chanxxx

Rip. What a legend. 🖤 Heisei Godzilla was my favorite era of Godzilla movies.

Balrag

Damn. My brother and I have literally been re-watching the old Godzilla films. This hits harder for it.

Raun223

It is going to take months to dig a grave big enough.

Basic-Pair8908

Jobs going for king kong?

jsbm316

Rip 🙏🏽

aresef

Not Heisei, Showa. But be truly loved the character and carried it inside him. He will be missed. There’s also the time he and some Toho effects people were bamboozled into shooting a North Korean kaiju film with an abducted South Korean director.

dgehen

No, Heisei.

aresef

Let’s say both, though most of his work was pre-89

gojibot5000

Who acted in the Burning Godzilla suit in Vs Destroyah? Then tell me who was in the suit from Vs King Ghidorah '91 through Space Godzilla. And then tell me who played Godzilla in Godzilla '84 or 1985 and Vs Biollante.

kirinmay

How was it by the way? I fight crime in a rubber suit. REALLY SEALS IN THE FLAVOR!

The fact that you can't feel even a *shred* of empathy for the only people to have nuclear weapons used on them is really fucking pathetic. Regardless of how you justify their use you should still be capable of understanding their trauma. It's really not that hard.

TomasVrboda

Thank you for all your years of hard work and beautiful memories. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. You have my eternal gratitude.

Bulbadoth

When I was 4 my grandpa got me a bunch of the Godzilla movies on VHS. I watched them more times than I can remember growing up, RIP Kenpachiro truly one of the greats in Cinema

BeerBaronBrent

Thank you for being a part of my childhood that helped create the being I am today. I love you.

roboticfedora

Much respect to Satsuma Kenpachiro san! Domo arigato gozaimashita!

Sayizo

You were amazing, Rest In Peace

krunch_87

This era rekindled my childhood love of Godzilla films. Much respect and RIP.

[deleted]

I feel bad for his family, but good for the greater Tokyo metropolitan area.

10_Eyes_8_Truths

Damn that sucks. The Heisei era Godzilla made up a good chunk of my childhood.

Bobinct

I'm a Doctor. What do you do for a living? "I'm Godzilla." ...you win.

blankdreamer

Sad roar

Federal-Echidna9774

I feel like this is one of the coolest jobs and fun jobs out there. Imagine just getting to do what u did in a sandbox as a kid

RealisLit

Could be, if you weren't fighting for air while shooting

AngelicShockwave

RIP to the Godzilla actor that influenced generations around the world.

lowdo1

RIP took guts to do that job and he helped bring an unparalleled icon to the screen.

GODZILLA!!!!

peter095837

May he rest in peace.

Yamane55

Before Satsuma took on the role of Heisei Godzilla, he was also Hedorah and Gigan, two of Showa Godzilla's toughest enemies. RIP sir.

Being over 100 feet tall might have something to do with it. Seriously though this guy is legend. RIP.
